"Complex Shadows" written by author Richard Valanga is the third in his paranormal 'Complex' series of books, the others being 'Complex Heaven' and 'Complex Hell'. I really enjoyed reading this creepy, ghostly and at times scary book. You could truly feel how passionate the author was about his personal and emotional memories during the first half of the story - the recounts of his youth in the rough council estate of Pennywell incorporated into a paranormal horror story was very entertaining and I could picture all the scenes very vividly, knowing the area of Sunderland so well myself. The character of Richard's father Charlie was portrayed brilliantly, I really liked his dry humour at being a 'ghost' and I was very intrigued at the continuing story and his part in it. The wonderful relationship Richard had with his father was very endearing and it's clearly obvious just how close they both were. His manuscript of memoirs serving in the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry during the war were amazingly descriptive - I actually felt at times I was there in the jungle with the smell of gun-smoke, fear and death; sounds of the screaming wounded; the sense of terror and the unrelenting heat - I found all of this so compelling and I was extremely impressed at how the author highlighted the ordeals and the harsh conditions the soldiers had to endure. The Amigos, as the band of soldiers called themselves were a great bunch of lads, the bond of friendship, trust and loyalty was so evident you couldn't help but hope and pray they would all make it back safe and sound. The paranormal horror part of the story really comes to life here and the dark supernatural forces that some of them encounter changes their lives forever - the 'Dark Conscious' was truly terrifying. The whole storyline comes together flawlessly at the end and was certainly quite emotional. I imagine there must have been a great deal of gruelling research carried out for the story, the author has displayed a great deal of knowledge/history of the Durham Light Infantry. Richard Valanga is highly talented and imaginative author and I highly recommend this wholly original book.....it really is a frightening thought that the dead do walk our streets!!
