The author is best known for his common man cartoons, and hascreated cartoons os a world that even the ubiquitous common man is not privy to. Within a career span of 50+ years, i think a mention of date the cartoon would have provided a more comprehensive context to the current affairs (esp. for millennials atleast).

This is a collection of cartoons that RK Laxman drew outside the world of his famous pocket cartoon - You Said It. While several are from the sunday edition of the Times of India, during a period when RK Laxman was at his prolific best, there are some that have been taken from cartoons he drew for the monthly magazine, Science Today.
The cartoons themselves provide a rich mix of humour - the plain visual gag for instance, like the one where an eager-to-please father is trying to blow up a balloon, only to find himself floating in the air, and without much success with the balloon. Then there is a wry but cutting comment on man's futile attempt to tame nature where a person remarks with incredulity at a river's ever-changing course and man's attempt to bridge it.
The 187 cartoons in this book provide ample opportunity to indulge the zygomaticus major muscle and the dozen other muscles to varying degrees - smile, chuckle, guffaw, or the cliched ROFL.

জানি লেখকের আগের বইয়ের পাঠ প্রতিক্রিয়া লেখার সময় বলেছিলাম "The Uncommon Man" বইটার পাঠ প্রতিক্রিয়া নিয়ে আসবো, কিন্তু বই পারার অলিতে গলিতে ঘুরে বেড়ানোর সময় হঠাৎ একটি রাস্তার বইয়ের দোকানে যখন এই ছোট চটি বইয়ের প্রচ্ছদটা দেখলাম, তখন তার আঁকা ও লেখাটি দেখে আমার মুখে এমনি হাসি ফুটে এলো। আমার মন বলে ফেলল, "বাবা সারণ্য - ওই কফি টেবিল বইটা না হয় পরে পড়ে নিয়ো। আজ মন যখন ডাক দিয়েছে এই বইয়ের প্রতি, তাহলে নিয়েই ফেলো।
এবার বইয়ের মূল ভাবনাটার বিষয়ে আসা যাক, কি নেই এই দুই মলাটের মধ্যে? Satire, Slapstick, Absurdist Humour, Black Comedy etc. - হাস্যরসের মূল ধারা থেকে যত উপধারা আছে সব কিছুর সন্ধান আপনি এই বইয়ের মধ্যে পাবেন। অনেক ক্ষেত্রেই লক্ষণ বাবুর বিভিন্ন ভাবনা যেগুলো ৬০, ৭০, ৮০কি ৯০ এ দশকে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে সেগুলো আজও খুবই প্রাসঙ্গিক। আর্টিফিশিয়াল ইন্টেলিজেন্স, ভার্চুয়াল রিয়েলিটি, আমাদের প্রজন্মের মনোযোগীতার অভাব বা কর্মক্ষেত্রের পলিটিক্স - এইসব বিষয়েই যেন চিত্রে চিরন্তন হয়ে আছে লক্ষণ বাবুর তুলির রেখায়। তাই এই দূরদর্শিতায় পাঠক হিসেবে আমি যথেষ্ট মুগ্ধ।
কিন্তু যেমন একটি কয়েনের দুটি সাইড থাকে বা দিক থাকে - এই বইয়ের ক্ষেত্রেও আমার কিছু অভিযোগ রইল। প্রথমে আসা যাক লক্ষণ বাবুর আকার সময়কাল বা প্রকাশকালের কোন উল্লেখ নেই। যার ফলে বিভিন্ন জোকের কন্টেক্সট এর অভাব বোধ করা যায়। কিছু কিছু সময় কিছু জোকস খুবই রিপিটেটিভ হয়ে যায়, তার উপর এই পাঠক এটাও বুঝতে পারে - যে লক্ষণ বাবুর রাজনৈতিক ও সামাজিক প্রেক্ষাপট নিয়ে যখন উনি ওনার হাস্যরসের প্রতিভা খুবই সুন্দরভাবে প্রকাশ করতে পারেন - ওনার সুররিয়ালিস্ট বা Absurdist কমেডির হাত - leaves a lot to be desired - because at times it becomes a little too on your nose. It becomes glaringly obvious when I flip through the pages of this book...

This is the book where your imaginations on every situation presented in the book would get failed and brings a small smile on your face when you read the description given by the author and reminds you that no other author can be as sarcastic as Laxman's sir. I've always been a fan of R.K Laxman's comic strips. And recently when I came across one of his cartoons, it made me quite nostalgic. So I decided to find a collection of his works.
This book was witty and the scenarios depicted in it are still relevant. However it didn't make me "laugh out loud". It was okay.

Someone seems to have curated only Laxman's non-political cartoons, and they are mostly stinkers. Not worth reading unfortunately - was expecting better.

It is a hilarious way of representation of life and society with magical aid of a pencil that eches out the characters which found relevance in the society!
