Hi, I'm Ransom, and I like to tell stories. Sometimes I tell them with words, sometimes with pictures, often with both. I grew up on a farm on the Eastern shore of Maryland and also in a little house by the beach in Englewood, Florida where I got very tan and swam every day until I became half fish. I started writing stories when I was young, on an old typewriter that jammed and longhand on legal pads. When I was a little older I got a camera for Christmas and became obsessed with photography, and when I was a little older still my friends and I came into possession of a half-broken video camera and began to make our own movies, starring ourselves, using our bedrooms and backyards for sets. I have loved writing stories and taking photographs and making movies ever since, and have endeavored to do all three.
Yay 5 stars! I haven't read the original book for a year or so and so this was a fantastic refresher.
Hollow City is the sequel to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. In this book, Jacob continues on his journey. I can't say much about the sequel because of spoilers, but in this book Jacob and the gang get to meet more peculiars. They get to learn the truth and history of the Peculiar Tales and whether or not a peculiar soul can be extracted. We also learn a little of the back story to the Peculiar children. The kids also get to explore other loops and time periods.
This book gets a little bit more political and there is a war going on between the Hollows and the Peculiars.
I own Library of Souls the third and final book in this trilogy, but haven't read it just yet. Reading the graphic novel was a great way to get back into the story. It gets me excited to see what happens next in the children's dangerous adventure.
What a WONDERFUL second volume! I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hollow City which has just the right amount of creepiness and evilness without it being too terrifying to read *hides under blanket*
Hollow City focuses on the peculiar children trying to turn Miss Peregrine back into her human self-again. They travel to London in the hope of finding another ymbryne (Miss Wren) who might know a way to transform their beloved headmistress back to her normal self.
Along the way, the children encounter the sinister wights (there is one scenario involving a showdown between the children and wights which is brilliant), the grotesque-looking hollowghast and a few peculiars from a carnival.
The illustrations continue to amaze me (they're a bit manga-ish) and some of the characters are beautiful to look at. I mean Hugh - wow! And I love Horace...but Enoch is just something else.
Anywaay, the story is full of action, high-speed chases and a nice twist involving a certain animal will leave you stunned (if you haven't already read the novel versions of this story).
Enoch provides quite a few of the laughs (he's such a grumpy cynic but he's great) and this second volume provides much more exposition which helps the readers get to know the peculiar children better.
Ooooh, and there's a talking, smoking, sunglasses-wearing dog called Addison who's pretty darn cool.
So, if you like novel storytelling with a unique spin, brilliant characters, fantastic illustrations and a story with real heart then Hollow City is definitely for you!
I accidentally bought the second book first oops. Nevertheless, it’s been awhile since I’ve enjoyed the world of Peculiar’s so this was a wonderful, easy refresher.
I also absolutely adore Cassandra Jean’s art style, it’s so beautiful!
Wow, this was so much better than the normal book. Maybe because it condensed all the boring parts and just went with the exciting parts but still keeping the story intact! It was definitely a blessing to read this book, I hope that the illustrator will also make a book 3 graphic novel, as I couldn't even finish that book, and I am hoping that thanks to a graphic novel I may just finish it. The art was really fabulous, even though it took me a long time to figure out that the badly drawn figure that kept popping up wasn't the illustrator being lazy, but just our invisible boy. :P
This has got to be one of the coolest graphic novels I have ever read! The art style matched perfectly with the Peculiar's story. It was deliberately sketched roughly, with imperfect lines and colourings in. You just need to see one page to understand: I would have been disappointed if it were in full colour like a normal comic, because it just wouldn't suit the story. And all the characters were depicted just as I imagined them, especially Emma. The story was adapted wonderfully, and every aspect of it was captured with expertise. I almost want to start over and reread it again, or perhaps finally bite the bullet and read The Conference of the Birds.
I really love Cassandra Jean’s artwork. The story adaptation itself was confusing in places to someone who hasn’t read the second novel yet, but it’s not too bad that I couldn’t follow along. There are even more characters introduced to the already many from book one which are difficult to keep track of (which would be the same for novel or comic). What a cliff hanger! I’ve got to get my hands on the third graphic novel ASAP. (Haha, and read the 2nd and 3rd books...) But really the draw for me with these graphic novels is the artwork because I know there is a lot of filling in needed for the story of the comic adaptation that the original novels can provide (though I assume they hit on the major points).
WAIT: there isn’t a graphic novel adaptation of the 3rd book yet!
I absolutely love this book series! I read all the novels first then I read the graphic novels. While this book got the main ideas of the non regular novel it did miss a lot of small stuff that I considered important. One example is that this version of Hollow City did not go into the depths of Hugh and Fiona's relationship which I was extremely disappointed in. I did however love how Jean got the part when Hugh rescued all the peculiars from the wights, the art was not only breathtaking but it followed the story completely.
I loved it! it was a super quick to read and loved all the illustrations. I actully bought it for my husband who didn't want to read the whole book. I figured this was a good alternative because it took all the key parts of the book and simplified them. I read the book but still very much enjoyed this. waiting for my husbands opinion once he stops making excuses about why he doesn't want to read it lol.
Just like my review for the first book, I would definitely recommend that a person read the actual book before the graphic novel because (obviously) quite a bit is left out. Also, just like the first graphic novel, the style in this one is very simple. Still a very fun read!
I cannot wait to get my hands on the third graphic novel when it is published!
I'm loving all of the books I have read in September. They all been four stars or five stars, and that I haven't dnf any books this month. Even though I read 7 books I really enjoyed those 7 books. I feel like I read more than that but that's okay!(:
As a graphic novel, this was much better than the first book and had more depth to it. The illustrations were not too confusing and I liked how they presented Jacobs's power. I'm looking forward to going on to read the rest of the series!
In this book Jacob continues on his journey with the other peculiar children. Before reading the graphic novel I read the original book and I loved it so so much and I gave it 5 stars.
I mainly read this book as a refreshener and it was amazing even if it was obviously shorter and some important things were missing! because I'm lazy and I don't want to reread the entire series :)
When I started reading it I had some problems because I didn't remember any of the characters but Jacob and Emma, but I also struggled to recognize her because the artist drew the fire blue, blue! And I thought for like 70 pages it was air!
The art is amazing, but I've to say I'm not a fan of Cassandra Jean’s art, I think she is a great artist, but I am not a fan of her style and I keep asking myself why does jacob and other people have lines on their cheeks!?
I hope the third book will be illustrated soon! Since I think we won't have other movies from Tim Burton *sighs and cries*

Despite its violence, which I generally eschew, I found this book to be a hopeful quest in the triumph of Good over Evil. Events haven't been going well for this group of peculiar adventurers, yet they manage to survive and continue on their noble quest. When they believe they've reached the end, their expectations are turned upside down and they find that yet another quest awaits them.
I "read" this book as an audio book because I struggle with the graphic novel format. It was narrated by Kirby Heyborne. Mr. Heyborne is a tremendously gifted storyteller whose work I have found so compelling that I will be reviewing his repertoire for other titles of interest. His performance was so gripping that on a day I was feeling unwell, I listened to 6 hours of it. I can't wait to start listening to the next one in the series!
HIGHLY recommend to readers who enjoy a bit of magic mixed into their fantasy fiction.
The second book in the Miss Peregrine graphic novels was only released in July this year due to the reappearing popularity of the book series and the movie but the illustrations was done by the same artist of the 2013 graphic novel. I enjoyed the second novel but nowhere near as much as the first novel and I feel the same way about this graphic novel but worse because the illustrations lack to effect the first did.
I know there was still a lot of work put behind this book but when I look at the drawings in comparison to the first graphic novel it just seems so lacking and dull. There is less details to the faces and background so it feels rushed. The story line doesn't suffer at all because there was very little left out since Hollow City was more of a drawn out filler to the series.
I'll definitely be reading the third graphic novel if they do bring one out but all I wish for is that it has more colour to it because I know the lack of detail is part of the unique style.
Recently started reading Arcadia and I couldn't get into it at all. I thought maybe comics just aren't for me, too complex for me to grasp (cause I didn't understand anything that was going on).
Luckily this changed things for me! I understood everything, it was fast paced with multiple twist. I read the first book as an audiobook and wasn't a fan. But now I definitely will pick up the next graphic novel in the series.
I read this graphic novel as a quick way to refresh myself of the plot of Hollow City before moving on to Library of Souls. This read is much faster than the novel, and thus I never found it to drag. The end is spectacular like always and I feel much more ready to finish this series at last.
hollow city is my favorite installment of the mphfpc series, and this graphic novel edition did not disappoint!! i loved the illustrations and color palette, and it told the story very well, which can sometimes be a discrepancy between book-to-graphic novel formats. love this series, def an underrated classic.
I love the ilustrations, they really match perfectly with the type of story. Also, I enjoy a lot the book, I get super involved with all the characters and the chalenges they have to face to help miss Peregrin. It was a good light reading. I'll continue reading the series because the end left me wanting more.
The illustrations in this graphic novel are just as amazing as in the first one. However, I just didn't love the story in Hollow City the graphic novel that much.
If you loved Hollow City (the book) then you will love this graphic novel.
I really enjoyed this one! It was much easier to follow plot wise then the first one. We finally get to see Jacob developing his peculiar powers. I’ll probably have to reread the 3rd one before moving on to the 4th
Read to confirm that I'm interested in this series, which I am. No rating until I can compare to the book, though, because I have a number of incipient thoughts I'm not entirely certain about.
