I usually refrain from reading vernacular books, but Ashwathama caught my attention. The subject was that of Mahabharat era, which itself is quiet interesting. I started reading this book as I was intrigued by the main character - ASHWATHAMA. Generally, there is very less literature available on Ashwathama - son of Drona and this book presents Mahabharat from his point of view.
Hats off to the Mr Ashutosh Garg for penning this huge epic of Mahabharat in a very concise book, that too in a very apt way!!
The book covers most of the major incidences/ scenes from the Mahabharat and they may not be in chronological order, but, convey appropriate understanding of the epic.
Mr Garg beautifully wrote Ashwathama's view about various incidences and ultimately it was left for the reader to decide what to think of it.
An absolutely unputdownable book!

Nice Book with the angle of Aswathama but Truth is that many prospective of Aswathama emerged due to Author attachment towards the characters"

Point to be Noted:-
* Author tried hard to hide the fact that the original account of Mahabharata given light on this side of Aswathama.

*Aswathama, even being son of Drona was long lasting friend of Duryodhana (even knowing that Duryodhana has envy for Pandavas).

Ashwasthama : Mahabharata ka Shapit Yoddha by Ashyutosh Garg- (Hindi) I have been able to locate books on various characters of Mahabharaga- Karn, Draupadi, Krishna, Bhishma Pitamah, Vasudev, eetc but this is the first book on Ashwasthama. Minor incidents about the life of Ashwasthama are depicted effectively in the book. First, poverty - Dronacharya was poor and could not afford milk for Ashwasthama, so water and floor were mixed to look like milk and he was fed. two, Ashwasthama was non partial and believed in equal opportunity for all. He disliked the idea of his father sparing more time for Arjuna to learn the art of weapon training. Ashwasthama did not appriciate when his faher Drona asked Eklavya to cut his thumb and give it to Drona as Guru dakshina. three- during swayamwar of Draupadi, Aswasthama did not participate and kept aloof. four-Ashwasthama keep good company- he liked the company of Minister Vidur. Vidur was philosophical and brief. Dhritrashtra had asked both of them to accompany the Pandavas to the gates of Hastinapur when Pandavas wer visitng Varnawat. Vidur briefly informed Pandavas about the eminent danger to their lives and how they can avoid death. four, in the palace of illusions of Pandavas, Ashwasthama and Kauravs were invited. Pandavas had completed Ashwamegh yagna. Agrapuja was to be done for one the top peronalities of the time. Yudhistar and Piamah suggested the name of Krishna. Some one suggest the name of Ashwasthama. For Agrapuja , Ashwasthama withdrew his name at once in favour of Shri krishna. In the palace of illusions, Ashwasthama enjoyed the view but did not acttively participate in seeing things personally. Thus he did not fall in the pond which looked like shinning ground. five during the 15th day war, Yudhistar infomred Dronacharya that Ashwasthama had been killed. In grief, Dronacharya left his arms in his chariot and sat on the ground in penance. Just then, Dristadumna came and cut his head. Ashwasthama was unhappy by the way the Pandavas killed his father Dronacharya. Ashwasthama wanted to take revenge. He used the celestal weapon named Narayana astra. Pandavas did not have any other celestial weapon to counter this weapon. Shri Krishna informed all that if they lie down on the ground in respect of this celestial weapon, it will not harm them. On the 18 th and last day of the epic Mahabharta, Duryodhana declared Ashwasthama as army commander of Hastinapur empire. Only three warriors were alive, Ashwasthama, his maternal uncle Kripacharya and Kritverma, yadav warrior. They attacked the Panchal camp in the night and were able to kill Dhristadumna, Shikhandi, Uttamauja and five children to Pandavas. They burned the camp and killed the women also. Pnadavas, Krishna and Draudpadi. After the war Krishna, Pandavas, Satyaki, Yuyutsu, Vrishketu survived. Pandavas tried to capture Ashwathama . Ashwasthama fired the celestial weapon named Brahmastra on the Pndavas. Arjun also fired his celestial weapon Brahmastra. These two weapons could destroy the world. Rishi Vyas asked both of them to withdraw their weapons. It has been written in the book that in order to withdraw the Brahma astra, a person should not have done any wrong- as Ashwasthama has killed the sleeping Dristadumna and others his power to withdraw the weapon was no more. Arjun withdrew his Brahmastra back. In anger towards Pandavs, Ashwasthama changed the direction towards the womb of Uttra. Shri Krishna saves Uttara's son in the womb. Bhim asks Ashwasthama to cut the large diamond on his head. Ashwasthama cuts and removes his diamond and hands over to Yudhistar. Krishna curses Ashwasthama that his wounds will never heal and he will live for ever alone. The Books ends preaching the wishes of Shri Krishna that girl child should be protected and war does not solve problems. It is one book which may encourage better authors to write on Ashwasthama. It is still quite a good read book.

I opted this book with huge expectation but indeed its not turn out to be good enough. Awathama by Ashutosh Garg is a short written novel with the point of view of ashwathama but its merely a commentary of Epic Mahabharata (retold). As I am a huge fan of Mahabharat (It’s a till date very well written script with huge multi-dimensional characters) previously i have read a lot of about it but “Palace of illusion” by chitra divakaruni Banerjee is my all-time favorite. In this book author describes the important incidences from Mahabharata from the mouth of Ashwatthama but the story of births of drounacharya and kripacharya was new to me and I liked that part of book. Author had used easy language of writing but it’s not capable of keep the readers engage if he/she is not so called “Reader”
Last few pages are interesting where Ashwatthama mentioned about himself and the intent of Shree Krishna’s curse of “immortal’.
Overall, its just a light read. Author misses the mark where he can describes more dialogues & point of view of ashwatthama regarding different incidents or during that episodes of incidents.
Ashwatthama is very popular character among the various and incredible characters of Mahabharata, its good thing that author tried to lighten that character but its not up to that marg. Its was my first book from this writer I will like to try his other work also.
I will give it 2.5 stars.

So the only thing interesting about the book is its name. Most of the thing we have already read in the various books. Just describing a story from a different person's point of view is not enough . Further on the book is in Hindi, the author can not even claim that some of the things might not have been known to the international reader. Its just a summery description of Mahabharata. It should have been more aggressive where Ashwatthama defends his actions and not Simply gives in to Krishna because he is god. Further I feel writers own reverence to Krishna comes out too drastically.

This book gives an overview of the entire story of Mahabharat. Since the book is about Ashwathama, he has been portrayed in a positive shade. However, not all authors and their works show him as a positive character in the Mahabharata. Also, the book has been written as a narration by Ashwathama after the events of the war. So he has been shown in a grieving and repenting tone. I liked the book, especially the conclusion as to why Ashwathama suffered the fate that he did.

Very ordinary book on an extraordinary person

The author has not provided any understanding of his own. Only shared known stories and incidents. Not explored an alternative narrative to the incidents from Ashwathama's perspective. No creative writing. Overall the book is pretty ordinary offering nothing new.

it is not the story of Ashwat, it is Mahabharata. only intro and closing thoughts are a little better...but the book disappointed me. I thought the writer has done some kind of research on the character and this will give different perceptions and input and we will get to know more about the lead character. but no, it's Mahabharata only!

Aswathama ke naam par dhoka
Puri novel aswathama par nahi mahabharat aur pandav par kendrit hai. Yanha aswathama bas narrator ke taur par hai jo puri pustak se gayab hai
Aur uspar kendr bas akhiri chapter me hi banta hai.
Kisi bhi kism ki nayi jankari aswathama ke bare me ye book nahi deti hai.ye un logo ke liye pustak hai jo sanchhipt me mahabhart ki kahani janana chahte hain

Its a very very bad experience👎👎👎👎👎

Interesting narrative

Interesting narrative. Quite relatable but nothing new. No aspect of the story is new. Nothing about protagonist's personal life. Same old story just the narrator has changed.

Felt as if I was watching the Mahabharata. Few perspectives were quite new especially the comparison the writer portrayed about Shri Krishna and Shri Ganga Putra Bhisma. Shri Krishna had let go his pledge to save the dharma and Shri Ganga Putra Bhisma had let go the dharma to save his pledge.
