Literally crying because this series is over and ugh it was so just good

Meet Alex: Badass mercenary and adrenaline junkie by fighting monsters for the very government that considers HER power a monster...oh the irony
“Alex thought it seemed awfully nonchalant of her to grab a snack while the city was in peril, but a girl had to eat.”

description

This book is a hidden gem that I was surprised more people hadn’t heard of it. Admittedly, it did have some cliches I mean for crying out loud the assassin is named Slayer BUT IT IS SO MUCH MORE OKAY I AM NOT OKAY, YOU WILL NOT BE OKAY AND CHRIST I’M A MESS

descriptiondescription

World building was typical- classic mages, vampires, and fairies practically run the city. PLOT TWIST was that hybrids were totally normalized. Most books are very all vampires vs all fairies keep them separate but here? Here we get a goddamn vampire elf!!

Classic supporting friend Marek with his crisp british accent, black hair, leather jacket and absolutely friend-zoned within the first five seconds...it was hilarious..

His character was a welcome addition as he was higher in the magical food chain than Alex so he had the insight tip.... Plus he was sassy AF
“When humans stop running into the middle of mage duels to capture video clips for their Youtube streams—or collecting debris from the battlefield for their junk collections—then I’ll stop being hard on them.”

description

And now my heart... Logan
A stubborn woman and a demented assassin..young love how I envy you
“Uh, yes.” She chewed on her lip. “I’ve found myself a…partner.”
The assassin winked at her.
She stuck her tongue out at him. “Someone to work with me in the investigation.”
“Who?”
“Slayer.”
“The assassin?” Low chuckles rumbled from the other end of the line. “I thought you two hated each other.”

description

There are few things i love more than rivals being forced to work together the ANGER, the DRAMA, the BANTER, the FIGHTING w/ each other WHILE FIGHTING OTHER PEOPLE its just fucking glorious.

Teamed up with an unlikely partner who are forced to work together long enough to solve the case and pretend there is no attraction whatsoever. Classic.

I loved that both characters were crazy in their own way and just as dark and dangerous as each other! They had their demons and werre spectacularly funny in a twisted way. And when the mercenary starts arguing with the assassin about who is more moral i almost died laughing it was
“Come now. Don’t be moody.”
“Moody?” she spat back his words. “I was poisoned—”
“Which wasn’t my fault.”
“—and then I woke up in a dungeon tied down with chains. I have every right to be moody”

description

I’ll be perfectly honest I enjoyed this series wayy more than I should’ve of. The plot was engaging with a clear purpose and sense of directions, sprinkled with a couple of twists to keep you on edge. It was truly the characters themselves had such an amazing dynamic that made you keep reading.

Alex fighting with Logan while working for Gaelyn who also hired Marek whose former lover gets involved and it was just fucking hilarious.
Every scene served a purpose whether fighting or character development. There were layers to each character

Logan isn’t just an assassin and Alex is more than a psycho with a sword

Magic Edge is book one in the Dragon Born Alexandria series by Ella Summers. Now I am trying to read the series in order with all the other Dragon Born world books.

This book reminded me of the Hidden Legacy series; because of all the magic and we had this one scene that was similar to the chained up scene in Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews. Is this series as good as Andrews, no, but it was still entertaining.

We get assassins, hate groups, magic orb’s with apocalyptic tendencies, and lots of action.

Alex is Serafina’s sister. She’s headstrong, reckless, and confident. She’s a bad ass, dragon born and hides her magic. Then we have Logan an assassin. When we meet him he’s a mystery and you wonder about him throughout the story. When the author reveals something big about him it’s a surprise and an interesting twist.

We do get a few secondary characters. I enjoyed them. One character was Marek who is Alex’s friend and bit of comic relief. He doesn’t know what she is, but that doesn’t stop her from making friends.

The hate group, the Convictionites, are a cult of humans who have known about magic and it’s creatures. They seek to destroy that world and to do so they use magic even though they hate it.

Logan and Alex are rivals forced to work together. They are attracted to each other right way and it’s a very strong attraction. Their is lots of sexual tension between them and their first kiss is HAWT. Both are a little crazy and have their own demons, but they kinda complement each other.

Magic Edge was an ok read. It’s a fun fluff with a magic edge. It’s fast-paced and full of action.

Rated: 3 Stars

You do need to read the Dragon Born series in order:
Mercenary Magic (Dragon Born Serafina, Book 1)
Magic Edge (Dragon Born Alexandria, Book 1)
Magic Games (Dragon Born Serafina, Book 2)
Magic Nights (Dragon Born Serafina, Book 3)
Blood Magic (Dragon Born Alexandria, Book 2)
Magic Kingdom (Dragon Born Alexandria, Book 3)
Fairy Magic (Dragon Born Awakening, Book 1)
Rival Magic (Dragon Born Serafina, Book 4)
Shadow World: A Dragon Born Trilogy
Spirit Magic (Dragon Born Awakening, Book 2)
Magic Immortal (Dragon Born Awakening, Book 3)
Shadow Magic (Dragon Born Alexandria, Book 4)

Abandoned at 30%. This feels like it was written by someone with no life experience who cut and chopped from other books in this genre and tried to fill in the gaps with cliche and cheesy imaginings of what someone badass would say and do.

Some of the 90s jargon used that's just cringeworthy today: stoked, bozos, phooey, hotshot. Nicknames like doll, princess, and sweetheart, oh and the male assassin's nickname is Slayer. Slayer. This just screams floor-length leather coat, doc martins, acne riddled pasty pale skin, and greasy hair to me.

The ~sexual tension/banter/romance~ is awful.
"I'm going to have to do yoga for at least an hour when I get home tonight." His eyes lit up "can I watch?"
"No, you may not."
"Participate?"
***
He smelled sexy enough to eat
***
He whispered into her ear "you're attracted to me, Alex. Just admit it." As he pulled away his check brushed against hers.
"Attracted to you? Puh-lease! I will admit no such thing."
"Stubborn woman."
"Demented assassin."
***
Alex nearly blushed-until she remembered that she wasn't attracted to him. Not at all. At least not most of the time. Well, maybe only occasionally. Ok, fine, if sex had a face, he would be it.

So witty, so quirky :|

This genre is so flooded with recycled storylines and characters, it's hard to find a decently written one these days. And this is a shining example of what to stay away from.

Well, this was kinda boring and meh.

I couldn't get into the story, although I tried. I had hoped, but oh well.

The biggest issue was the writing style, but maybe it's just me, there are some good reviews as well.

Good luck!

This book rates on the low end of the 2.5 star scale for me. We follow Alex, a heroine who is full of herself, who chases any supernatural baddie. The entire story you get a reminder that not only is she a bad ass, she is a dragon born and has to hide her magic. So what does she do at the first sign of trouble while she's by herself? Use her magic with witnesses. Rinse and repeat. I'm going to be honest, I wanted to stop reading at 30%. I wasn't loving anything about the book. The only interesting thing I found in this book was how the MC broke magic.
What kept it from a higher rating: I disliked all the characters. I also hated that the main character was this hot, awesome thing to everyone around her, but to me, she was no one notable. All characters were flat. I could skim paragraphs loosely and still not miss anything important.
What kept it from a lower rating: It was well edited.

This story begins when Alex must help find some magical orbs before the enemies of the supernaturals use it to destroy magic in the world. She must figure out what’s really going on and who’s in charge before it is too late. And with the help of an assassin things may turn out in her favor if she doesn’t get herself killed that is.

This book was a good start to this series. It was very intriguing and had a lot of action, and some romance as well.
I enjoyed the heroine a lot, and I thought she was pretty fierce and had a great sarcastic personality.
I look forward to reading more in this series.

Yeck. I read Serafina first and really liked her books1&2 and then switched over to read about her twin. Unlike Sera who's character acts legitimately terrified of being discovered and does everything to avoid using magic or be discovered, Alex is a flashy magic using dipshit. Arrogant and unlikeable she is. I stuck it out only because-well actually I don't know why. Hm. Slayer is lame as hell and there was zero, ZERO tension/chemistry between them. I was really flummoxed by this after Sera and Kai. Bummer. I'm not reading anymore Alex stories.

Fast paced with a lot of action

I had to backtrack as I started reading Sera’s books first. However, I am enjoying seeing how Alex’s story interweaves with what happened in San Francisco with Sera and Kai.

Alex is a mercenary who works to keep the supernatural being in line and protecting the humans. Currently she’s in Zurich working for a mage protecting the city when what should be routine turns into her getting bit by a vampire hybrid that causes those around her to question what she really is because a human would have turned. Alex has a deep dark secret she has magic but she’s spent her whole life keeping it buried deep inside. Alex comes from a long line of dragon born which have been hunted to extinction at least thought to be.

Alex is working on a case to find three magical orbs before they can be stolen and united to create a way to remove all magic. She unexpectedly teams up with Logan known as Slayer who is an assassin currently working in the area. Teamed up with an unlikely partner the pair work together to find the orbs but neither one can deny the attraction to each other. Can Alex keep it together long enough to solve the case or will her in magic come out and change everything? What about her feelings for Logan?

I like Alex she’s a kick ass monster hunter who isn’t afraid to change down a group of hybrid vampires. I’m curious to see where her dragon born future will lead her now that she’s started to learn what she can do. I wasn’t sure about Logan but he’s grown on me through he book and clearly they have some kind of steamy connection. I’m curious to see how things are going to work out in their future.

I’ve had this one on my kindle for far longer than I would like to admit. I love the green cover it was calling my name from the moment I first saw it. While Magic Edge is a spin off of another series you don’t have to read the prior to enjoy Alex’s story. Magic’s Edge is set in a urban fantasy world where the humans live among the super natural beings. I love the concept it’s a unique spin on the urban fantasy world with an exciting story. I love the characters I felt I was really able to connect with Alex she’s just one of those characters you can connect with. I really like the chemistry between Alex and Logan it really works. This is my first novel by the author but I’m a quick fan I love her story telling the book just flows it’s hard to put down. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next books.

I might be biased, but I liked Sera's POV better, she at least made a better attempt at hiding her magic. I am honestly confused about how these twins have kept their magic a secret for so long because Alex was just using it needlessly in this book. I liked Logan as the main love interest, but wished I actually got to see him doing assassiny things. Honestly it felt like not a lot happened and most of this book was just back and forth banter between Alex and Logan, I'd like to see a bit more substance to the storyline.
Overall:
Plot: 2.5 stars
Characters: 3 stars
World building: 3 stars

Lots of similarities

I read a couple of books about Alex's sister before I read this and I like Alex just as much as her sister. They really do feel like twins. They both are falling for rich men too, but with some interesting differences, one of which is that Logan is an assassin called Slayer. I like that I am seeing both stories and getting a better picture in my head of what is happening.

I enjoyed this.

I managed to keep up with the plot even though the vampire elves threw me off a little at the beginning. The romantic thing she had going on with a certain asassin was also kinda entertaining. I'm interesting in following both of these and I'm off to borrow book 2.

I enjoyed this! It was a action packed easy read with lots of magic and dragon references, which is exactly what I needed right now. I will continue the series. UPDATE: wow I read the other reviews and you all are such haters! This book is just supposed to be fun fluff with a magic edge (haha) and I think some people expect too much. Sure, gave it 3 stars......because ONLY my absolute favorites Yasmine Galenorn, Jaye Wells and PC Cast get 5 stars....: I still enjoyed this book and got what I wanted out of it - to wind down from my stressful day of motherhood

Yummy!

Ella Summers knows how to get your pulse up and your imagination going. I get so lost in the fantasy that I can see the story. Summers weaves a tale that is both beautiful and mesmerizing. When the day gets overwhelming, I pick up her book and get lost in the tale that is spellbinding. I enjoyed Alex as much as Sera and I can't wait for the next book!

I love this intertwined series; however the constant (multiple times per page, if not paragraph) mention of assassins and smart-mouthed mercenaries just did my head in! We get it already! Alex is a bad ass mercenary and Logan is an assassin - it doesn't need to be discussed during every conversation! Ugh. Could've been so much better with some tighter editing.

OK, so i bought Magic Edge literally straight after i finished Mercenary Magic, because i needed to read more about this world that Ella Summers is writing.
For those who don't know, Magic Edge is the first book in the Dragon Born Alexandria series, however it fits into a larger story, where this book is infact book 2.

Magic Edge follows Alexandria, the twin sister of Sera. Both these sisters are dragon born, a breed of Mage that is killed upon birth. That being said, Sera and Alexandria survived and have managed to go along life in the magic world, pretending to be human. However a work trip to Zurich is fast becoming the event to unravel years of hiding.

Alex is a mercenary too, killing magical creatures and beings that break the law or are just evil things in general. A bad day turns worse when Alex find herself in not one but 3 fights in a 24 hour period, each one ending in a worse situation. However, fight number two brings her closer and closer with a fellow killer, the assassin known as 'Slayer'. Logan AKA Slayer and Alex have a someone complicated history, involving the near murder of one of them, but these two have so much chemistry it scream off the page.
These two twisted killers team up against a bunch of purist nuts who hate all magic, who are intent on wiping the world of magic.

I think because i fell in love with Sera and Kai so much, that i found it a little harder to connect with Alex and Logan. Thats not to say i didnt love the characters or the story, because i did.
I love that they were both equally as crazy and dark as each other, they both had their demons and they both are just spectacularly funny in a twisted sort of way.

I cannot wait to see how this story joins up with the larger series. What did come as a shock was some of the revelations revealed in this book regarding the Dragon Born, it was really really interesting to see each bit of information revealed, knowing that only one half of the twin set understands.

Cannot wait to read book 3! Which is actually book 2 in the Serafia series!

Wowza this is bad. The FMC is incompetent. She's described as this badass supernatural vigilante, but by the end of chapter 4, she's almost died twice. BOTH times, she needed to be saved by a man (who of course proceeded to chastise her for behaving recklessly), only for her to then respond like a child who needs supervision, trying to argue that her predicament was not her fault (it absolutely was). Like. Why would you waltz into a supernaturals bar and tell everyone that you're a supernatural vigilante?? When you KNOW they all hate you?? Why would you drink something you didn't watch the sketchy bartender make?? When you KNOW he's lying and being super suspicious??

The dialogue is brutal to get through. She talks like a middle school mean girl, and her inner monologue is just as bad. "Attracted to you? Puh-lease! I will admit no such thing." <--that's supposed to be flirting/snarky banter. Her interactions with the MMC are just her bullying him (again, like a child), and him shamelessly flirting with her. I really just do not like the writing style. Even ignoring the dialogue issues, it's so clunky. Every other line is just "Alex does this" and "Alex feels that." All telling, no showing. ALSO, why was she turned on when he said he "thoroughly checked her" WHILE SHE WAS UNCONSCIOUS??? The thought of a man you (apparently) hate feeling up your unconscious body turns you on. Great. Lovely. What a great message to send to people.

It's a bummer because the concept is cool, but like wow the FMC is insufferable.

Good

**Warning! Cliffhanger!**
Although this is the first book in Alexandria’s series, the author recommends reading it after her sister Serafina’s first book. They are interconnected, but separate stories though, and can be read separately if you prefer.

Alexandria is in Zurich, away from her twin and their brother, and making decent money fighting supernatural monster for Galen, the oldest immortal.
When she comes across a plot to steal magical artifacts, she teams up with the assassin, Logan. Together they work to find the perpetrators, and along the way they discover secrets and plots that might just get them killed.

While the initial story arc is wound up in this book, it does end on a bit of a book hook cliffhanger, which sets up the subsequent book’s story arc.

Like Serafina’s story, this is an action packed, magic filled urban fantasy. The world is set in an alternate universe where magic exists and supernatural beings live with humans knowing everything. Building a bit on Sera’s world, we learn a bit more about the dragon born, and about both Sera and Alex’s abilities.
It’s an engaging world, that keeps the reader’s interest and draws you in to want to read more.

An enjoyable urban fantasy for fans of the genre.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)

How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see 3* differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
------------

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

I read books 1 & 2 of Sera's series - and loved them. She made sense as a character and she and Kai had major heat. Alex's story in comparison is just kind of stupid - her reason for being in Zurich makes little sense to begin with - then we have this whole Paranormal vigilante / Black Plague crap - sorry, threw up a little in my mouth at how trite all the labels assigned to Alex were. Then almost gave myself eyestrain rolling my eyes at 'Slayer'. Seriously? Slayer?
These two had no chemistry, none. Alex is thoughtless and gungho, shallow as a puddle and irritating to boot. Logan might be this great assassin but he gets shot, hurt, an awful lot considering he's supposed to be all that.
They seem to be running around in circles looking for these orbs, getting in constant fights, and swapping inane banter along the way - rinse repeat, rinse repeat, excuse me whilst I yawn.

No more Alex for me, and now this book has me questioning whether book 3 of Sera is worth my time.

Guild Mayhem mercenary Alexandra, one twin of forbidden Dragon Born sisters, is in Europe working for the legendary mage Gaelyn hunting down misbehaving supernaturals. But she’s having a hard time keeping him and her partner Marek, a first-tier mage summoner from figuring out she’s not human.

When Marek leaves on a trip, Alex is forced into a temporary alliance with an assassin named Logan as they search for who’s put out a reward for the Orbs of Essence before they can use them to wipeout the supernatural populations. Unfortunately, she’s unable to hide who she is from him.

Fave scenes: Madame Meringue’s, visiting the pixie, Alex inviting Logan inside her place and Alex talking to her other half.

3.5 stars-- This book was pretty good. I think I might've enjoyed it more if I hadn't already read the Sera series first... I just love the characters from that Dragon Born series, and although I liked these characters, I didn't love them like Sera, Kai, Riley, Naomi, and the commandos. I'm still going to continue on with the books though. Maybe Alex will grow on me a bit more, and to be fair, this was just the first book for these characters. I do really like this author and her writing style. The world she has created is extremely unique and her writing draws you in with its action and fast pace.

At first I thought Alex was REALLY similar to her twin, Sera, and wasn't that into the book. But then, things started happening and I realised, that yeah, they're both brave and powerful, but are different in some ways. Alex is definitely more 'reckless' as the author likes to remind us, and she usually acts before she thinks, unlike Sera, who is a little more sensible. Alex is just as sarcastic and snarky as Sera, but also a little more quirky, and all of her conversations with 'Slayer' are just hilarious- Alex's logic is a bit.... illogical.

Overall, the book was great and I can't wait to read the next one!

Love these series.

I love that the dragon born sister series can be read seperatley, together...They intertwine and are beautifully written. My favorite part of the series is Alex and her willful attitude. Her sister Sera and her have similar personalities, but different enough to see the differences. I may have just not seen it as much in this one because Logan is more low key, but I didn't get a very clear idea of what he looks like. My view may also be tinted because Sera's Dragon, Kai, is described many times. Either way it is a series worth reading. Great start.

Very good start to series

I read Serafina's book 1 first as suggested but it isn't required you can follow along fine. Reading this intertwined sisters series in reading order provides more depth to everything happening in the magic world. Alex isn't with her sister and brother which makes me nervous for her. Alex takes a lot of chances with her life. Logan learns a truth that shatters his world and how he feels about himself. There are so many people in Alex's life that I am worried that she'll be betrayed.

Magic Edge is a great introduction into Alex's life. Like her sister, Sera, Alex hides her magic, pretending to be a human mercenary to avoid the death sentence associated with being Dragon Born. But can Alex set aside her pride long enough to work with the assassin, Logan? The characters are well developed and endearing. The storyline is fast-paced and unique, filled with danger, intrigue and potential romance. The world-building is wonderful. I can't wait to see what the rest of the series brings!

3.5

This novel is set inside the entire Dragon Born collection and needs to be read as such. Though it’s the first one in Alex’s journey, if you haven’t read Seraphin’s first installment, you should stop and read that first. There is so much info there that is required fir true understanding here, since this author actually respects her readers and doesn’t rehash unnecessarily. That said, this is only a 3.5 from me as it is not as strong as some of her other works, and far too short.

Undeleted story idea

I had to go back and reread the first 20% of the book after double- and triple-checking that this was the first book in the series. It reads like it should be book 2 considering the author jumps into the story mid-stream as if readers are already familiar with the setting and characters. Otherwise, I liked Alex, but really didn’t care one way or the other about Logan and certainly didn’t know or care the difference between him, Holt, or Marek. If anything, it seemed like author might be introducing the harem for an RH/why choose trope.
