Two very short but powerful extreme horror stories. The first is heartbreaking, and the second is certain to induce queasiness. I enjoyed the author's straightforward style, and I look forward to reading more of his work.
DOUBLE BARREL HORROR continues on with this series of two stories per volume. This time around they are both written by John Boden. These super short stories being:
THERE WILL BE ANGELS is exactly the type of story I expect from Mr. Boden. A young boy is in distress and there are angels, but these are not the type of angels that will save him.
MARLENE THE MAGNIFICENT is NOT the type of story I expected from Mr. Boden. NOT. AT. ALL. Marlene actually IS magnificent and I wager that once you are introduced to her and her act, you will never forget it! A word of advice though? If she asks for your watch as part of her act, do NOT give it to her! *I feel like I have to give a little warning here: this story grossed me out. Totally. It was sick, it was gross, and it was fucking hilarious. I would PAY to see some of your faces as you're reading it. Seriously, I would. Okay, you have been warned.*
I've been a fan of John Boden for a year or two now, and his work always surprises and pleases me. These two short stories continue that tradition and I give this small volume my highest recommendation!
Both pieces here were strong in their own way. The first was heartbreaking, with prose that definitely made it more so. The second was hilariously disturbing and so wrong that it was right. As a whole this was very entertaining. Recommended!
There Will Be Angels, that was every parents worst nightmare of a short story!
Marlene The Magnificent, Marlene doing tricks at a kids party. But she is not pulling bunnies out of hat! She is pulling them out of……, Just read the story.
I've read quite a bit of Mr. Boden's stuff. The first story (There Will be Angels) in this 2-story collection is a much better example of what you normally get when reading a John Boden piece: Heartfelt, crushing, and sincere. I loved the first story. The second is not my thing. At all. But there is an audience for such things. However, if you're one to not enjoy such lewd script either, then I beg that you not let it deter you from reading the rest of what Boden has to offer elsewhere. That would be doing yourself a huge disservice. 3.5
