There's no smell quite like a decomposing corpse. When Detectives Daggers and Steele find a body washed ashore after two weeks at sea, they're only too happy to put it behind them, following the trail to a quaint, seaside village--but the town's idyllic exterior can't hide a rotten core. The victim was in a venomous marriage, the local police might be corrupt, and a pervasive legend lingers on the lips of every local. Daggers soon has his hands full, but it's a more personal issue keeping him up at night--a dark fault lingering within. With his relationship with Steele floating adrift, Daggers must figure out how to steer both the case and his troubles to safe harbor. The future is murky, like a frothy gray sea of LIQUID STEELE. *** This is book nine of the Daggers & Steele mystery series. Book ten, MAN OF STEELE, is now available. Hi! I'm mystery, fantasy, and science fiction author Alex P. Berg. Be sure to check out my bestselling Daggers & Steele series, a fun, fast-paced fantasy/noir mystery hybrid! I've also written urban fantasy, epic sci-fi, and more.
My review rating system is as follows: 5 = Amazing, I absolutely loved it! (Fantastic!) 4 = A very good book, although I had a few quibbles with it. (Great!) 3 = A book I liked, but either it had a few more serious problems or I didn't connect well with it. (Still good!) 2 = I had major issues with this book. (Not very good...) 1 = Unfortunately, I hated this book. (Real bad!) DNFs get no star rating.
An entirely new setting for Daggers and Steele this time around, out in a small country/fishing village. Seeing them interact with a different police force was interesting, and interesting to see Dagger's private issues rising, which causes conflicts with him and Steele. Good murder mystery and as usual, a great tale!
Great series, each book is well written an a little better than the last. The characters are all likable, except the bad guys of course, but Daggers is a good dude (he is the main character). I have enjoyed the series so far an am a bit disappointed it will end at 10, but always better to end on top, then Peter out. It is a bit more squishy as the main character develops a love interest, but a fun light read nevertheless.
I could always rely on a damn good mystery yarn with some elements of fantasy thrown in. But essentially this is a series about relationships. And that is what I will miss the most.
The change in Steele's character is what stuck me the most about this book. After I became aware that the series has only one more book, Man of Steele, that made more sense. Daggers and Steele's relationship is more of a focus in this book and seems to be getting to a conclusion as well. This was the meet the parents book and done in the humorous way that Steele handles all big moments, badly. So sorry to know the series is coming to an end. I have looked forward to each new instalment and new case.
I have enjoyed this excellent series of books so far. Jake and Shay will be learning more about relationships and Quinto will discover something missing from his life. Yes, there is an excellent well written mystery but there is a lesson to be learned as well.
Enjoyable series. This book was quite well written with good descriptions, humor and good character interactions. Each book has been better than the last and this one was certainly no exception.
