I used to be a drummer in a punkrock band before I became a comic artist. What is a good life? That is the common thread in my work. I like to write and draw stories about minimalism and resistance, about making important choices, about people who dare to go against the grain for a higher purpose.

My book ‘Vincent’ is published in more than twenty countries around the world. 'The philosopher, the dog and the wedding' is my latest graphic novel, about one of the first female philosophers from ancient Greece. It is translated into English, Spanish and French, and translations in Korea, China and Albany are on the way.

Dutch artist and writer Barbara Stok’s Vincent is the second graphic novel I’ve read from SelfMadeHero’s “Art Masters” series, after reviewing Munch last month. It’s another biographical study of an artist, in this case of Vincent van Gogh. Oddly, though, the drawing style and the subject’s vibrant shock of red hair reminded me most of Agatha.

The book focuses primarily on the time van Gogh spent in the South of France. He settled in Arles, staying first in a hotel and then in a large rental house he hoped to turn into an artists’ colony – he temporarily attracted Paul Gauguin before driving him away with his strict, workaholic ways and his temper.

In presumably authentic letters to his younger brother Theo (an art dealer who supported him financially) back in Paris, van Gogh details his progress and tells of his fondness for the Provence scenery. I particularly love the panels where you can spot the direct inspiration for some of van Gogh’s most famous paintings: wheat fields, cypress trees, sunflowers, irises, a starry night sky, and even his cluttered bedroom.

We also get insights into the philosophy behind van Gogh’s work: “An artist has to put character and emotion into his work, not just paint whatever sells,” he insists to an art dealer who expects him to pander to public taste. “I use lots of different techniques, all mixed together. I like to exaggerate the colors in order to capture the soul of the subject,” he explains to a couple of fellow painters who take an interest in him. He used thick, confident brush strokes and painted quickly, making him annoyingly prolific in others’ eyes.

Stok does a wonderful job of depicting van Gogh as a misunderstood genius who drove people away with his lack of social skills, and sensitively introduces the breakdown during which he famously cut off his ear. He admitted himself to a mental hospital, where he could be treated for his epileptic attacks and continued to paint natural scenes under supervision.

The book closes on what seems to be a fairly positive note: van Gogh voluntarily leaves the hospital and moves to Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris, where he can be closer to Theo and his young family. “I foresee a future full of problems, but I’m not pessimistic,” he declares to his brother. And yet the final page shows a pair of gravestones: Vincent died in 1890 at age 37 and Theo just a year later, at 33.

Turn back one page and you see what might actually be a rather ominous scene: van Gogh has been painting in a wheat field; in one last two-page spread, he has disappeared from view and a flock of crows has taken off and filled the sky. Were they startled by the gunshot of his attempted suicide? While still true to the facts of van Gogh’s life, it’s a refreshingly subtle ending. Stok perfectly captures van Gogh’s personality amid the warm colors of the French countryside, and whetted my appetite to read his letters for myself. I’d recommend this to anyone with an interest in the lives of artists, whether you think you’re a fan of graphic novels or not.

With thanks to the publisher, SelfMadeHero, for the free copy. Translated from the Dutch by Laura Watkinson.

Maybe it’s partly because I know so little about him, but Vincent Van Gogh has always seemed a bit distant and cold - a genius but an isolated and seemingly unknowable one. So I’m thankful that Barbara Stok has created Vincent, a wonderful graphic novel looking at the last few years of Van Gogh’s life, which brings a warmth and character to the artist.

The book opens as Vincent leaves Paris for Provence, an area of France where he would go on to create his most iconic paintings from the sunflowers to Dr Gauchet to the starry night, and of course, die.

By far the most striking thing about the book is Stok’s art style which, if you can see the cover, is almost childlike in its uncomplicated approach but attractively simple - almost achieving that spareness that artists strive for as the highest level of their art. Couple that with the vivid and enormously effective use of colours and you have an utterly beautiful comic! The simplicity of the lines and the bright colours are qualities I feel Vincent would approve of - he certainly talks effusively about the use of strong colours quite a bit in this book.

Besides the art is the excellent writing where the reader learns about Vincent and his brother Theo’s close relationship - Theo was his benefactor his entire life, sending Vincent money which allowed him to paint full time - as well as Vincent’s own neuroses about paying his brother back his money, something Theo always told him he didn’t need to do.

However, this obsession with money drove Vincent to create painting after painting. Getting up early, he would set out and paint fields, plants, the skyline and the landscape, all of which led to the perfection of his style. He hated the image of the lazy artist and devoted every waking moment to his work - when he encounters the artist Dodge, he chastises him for wasting time not painting!

Unfortunately his admirable work ethic and incredible production rate led to his already fragile health debilitating further. While the country air and change of scenery seems to have done him good in the short term, his unresolved physical problems came back to haunt him. Nobody is really sure what Van Gogh suffered from but in this book it’s put down to epilepsy and severe anxiety where he would black out and then come to hours later, unaware of what he’d done (it’s during one of these episodes that the famous ear-mutilation episode happens).

Stok also highlights Vincent’s obsession with setting up an artist’s studio in Arles, one that would attract painters from around the world as a hub and continue for generations. This leads to him inviting Paul Gauguin to stay with him which saw the two artists create great art but also fall out for good - Vincent was not an easy person to live with!

Stok’s approach to the book is superb - several pages go by at a time without words as we see Vincent going for a walk, looking for the best spot, and then paint; some pages are filled with words as Vincent writes to Theo; some pages are a pleasing blend of words and imagery. Stok knows when to write exposition, when to introduce dialogue, and when to let the pictures speak for themselves - it’s a masterful balancing act that works perfectly so the reader is never overwhelmed with information and the pages have room to breathe.

She makes the inspired choice to show Vincent’s psychosis as dots around his head - when he is slightly manic, she peppers dots around his head, and the dots increase the more he loses control, so that when he’s in his most disastrous phase of self-destruction, the entire panel is filled with dots!

Also, she doesn’t reproduce Van Gogh’s work but depicts them in her own style which is delightful in its own way. The page where Vincent holds his paintbrush like a bow against a violin while his starry night plays in the background as if he’s conducting a celestial orchestra of colours is absolutely beautiful.

It’s not the most informative book though as the last few pages’ significance was lost on me until I went and read up on Vincent’s last days. Stok closes the book by drawing one of his last paintings - Wheat Field With Crows - which is gorgeous but is important as it’s possible that’s the place he committed suicide, by shooting himself with a gun, a scene we don’t see.

He wouldn’t die in the field but the bullet would remain lodged inside him as the country doctors weren’t qualified enough to perform surgery and an infection, brought on by the wound, would kill him. Then again, this book doesn’t pretend to be a definitive biography of the artist, but as more of a look at a certain period in his life, through an artistic lens of its own, and chooses to focus on the art and his life, rather than his death. It closes on the landscape he loved, not the drab room he passed away in and that was definitely the right choice.

Vincent is an enormously enjoyable look at one of the greatest painters of all time, rewarding the reader with glimpses into his life and mind thanks to Barbara Stok’s gifted storytelling. It’s also (importantly for a book on art) one of the most beautiful comics I’ve read all year - an absolutely brilliant graphic novel which I’d recommend to anyone and everyone with an interest in this artist.

I loved this work. And I have been mainly reading experimental art comics lately, so this is pretty conventional stuff, by comparison: a biography of a famous painter. I didn't expect to like it much, but I did. And by the looks of her other nine books that are not yet available in English, she is best known for her autobiographical comics, so I will seek them out. This looks like something that could have been undertaken for more commercial value, because it is a biography of a famous crazy artist, and lo and behold, this is her most successful venture, but it has real integrity and power. I am normally so leery of comic histories and biographies, so often reductive. But at their best they are evocative, and this is light and full of life and pages of almost wordless panels are juxtaposed with some of the lovely letter exchanges Vincent has with his wonderfully supportive brother. Some of the full page paintings she does herself are the best pages in the book; four such pages conclude the book, in silence, wonderfully.

So, I am predisposed to like this. I have read biographies of VanGogh all my life. Maybe the first was Stone's fictional bio Lust for Life which I read in high school. I grew up yearly making a pilgrimage from Grand Rapids, MI with my parents to the Chicago Art Institute, where we never missed their wonderful impressionist collection, where I marveled at all the Monet, Degas, Gauguin, and of course VanGogh. I have visited the VanGogh Museum in Amsterdam, gone to see various collections in Paris, read the Theo-Vincent Letters, etc etc: I'm a fan.

So this is a short and wondrously painted homage to VanGogh by Dutch comics artist Stok (who is from Groningen, where both my mother's [Kuiper] and father's families are from). I really want to read more of her work. This is one of those deftly poetic comic biographies, really lovely and colorful and respectful of the artist's commitment to art to exclusion of everything else to the point of madness. And she shares stories of his actual bouts of madness, stays in hospitals, depicted in a fashion he would have appreciated, surreal. A really interesting guy and a great artist. She doesn't cover up the flaws that drove so many people crazy and dismissive of him. But at the heart of this book is a love of art and life and the Theo-Vincent relationship that is a model for love everywhere. Nothing new, factually, but that's not the point; it's about the love of life and art.

Don McClain: "I could have loved you, Vincent. This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you."

Sumamente recomendable.

Van Gogh is my favorite painter and i am always so touched by his life story, his art, his illness that they almost always bring tears to my eyes. Really enjoyed this but for a graphic novel that is about an artist i am, ironically, not very impressed with the art.
(Also, completely unrelated but the physical book itself means so much to me because i'd purchased it from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and i'm like, 99% that that is my favorite place in the entire world)

I don’t know much about Van Gogh except he was prone to fits of emotional/mental crises which saw him cut off part of his ear and shoot himself. This GN could have easily just focused on these parts of his life but Stok paints a wonderful homage to Van Gogh and documents his time in Arles (in the south of France) where his dreams to become a renowned and celebrated artist is always at the forefront of his mind.

We see the beautiful (but sometimes strained) relationship Vincent had with his younger brother, Theo, an art dealer who offers his unconditional love and support (both emotional and financial) who wanted the best for Vincent but knew of his sensitive, passionate and sometimes volatile disposition but would do whatever it took to ensure Vincent was as happy as possible.

We see Vincent’s breakdown and time spent in a hospital which are some very sad and low points to the story but also his success with his sunflowers painting, and his vision of creating an artists’ house for himself and his artist friends (Gaugin). All I can say was that Vincent was an incredibly intense personality whose need to achieve and succeed in art possibly drove him to despair but Stok has captured his essence perfectly in this short GN and I would thoroughly recommend to all.

The illustrations in this were incredible and vividly captured Van Gogh as a tortured soul. Powerful stuff!

description

description

description

"We will pull the plough until it moves no longer.
And we shall gaze in admiration at the daisies
and the freshly stirred clods of earth
and the branches of the bushes that bud in spring,
the serene skies of limpid blue,
the big clouds of autumn,
the bare trees of winter,
the sun, the moon and the stars.
Whatever happens, that belongs to us."

~ Theo Van Gogh to Vincent Van Gogh 💙💛

I have been a Van Gogh fan for the longest time and had vowed to buy this book with my first paycheck in the US 😅
And I did! Although I read it only now on Van Gogh's 167th birthday (March 30).
This graphic novel perfectly captured his passion for art, his genius and his lifelong struggle with his mental health. Quite predictably, I teared up and the book actually left me heartbroken by the end.

Btw, do watch the movie "Loving Vincent" if you haven't seen it yet, as it's a work of art on its own.

Pictured here is my absolute favorite sweatshirt and also my Kindle 💙💚

Especialmente as tradicionais.)

AMO AMO AMO.

"One tube of chrome yellow, please".

Really cute art, it gave me a cute view of the life Vincent Van Gogh had. But as I saw other review I noticed that other readers noted that the author really sugar coated his story. And as a person that loves art but knows close to nothing of their painters personal life, I can't say this novel helped me. So I recommend this book only if you are interested in Barbara Stok art and not really the personal life of Vincent Van Gogh.

Yıllar sonra bir yeniden okuma. Yine keyifli.

Vincent van Gogh is my favourite artist. The way his depression was portrayed in the illustrations was amazing. I loved this graphic novel so much

Konuya ilgi duyanlara 2010 yapımı "Van Gogh: Painted with Words" belgeselini izlemelerini de öneririm.
Evet bu arada, hepimiz "Loving Vincent" ı bekliyoruz. Heyecanla, çok heyecanla bekliyoruz!

Oh Vincent, I can be fascinated by so many art styles and obscure artists and niche movements but you just stole my heart first, didn't you? It's actually because of his and Kandinskij's works that I discovered art history, back in elementary school, and his story has been told a thousand times in a thousand different ways, but it still gets me every time. This graphic novel (brought to Italy by the one and only @baopublishing ) describes the last years in Van Gogh's life in a simple and straightforward style: as I said, it wasn't anything I didn't already know, but it was really nice to get to experience it through another media! Much appreciated were the little snippets of his letters to Theo, inserted directly on page, and the renditions of some of his masterpieces. Overall, I think this graphic novel was super cute to experience and I'd mainly recommend it to younger people and people who want to approach the world of art from an easier perspective, but I can't refrain from recommending the actual bind-up of his letters and Irving Stone's "Lust For Life" if you want a deeper insight into Van Gogh's life. Oh, and the "Vincent and the Doctor" episode of Doctor Who, too!
