For years, exiles from North Korea, China, and Russia have terrorized the Western Seaboard of post-Outbreak America. And for years, the remnants of U.S. military forces have struggled to defeat them.
No more.
After U.S. forces cripple the enemy's ability to wage war, the North Koreans and their allies have engaged in a last ditch effort to save themselves by building internment camps where thousands of American citizens are being held hostage. They think they are invulnerable. They think they have the ultimate leverage.
They are wrong.
Caleb Hicks, Gabriel Garrett, Tyrel Jennings, and Raymond Grabovsky will join forces with patriotic troops who have spent years fighting the North Koreans to bring their reign of terror to an end. To accomplish this, they will have to utilize a secret weapon even the U.S. government has been afraid to use. Until now...
Don't miss this next exciting chapter in the Surviving the Dead series!
Surviving the Dead Series:
No Easy Hope This Shattered Land Warrior Within The Passenger Fire in Winter The Darkest Place Savages The Killing Line Storm of Ghosts
James N. Cook is a martial arts enthusiast, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a former cubicle dweller, and the author of the Surviving the Dead series. He hikes, he goes camping, he travels a lot, and he has trouble staying in one spot for very long. He lives in North Carolina.
I always have trouble putting any of the installments in this series down, and then promptly go through withdrawal. All good things, of course! The face-paced action and the story leave one hooked and ready for more. It took a while to have the story told from different protagonists, but I would not say a bad thing, just different. I really look forward to the next book.
I was sort of disappointed as the story began since it started slow but as it progressed, it became obvious the set up to this will envolve Hicks, or mostly about him. We learn more in bits and pieces from those that know him best and from his own thoughts. He meets new friends and old and it soon becomes obvious he is a pawn and he has little choice in this new and deadly game but to do as he is told if he ever wants to be free from a past that won't let him go. Once again Gen Jacobs has another mission for him, holdiing a carrot in front of him while at the same time using him regardless of the consequences, he has an obective and he is making sure it will be completed. Hicks has choices; follow the carrot that Jacob dangles in front of him for another eighteen months, or leave and become a wanted man. But Hicks knows himself and what he is, what he fights for, what he wants and what he must do. He does not have to like it but will if it helps to put his ghost to rest and to begin his life with Miranda. This time he is sent after the ROC (possible spoilers)who are encroaching further and further into the country side enslaving people. The powers that be are determined to do something about it so they begin to gather the best of the best, including Hicks. There is resentment to both his age and rank but Hicks doesn't care. He is there to do a job, one that he must complete as partial payment to Jacobs. And with the possiblity that they might also find a cure to the Phage, how can he say no? There is some fighting with the Undead, a few tense moments here and there, but this is mostly about the mission and about Hicks who is desperate to find peace in his heart and his soul. To forget the tragedy that left him broken and worse, placed him under Jacob's thumb. There are also one very intriguing incident that will hopefully be explained as more and more Grays begin to appear and I am really looking forward to in the next installment. And then there is Hienrich and about a hundred of his men whom have escaped and are on the move once again. And he has plans, plans to return to his old ways and in the last place anyone expects him. For now, he is keeping a low profile, or a good facimile of it until he is ready to strike. And when he does it's going to be big. This is one of the best storylines in STD series and I am glad I stuck with it. It was really very, very good.
The tone of this latest book in the series is different - more mournful and introspective overall - but I enjoyed reading it.
The Surviving the Dead series caught my eye one night years ago when the first book series first came out, and I have faithfully kept up with it ever since. As far as Apocalyptic series go, it's among the better. This installment is among the better of the series' installments. Hick's perspective is mournful and introspective in this book and the whole book is littered with well-written passages. Some caught me off-guard with excellent descriptions that struck me as downright literary. Because this series has real writing in it but there's also an Apocalypse and then, even better, full characters and a post-Apocalyptic world, it keeps me coming back.
I will admit, this installment didn't grab me at first for two reasons:
1. The book's human villain, Heinrich, needs some work. Come on - this guy who's pure evil? Didn't you talk about some of his reasons why he's that way in earlier books? We need to know why or it's like looking at a 2 hour horror flick and the bad guy is dressed in a Halloween costume marked, "This year's most frightening horror movie character." But we all know it's make-believe.. 2. Caleb is too high professionally among those extremely seasoned vets. It didn't feel believable.
But that's just me. All-in-all, fantastic installment in a good series.
because Hicks has his position over much more seasoned veterans, but it's complicated. I was also annoyed bec
I have read every book by James Cook in the Surviving the Dead series. I've loved all his books, but I have to admit, Storm of Ghosts, is the most disappointing. Cook's books are usually narrated from the point of view the characters he has developed in the series, and in Storm of Ghosts, Caleb is the "narrator'". Introduced to us in an earlier book, Caleb was pressed into military service in order to avoid serving jailtime. A deadly and efficient soldier, in Storm of Ghosts, Caleb is sent on a super-secret mission whose success could have a critical impact on a nation still struggling to recover from the zombie apocalypse.
The biggest disappointment for me was the lack of action so typical of the other books in the Surviving the Dead series. Usually, the action is fast-paced, but here it plods along with the speed of a snail. Much of the novel is spent "telling" not "showing" the biggest mistake a writer can make. To be fair, when there are already seven other books in the series, at some point enough "ghouls" and undead would have been killed the author almost had to develop alternate story lines. It takes some time and verbage to develop these, but I still think Cook spent too much time on this. It made this book...ordinary. Three stars for Storm of Ghosts.
Caleb Hicks continues on his journey with the army. Along with Gabriel Garrett he also settles in Colorado Springs but at the invitation of the Major General Philips Jacobs whom we have met in previous books. I love how, if the books are read in order, all the stories continue on the story in rebuilding America from the invasion of the walking dead. This book did not disappoint with the action packed storyline and the emotions of the characters comes shining through the pages. Looking forward to reading the next book.
..... great book in this series. I must admit there are a few parts that start to get boring and there's not near as much action as in the previous 7 books, but it was very good regardless. The storyline continues to keep the reader interested and the characters continue to keep us enthralled. Glad that this isn't the last of the series! But going to have to wait for book nine!!!!
This is one of my absolute fav zombie apocalypse series. Caleb Hicks is my #1 favorite character, and I'm SO glad we got another novel from his POV. His story is one that is well developed and quite unique. I did miss Eric, as his presence was fleeting in this installment. Overall, this was one of my fav in the series and I eagerly anticipate the next one.
I like the beginning of the series but towards the end it was more about how great and perfect the heroes of the stories were. I stopped feeling for survivors and getting to know them like in the beginning, it just worked out also perfectly I don't think I'm going to read any more of the series but I love James Cook so I will be looking for more books.
This entire series has been great to read. The protagonists are interesting and likeable enough considering their difficult lives. Each new chapter has been even better than the last. Looking forward to the next one, although I would prefer if this storyline were wrapped up within the next 2 books. Just my preference.
Reading this series has been very enjoyable. Sometimes a series loses steam as more books are written. This one does not. Nothing forced. Continuous quality story line. Look forward to number 9
This series just keeps getting better and better. The characters are so well written they come alive and you will get emotionally attached. I love a book that can make me afraid for the characters and fear the zombies.
Fantastic book. I think this was so good because it follows the story of the previous books, but expands the set of characters... and it certainly sets up for stories in at least three different areas.
The latest book in the series is also one of best in my opinion. The story quickly moves along with action, drama and human interaction and drama. If you are a fan of the Surviving the Dead series you will love Storm of Ghosts.
Awesome series. Would love to see a book wrote about these 2 characters: Park Heon-Woo and Kim Ji-Su. To see how the apocalypse began from their standpoint. I'm assuming these are the scientist that started the plague to begin with.
This is filed under the wrong author.. When I picked it up wasnt aware this was part of a series but this book can still be read independently. decent book, good storyline
Loved it all. I almost wish it ended here, with a happily ever after... but that's not what happens to good people who can change the course of history with their skills...
I really like the character development and direction the series has taken. A good read and great series. Would recommend if you like zombie apocalypse genre.
I'm sorry for only giving 3 stars, but so far this one was the weakest of the series. Maybe I'm being picky here but I had a few reasons for it. First: I simply miss Eric :/ I like Caleb a lot, but he's not Eric. second: I kinda got lost along the way. in the beginning I was hooked and flew through the pages, then it cooled down and a loooong stretch of nothing really going on happened. I've never been bored by one of the books before! Only after 70% (says my Kindle App) the party got started - and Boy, how much shit hit the fan! the final chapters had me biting my nails. Also I enjoyed the bits of lovey-dovey Caleb. James Cook really has a feeling for showing working relationships that feel "just right". and the Ending? Damn, I wished for 400 pages more. now I have to wait another year to find out what happens next D: all in all: Not his best book, but still enjoyable and another step into the world of my favorite Zombie-Killers :D
