‘We would blow up this world and create something beautiful in its ruins’
Jesse & Laney 1985

We were each survivors of our upbringing: lost, unloved and afraid. But like moths to a flame, we couldn’t stay apart.
We loved.
We lost.
We fought.
We cried.
And then we shattered each other’s hearts.
Jesse was a hard man: a biker outlaw for the Devil’s Highwaymen MC. I was Laney: the daughter of a dead mother and a father that didn’t know or want me.
We were doomed right from the start.
But this was our romance.
And this was our disaster.
And hopefully, this would be our second chance.

1 I AM SO PISSED Star

I’m a huge fan of MC books. I like intense reads. The grittier the better.

After several days of searching, I finally, finally found a book that sucked me in right from the start. The writing was good and I easily connected with the story and the characters. It was angsty as hell but I’m an angst addict so I was happy.

And then everything went to shit.

And no matter what happens next, nothing will ever be the same. I’m sorry.

"We were both human, and we both made mistakes, but our mistakes were what made us and what defined us as people."
description

Ride or Die is the first book in A Devil's Highwaymen MC Series. An MC Romance full of angst, heartbreak, raw fury, and grit, Claire C. Riley offers a new riveted creation with complex characters, action, and a story with a beautifully broken second chance romance.

description
"I fucked up real bad."
Jesse and Laney are both individuals who have overcome a great deal of strife in their lives. Both children of Devil's Highwaymen, they have experienced trauma and abuse and both witnessed violence and debauchery as part of a daily life occurrence. Jesse is destined to follow in his father's footsteps by becoming a Devil himself. Despite her undeniable attraction to Jesse and the club life, Laney's dad is doing all he can to keep her isolated and protected from the biker world. However, Laney and Jesse have always shared a special connection, and when the time comes for Laney to become his old lady, Jesse will do whatever it takes to secure her place by his side.

description
"Family didn't have to be made from blood; it was made from love and loyalty, and those people had that in abundance."
Jesse and Laney have much to overcome. Although they are madly in love with each other, Jesse is a Devil and as difficulties in the club continue to mount, and heartbreak takes its toll, he finds himself making mistakes that could cost him not only Laney but also his life.

description
"Jesse was claiming me once more."
Told in dual POV, Ride or Die is a heartbreaking raw romance that is told through both the past and the present. The story documents the romance of Jesse and Laney in a manner that causes the reader to experience the tension of the time passing. In addition to the central conflict, that is unveiled at the very beginning of the book, the drama and scandal that takes place in the club make the stakes high for Jesse to overcome and conquer his enemies, and all while keeping his girl by his side. I found the plot to be complicated with all of the unique twists and turns that existed throughout. Although I felt compassion for both Jesse and Laney, I struggled with some of the choices they both made and the circumstances in which they lived. I have always been a huge fan of the MC Romance genre, and I certainly feel that Claire delivered a raw and gritty romance that will certainly appeal to readers who enjoy a heavy hand of angst and pain with their action and passion.

description

Overall, I highly recommend Ride or Die to readers who enjoy a tragic second chance romance with a demanding alpha hero that lives in a dark and twisted MC world. After reading several of Claire C. Riley books, it is abundantly clear that she is one talented author who creates the most fantastical worlds full of twist and turns that you will not want to miss!

Genre:  Contemporary Romance
Type: Book 1 of A Devil's Highwaymen MC Series
POV: First Person – Dual

 giphy (19).gif

Jesse Hardy was the son of the President of the Devil's highwaymen MC.  After the death of his mother, he and his brother Butch had no choice but to live with their father.  They easily adjusted to their new life in the club. He always felt like his father didn't liked him but he never cared because he had his brother, the only true blood family he ever needed.

"Always was just like forever: a vicious lie upon an angel's lips. Always died just like everything and everyone else. Always was never forever."

Laney was the daughter of one of the MC members (Gauge). The relationship she had with her father was not a loving one.  She only was there because she had no choice.  Once she turned eighteen she was bound to leave and find her own way.  However; she didn't realized that she would fall hard for Jesse.

"It was Jesse, I realized. He calmed me - my soul. He made me feel safe, and like I belonged. And for the first time since moving there, I realized that I wasn't homesick and I didn't feel lonely."

The story goes back and forth from the present time and and to the past.  Jesse and Laney found a connection the minute they met.  However; it took a little while before they really took advantage of the connection and things they were feeling for each other.  They both knew that Gauge wasn't going to like their relationship but Jesse stood up for what he wanted and I loved how he confronted Gage. Laney had no doubt in her mind that Jesse was made for her.

"He seemed just as broken and lost as me. And I wondered if we would fit together like a jigsaw if we tried."

I must say I really like this book right from the beginning; I immediately felt for Jesse and his lost for his mother.  If you know me, you know I like pain; the more it hurts the better.  However; I found myself conflicted with Jesse and Laney's relationship in the first half of the book.  The lack of history made it hard for me to connect with them right away.  It wasn't until after half of the book when I finally started to click more with them.  I somehow wished that the book would have started with the past first like how they meet and then the last half to be written in the present time. Somehow the connection and emotions were hard to feel when you don't know much about them to begin with.  The second half of the book was so much better for me; with more MC troubles and the internal battle Jesse was feeling along with a twisted plot; I felt more attached to the story and the characters.
"Laney was mine, and I would spend the rest of my life making her see that."

Image result for gif kiss your mine charlie sons of anarchy

Overall; I liked how this book ended.  The author was able to write a story where everything made sense and brought a really well written story about family, love and fighting for what you believe in.  This new work from Claire is lighter than what I'm used to, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Readers who enjoy second change romance and stories with action will find this book appealing.

The only thing worse than a cheater is a doormat heroine who'll let's cheater finger her AFTER confronting him for cheating, has friends who tell the Hero he needs to talk to her and make things better KNOWING that he cheated (because a cheater is exactly who you want a friend to be with), watches the Hero beat up a guy she was talking to, and then takes him back with out him EVER begging or really apologizing....fml. Why can't authors write a strong heroine and a Hero who gets what he really deserves...

The hero is very full of issues and our heroine deserved better.

“Don’t go, Jesse. Stay with me, please,” she said between kisses across my shoulders. “I don’t know why you’re doing this to us, but please stop. There’s only so much I can take before you break us.”

The whole place reeked of sweat, stale beer, and pussy, and I fuckin’ loved it, immediately feeling myself loosen up.

I didn’t even use a fucking condom.

I slid myself out of Natasha and put myself away before buckling my jeans back up. She stood up and picked her panties up off the ground, quickly assessing that they’d been ruined, and she threw them in the trash. Then she turned to me with a lipstick-smeared mouth and smiled.

“I got something,” I replied. “Probably fucking chlamydia!” he laughed.

my dick was still dripping with Natasha, and I felt a shame so bad that my stomach hurt.

I promised her I’d never cheat on her, yet that was how far I’d sunk. That was where I’d had to go to get her to hate me.

who wants to make some dirty skank their property when she’s been through all their brothers?

“If it helps, it meant nothing to me,” I said after several moments of total silence from her.

He's handing out advice when, at the beginning of the story, he had sex with a stranger without a condom. And then he had sex with the heroine. Disgusting. But remember to cover up before you blow your load, because bitches like that are always looking for a free ride.”

He is not trustworthy. You should always use a condom with him. Just Saying! “Condom,” I breathed out. “Want you bareback, babe,” he grunted, sliding in a little bit more.

I am a huge fan of Claire's writing, and was really looking forward to this biker/MC romance book. This is one of my favorite genres and it isn't easy for authors to come up with new story lines that feel refreshing. I was hooked on this story the first half of the book. I really liked the Jesse and Laney, and couldn't wait to read how their relationship would develop. These two meet when they are teenagers, and there is a click right away. Throughout the book we learn more about their relationship, which I really liked.

However, after I was halfway done, I couldn't really get into the constant switch between present and past. In some books this works really well, but in this book it made it difficult for me to connect with the characters. I was hoping for a strong second chance romance, nevertheless it fell a bit flat for me. The reason why Jesse and Laney split up would've had a stronger impact if it happened somewhere else in the story. For me the biggest problem I had with this book was the structure. It didn't have a great flow, which made it really hard for me to get into the story. I enjoyed learning more about the ins and outs of the MC, and the suspense element was done really well. However, for me this wasn't a complete story. We got a lot of Jesse and Laney's relationship in the past time but just a little bit of in the present. I wanted to read about their love in present time. It was just rushed and that is one of the reasons I couldn't rate it higher than three stars. I will pick up the next book to see where Claire is planning on taking this story.

4.5 stars for me.
First time author for me and I will definitely be reading the next one in this series. I like the author's writing style and the editing was good.
Jesse and Laney are both products of a very dysfunctional upbringing and both children of MC members. They initially meet when they are young teenagers and their relationship gradually builds over time. It's not insta-lust or love. But the love that develops is very deep. Jesse doesn't know the love of a father, rather he knows only hatred shown to him by his father, the MC president. He and his big brother, Butch, are taken to the clubhouse to live when they are young after their mother dies of an overdose. Laney shows up when she's 14 after her mother, a prostitute dies and her father, the SAA of the club, takes her in. My heart broke for both Jesse and Laney but they do get a HEA. Yes, Jesse cheats but to clearly understand his mindset you have to read the story. If you have a hard trigger on cheating then the book may not be for you. Jesse, at times, was an anti-hero to me. He could be a definite ahole but deep down I could feel the good that was there. This one is not a lite read. The secondary characters engaged me and I look forward to reading their stories.
The book goes from past to present intermittently during the book and usually that throws me off track, but this author did an excellent job of weaving the two together and giving me a sense of suspense as the story unfolded.

This book has my head done in! See, I had huge issues with the characters, more so Jesse. He was like a petulant, spoiled brat on 'roids. Seriously, I kid you not! I despised the way he let his revolting violence maim and destroy people - it was gratuitous and at times way too OTT. I more than despised the way he went about getting Laney to leave him because he didn't have the balls to finish it with her like an adult.

Then we come to Laney. Laney, Laney, Laney ..... sigh. The author tried so hard to make this girl (16 I think when we first meet her) a hard, aggressive, foul mouthed biker bitch and given she didn't grow up with bikers it so didn't work. Then this kid morphs into this doormat that lets Jesse treat her like absolute shit, and welcomes him back with open arms without making him do so on his knees. Give me strength! This needed a huge grovel, HUGE!

In spite of all these issues I had, I could not put the book down. Told in past and present tense I really liked the way the author drove the story forward, and although I sort of guessed the plot twists I sure did enjoy the ride and will definitely be reading Harlow's book due out in a few months.

So, 4 stars for a book that kept me engaged right the way through, which is great seeing as I've started and stopped more books this past couple of months than I have in my life #seriousbookfunk

This is a new to me author and figured I'd give it a shot since I love MC stories. This was good and nothing over the top. There were some twists that surprised me which I really enjoyed, but I think the H/h chemistry needed a little more. I wasn't truly sold with it really. Plus this could've used a little more editing as well. Overall though, pretty good.

4.5 STARS Review to come

I really enjoyed Jesse & Laney story.
I really liked Laney they are survivors of their upbringing. Laney you can’t help but love, her mother is dead and her father that didn’t know about her or want her.. I just really felt for Laney.
Jesse is a alpha male who annoyed me at times he is a biker and a hard man. He keeps pushing Laney away.. I understood why he was doing it the more you get into the book but...,.
Together they are hot but together there relationship is doomed from the start. Will they get a second chance at love you will have to read to find out.
I loved that we was told the story from past and present.. you really get to know the back story of the characters and understand them them more.
Really liked other characters. Some others not so much. I didn’t see the twist at the end coming.. there is enough going on to keep you turning the page to find out what is going to happen next and to see if Laney and Jessie get their HEA.. do they I am not going to say.

The book is well written.
Bring on book 2!

If you can't tell by my shelves, I didn't like this. No grovel and one kiss and ~ poof ~ she's his again. "Everyone makes mistakes, oh well. He took off 18 layers of my skin and I might have a std ~ but I luurrvvee him." (Giggles softly). GAG. If you've read my reviews before, you know I love a good cheating hero story, but I've got to feel the heroines heartbreak, feel the redemption of the hero, but that's missing here. I'm putting it down to the author lacking the skills and then I'm forgetting this book exists.

Gave up sorry

The way the book started pulled me right in, then it went to crap real quick.

I didn't mind the cheating just to put that out there. No it was the jumping around to the last constantly which I didn't see necessary. Read a couple of the jumps back then started skipping them. Then it was 3 chapters in a row of the past that didn't have to do with anything. So I through my hands up and have up. Sorry not sorry.

I Voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book

What a hectic angst filled ride.
I think that this book wont be for everybody, but if you like MC books that are dirty/gritty and exactly what you expect a MC Book should be then this is for you

Jesse and Laney are people who had so many messed up things happen in their lives, and its a wonder that they had so many obsticles in their way.

But they can't deny their connection and their need for a happily ever after. Jesse will do everything in his power to make Laney his ol lady.

But with two people who had messed up lives, things are not easy and they make mistakes and some mistakes might be too much to overcome

Like I said some things in this book might not be for everybody so read with caution.

This was my first read by Cee Cee but definitely won't be my last. I love a gritty MC read, in actual fact the dirtier the better, and Ride or Die didn't disappoint.
Jesse was a hard man. His childhood and upbringing made sure of this. The love he has for his brother butch and his mc family is very well established in the book, but what he didn't expect was beautiful Laney.
Jesse sees Laney is struggling, and senses something in her that he needs to fix. At first he fights this, but overtime these two characters grow together in the most beautiful way. Don't get me wrong, their journey isn't easy, and at times it downright ugly but this life was never meant to be easy & even with everything life throws at these two they always come back to each other. Can't wait to see where this series goes.

Claire is a new author to me and one I have fallen in love with and become addictive of her writing style. MC romances are my favourite Genre at the moment and the Devil's Highway Men MC has just become on of my favourites.

I loved how this book went back and forth between the present and the past so we could see what happened and had lead them to the point they are now at. reading how Laney and Jesse's relationship developed and then imploded was quite the journey, my heart broke for both of them, and whilst I wanted to slap Jesse upside his head and shake sense into him, I also wanted to hug him. Whilst I did love the present/past back and forth I do wish I had seen more of the present.

The chemistry between Laney and Jesse is hot and the sexual tension between them is scorching off the charts. I loved the relationships Jesse had between his brothers Dom, Rider and especially Casa.

Can't wait to see what happens next in the series! Is it autumn yet??????

I am voluntarily reviewing a book gifted to me by the author with no obligation.
Ride or Die #1 is the first book in the A Devil’s Highwaymen MC novel series by Claire C Riley. I have to say that Mrs. Riley is a new author for me but she has captured my attention with this very well written story. This is not a sweet biker story...it is gritty and rough, and hard to read at times, but with an outstanding ending!!! I really enjoyed Jesse & Laney story. I am a huge fan of biker/MC romance books and let me tell you that this novel doesn't disappoint. If dirty mouthed bikers and second-chance romance is your thing, this is for you!

As always Claire has pulled out another brilliant story. It's dark, compelling, brutal and passionate. The characters are well written and I think most will find the ending very "Claire-esqu". Claire is a author who definitely deserves a wider audience. You're missing out if you haven't picked up one of her books. Get reading, guys!!

This was a good story that I enjoyed reading. I liked how the book was written showing both past and present events, constantly switching between the two. I thought it gave the book a good pace.

There was something about this story, not sure what it was though, that prevented me from feeling as though I could really connect to the characters.

When I started reading this book, I didn't realise that the storyline involved cheating. As long as I am not fully invested into characters' relationships, its not a topic that usually bothers me in books. It happens fairly early on it the story and as I hadn't connected to these characters, I wasn't fazed too much by it.

I though it was a decent start to this series and I would read more from this author in the future

A new to me author, I have to say that Claire C Riley has thoroughly captured my attention with this first in the Devil's Highwaymen series. Ride or Die is raw and honest and what I expect from an MC book. She doesn't hold back and every single dirty aspect of Club life is there for the taking.

The crazy ride that is Jesse and Layla is told in both present and past. We get to see the first moments of their meeting, subsequent brief encounters that are full of an innocent flirtation and the gutsy way Jesse finally made Layla his. There is a ton of bad blood surrounding Jesse's father, the club Prez, in addition to the hands-off policy Layla's father has with his only daughter. Two headstrong offspring who shouldn't have anything to do with each other, yet can't seem to erase the other from their minds.

Overall, I really liked the characters and the dark nature of this story. However, at times I felt as if inner dialogue was repeated one time too often and I found myself skimming passages that didn't seem necessary to the book. But there is certain gritty quality that I enjoyed and the intricacies of the story held my interest. I look forward to more from this crew and won't hesitate to pick up the next in the series.

3.5 stars.

Enjoyable MC read

Dark, gritty, dangerous, death, revenge, mistakes are just some of the words I can use to describe this book, but it was the love story that spans years that grips the elder. Making this book one you can't put down. I look forward to the next in the series.

Like magnets, We kept colliding no matter how hard we tried to pull apart.

Ride or Die, as MC reads go was everything I would expect to find. Rude dirty mouthed crass bikers, sex and lots of it, club business and interesting characters.
Everything I love in an MC read was in Ride or Die with the added bonus of a teen to adult love story and twists and turns along the way.

The main characters are Laney and Jesse both thrown into the biker world without choice, kindred spirits both with mothers who had died and left with biker fathers who hadnt a clue about kids and didn't even know them but were left to pick up the pieces and drag them into their world.

Instant attraction for both Laney and Jesse when they first met and the story goes from past to present, the teenage years to three months earlier of the present then back to present.

The switch in past to present would normally bother me it may even put some readers off BUT hang fire!!.
I began to discover that Claire did a brilliant job writing it that way otherwise I would of been figuring things out myself as the plot progressed, so the switch taking you to Laney and Jesse's loved up beginning of a relationship and then to what Jesse was discovering in the present was a distraction that all came together in the end.

I liked it, the plot, the hotness, I got frustrated with Jesse but it added to the angst and I did like the main characters and the extended characters and I would definitely read more with them in this series.

I love MC for the bad boys you can't help but love and the sassy women with backbone and this had it.

This is my first book by this author and I am looking forward to the next one in the series.

Told in first person's pov, leads to hea. No heavy blood loss or gruesome scenes.

Available in KU.

Great!

The story of Jessie and Laney was a gritty and sad but very loving. It starts when they first met and years after but when they do get together there tragedy that Jessie can't get over and hurts her, but when Jessie learn the truth of the tragedy and the lies that puts the Club in trouble he and his brothers find out someone that they thought would turn on the Club. This story was gritty and had some action but I did not like going back in time for the couple but that is me, still a great story. I am going to read the next book, and will be recommend this book.
