Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction. Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.
Sherlock Holmes in just about every iteration is my happy place. I will read and reread these stories many more times before my Earthly trip is at its end. I read the paper and glue versions of these stories 30 years ago, and then again about 10 years ago, and this time around, I listened to 72 magnificent hours of Stephen Fry’s perfectly matched narration. It was Heaven.
Well, it's unarguably one of the best classics ever authored in all English literature!! I fell in love with this ever since high school, and I'm still on my way to finishing it (currently at the Casebook of S.H), trying to find time in my busy work schedules. Highly recommend it for whoever is out there that wants to get a taste of the post-Victorian England's picturesque and iconic criminal underworld and the brilliant mastermind behind solving them!
What a FANTASTIC collection. Aside from some extremely problematic language and offensive slurs that are unfortunately characteristic of older writing, this collection was superb. I listened to the Audible recording narrated by Stephen Fry which was impeccable. I will absolutely listen again.
Conan Doyle delivers great short stories of Sherlock and Watson. Along with 5 larger books this complete set allows the reader to enjoy all the stories in one.
