In a village wrapped about with strange monsters and superstition, a new kind of child is born. Half-man half-monster, the villagers fear their own children and, turning against them, burn them at the stake. But a small band of resilient Halfbreeds escape their executioners and take up their home in the wild. In a desperate attempt to find their place in the world, these children question what it really means to be human.
I am a classics expert verging on the fanatic, and never smile more than when you ask me a literary question! I've been writing since I could first put words together, and am honored to have two novels published.
In the spring of 2016, I polished and edited my very first book, a fantasy novel called Halfbreeds, and sent it hopefully into the world of publishing. To my astonishment, Clean Reads scooped it up and published it in June of 2017. I couldn’t believe it – I was a published author!
I have just self-published my second novel, Trinian, about three people who struggle to overcome their own faults in order to save the world from malicious gods.
While working on my many other novels in progress, I also write about the literary classics on my blog, thefairytaleblog.com.
For a day job, I I write for a community magazine whose mission it is to bring people together. To learn more about my novels, you can visit my blog thefairytaleblog.com.
Disclaimer: This book was written by my friend's daughter, so I had to read it!
Fantasy is not my usual genre, and I was completely baffled after Chapter 1. Luckily, my husband DOES read fantasy, and he told me this is normal. You get completely immersed in the story in Chapter 1, and then things get explained later. I'm so glad he told me that, because it prompted me to keep reading.
By Chapter 3, I was beginning to really care about the characters, since I had some understanding of their world and how they fit into it.
Elizabeth's writing is beautiful. It paints pictures in your mind and transports you to another world. Another reviewer said it was "lyrical," and I agree.
The only reason I did not give five stars is because I wanted it to be more of an allegory, I suppose. With one of the characters being a Catholic priest, I wanted the Halfbreeds to represent something more. I thought I had it, but in the end, my analogies didn't seem to hold. It is sort of a story of good versus evil, but at the same time you see that things are not as black and white as they appear. Perhaps because fantasy is NOT my usual genre, I missed something along the way, and I own up to that.
All in all, I'm glad I read it! Perhaps I'll have to read more in the genre to get a better feel for it.
This is my novel, so I can't give an impartial review. However, I will say it's my favorite so far of all my novels! The characters are always with me, and their story relates to my life more often than I'd like to admit!
