The Sermons of Martin Luther: Lenker Edition Volume 1

Rate this book
Luther is discussed too much, studied too little. The best introduction to Luther is this set of sermons. He taught the Biblical doctrine of the efficacy of the Word in the Means of Grace. Consequently, the preached sermon is the most important part of the ministry, not merely teaching Justification by Faith, but proclaiming the Gospel so that people find comfort and encouragement in their Savior Jesus, the Son of God. The selections below are being gathered from each volume for a final volume to inspire more people to read Luther, for pastors to preach in the style of the Reformer.

Fiery, lucid thoughts on scripture from the pen of the foremost of the reformers. Love him or hate him (and there really only seems to be those two choices in our modern culture) Luther lets you know exactly what he thinks about a vast array of issues. Perhaps thats why we love him or hate him.

For a long stretch I avoided reading Luther because I thought he was a loudmouthed, self assured, bragadocious ex monk with a messiah complex. And certainly he may be some of these, I don't think that he would even deny some of these. But to get caught up on his personality and miss what he was driving at, the belief in a God who loves us enough to send his son to die for us to reconcile us back to him, and that our point of access to this is simple faith and trust in the message of our reconciliation, missing this is missing the very heart of God towards man.

Luther does love his rabbit trails down the list of papal errors though. I had to skip some portions of his sermons because they were all just screeds against the Catholics. Right or wrong, I don't think 10 pages is justified during a sermon to your congregation. A cool 2 would have been enough, perhaps. Looking forward to the other volumes.
