Scenen er et kursted ved Rhinen ved navn Roulettenburg, og som navnet antyder, er det ikke blot varme bade, gæsterne fornøjer sig med.

Blandt aktørerne finder vi en falleret russisk general, en vis mademoiselle Blanche, som generalen har tabt sit hjerte til, og ikke mindst hans aldrende og meget velhavende tante kaldet babusjka som alle håber snart vil dø.

Hovedpersonen er den unge huslærer Aleksej Ivanovitj. Han er forelsket I generalens steddatter Polina, og for at redde hende ud af en økonomisk knibe giver han sig til at spille roulette. Han gribes imidlertid af spillelidenskab, og snart har han glemt alt omkring sig, inklusive Polina.

Når man først er kommet ind i historien, er den lidt fængende. Men det er og bliver kioskbaskerlitteratur!
