கி.பி.1325-1351 முகம்மதுபின் துக்ளக் திருவரங்கத்தில் உள்ள ரங்கநாதரின் கோவிலை இக்கொள்ளையிட முனைந்தான். பெரும்படையை எதிர்த்து கோவிலையும், கோவிலுள் உள்ள சிலைகள், ஆபரனங்கள் போன்றவற்றையும் காக்க திருவரங்க நகர மக்களும், ஆச்சாரியர்களும், தேவதாசிகளும் போராடினார்கள். நகர வாசிகள் ஆயுதமேந்தி போராடியதாகவும், தேவதாசிகள் இசுலாமிய படையினரை மயக்கி போராடியதாகவும் கருத்துண்டு. இப்போரில் பல வைணவர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டார்கள்.
உற்சவர் சிலை பாதுகாத்தல்
இசுலாமியர்களிடமிருந்து காக்க திருவரங்கத்தினை விட்டு பிற இடங்களுக்கு விலையுயர்ந்த ஆபரணங்கள், விக்ரகங்கள் போன்றவற்றை கொண்டு சென்று மறைத்தார்கள். உற்சவப் பெருமாளை திருக்கோட்டியூர், காளையார் கோவில், அழகர் மலை என்று பல இடங்களில் பதுக்கி வைத்திருந்து, இறுதியில் திருப்பதியில் பல காலம் பாதுகாப்பாக வைத்துள்ளார்கள். பின் கி.பி. 1371ல் உற்சவர் விக்ரகம் திருவரங்கத்திற்கு கொண்டுவரப்பெற்றது

An excellent book. Felt bad that I did not read this book before. The four volumes of this book each about 325 pages narrates the story of Tamilnadu during the 14th century. How a few dedicated devotees struggled to protect and save the sacred idol of Ranganathar. Amazing story written in lucid style. Got to learn some excellent tamil words which have these days gone out of use.

Excellent and interesting book. Gives insight about 47 years of struggle that south indian people gone through under sultan's regime. Enjoyed the book thoroughly. Learnt the history about srirangam and nam perumal. Astonished to know how much ppl of srirangam loved rangan.
The narration and details of the situation will take you to that era.

Positively reviewed by many people already. I will keep my personal opinion short - All history books written in Tamizh between Ponniyin Selvan and Thiruvarangan Ula are just commas between these two meaningful words.

I recently finished Thiruvarangan Ula ("The Journey of Lord Ranganatha"), and it is easily one of the most gripping historical fictions I’ve read this year. I had grown up reading Pushpa Thangadurai novels and was surprised to see this historical fiction written under his name Sri Venugopalan. Would not have made the connection unless my parents mentioned it. This book is a masterpiece of a different scale.
The story begins with a frantic race against time. We follow a protagonist who, upon hearing of the Delhi Sultanate’s impending invasion while in Kancheepuram, travels non-stop to alert the Srirangam temple. This sets the stage for a 48-year saga of survival. As the "epicenter" of Vaishnava philosophy, Srirangam was a prime target, and seeing figures like Vedanta Desika navigate this chaos adds such a layer of authenticity to the narrative.What struck me most in Volumes 1 and 2 was the portrayal of the geopolitical landscape. While the temple priests and devotees were risking everything to move the Utsava Moorthi through the deep interiors of Tamil Nadu, the local leadership was in shambles. The book doesn't sugarcoat the ineptitude of the South Indian kings, particularly the Pandyas, whose internal infighting left the gates wide open for the Sultanate. It was heartbreaking to read about the failed efforts of the Chalukyas and other empires to restore order while the Lord remained in exile.Volumes 3 and 4 shift the focus to the next generation and is titled Madhura Vijayam. I loved how the story evolved into a mystery, following new protagonists as they searched for the "missing" idol across Kancheepuram and Tirupati. The author weaves lessons of contemporary 14th-century history into a tale of trials, devotion, and eventual restoration. The novel spans roughly 48 years (1323–1371 AD) during which the idol was moved across various locations like Jyotishkudi, Tirumala, and Gingee before finally being reinstated in Srirangam by the Vijayanagara Empire.
For anyone interested in the history of South India or the resilience of the Vaishnava tradition, this is a must-read. It’s not just a story about a "procession"—it’s a story about a culture refusing to let its heart be extinguished.

A true incident beautifully brought out by the author along with fictional characters and love prevailing. The holy diety of Srirangam - Ranga peruman has been taken from place to place around Tamilnadu and Kerala to protect the statue of diety from looting of Mughals during their invasion in the 14th century. The love of people towards Ranga (the holy diety) and to protect him invaders, the struggles faces by the nominal people and even the kings is heart touching. A must read historical novel in Tamil.

A story which could pull off everyone irrespective of their age. If this book was made as a film it could be a bahubali-like film for the Tamil Film Industry. Starting from the story till the end of the book it was written in an interesting way. The Love Scenes are Top notch and while reading I was blushing all the way. And the emotional scenes at the end made us cry towards it. A Work that could tell about the Author over Centuries.

சலிப்புத்தட்டாத சுமாரான கதை. ஒரு நல்ல வரலாற்றுப் புனைவு போல, அந்த காலத்திற்கோ, இடத்திற்கு நம்மை அழைத்துச்செல்லவில்லை. கதாநாயகர்களிடம் வீரமோ அறிவுக்கூர்மையோ எதுவுமில்லை. கதையும் நிகழ்வுகளும் மிகவும் மேம்போக்காக நகர்கிறது.
நடுநிலையோடு கொஞ்சம் அறிவுடன் சிந்தித்தால் ஒரு சிலைக்கு இவ்வளவு அக்கப்போறா என்று சிரிப்புத்தான் வருகிறது.

ஸ்ரீ வேணுகோபாலனின் திருவரங்கன் உலா - அதிகம் பிரபல்யம் இல்லாதது போல இருந்தாலும், அனைவரும் கண்டிப்பாக படிக்க வேண்டிய ஓர் அற்புதமான ஆன்மீக வரலாற்று நாவல். ஸ்ரீவே மிகவும் சிறப்பாக கதையை எழுதியிருக்கிறார். ஒவ்வொரு பாகமும் ஒரு புதிர் அல்லது ஆச்சர்யத்தோடு முடிவதும், அடுத்த பாகத்தில் அதை வெளிப்படுத்துவதுமாக மிக வேகமாக கதை நகரும். கண்டிப்பாக எந்த ஒரு சமயத்திலும் படிப்பதில் சோர்வோ, தொய்வோ இல்லாமல் முழு ஈடுபாடோடு படிக்க முடியும்..

ஸ்ரீவே குறிப்பிட்டது போல, ஒரு சிறு படை அதுவும் சாதாரண மக்கள், கடவுளுக்காக மேற்கொண்ட முயற்சிகள் மெய்சிலிர்க்க வைக்கின்றன. அநேகமாக அந்த காலகட்டத்தில் நடந்த அணைத்து முக்கியமான நிகழ்வுகளையும் எளிமையாக கதையோடு எடுத்து சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்.
குலசேகரன் - கதையின் நாயகன். தொடக்கத்திலிருந்து நாயகனின் வீர செயல்களும், தீர்க்கமான யோசனைகளும் அவனை நல்லதொரு வைனானவனாக காட்டியிருப்பார். இதில் முக்கியமான விஷயம் என்னவென்றால் கதையில் வரும் அத்தனை அழகிகளும் குலசேகரனையே சுத்தி சுத்தி வருவது கொஞ்சம் மிகையாக இருக்கும்...
இதில் இன்னொரு குறை என்று பார்த்தால், எழுத்து பிழைகளும், சில வரலாற்று பிழைகளும் தான்.
1. ஜோதிஷ்குடி என்பதை இப்போதுள்ள காரைக்குடி என குறிப்பிடபட்டிருக்கும். ஆனால் ஜோதிஸ்க்குடி என்பது மதுரையின் யானை மலை அருகே உள்ள ஓர் கிராமம். இப்பொழுது அதன் பெயர் யா.கொடிகுளம். இங்கே தான் பிள்ளை லோகசிரியரின் பரமபதம் அமைந்துள்ளது. ஆனால் காரைக்குடியில் பிள்ளை இறந்ததாக கூறப்பட்டிருக்கும்.
2. 1314ல் ஹொய்சளர்க்கும், அலாவுதீன் உதாவ்ஜிக்கும் ஏற்பட்ட போர் முக்கியமான ஒன்றாக சொல்லபட்டிருக்கும். ஆனால் அந்த போர் நடந்ததோ 1342ல். இது அநேகமா எழுத்து பிழையாக தான் இருக்கவேண்டும்.
