Can this relationship be saved? Maybe not! A deputy sheriff from a long line of hunters, an apprentice witch from a long line of sorcerers~what can they possibly have in common? Never mind~Shane McAllister and Haley Greco will ride this lovely wave as long as they can make it last.
In the meantime, they’re each working to clean up the strange town of Moonhaven with its Alice in Wonderland themes and its oddball inhabitants, trying to solve a few murders and find out what happened to Haley’s missing family. If only Haley’s grandmother—the one who brought her back from the dead—wouldn’t always seem to be the guilty party. Just what is she planning, anyway? A Mad Hatter's game of Musical Chairs?
I received this book for free in return for an honest review. This is the third book in the series and it is every bit as enjoyable as the others are. This story introduces some new characters. Some are truly evil and some are absolutely adorable. There are some twists that I did not expect, but it kept me reading to see what would happen next. And you are given a bit more information on Haley and what happened to her. I can't wait for the next story to follow the trail to find information on her family and what happened to Haley at the beginning of her adventure.
I received a free copy of this book to give an honest review. J.D. Winters is one of my favorite cozy mystery writers. I love the Destiny Bay series. So when I received an e-mail to review the 3rd book in the Moonhaven series, I jumped at the chance. This series is new to me and I started with the 3rd book in the series. While I am sure that it'd be easier to read them in order, I had no trouble keeping up with what was going on.
The book opens with Haley struggling to learn magic and do a spell according to what her gran-ana told her to do. I learned very quickly that gran-ana is no one to be reckoned with. She is a very powerful and respected sorceress and is grooming Haley to take over. However, Haley is a very relatable character and doesn't always do the spells to perfection. You learn that a car accident occurred in Haley's past and gran-ana had something to do with saving her, but that there is a price to be had for it, but that has yet to come to light. Haley suffers from amnesia because of this and everyone around her is aware and helps her out.
Moonhaven is a town of humans and supernaturals and they are very likable folks - vampires, shapehifters, elves, witches, etc. Haley runs the local bakery and seems to always be getting herself involved in the latest murder that has occurred in town. This time her childhood homestead is involved and so are the ghosts that her best friend, Rennie, planted there to attract a camera crew from a Hollywood ghost hunter TV show. When a murder occurs, Haley gets to work solving it, but she is not sure who to trust and wants to trust everyone. The local sheriff, Shane, is a former flame and a witch hunter and you can tell that there is still something strong between them. What ensues is a non-stop menagerie of clues, spells and "supers" helping Haley to discover who the murderer is and what exactly gran-ana is hiding about her past.
This was a really good, fast paced read - thoroughly enjoyable.
“Witches in Wonderland” earns 5/5 Mad Hatter’s Musical Chairs!
I am new to the writing team of J.D. Winters and Dakota Kahn’s Wicked in Moonhaven series, and this third book “Witches in Wonderland” has been the perfect place to start my reading adventure: Ghosts? Witches? Murder? All the things you want to whet your appetite for the ‘spooky.’ Everything takes place in the town of Moonhaven, one with a very eclectic, if not quirky, population: humans and witch hunters along with shape shifters, vampires, witches, elves… What could possible go wrong? Well, lots!
The story is an exciting page turner that I couldn’t put down, and as a newbie, I never felt out of the loop because enough information was provided to the backstory and character connections. And the revelations and “Oh, my…” ending has made me a fan wanting to go back and read the first two books. The characters are well developed, and I enjoyed following Haley who suffers from some amnesia about past events which seems to weave through the story with some clues, but mostly questions, about how those events came about and how they define the character. I also enjoyed her struggles to improve her magical abilities and live up to the legacy of her Gran Ana and the prospect of being groomed to one day take her Gran Ana’s place in the community. Playing out in the background we have Haley’s bakery, interactions between humans and paranormals, and the rekindled romance between Haley, a witch, and Shane, a witch hunter. I had fun and highly recommend this book.
Disclosure: A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own.
This series somehow just wanders all over. Everything is a question and there are never any answers. Personally, I find it more annoying than pleasurable to read. Unfortunately, you do have all these questions so you wind up buying the next one, hoping that some questions will get answered. Nope, just more new questions. The teeny bit doled out near the end of this one was no more than we have figured out for ourselves already. Now, the author has made a sale, but if these don't start being a little more fun, and some resolution occur somewhere, I'm probably going to give up. The main character can't evolve, can't develop, because there are always more questions and mysteries which never get answered. Please, let's start developing this character a little; some of this stuff begs for resolution. Answer the questions and let's move on. Maybe this is just me, maybe it's not my cup of tea, but I'm not feeling good three books in.
Another great read but disappointed that it didn't have anything concrete about her parents and brother. When she is called to help the mayor's wife wife the latest renters of her childhood home, she's not sure what to expect. The empty houses have been made available to ghosts that are to haunt the renters. The problem is that these ones want to film them! This would draw the Council and they don't take kindly to this sort of initiative. When one of the crew is murdered all eyes are fixed on trying to find out who and what? Is it one of the local residents or one of the crew? Why does she want to help so badly? What is wrong with the male ghost that barrelled into her when she had visited the house? Will she learn anymore about her past? A good read but wish the " baddie " hadn't been so obvious.
I always feel frustrated, confused, and irritated while reading this series. Since I imagine these are feelings Haley shares, the authors are either incredibly deft at drawing the reader into their world or incredibly chaotic writers (but I don't know which is correct!). The way Haley handles the "doomed" reality of her relationship with Shane is mature and a bit heartbreaking. The introduction of Mandy and Shrimp adds charm, a little more backstory for Haley, and a much-needed support system for the plucky witch-in-training. Gran Ana is unlikable and seems to only consider Haley as something to use, but I do find her assessment of her son intriguing; his choice to leave takes on a certain significance... I must see something in the chaos, because I am grabbing Book 4!
Witches in Wonderland is the third book for the Wicked in Moonhaven series and we get more information on Haley and her accident and coming back from the dead. She is getting more details and memories about her accident and family. Her friend Rennie is involved in a new real estate project and finds a murdered body in the rented house. So another fun cozy mystery adventure filled with unexpected twists. Was unable to put this book down and eagerly waiting for the next in this series to learn more about Haley and her accident and what happened to her family. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book and enjoyed it.
Loved seeing just how much Haley has grown and what she was able to learn about herself and her family. Shane is completely an enigma, you are not sure about him just like Haley is not sure about him. I am looking forward to seeing what happens between Shane and Haley.
I loved the new characters and hope Mandy stays on in future books. Gran Ana relieves more about herself also. You are still not all that sure if she is good or not, or if she is just semi-good and what is her ultimate goal. Haley, like the reader, is swayed between liking her and being very afraid of her. It just adds to the mystery.
The first book, Even Witches Get the Blues, was quite good. However, in this book, a few things bother me. A lot. For instance, Krissy. Book one, rape victim, moved away, gave birth to a daughter Carly Ann. Book two, suddenly back in Moonhaven, involved with the love of her life who is the father of her son, Gavin. Rennie, book one, no mention of her being anything other than an ordinary human. Book two, she's got powers? I feel insulted.
I can't get enough of this series! In this story, Haley and Shane are dealing with murder, ghosts and witches. The murder mystery is a good one. In the meantime, Haley continues to work on her skills in spellcasting and she learns a bit more about her past. I love the characters, the relationships and the humour! Highly recommended.
Having a witch protagonist with amnesia differentiated this from other cozy witch mysteries. So did the fact that her grandmother kept secrets from her. The ghosts haunting a house for tourists was fun and there was no electricity in the haunted houses either! The paranormal showdown at the end was great. I would read more books by these authors, including their other series.
Moonhaven is a busy place, and mysteries seem to occur more frequent!y, and Haley always ends up in the middle. Her witch powers are getting stronger although she often does not really know what or how she is doing? Can't wait to find out more about what Gran Ana did and how Haley's family will be found.
Felt disappointed that the reader is still left in the dark about Haley and her family. When Haley's old house is used to film a ghost hunter show, with ghosts supplied by the mayor's wife. Murder and mayhem occurs leaving Haley to play detective. And, learn who the mystery woman is and her connection to her grandmother.
In this book, Haley learns more about her past, stumbles into another murder, meets someone who knew her before she lost her memory and starts to get closer to Shane. Just all in a days work for our favorite witch in training. This is a very cute and fun read. I am really enjoying this series and can't wait for more
I absolutely loved this adventure. If you don't read this book, you have missed a great read
Hailey, wow! I wasn't expecting her to be so gutsy, fiesty, so many hats she had to wear. she didn't let fear Stop her. She is a fighter, nothing is going to stop her and of course the cinnamon rolls are to die for. P!ease read this book.Ifs the bomb!
I really enjoyed this book. So many supernaturals living in a haven town with the normals being totally unaware. Throw in a murder and a bit of romance and you have a story that was great from beginning to end.
there are too many errors for this grammar/spelling/punctuation Nazi. I am incapable of ignoring those errors, and have wondered on numerous occasions if indie authors have competent proofreaders/copy editors.
Haley receives a call from her best friend to come to the house that she doesn't remember growing up in. There is a film company who rented the place to record and produce an episode of Ghost Hunters. Later that night one of the film crew is found murdered on the property.
A Sheriff and a witch, what could they have in common. Shane and Hailey will try to make it. These two characters make an amazing, cute story with romance and mystery thrown in. Received an ARC.
Sometimes you just want to smack Haley across the side of the head and yell wake up and smell the coffee. She seems pretty dim at figuring things out but her hidden past keeps me interested.
I have recommended this to my best friend and I hope you have more coming of Moonhaven. I could see me right there. I loved all three books. From Sandy
