Rate this book

When Dom George Kaiser is murdered, Detective Gavin DeGrassi doesn't know yet that he'll get more than he bargained for. Gavin is not familiar with the lifestyle and soon he must realize that he is out of his depth. They need a tutor. Enter Dr. Ben Haverson, a psychologist and well respected Dom who is specialized in counseling patients who are into the lifestyle. When Ben and Gavin meet for the first time, Gavin feels drawn to the charismatic man. Things move rather quickly and Gavin must face not only professional challenges but also personal issues. During this time Ben and Gavin become attached to one another. Moreover, Ben serves as an eye-opener for Gavin because Gavin feels the gravity that pulls him relentlessly towards Ben. It's time to stop lying to himself and accept what he is. Gay.

I felt a tear escape the corner of my eye and drizzle down my temple toward my hairline. Ben captured it on one finger, and then brought it to his lips, smearing the moisture over them. He dipped down and kissed me, my tear wet between us and salty on our tongues. It was that gesture more than anything else that told me he didn't think me weak, or unfocused, or a burden because of my scattered emotions. He was entrenched in them with me, and I was free to show them, to release them, and let them go.

Dating a man. I never thought I'd be strong enough to try, and it made me weak in the knees. That he was also a Dom gave it an element of danger I was drawn to, the gravitational pull of a black hole strong enough to yank planets out of alignment and into its stormy influence.

It takes more courage to kneel before another than to stand beside them.

For the first time, I wholly understood the words power exchange. In giving up my power to him, he was, in turn, giving me the power to realize my value, that what I had to offer of myself was worth giving to someone, and I had to trust that particular someone to cherish it.

I have been reading Safeword before Power Exchange and Safeword really knocked my socks off. I fell very hard for Ben and I really liked Gavin, too. I did enjoy Power Exchange a lot but my main issue was the weak mystery. Let me get to the point. I'd recommend you to read Power Exchange for the sake of the great characters and the evolving relationship between Ben and Gavin. I loved to see Ben and Gavin again, how they met and fell for one another and of course I loved the guys' irresistible chemistry. They sure know how to steam up a room! HOT! Neither Ben nor Gavin are perfect. Due to a past "incident" Ben's confidence as a Dom is shaken. I liked to see the private and conflicted man behind the professional and steadfast façade. Ben wanted to train Gavin yet at the same time he was unsure if he really had a right to ask Gavin to submit to him. But Gavin trusted Ben completely to explore his boundaries with him. And through Gavin's submission Ben regained a piece of himself that he thought was long lost. Besides, by submitting to Ben, Gavin allowed himself to let go of his responsibilities as a cop. Once in a while it felt good to let go of control, not thinking about anything at all, and just floating in emotions. On the one hand, Ben earned Gavin's submission by taking care of him and on the other hand, Ben showed Gavin how valuable and strong he is. With him Gavin could be who and what he is without reservations and fears. I really enjoyed how they connected on the emotional level. Ben and Gavin are devoted to one another, they truly belong together and I could feel it. They're a perfect match.

Plus, I adore Myah. Seriously, it doesn't happen every week that I meet a female character whom my reader's heart is going to hold so dearly. She is simply amazing; a down-to-earth woman with more than a beautiful face. She is smart and funny and takes no shit. She is very capable, supportive and empathic, and she can have my back anytime. I think I have a little girl crush on her. *blushes* Here is a little sample Myah style:

When Gavin came out to his partner Myah, she said:

Bawahahahahaha…fuck...I love you, Myah!!!

 photo 8168ce32-88bb-4d8a-baf3-8c89835ccab4_zps7bee3710.jpg

Now let's talk about my main issue, the weak mystery. Granted, I knew who the killer was from the beginning because I have been reading Safeword before Power Exchange. I must say, however, it would have been easy to figure out the bad guy even if I hadn't read Safeword first. The author posted plenty of hints along the way that pointed to HUGE SPOILER as the killer. And the so-called final straw was the scene when HUGE SPOILER was incredibly upset and angry but poor Gavin was…um…otherwise engaged, so he couldn't put two and two together. I mean he saw that he was angry but didn't react at all in the end. Seriously? If I remember correctly then Gavin's boss told him in Safeword that he is his BEST detective. Well, if (big if) he is the best man on the force then I must say that I would expect more. I'd go so far and say that Gavin did a sloppy job and he acted like he was running a red light.

A couple of times I was like 'Ring any bells now?' I remember when they first met up with HUGE SPOILER, Gavin learned that HUGE SPOILER but what did he do? Nothing. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy, Gavin! Plus, I was annoyed that Gavin did not consult with Ben regarding the HUGE SPOILER I'm sure that Ben would have figured out that HUGE SPOILER was the killer. And then when Ben set up the meeting with HUGE SPOILER why did Gavin not wait for Myah? Why did he not cancel the meeting? Why? She wanted to check him out again. She wanted to ask questions about his But no, Gavin had to jump the gun. I really don't know what he was thinking. Probably nothing at all. Oh, the final highlight was when Gavin HUGE SPOILER Geez…Baba was like…WTF are you doing, Gavin???

Let me clarify something. HUGE SPOILER

WARNING / I advise you to read the following spoilers because queasy readers might want to go prepared into this story.
Power Exchange contains explicit sex and language (incl. toys, bondage, voyeurism, some public play but not between the MCs). There is an explicit scene but NOT between Ben and Gavin because they are not into edge play at all. Also, Ben and Gavin before the epilogue. This scene led to Gavin's panic and anxiety attacks and the whole fallout he had to deal with in Safeword. Still, you can read Power Exchange and skip those few pages. I'm sure it wouldn't detract from your overall enjoyment of the story. Time-wise Safeword pretty much picks up where Power Exchange left off.

So, while the mystery was anything but stellar, Ben and Gavin's relationship and the adorable Myah kept me glued to the pages. If you are going to read Power Exchange first then keep on reading because the real treat is the sequel Safeword. Safeword really takes their relationship onto a new and much more intimate level. *swoon*

"No matter what happens, what scares you, what thrills you, I've got you. Do you believe me?"

I think this quote is the perfect transition to the sequel. Ben got him, and even more so in Safeword.

Recommended read.

I want my very own Ben.

And I'm not a fan of BDSM, not really. But lately I'm finding such good books that give a different meaning to it all. I'm getting the magic in it and the beauty of the relationship Dom/sub. I find it exhilarating and even out-earthly. So if you are one of those scared about the topic, this one is the amongst the best to start it. As a friend told me, it's BDSM 101, which is not synonymous of naive. It was HOT!

This was what I expected from a BDSM! Not so sweet that your teeth ached and not so rough that you couldn’t read it without difficulties. And of course we had mystery, a crime to solve! Actually, our sub had to solve it because he is a detective (Gavin)! Loved both characters, especially Ben for being so attending toward Gavin. Loved how he treated Gav, not rushing him, not being so difficult toward him, not being confusing… Told in single POV (Gavin), 1st person, I didn’t need to know Ben’s thoughts because I could see them through Gavin’s eyes, I could feel them through his actions… Enjoyed the development between them. It’s the first installment in the "Power Exchange" series and it’s not cliffy. My only issue was that the mystery part wasn’t that strong! There were clues that someone as a detective shouldn’t neglect them! It’s slow-paced (both solving the crim and the relationship between MCs) and low on angst. Overall, this was my first read by this author and I liked it, hope you enjoy it as well!

***4.75 Suspense and Submission Stars***

”It takes more courage to kneel before another than to stand beside them.”

Why have I waited so long to read this?! The answer to that is plain and simple….I’m an idiot!

Gavin DeGrassi is a homicide detective that comes from a family of cops. He loves his job and making a difference in the world. However, he has a very unsatisfying personal life. He’s married to a cold, status-hungry wife and a family that although loving, can be rather pushy with their expectations. His world is turned upside down with the murder of George Kaiser, a bisexual Dominant. Gavin is thrust into the publicly misunderstood world of BDSM. In order to get a better understanding of the case, a consultant is hired to assist. Dr. Ben Haverson is a psychologist who specializes in BDSM patients, and also a well-known Dom in the community.

From the moment these two meet, you feel the energy. Gavin is intrigued by Ben. Not only by his knowledge of the BDSM world, but by the possibility of what it might be like to submit. As Gavin begins to delve deeper into George’s murder and the BDSM community, his marriage implodes. And all of a sudden he finds himself unburdened with the weight of being in a cold marriage and decides it’s time to pursue his own desires…to unlock the part of himself that he’s kept buried for so long. He finds himself confiding in Ben and no longer wanting to fight the attraction he feels. As Ben explains to Gavin the workings of a D/s relationship, Gavin finds that he’s more than a little intrigued….this may be what he needs.

”Train me, Ben. Let me submit to you.”

”It was that gesture more than anything else that told me he didn’t think me weak, or unfocused, or a burden because of my scattered emotions. He was entrenched in them with me, and I was free to show them, to release them, and let them go.”

Ben is like no Dom I’m ever read about before. He has a quiet confidence and dominance. I absolutely LOVED him! He guided Gavin through his submissive cravings with patience and understanding. He gave Gavin a safe place to express how he felt, share what he needed and fulfill his desires.

”I’ll take what I want. You’ll give me what I need. In return, I’ll take on your burdens, set you free.”

As the investigation expands with another murder, Gavin is even more determined to find the killer. Not only does it appear the killer is targeting gay Doms, but with his recent revelations, it now feels personal. Can Gavin find the killer before it’s too late? What happens when Gavin’s new lifestyle puts him and Ben on the killer’s radar?

OMG this book….THIS BOOK!! I was on one hell of a ride. Between trying to figure out the killer and going on Gavin’s emotional journey of self discovery, I couldn’t put my kindle down! He has so much that he’s dealing with and Ben is such a well of strength for him. He allows Gavin to set the pace of their relationship, while also easily pushing them forward. His patience and understanding of the balance that Gavin needed had me melting and swooning. Ben knew he couldn’t just tell Gavin what he needed to hear, he had to show him….make him FEEL it.

”For the first time, I wholly understood the words power exchange. In giving up my power to him, he was, in turn, giving me the power to realize my value, that what I had to offer of myself was worth giving to someone, and I had to trust that particular someone to cherish it.”

Yaoi slave photo: man slave 1276800.jpg

Even though one of the main aspects of this book is BDSM, there wasn’t a heaviness to it. The focus really had more to do with the connection between the characters; the amount of trust that goes into a D/s relationship, the deeper understanding of your partner’s needs and your desire to fulfill them. The steam level was perfect and although I figured out the killer before the big reveal, it certainly didn’t take anything away from the story.

Gavin and Ben have easily become one of my favorite couples. They were absolutely perfect for each other. An unyielding love with quiet strength, undeniable trust and a fiery passion.

”My chest flooded with warmth, at how this confident man – this person who had not once judged me for my inexperience or my uncertainty, had only held my hand and unhesitatingly walked with me through the scariest revelation of my life – had wormed his way behind my closet door and given me what I’d been afraid no one else could. Acceptance.”

Knocking this down this time around, and that's one of the reasons I don't like re-reads. We change and we pay attention to different things. The love word came too fast and the mystery was ridiculous.

I can’t believe how much I changed 🤕🤕

Not sure I'll be reading the next.
Peace!

After reading a few bad books in a row

I have to say that it feels damn good giving this one 4.5 Stars.

It was my first time reading A.J.Rose and I loved it.

 Strong and credible storyline
 Excellent support characters
 Hot couple
 Erotica/BDSM

I loved the way the book was written rich in detail. It was extremely engaging. I need to give this some emphasis because I am not in too much detail. It makes me bored to death. And that is why I have to take my hat off for this author. I devoured the book.

She was also so good developing the other characters. From the @sshole (Trent) there is always one, his partner (Myah) to Gavin’s family.

♥♥♥ 4.5 KINKY STARS ♥♥♥

Once again, this one was one of the many books that was buried under my pile of 'to read' books that kept getting pushed to the back. Well, I can't believe I didn't read this sooner because wow...this book was pretty damn good.

As soon as I started the book, I was pretty much hooked. I didn't know how it would all pan out, since I knew Gavin would be in a relationship with Ben at some point. The mystery aspect of it, did have me sickened and intrigued. I had a hard time putting this down, even though 'real life' made me do just that many times while reading this.

I really liked Gavin, pretty much from the start. It was pretty rough reading about his relationship with his wife Victoria. I did not like her, at all. I didn't like how she wanted to boss him around and not try to compromise in some way. Then again, he didn't either, but he did try at one point. What I did love, was when he met Ben. And don't worry because Gavin does not cheat. Anyway, I loved seeing him become comfortable in his skin, and how Ben made him feel. After Gavin was in the closet for so long, it was wonderful to read about him finally accepting his gay self.

Ben...I LOVED!! I don't know what is was about this psychologist-Dom, but I really did love him. I love how patient he was and how he cared for Gavin. Just loved him! I also really appreciated that I was able to learn a bit more about the BDSM world through Ben. It was quite scary but quite interesting as well. I loved seeing Ben and Gavin's relationship grow. Yes it was pretty fast, but that was because of the nature of their relationship that required so much trust.

The writing was really good, I thought. Although I will say, I kind of figured out who the killer was pretty early on. Still, that didn't ruin my enjoyment of it. I loved some of the secondary characters, mainly Cole and Myah, they were awesome. I loved the romance in this book which had me melting and swooning. Then there was the steam, which had me melting and swooning over the hotness of it. Seriously, it was scorching. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to dive into the next.

I really liked this one. Up to a point.

I enjoyed the MC's and their relationship development and the murder mystery thing was good too. Up to a point.

I read it straight through, feeling invested in the outcome. Up to a point.

I reached that point at about 75% when the murder mystery becomes ... well, a joke really. It's so obvious a whodunit I felt like a kid again watching a pantomime shouting and furiously pointing at the bad guy: "He's behind you, He's behind you", while the hero looks everywhere BUT!
Gah ...I hate the too stupid to live scenarios - it devalues my respect for the MC's intellect in a big way.

But I liked the writing; it was effortless being drawn into this story and these characters are overall worth getting to know; even though they all need a slap round their dumbass heads. The kink is a bit of a how to, but it suits the plot.

Overall it was well done. Up to a point.

~POWER TO THE OBVIOUS KILLER~

Gavin DeGrassi is hiding deep in the closet, so deep there is glimpses of Narnia in there. He is a Detective who loves his job of helping people and catching the bad guys. He has a wife who doesn't exactly want him working the field but would rather see him climb the justice ladder and sit behind a desk. To make matters worse his parents are on board with his wife Victoria, and they make it a weekly habit to get on his case about starting a family and the dangers of his job. Throw in his diarrhea of the mouth partner and Gavin always finds himself the man in the middle, always trying to smooth things over.

Gavin and his partner are called to the scene of a crime, and it’s a crime unlike anything they've seen before. Looks like a BDSM scene gone badly, but there is underlying of something more sinister at play. This investigation leads them to the bdsm community and Gavin is feeling a serious pull. They will need expert help with this one and in comes Ben Haverson a psychologist and a Dom and Gavin is feeling a serious pull to him too. Things go from bad to worse (well not really) when Gavin walks in on his wife and partner in bed. Suddenly, a weight has been lifted off his shoulder and maybe he can live the life he has always wanted. First things first, he has gotta catch a killer.

Without giving too much away, Gavin is submissive which really comes across from the beginning. The way he was with his wife and is easy going and compassionate nature. He blossoms as a sub with Ben (which I kinda feel is conflict of interest) because with his new discoveries I felt like they pushed him away from doing a good job on his investigation.

I enjoyed the writing a lot, and found myself completely hooked from beginning. I am a sucker for a good D/s story and Power Exchange has that but.... I did have a few problems with it.

~Gavin, he had his head in the clouds. I felt like after his hook up with Ben he completely lost his A-game.

~The wife Victoria she just disappeared. She seemed like a stubborn and persevering type of chick, so I cannot understand how she just up and disappeared. Did not work well with her personality.

~The killer, He couldn't have been more obvious if he were wearing neon-flashing lights saying "Killer Here". This irked me and made the ending all lukewarm water. Nothing frustrates me more than an obvious killer *grrrr* and no one sees it.

I did enjoy the slow development of a D/s relationship between Ben and Gavin. It wasn't a rush into the hardcore bondage stuff but a slow grind into them finding what worked for them. On that note, I did not love the characters but did like them. The mystery part was done well up to a point and after it started to feel ridiculous. The excitement I had reading in the beginning slowly started to dwindle and when it was time to catch the killer I could have cared less.

Even with all the things I disliked, I did enjoy a majority of the story and I liked the writing. This publisher seems to be pushing out books I’ve been enjoying a lot.

Should You Read It? Most definitely, if you like BDSM but can't stomach the hardcore kind written in detail. There is something very sweet and captivating about Gavin and Ben's relationship, and if you have no problem with a flaunting killer :D

Those clueless about BDSM will enjoy A.J. Rose's "Power Exchange". Detective Gavin falls for his BDSM consultant on a serial murder case, Dr. Ben. Ben's a Dom therapist and Gavin's married...to a woman. So you figure them apples. But if you love Law & Order:SVU, like I do, you'll also like this story. Now while I am a huge fan of the show, the first two seasons were a little hokey.

And guess what? This read like a first season episode. There were two central storylines going on: Gavin's coming out/entry into BDSM 101 and the uncurious case of the clueless serial killer. so to better understand my dilemma of rating this, I'll just discuss the highs and lows of this, shall I?

Gavin's coming out/entry into BDSM 101--FOUR STARS!

I'm going to rate the strong part of the story first which was Gavin the man and the submissive. Dr. Ben was a wonderful guide into the world of kink. See Gavin he's been lying to himself and who he truly is his whole life. He knows he's gay but in a large cop family, that was not going to fly. So he married a deceitful bitch who ends up cheating on him with...well read the story to find out who.

The author did a bang up job with creating the scenes - I felt like I was in those ropes with Gavin. Dr. Ben's a good Dom. The best Dom I've read? No but he's pretty good and understanding. I guess that's the therapist part.

These two made a believable couple and what sold me the most was the epilogue where I felt they reacted realistically to the hardships they endured in the final chapter.

Now unfortunately I compared this to the more amateur SVU episodes, yes?

So come along to The uncurious case of the clueless serial killer--TWO STARS and an eye roll

Really?

Seriously?

I think my sock solved the damn case before Gavin did. Hell a sandwich could solve the frigging case before Gavin could remove the cock haze he seemed to be under. Gavin was a shoddy detective but there were hints to being average once in awhile. Unfortunately after Ben was introduced with his tricks and toys...Gavin just was bleh as a detective.

Good dick will do that to you. Gavin was a victim of being dickmatized. So from now on in my review instead of Detective Gavin he'll be hereby know as Dickmatized Gavin. The serial killer in this story was easily guessable and the evidence was turned down by Dickmatized Gavin because he just couldn't pull his thoughts together.

It got to be frustrating especially towards the end when he just skips away from common sense and into the land of Cocklandia where rivers of semen run abundant.

But I digress and don't want to fall under the cock spell Gavin seemed to be under before I forget to end this review.

So averaging out the reviews, we'd get THREE STARS but the cover is getting an extra half star damn it because it reminded me of that scene when Ben ties up Gavin and they...

Uh-oh, maybe I am under the dickmatized haze too. :P

4.3 Stars - strong and engaging - I was both stunned, terrified and charmed

Book #1

~ Read in October 2013... ~ A VERY late review!!

There was never any review written. Now it's too late to really do this book justice, but I still want to say some words. First of all, I liked this novel a lot - and even more the subsequent second book (Safeword).

~**~**~**~**~**~

A great start for a two book series. I was both frightened of nasty stuff in the crime part, but above all completely captivated by the characters' intense emotions and desires. A "straight" man takes a big step into a whole new way of life and it is an interesting journey.

Partly includes this attempts to review, both of the books.
(5 stars for the second part - Safeword)

~**~**~**~**~**~

This two-books-series is about, the "straight" Detective Gavin DeGrassi and the gay Dom and Psychologist Dr. Benjamin 'Ben' Haverson. It is romances with a lot of police work and big crime parts in them. A good, and well written, mix in my opinion.

These books were both very thrilling and quite tough (...bloody) to read in the crime part. The next book was maybe lesser predictable than this first one in the "who did it" part. It was not that hard to guess here. The daily murder investigative work bt the detectives and the policemen were anyway engaging to follow.
“...It's more than a desire for recognition as the instrument of the Dom's gratification, though the recognitaion is a sub's revard....”

The romantic parts, was to my surprise, really good and well explained and described as well. I was nervous (of course), as always when I read a BDSM story. Those scary clubs always makes me shudder. I can not get really comfortable with them. I'll maybe get used to them some day?! - As I said in an status update: "It is perhaps a bit of BDSM lessons in this novel, but that's good for me."

~ Fortunately, this book was more explanatory than hard exercise in the tougher D/s elements. This book could be a perfect read for a newbie to BDSM. ~
 photo image_zpsd3c85606.jpg

This first installament Power Exchange was filled with both anxiety, some (obvious for me) fear of some newly discovered strange lust and emotions, ...For this so far straigt cop - but don't fear it was just pretty light D/s bondage play for him here. It was a also lot of nervousness over to dare to come out to your big "cop-family". Not always that easy when you are a newborn gay sub.

Gavin's struggle, in tiny steps, to come out from the secret closet, even at work. That was heartbreaking to follow. Police's sometimes seems, in gay romances in any case, to be the worst homophobic practitioners and nasty adults bastard-bullies. Fortunately and luckily, got Gavin pretty soon a wonderful new female colleague. I loved her. Kiss and thanks dear!

It was of course partly also scorching hot. But as I said, in a tender and nice way. This is first and last a smexy romance.
 photo image_zps9c69d1c3.jpg

’For the first time, I wholly understood the words power exchange. In giving up my power to him, he was, in turn, giving me the power to realize my value, that what I had to offer of myself was worth giving to someone, and I had to trust that particular someone to cherish it.’

The title is absolutely perfect and tell you a lot. I think Gavin was both brave and took great personal steps in the kink and submission parts. Ben is a wonderful and careful lover and man. Who would not want to submit to him?

The psychologist and the police had a pretty tough fight with both nasty killer and to find each other. I read with interest both parts (as an old crime/thriller fiction fan and a newly M/M romance lover).

Too sum up; I enjoyed, but breathless quite often, and I soooo wanted to read the second part instantly. Nice work A.J. Rose, you caught me in these two men's tough world.

~**~**~**~**~**~

Do you need to read the second book Safeword?
No, you don't. ...but the second part is sooo good, better in some ways. You will get a good end here and it isn't a silly and awful cliffhanger to fear for.

~**~**~**~**~**~

A recommended series - I loved it. On one of my favorite shelfs now.

I LIKE - scary but good ... and nice romantic in the end

Elizabetta told me about this listopia list here on GR (M/M romances) BDSM for Newbies and this first book Power Exchange is #4 on that list.

The covers for this series are amazing. Right? But they are maybe more Bondage BDSM teasing than what the books actually are...

Detective Gavin DeGrassi is out to solve a murder case involving a Dom who was killed in his own playroom and by his own toys. When the BDSM context gets too complex for the cops, they call in Dr Ben Haverson, a therapist and self-proclaimed Dom, to assist them with his insider knowledge.

However, Gavin soon develops a private interest in the BDSM culture and in Ben in particular, which makes handling the case more difficult for him than he can foresee, especially as the killer is striking again and again, every time right under Gavin's nose.

I read this novel as part of a New Year resolution about trying to pick books from genres I wouldn't usually touch. I'm not a fan of BDSM and never read anything related to the matter (except for Deliverance: Hooch and Matt's Story, but come on, if you've read SF, you gotta read that one too. Not that it was in any way a flattering book regarding the BDSM lifestyle...).

So I picked this book knowing full well I would probably not like it, but I will still try to give an unbiased review here.

From my beginner's POV, as a BDSM themed book this deserves the full 5 stars! The BDSM philosophy and lifestyle are explained in detail here (without info dumping, which is quite a feat) and I think they make perfect sense. I liked the level of trust required to form a D/s relationship and I also found several sexual activities quite exciting (especially the public scenes at that club).

BUT, I have a serious problem with one partner wanting to dominate the other. Everything is explained and rationalized perfectly here, so this is just my personal attitude that I cannot overwrite, no matter how good this book is.

I don't like one guy requesting obedience from his partner, having him kneel in front of a Dom and call him 'Sir' and especially I don't like the thought of inflicting pain as a means of sexual stimulation. I understand that these 'scenes' are more or less just elaborate roleplay, still I can't stand it.
I constantly found myself wanting to take that paddle away from Ben and smack him on the back of the head with it for humiliating his boyfriend...

I want my romance couples to be equals. I just can't work with a D/s relationship in the books I read.

Still, for readers interested in BDSM, this book seems like a perfect start!

Regarding the crime plot....

OMG, my feelings were somewhere between

description
and
description

Holy s#$%!!

Gavin must be the dumbest cop ever!! How could he not figure out who the killer was??? He had asked all witnesses, collected all relevant information and STILL he did not make the connection? His partner even told him in detail WHO the most likely suspect was and all that Gavin said was

"It's flimsy, Myah."

He even knew HOW the killer got to his victims and manipulated them and YET he left the killer alone with his coffee cup like a complete moron.

description

HOWEVER, even when Myah (the only one who actually did ANY kind of thinking in this case) found

And all because he was too busy *playing* with his consultant on the case?

I mean...

description

A predictable plot in a crime romance may be excused, but a detective who acts this ignorant and unprofessional? No way.

2 stars for the crime plot!

My total rating is 3.5 stars!

Thanks for this interesting read!

THIS IS A BRILLIANTLY WELL WRITTEN BOOK

Buddy read with the lovely ladies Awilk, Em, Laci Rain, Renee,

The only reason for 4 STARS instead of 5 was because I felt the murder plot overtook the story too much at times. However the relationship development between dom Ben and sub Gavin more than made up for it.

I loved it when Ben called Gavin 'Baby' it made my heart crush for Ben

This is a BDSM book, yet there is much more depth to it. The relationship between Ben and Gavin is beautifully written and is evident through their trust and commitment to each other.

The sex scenes left me in desperate need of this-

Another bonus to this book is if you are a BDSM virgin then the explanations are really thorough as they are explained as part of the crime case. Ben is also training Gavin for his role as a sub so he also explains aspects to him. This however can be a draw back if you are well acquainted with the BDSM terms/lifestyle and can lead you wanting to skim read past them.

'Master Lacey had said: exquisite torture, absolute trust, and the knowledge that new heights could be reached by letting oneself go that far, trust in another that deeply'

"Why Gavin. How would Victoria feel if she saw you looking at our consult like you just crawled out of the desert and he's a big Gulp of ice water?"

'Ben said 'My kink is the emotional subtlety and behavioural nuance of earning someone's submission'

'Ben said 'I've let a piece of myself slip away, and with you I have the chance to regain what I fought so hard to understand and master'

MY FAVOURITE QUOTE
"Ben-'I want to blindfold you, plug your ears, gag you, tie you up. Make it so the only thing you know is my touch. I want you hyper-aware of my fingers on your skin, of my lips and tongue exploring every inch of you. And I want you unable to move, so when I have you that helpless, you surrender to me'

WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK? yes I would to all loves of BDSM and m/m romance with a crime slant to the story
WHY WOULD I RECOMMEND IT? the relationship is progresses well and is perfectly written about and the sex is unbelievably hot

Rating: 4* of five

Everything Fifty Shades of Grey wasn't in terms of the BDSM lifestyle. Realistic depiction of how contracts between Dom and sub work, and how very deep a D/s bond becomes in a very short time. It's amazing what committing to eliminating bullshit and nonsense does for a relationship.

The mystery part wasn't deft. Gavin DeGrassi isn't detecting particularly well, given some very very basic events he seems simply not to have noticed....

I could have lived happily without chapter 13 being *quite* so intense. Going over the top here was skating on a razor's edge of being torture porn.

I'll definitely pick up the next two in the series.

"I have you where I want you," Ben said, approaching me. "I can do with you what I will. You trust me not to harm you. I take that trust to heart....I'll take what I want. You'll give me what I need. In return, I'll take on your burdens, set you free."

Gavin DeGraw is a detective and comes from a family of cops. It's in his blood, it's in his bones, and he takes his job seriously. Possibly a bit too seriously, and it's put quite the strain on his marriage. When a brutal case involving the BDSM community is given to him and his partner, even more of his time is needed. Ben is a man who is brought in to consult on the case due to his experience with certain kinks and the fact that he is a psychologist. There is an immediate draw for Gavin to this new world that he is investigating. Not only is he fascinated by the intensity of some of the scenes, but a closely held secret is also beginning to be brought to the surface. Gavin begins to understand the roles of those in a D/s relationship, and is more than a little interested in learning more.

Amid this eye opening intro into the BDSM scene, Gavin is opening himself up to a world he never thought he'd come to accept. But there are consequences for his honesty with himself. Above all, Gavin is a good cop, a good man, and he works diligently to solve this case.

What I loved:
Gavin! Ben! Cole! Myah! These characters are so well rounded, and each person has a distinct personality all their own. I'm most definitely not a connoisseur of gay romance, but I often find that women are portrayed as such evil bitches, and boy, do I get tired of that. I like how some women in this book are made out to be wonderfully loyal and magnificently beautiful all on their own. This facet mows down that demarcating line between a person's worth due to gender. Being a girl myself, I appreciate that.

I liked how the BDSM elements were there but didn't completely take over the story. Gavin and Ben have lives outside of the club, outside of the playroom. And they have a normal life with each other, as well.

"It takes more courage to kneel before another than to stand beside them. Subs are not weak. They simply choose to let someone else fulfill their desires, and trust that person to do so. They put their Dom's wishes ahead of their own, and their payoff is a happy Dom, who also rewards them with praise and love the the safety net of guiding them around life's obstacles.

I was worried because Gavin is married. Won't say much because it will be a spoiler but don't let it hold you back, mnkay?

What I didn't love:
OMG, the detective work was pretty frigging lame. It wasn't obvious at first whodunnit but yeah...when you know, you'll know, and yet it still took the detectives quite some time after I knew to figure it out. Made for an exciting ending, but still.

Another thing that slightly bothered me is how the D/s relationship is explained. Granted, I literally have NO firsthand knowledge of the subject, and I'm certain everyone's experiences and feelings differ. But when the submissive's role is laid out, it just seemed to me that it was all made for the Master's pleasure. You submit to please your master. You do what he wants ONLY to make him happy, because pleasing him is all you want to do. There was more to it than that, but I wanted more focus on how the feeling of powerlessness is freeing for a sub. That aspect is alluded to, and for me, that is the entire draw of a submissive role in a D/s relationship. To be completely uninhibited, unable to freely stop without safewording...no embarrassment or feelings of inadequacy because your Master is in control of all things. One quote spoke to me in this regard, and I wanted to point it out:
"In fact, he gave me order in a new way, a way in which I didn't have to think, where my only responsibility was to follow the rules, do what he expected to make him happy. He found room to take me away from the burden of heroism, from the heaviness I chose to shoulder, allowing me a sanctioned moment to set aside my responsibilities and just feel.

Thanks to Marco for the recommendation. Mwah!

4 Stars! Way more than a book about BDSM!

So much to love about this book and Gavin, Ben, Cole and Myah are at the top the list! Four very likeable, relatable characters that each brought something very special to the read. Gavin, so sweet, wants to please everyone, he's lost and unsure how to proceed with his personal and professional life. Ben, he exudes authority, sure and confident, yet not cocky, comfortable in his skin and wants his skin touching Ben's! Myah, a good cop and friend, she's everything I love in a strong female character. Cole...BEST. BROTHER. EVER!!

One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was that it didn't just focus on the BDSM lifestyle. Yes, it was informative, but Gavin and Ben were so much more than how they like to play in the bedroom and their sexual proclivities. I'm pretty sure Myah has some secrets too, and I'm hoping that as the series continues the author delves into her life a little more. And of course Cole, loved what we read about him, but what is it that drives him, makes him so sensitive and protective? Essentially this is about Gavin and Ben, but there has to be more where the other characters are concerned...right? While there is somewhat of a satisfying ending, the author baits the reader, and I for one enjoyed the worm on the hook and am going back for more.

This could have been more than a 4 star read, but one thing really bothered me.

The suspense portion of the book was rather gruesome, didn't bother me in the least, and I never expected the intensity of this aspect of the read, especially at the end! Took a while to resolve, but I was okay with it. Other than the one issue addressed in the spoiler, I enjoyed Power Exchange very much, had a hard time putting it down, and found it for the most part to be a well rounded read. I'm looking forward to reading Safeword.

I have read a few BDSM-themed books and depending on the author and the story line, D/s relationships can vary an awful lot, as they do in real life as well (I assume).
I do have trouble with 24/7 complete power exchange relationships and extreme BDSM, but I've come to really like most other versions. Ben and Gavin I totally loved.
I was admittedly fascinated by learning more about the 'lifestyle' and following Gavin as he finds out what it takes to submit. The whole philosophy about dominance and submission was beautifully explored. And it was intense. And hot. And incredibly touching.

"They say it takes more courage to kneel before another than stand beside them."

"... their submission is a gift given to those who've earned their trust."

"In giving up my power to him, he was, in turn, giving me power to realize my value, that what I had to offer of myself was worth giving to someone..."

It was eye-opening to see how Ben's dominance and acceptance allows Gavin "to set aside his responsibilities and just feel", and let himself go. I liked how much stress is put upon the fact that a D/s relationship can only fully function when it is based on trust and respect and full consent of both parties.

And Ben! *Dreamy sigh* He is just ... hmmm ... dreamy and wonderful and ... have I said dreamy before??? The way he reveres Gavin, puts him above everything, for submitting to him was gorgeous. That man is beautiful, inside and out. Finding out about his painful past and him doubting himself showed what a stellar guy he is. Hmm, dreamy, if you know what I mean.

I really loved this book and all the action, but one major flaw in the plot kept me from giving it the full 5 stars.
HUGE, MASSIVE spoiler! Please do not read if you're planning to read this book. This WILL spoil it for you. Believe me, I usually read the spoilers - because I'm kind of weak that way - but, trust me, you wouldn't want to know this one!

But having said that - this is an awesome book, and I'm off shortly to read the second one.
It is obvious that what happened to Gavin and Ben will have some repercussions, can't wait to find out...

HIGHLY recommended!

I really enjoyed this book. Apart from a great plot this book shined a positive light on BDSM practices and made me see the emotional side in the relationship between Dom and his submissive. It was well-paced and had a good balance between sexual and criminal parts. All the secondary characters added to the wholesomeness of the book.

Gavin Degrassi is a homicide detective and he loves his job. He is loyal, steadfast and a very decent human being. He is married and it all seems to be picture perfect. Only he knows how far from truth that is. His life is slowly falling apart and he does not even know it until a string of gruesome murders shake the BDSM community. When that happens a consultant is invited to give his insight on possible motive. Ben Haverson is a Dom and he reads people well. I think he sees the real Gavin and what he needs. It all comes together when Gavin's marriage is in shambles and he finally admits to himself that he is free to be himself - to be out and proud and Ben is there to guide him, support him and teach him. He is the perfect Dom to his perfect submissive. I loved the patience and care Ben had for Gavin, how easy-going and sure he was when he took Gavin to new heights, how helpful he was when Gavin was falling apart. Ben had issues of his own and Gavin unknowingly helped him gain his confidence back, to become the man Gavin needed, the man he used to be.

The murders were grisly, gut-churning and simply painful. Even the detectives found it hard to deal with the feelings that they caused, and having known some of the victims made it too real and scary. I loved this whole part except for the fact that the killer was way too obvious. And that made it a little less thrilling but still the book as a whole was wonderfully written, engrossing and exciting. I loved the characters, the investigative aspect, the intimacy and care and all the settings of the book. I highly recommend it! I had a great time!

Gavin a courageous and awesome men, and Ben *sigh* who wouldn’t want to submit to him!!

"For the first time, I wholly understood the words power exchange. In giving up my power to him, he was, in turn, giving me the power to realize my value, that what I had to offer of myself was worth giving to someone, and I had to trust that particular someone to cherish it."

The book title is exactly what this book is all about,Gavin’s emotional journey of self discovery and the powerful connection between him and Ben, the understanding of your partner’s needs, the trust that goes into a D/s relationship ... WOW, absolutely perfect!!

The mystery /romance blended well together!

I loved also some of the secondary characters, mainly Cole and Myah, they were awesome!

The scenes with Gavin and Ben… scorching hooooooot!

Highly recommended! My first A.J. Rose's book and love it, can't wait to dive into the next.

Looks left...looks right...no one is currently reading it?
Do I really have to go first? Unf...friends!

Well written, well thought out mystery-plot (a plot!), touching D/s romance...loved this book and read it almost in one go without skipping a single word.
I`m no expert in police procedure and BDSM, just read about these themes in books but I think there went a huge amount of research into this book - forensics, edge play, D/s dynamics - everything in the story sounded convincing and plausible...means - I bought it.

More telling than showing - usually considered a flaw in storytelling - fit perfectly here. It made the gruesome murders, edge play in BDSM scenes and thorough investigations/forensics less gritty and let the story flow smoothly. I found that very pleasant for a change...
That doesn`t mean the book is Wuss-safe. One scene at the end SHOWED!

Another plus - romance and mystery blended well together. When reading the mystery parts I didn`t miss the romance, when reading the romance I didn`t miss the investigations. (Do I make sense here?)

Great cast of full-fledged secondary characters - some to hate, some to love...(Hey, Trent - you got what you deserved, Sweetie!)

The romance - a slow burner.
Likeable characters in an emotional, believable journey of growing togehther, safe sane and consensual, a touching care and tenderness even in medium-BDSM scenes...
Sex-scenes from vanilla to the above mentioned medium-BDSM, hot but not overly graphic and not one of them repetitive or gratuitous - they fit well into the story.

I didn`t give the book five stars because the last chapter felt rushed in comparison to the rest of the book and the ending too abrupt - there was more to tell.

Hmmm...I forgot to tell something about the story...*shrugs*...go, read it!

Hi all, I have never written a review so please bear with me....

You know how covers or titles can determine an opinion of what inside??? this one kind of made me think it was heavy BDSM, in my narrow minded view that meant scary beating, pain, and control of sub by dom. Well after reading this, not so much. This book made me understand so much more about the Dom/Sub relationship. I loved Ben, and how he explained evrything to Gavin. I loved how Gavin not only embraced being gay,(after the miserable marriage) he slowly embraced being submissive to Ben. The love and trust between the 2 of them is what I got out of it, incredible.

And, oh yeah, the murder investigation, (thats how they met) I kinda figured out who the killer was early on, but that didnt matter.
I loved Myah and Gavins brother Cole.

Well I guess what im trying to say is dont let the cover or title deter from reading the story. Like what the cover of TJ Klunes Bear Otter & the Kid did, it made me pass by it for a long time, worst thing I ever did, THAT BOOK WAS INCREDIBLE.

Power Exchange has definitly been an amazing read. I have to admit that the blurb - a young detective solving a murder in the BDSM word and slowly getting pulled deeper and deeper into it - has been a very intriguing topic. I have been looking forward to reading this book and it has been a perfect choice.

The characters have been very ineresting, I enjoyed the way their relationship evolved and I wanted to read more and more about them. However, the murder has also been an important part of the book! And while a lot of readers - including me - have been unable to understand how Gavin has been able to miss all the hints in front of his eyes, the story still felt credible. Having so many things going on in his life, Gavin might not have been the best detective we have ever met, but he has been credible and very likeable!

I am very curious to read more about Ben and Gavin's relationship in the second installment of this series and I really hope that they will be able to overcome the aftermath of what happened. They really deserve their happy ending!

Okay - cannot pass this up - the cover alone is worth the purchase.

3.5 Updated for review.

I rather enjoyed this book. The slow boil between the murder case as well as Gavin's discovery of what he needed in partner as well as in a D/s relationship I felt was done well. This book went into great detail regarding the lifestyle, different relationships and different levels of play inside BDSM and really seemed to be honest and respectful.

What i did not like about this book was: the ending. For such an intelligent open cop, Gavin missed the 'duh' that everyone could see. He was even warned by his new partner and it seemed to remind me of Goofy 'ooohhh okkkayyyyy' with the exaggerated laugh after it. No need to worry? Really? huh - 4 brutal murders and it seemed to me there was a neon sign over the murderer and it was missed to the point of idiocy. I expected better.

Ok this was lowkey a bit too traumatic and I’m not sure I’m gonna continue the series just because of how brutal the killings and torture scene was. Like the BDSM rep was done really well but I felt terrible reading about the horrible ways these people died and the torture done to the main character and love interest was hard to get through and I might have scanned some reviews for the future books and it appears that the cases and bad stuff happening to characters only increases in cruelty and I think I want to live my life without having that live rent free in my head like this book is going to. A crime centric book has truly never left me feeling so terrible for the victims it still makes my heart sink a little thinking about it and I’ve never squirmed more during a torture scene and I’m saying that having gone through the Bloodraven torture scene without even wincing so despite the book being very well done I’m gonna protect my peace and leave things here 😗✌️

Wonderful book. I am kicking myself for ever putting it down (stupid, impatient hormones)

Those of you whom know me are already aware that I don't like to give many details away but in actuality I'm going to be vague because I REALLY WANT TO START BOOK 2, DAMN IT!!!

What an enjoyable murder mystery (is that an oxymoron?). My mind wasn't spinning due to numerous possible suspects, just enough to keep me guessing. The scenes between Gavin and Ben were phenomenal. Ben is a very meticulous lover and I enjoyed ever last page, paragraph, sentence ,word, letter of it .

Honestly, it was so well written that at times I felt like a peeping Tom peering through there window..... Wait, did someone say Tom?

I really enjoyed this one because of the following:

Gavin/Ben - I loved how their relationship evolved and what they became to each other.

Gavin/Cole - Brothers who truly loved each other.

Gavin/Myah - Great partners.

So obviously, I loved Gavin LOL! I thought he was great and I will definitely read book 2!

The 'mystery' part had me cracking up though as it was really easy to figure it out. Other than that...two thumbs up!

** 28/7/14. Re-read with Andrea. Having such a long gap between reads only emphasized for me what a fabulous book this is, some of the lines are just delicious, and Gavin, well he's just one of my fave characters full stop. Chock full of feelz, wonderful writing and characters. **

Loved it. 5 stars and

I adored Gavin and the 'will he, won't he come out of the closet' saga. Gavin, the youngest of 4 boys all of whom have some connection to the St Louis police force, if not actually in uniform, is a detective and is investigating some grisly murders whose victims embraced a BDSM lifestyle. His relationship with his wife was not the best it has to be said.... Once he tells Victoria to 'sling her hook' after catching her and Trent (Gavin's partner) doing the dirty at home in their bed, he immediately starts divorce proceedings and is so relieved and lightheaded at the thought that he no longer needs to play a role but instead can be true to himself, he visits the club 'Collared' where the guys who've been murdered 'play', and there he chats with Dr Ben Haverson who has been asked to consult and act as liaison/advisor between the BDSM community and the police. Ben recognises straight away that Gavin is a born submissive, and it just so happens that Ben is a Dom....

The actual amount of information in the book about BDSM was extremely educational albeit from a gay perspective. Book 2 already loaded on kindle and waiting to go. Great editing job from Fen.
