About the author

Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay (Bangla: তারাশঙ্কর বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়) was born at his ancestral home at Labhpur village in Birbhum district, Bengal Province, British India (now West Bengal, India). He wrote 65 novels, 53 story-books, 12 plays, 4 essay-books, 4 autobiographies and 2 travel stories. For his novel Arogyaniketan, he received the Rabindra Puraskar in 1955 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956. In 1966, he received the Jnanpith Award for his novel গণদেবতা. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1962 and the Padma Bhushan in 1969.

Tarasankar is one of those writers of the third decades of the twentieth centuries who broke the poetic tradition in novels but took to writing prose with the world around them adding romance to human relationship breaking the indifference of the so called conservative people of the society who dare to call a spade a spade. Tarasankar’s novels, so to say, do not look back to the realism in rejection, but accepted it in a new way allowing the reader to breathe the truth of human relationship restricted so far by the conservative and hypocrisy of the then society.

He learned to see the world from various angles. He seldom rose above the matter soil and his Birbhum exists only in time and place. He had never been a worshipper of eternity. Tarasankar’s chief contribution to Bengal literature is that he dared writing unbiased. He wrote what he believed. He wrote what he observed.

His novels are rich in material and potentials. He preferred sensation to thought. He was ceaselessly productive and his novels are long, seemed unending and characters belonged to the various classes of people from zaminder down to pauper. Tarasankar experimented in his novels with the relationships, even so called illegal, of either sexes. He proved that sexual relation between man and women sometimes dominate to such an extent that it can take an upperhand over the prevailing laws and instructions of society. His novel ‘Radha’ can be set for an example in this context.

His historical novel ‘Ganna Begum’ is an attempt worth mentioning for its traditional values. Tarasankar ventured into all walks of Bengali life and it’s experience with the happenings of socio-political milieu. Tarasankar will be remembered for his potential to work with the vast panorama of life where life is observed with care and the judgment is offered to the reader. and long ones, then any other author. He is a region novelist, his country being the same Birbhum. He mainly flourished during the war years, having produced in that period a large number of novels and short stories.

প্রথমে কিছু কথা বলে নেই।দিহান ভাইকে বলছিলাম, মোটামুটি ছোট সাইজের মধ্যে একটা বই রেকমেন্ড করে দিতে।তিনি বললেন এই বইটার কথা।তা আমার কাছে তো হার্ডকপি নেই তাই পিডিএফ ডাউনলোড করে নিলাম।পিডিএফ কোয়ালিটি দেখে মেজাজটাই জাস্ট খারাপ হয়ে গেছিলো।তার উপর চোখের সমস্যা। পিডিএফ পড়লে চোখ ব্যাথা করে।পড়ার মুডটাই নষ্ট হয়ে গেলো।পরবর্তীতে অনেক কষ্টে পড়ার মুডে আসতে হইছে। শতগুণ বিরক্তি আর তিক্ত একটা মন নিয়ে পড়া শুরু করলাম।বইটা না পড়েই ঠিক করে ফেললাম ২ তারা দেবো।কিন্তু বইটা নিজ গুণে পাঁচ তারকা তার নিজের দখলে নিয়ে নিয়েছে।

কিন্তু কয়েক পেজ পড়ার পর মোটামুটি বিরক্তি কিছুটা কমে গেছে।বইটার গ্রামীণ পরিবেশ মনটাকে ঠান্ডা করা শুরু করে দিয়েছে।মনে হলো ঘটনার মধ্যে প্রবেশ করে ফেলছি।আর এদিকে চোখও তার সমস্যা জানান দিতে শুরু করেছে।কিন্তু মন বলছে অন্য কথা।এ ব্যাটাও আবার চোখের কাছে হার মানবে না।ব্যাস ভূলে গেলাম চোখের কথা।টানা আড়াই ঘন্টাই পড়ে শেষ করে ফেললাম।কিন্তু এখন চোখ বলছে, 'শুনলি না তো আমার কথা, এখন বোঝ ঠ্যালা'।তা চোখ যাই বলুক ওদিকে আর কান দিচ্ছি না।এখন এটা ভেবেই ভালো লাগছে একটা তৃপ্ত মন নিয়ে ঘুমাতে যাবো।

আগামীকাল সকালে রিভিউ লেখতে চাইছিলাম।কিন্তু পরবর্তীতে এই ফিলিংসটা নাও থাকতে পারে ভেবে এখনই রিভিউ লিখে ফেললাম।কিন্তু এখন মনে হচ্ছে যা উল্টাপাল্টা লেখছি তা এখন না লেখলেই পারতাম।আর আবেগের মাত্রা বেশি হয়ে গেছে তাও বুঝতাছি, কিন্তু কিছুই করার নাই। এটি রিভিউয়ের ক্যাটগড়িতে পড়ে কিনা আল্লাহ ভালো জানে।আর আমার কাছে ভালো লাগছে, জানি না কার কাছে কেমন লাগবে। তবে দেখলাম এভারেজ রেটিং অনেক কম। আর যাই হোক আমার এই প্রতিক্রিয়া দেখে বইটা পড়ে ভালো না লাগলে এর দায় আমার না।বলে রাখলাম।

আমার অনেক পছন্দের উপন্যাস গুলোর মধ্যে তারাশঙ্কর বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় এর ''না'' উপন্যাস টি আছে। এতে দুই ভাই থাকে। দুই ভাইয়ের একজন একটু বেশি শিক্ষিত আরেকজন সেরকম শিক্ষিত নয়। তো স্বাভাবিক ভাবেই বিয়ের সময় পাত্রী নির্বাচনের জন্য এদের পাত্রী দেখতে পাঠানো হয়। এরা দুইজন করে কি , একে অপরের পাত্রী দেখতে যায়। অর্থাৎ ক দেখতে যায় খ এর পাত্রী আর খ দেখতে যায় ক এর পাত্রী। ক আবার খ এর পাত্রী দেখে খুব পছন্দ করে ফেলে সুতরাং ক ঠিক করে যেভাবেই হোক খ এর বিয়ে এখানে হতে দেওয়া যাবে না। সে নিজেই খ এর জন্য যে পাত্রী দেখা হয়েছে সেই পাত্রী কে বিবাহ করবে... টুইস্ট এর কেবল শুরু হইলো ...ভেতরে গেলে আরো পাবেন। চারটি তারা তো চোখ বন্ধ করেই দেওয়া যায়

নিয়তির লীলা মানবজীবনকে কীভাবে বারে বারে পর্যুদস্ত করে, 'না' গল্প সে প্রমাণ দেয়। নিয়তির কাছে মানুষ প্রতিনিয়ত হার মানে। নিয়তির কাছে পরাজিত হয় মানুষের সবরকম শিক্ষিত মানসিকতার প্রচেষ্টা, আর সেখান থেকেই ট্র্যাজেডি-রস দানা বাঁধে। এই গল্পে, সেই ট্র্যাজেডির অপ্রতিরোধ্য যন্ত্রণা ব্রজরাণী যতখানি ভোগ করেছে, তার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি সেই যন্ত্রণা ভোগ করেছে অনন্ত। প্রসঙ্গত, তারাশঙ্কর 'অগ্রদানী' গল্পেও এই নিয়তির লীলার কথা বলেছেন। তবে 'অগ্রদানী'তে নিয়তি নিষ্ঠুর শাস্তির রূপে ধরা দিয়েছে, অপরদিকে 'না' গল্পে সেই নিয়তির আবির্ভাব ঘটেছে ক্ষমার বেশে। দ্বিতীয়ত, তারাশঙ্করের অন্য অনেক গল্পের মতো 'না' গল্পেও এসেছে এক জমিদার পরিবারের কাহিনি, তৃতীয়ত, প্রথাসিদ্ধ ছোটোগল্পের সঙ্গে 'না' গল্পের অনেক ক্ষেত্রে অমিল দেখা যায়। এই গল্পের আয়তন বেশ বড় এবং এই গল্পে, উপন্যাসেরও বেশ কিছু লক্ষণ দেখা যায়। না পড়ে থাকলে পড়ে ফেলুন গল্পটি।

একটু বেশি প্রকটভাবে নাটকীয় কিন্ত এছাড়া খুব শক্তিশালী tragic উপন্যাস।

বেশ ভাল লেগেছে গল্পটি। একটানা পড়ে শেষ করলাম... পৃষ্ঠাসংখ্যা খুব ই অল্প। কাহিনী যত শেষের দিকে এগোয় তত ই গল্পের শেষ টা কেমন হবে তা আন্দাজ করা যায় এর নামকরণ থেকে।
এত স্বল্প পরিসরে যে এত সুন্দর ভাবে গল্প বোনা যায়, তা 'না' লিখে লেখক প্রমাণ করেছেন। তিনি প্রমাণ করেছেন একটা 'না' কত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শব্দ হতে পারে, কীভাবে একটা 'না' প্রভাবিত করতে পারে মানুষের জীবন কে।

এক প্রশ্বাসেই পড়ে ফেললাম। বুঝতেই পারিনি কখন শেষ হয়ে গেল। এরকম ব‌ই আরওপড়তে চাই।
