भयानक तूफानी सागर के सम्मुख शाहजादे ने अपने थके हुए घोड़े को रोकाय किन्तु पृथ्वी पर उतरना था कि सहसा दृश्य बदल गया और शाहजादे ने आश्चर्यचकित दृष्टि से देखा कि समाने एक बहुत बड़ा नगर बसा हुआ है । ट्राम चल रही है, मोटरें दौड़ रही हैं, दुकानों के सामने खरीददारों की और दफ्तरों के सामने क्लर्कों की भीड़ है । फैशन के मतवाले चमकीले वस्त्रों से सुसज्जित चहुंओर घूम-फिर रहे हैं । शाहजादे की यह दशा कि पुराने कुर्ते में बटन भी लगे हुए नहीं । वस्त्र मैले, जूता फट गया, हरेक व्यक्ति उसे घृणा की दृष्टि से देखता है किन्तु उसे चिन्ता नहीं । उसके सामने एक ही उद्देश्य है और वह अपनी धुन में मग्न है । अब वह नहीं जानता कि शाहजादी कहां है ? वह एक अभागे पिता की अभागी बेटी है । धर्म के ठेकेदारों ने उसे समाज की मोटी जंजीरों में जकड़कर छोटी अंधेरी कोठरी के द्वीप में बन्दी बना दिया है । चहुंओर पुराने रीति-रिवाज और रूढ़ियों के समुद्र घेरा डाले हुए हैं । क्योंकि उसका पिता निर्धन था और वह अपने होने वाले दामाद को लड़की के साथ अमूल्य धन-सम्पत्ति न दे सकता था । इसलिए किसी सज्जन खानदान का कोई शिक्षित युवक उसके साथ विवाह करने पर सहमत न होता था । लड़की की आयु अधिक हो गई । वह रात-दिन देवताओं की पूजा-अर्चना में लीन रहती थी । उसके पिता का स्वर्गवास हो गया और वह अपने चाचा के पास चली गई । ---समाज का शिकार से (कहानी)
