Since the Garden of Eden sin has ravaged people's lives, leaving behind a plethora of troubling problems such as anxieties, fears, insecurities, confusion, unbelief, bitterness, sexual hang–ups, and even addictions. Most people look for answers in all the wrong places. They ought to look within. They ought to look at i. i is the "self–life." i is the core of the fallen human nature. i is the realm where sin grows and flourishes. the root of sin exposed unravels the mystery of the corrupted human nature, and convincingly proves that all of man's struggles with sin can be traced to the pride–driven "self–life" that emerges from it. Rather than relying on trendy quick–fixes, this book digs deeply into the treasures of Scripture to provide struggling believers everything they need to deal with their problems at the root the inescapable, ever–present i.

Basically an expansion of his other book, Irresistible to God. Like its predecessor, it's not a feel good read, but a convicting one. Here's my review of that one:
Probably up there with one of the books every true Christian needs to read.
"But to this one I will look, to him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word." (Is 66:2)
Pride is the one sin that God says he directly opposes - more than greed or any vices. Humility is something all the great men of God in the past possessed. This books goes into depth about how insidious pride is. Yet in our society we wear pride as a coat of honor.
I've got a lot of flaws and bad habits. But even as a child, I can remember having an air of arrogance. Even as a young adult I was called a snob because I'm introverted and don't talk a lot, combined with being "confident" in what I know and believe. This books helps expose all of that.
It's not a feel good book. It's not a book to gloss over either. If you want to be someone who's irresistible to God and reap the benefits of it, read this book. And if you take it seriously, it will cost you yourself - which is a small price to pay for being one who God looks upon.
Terrific, accurate, insightful, hard-hitting book on the subject of pride. I needed to read it--and my counselees need to read it. I expect that this is one of those books that I will reread repeatedly over the years. Of all the books on on pride and humility that I have read, this is one of the very best. There are some minor theological details on which I might differ somewhat with the author, but the points of agreement are far, far more important and significant. Highly recommended.
A practical, straight forward addressing of our main problem in this world: Ourselves. When we look at the landscape of life, we see brokenness, death, anxiety, trouble, conflict, etc. What people often do in an attempt to find the main source of the problem is that they look outward. Always eager to find something or someone to pin the blame on, we humans rarely take a look into the proverbial mirror and acknowledge that our greatest enemy is oneself. Gallagher does an effective job of helping the reader diagnose the core issues. He doesn't just stop with making a diagnosis of the true problem but he also provides the reader with insight into how he/she can change the central problem. He doesn't provide quick-fix answers to the problems that ail us. He points the reader to the richness of the Word of God and seeks to help the reader understand that our Creator truly does know our central problem and our Creator provides clear-cut answers to truly change. I think the reader will find this very insightful and very helpful in his/her life, assuming that he/she is teachable.
Convicting, good examples/stories, honest, and helpful. I especially liked the second section fleshing out pride and the third section which further explored humility and loving/putting others first. Conclusion: We must come to the end of living for self and submit to God as King of our lives.
My only hesitation in recommending this book is that I personally disagree with some of Gallagher’s theology of man’s will/ God’s sovereignty and the way God communicates with us. However, I think the benefit of the content outweighs these differences if someone is able to read with discernment.
Don't read this book if you're not serious about your walk with Jesus. Do read this book if you desire to die to self and seek the Lord with all your heart. This is not easy and requires a sober mind, humble spirit, and child-like faith. It is not a "feel good" book with its confrontative perspective. It will help to change lives as it points you to a real heart relationship with a living God. This book will never be on the best seller list of Christian self-help books because it exposes our self centered idolatry in the Christian world.
