About the author

David Levy is a prominent astronomer and author, most famous for his co-discovery in 1993 of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which collided with the planet Jupiter in 1994.

Levy was born in Canada, but now lives in Arizona. He has been involved with astronomy, as an observer, promoter, and author, for his entire adult life. Levy has discovered twenty two comets, given innumerable lectures, television appearances, and published articles in the major science and astronomy magazines.

He gained a Phd in English literature in 2010. There is an asteroid named in his honour, Levy 3673. He is married to Wendee Levy.

This was given to me as a gift when I was around 10 or 11. (I wanted to be an Astronomer when I grew up.) I spent countless hours in the bed of my dad's pickup with this book and a set of binoculars. Excellent gift book with helpful charts and beautiful illustrations.

We bought this book years ago when our children were homeschooling. The information is explained clearly, not dumbed down but also not too complicated. Obviously, since it was written in 1994 and the edition we have is from 2002, the data is outdated - Pluto was still a standard planet.
I also wonder about the technology, as the author references certain telescopes and binocular magnifications required. There must be better options today.
Outside of that, the historical information mixed with the myths and legends is well written. The star charts are very helpful well, though I am sure many of the photographs in more recent versions have been updated as the Hubble (and now the Webb) telescopes have improved over the years. this is a good reference for basic information.

Everything I know about identifying stars is from this book. You never know what you're looking at until you check this book out with a pair of binoculars on a crisp cool night.

A fantastic book if you are new to astronomy. Full of all the information you need to know about the planets, the sun, stars, galaxies, the history of astronomy and also a great set of sky maps with details of hundreds of objects which can be seen with the naked eye, binoculars and telescopes. I have been using this book for years..

I got this book when I was 14 and just looked at the pictures, and I was fascinated. I pulled this out of my bookcase as an adult and I’m even more thrilled by it now.

As basic introductions to astronomy go, this one’s not too bad. For the most part, it’s pretty simple stuff. Most astronomy-related topics are introduced, but few are developed in much detail. However, even folks who know a little more about the subject should find the copious illustrations interesting. Further, the topics are broken down into brief enough treatments that the book makes a nice bathroom read. Though I suspect that The Nature Company published this book and its companion volume at least in part to help spur telescope sales, it nonetheless proved to be a rewarding experience all by itself.

great beginning guide to observational techniques for the night sky, history of astronomy, and explanations of stars and galaxies. includes some, but not all, messier objects, the location inside the appropriate constellation, a brief history of the constellation's name, as well as matching instrument to magnitude. easy to understand, baby stepping you into the wonders of the universe.

C'est le livre avec lequel je suis allée regarder les étoiles pour la première fois, sur la butte de neige dans ma cours. J'avais peut-être 13, 14 ou 15 ans.
Sans cette idée qui m'est passée par la tête un jour : "tient, je vais prendre un livre d'astronomie à la biblio, et j'vais regarder desconstellations dehors !" Je serais pas sur le point de commencer un doctorat en astrophysique certain !

Un tanto antiguo, pero no ha cambiado nada. Qué grande es David Levy y cuánto sabe. Todos los libros que ha hecho han sido verdaderas maravillas, y este otro más. Un aperitivo de lo que fue 'Observar el Cielo'. Ojalá se animase a prodigarse más con su enorme saber.
