Trapped in darkness, can an escort find a man to help him into the light?

Gabriel Reyes never gave in. He fought and was hurt, was abused but escaped with his life. He made his way in the world using the one thing he was good at: sex. Using his body, he earned the flash car and the apartment with the views. Gabriel’s a success; he’s made it.

He needs no one, and he has no one. But that’s okay because he’s safe.

Cameron Stafford hires Gabriel for a night, needing nothing more than eye candy to persuade his family that he’s happy. With the money he has in the bank and a job that takes him all over the world, why wouldn’t he be happy? It doesn’t matter that a degenerative disease is stealing his vision; for now, he has a purpose.

One night with an escort was all it was supposed to be, until Cam is thrust into Gabriel’s world. He soon realizes he’s fallen for Gabriel; a man caught in his own world of darkness.

A new story set in the world of Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes and the Double D Ranch, Texas.

This book has lots of abuse, so if that's a trigger for you, skip this one.
It was ok but I was disappointed at the little time these two actually spent together on page. Many things are going on in their individual lives, so we spend a lot of time reading about them and not about Gabe and Cam as a couple. Every other aspect of their lives is developed except for their relationship.

Gabriel is book 2 in R.J. Scott's Legacy Ranch series. I have to admit I was slightly disappointed in this story because there isn't much of "Legacy Ranch" in the story. I would say 85% of the story takes place away from the ranch, is about Gabriel and his horrible life and how he meets Cam Stafford. Additionally, we get to see Cam's messed up family, who are really beyond help, and OTT cruel to Cam, simply because he is blind. Add in, Six, Cam's family friend/bodyguard/Concierge- who also may be a bit of a mercenary. I wasn't sure exactly what the overall goal of the story was beyond getting Gabriel to Legacy Ranch and hoping Cam and him got a HEA.

Don't even get me started on Gabriel's pimp, Stefan. He is scum and watching Gabriel go back to him each time something happened, was pretty hard. Gabriel had several "outs" but he was so broken, he didn't trust any of them.

We don't get to see much of Jack & Riley in this book, yet another sadness for me. There were also some additional characters at Legacy Ranch that I don't remember from any of the other stories. However, it could have just been too many books ago for me to remember them as there has been quite the break of time between books in this series.

Overall, a story that didn't leave me with any strong feelings either way..just sort of a "meh" feeling. This could just be a case of me and the book not clicking as others seem to really enjoy the story.

I wanted to kill people while reading this book

Stefan was an utter bastard, let me just get that right out of the way first.

This one could be the biggest study in contrasts in the whole Texas series as it touches on both the extreme depravity of man and on the most pure of heart.

Gabriel is, like the angel he's named for, also a mixture, at once quite child like in his ways of dealing with things like emotions, in another so worldly wise that nothing which happens to him knocks him off his curve of feeling worthless.

It takes a special man to see beyond the broken shell and Cameron is just that guy, ironic as his eyesight has been degenerating since he was a child. He doesn't need his vision though to know there's something worth connecting with under Gabe's outward behaviour.

This is a beautiful story not of someone else saving Gabe but of Cam giving him the strong foundation to dig deep and find his own worthiness.

When I read the blurb for this story, I knew parts were going to be very tough to read, knew major amounts of kleenex would probably be needed. . Maybe I am an "odd duck" as the saying goes, but MY reaction to all the horrific things said and done to Gabriel at the hands of two sick and twisted individuals was pure, and unadulterated fury. I absolutely adored Gabriel. I wanted to grab him, protect him and hug him.
So abused and brainwashed, Gabriel thought, to some extent, he deserved what happened, deserved how he was treated and in his tortured mind, his abuser, Stefan, cared for him. I won't go into all the details, but while reading this, I wanted Hank and Stefan to die in long, drawn out painful ways. I wanted to see them suffer as Gabriel did.
On a lighter side, we have Cam, who is dealing with his horrific family, aside from his sister Sophia, as best he can with his amazing, kick- ass friend, Six. LOVE both these men.
I won't give anymore away except for this.....I love Cam and Gabriel together. Their connection, strong feelings for each other and the way they are there for each other was fantastic.
So many great side characters that I am sure everyone will love as much as I do.
Do yourself a huge favor. Buy this book. Read this book. Fall in love with the MC's.
I was given an Advanced Readers Copy for my honest review.

The story of Gabriel is not an easy one to read, if you've read Kyle (The First Legacy) then you know you're not going to be in for an easy ride with this series. Completely broken at the hands of Hank and his cronies and now Stefan, Gabe has hit rock bottom and can't see there being a way up. When he meets Cam he realises there may just be a little more to life. This isn't a Texas book, you get a quick glimpse of Jack and Riley but this book isn't about them, they have their story, this is ALL about Gabe, Cam and their journey and what a journey it was. Absolutely wonderful <3

REVIEWED FOR LOVE BYTES

3.5 Stars

Gabriel is the second book in the Legacy Ranch series by RJ Scott and its main characters are Gabriel and Cameron. These two men are worlds apart in most aspects of their lives except for the hurt and pain they carry and a fear for their futures for very different reasons.

Gabriel is a tough character to read. He escaped one life of pain and abuse to fall quickly into another even if this one has the veneer of being better and Gabriel believes he is cared for. There is on page abuse that is not easy to witness and certainly won’t be for everyone. He is definitely a character that as a reader you will want to wrap up and protect.

To an outsider Cameron has it all. A hotel left to him by his grandparents and all the money he could ever need and probably not manage to spend. You would think this young man lived a charmed and easy life – you would be wrong. Cameron has a degenerative eye disease which is slowly making him blind and a dysfunctional family that see his being gay as a whim and his disability as making him incompetent. Neither of these things are true but his family are bullies and pretty horrendous human beings. At this point I should mention Six who quite literally has Cameron’s back and is a fantastic secondary character.

The blurb outlines the story. Cameron and Gabriel both need to heal, gain strength and move forward in their lives. I was a bit sad that we didn’t spend more time on the ranch, it features very little in this second story, but delighted that we got to see Jack and Riley once more.

I love reading RJ Scott books because she tackles sensitive matters with delicacy and grace. Her writing style is very visceral and poignant that I am often moved to tears. As with book 1, this second book was very angsty, emotionally taxing and subtly encouraging. The threads of hope kept me going through the hard to read parts because I know that we will eventually make it over to the other side. I would encourage readers to read Kyle, Book 1, to truly appreciate the importance of Legacy Ranch in this series because the impact of the safe haven was more evident in the first book.

Gabriel was first mentioned as one of the four boys abused the Bar Five Ranch by Hank Castille, who is currently in jail after the boys including Gabriel testified against Hank in court.
In this sequel, the reader was introduced to an emotionally and physically battered Gabriel who lives with Stefan, the man who “takes care of him and gives him what he needs” aka his pimp. It is clear from the start that Gabriel is in an incredible amount of physical, mental and emotional pain. When Gabriel is hired for a night to pretend to be the boyfriend of Cam Stafford, a rich, blind man, I saw the first real lifeline to a drowning Gabriel. Cam Stafford was the owner of the hotel where Stefan frequently set up Gabriel’s appointments, so Cam and his bodyguard Six had time to study Gabriel. The “work” association created an emotional link between two men whom found it difficult to connect with anyone due to abuse they continually suffered.

This book was difficult because the abuse was truly distressing, but the author kept giving the characters reasons to be optimistic. It was heartbreaking to read how warped Stefan’s actions with Gabriel were. The abusers were so sadistic that it required true acts of courage to break free. Eventually Kyle and Cam made it possible for Gabriel to ask for help and begin the process of deciding that he wanted to live. Legacy Ranch and the therapy there was the first step in Gabriel’s healing process. It took a lot to get there but I was so thankful that there was even a place for Gabriel and people who wanted so desperately to help him.

I have a small complaint with the fact that Cam didn’t really address his own issues. There were some self-worth issues there as well and it was just glossed over. Cam’s family situation was a hot mess. I felt bad for him too because no one seemed to have his back from when he was twelve. Having money didn’t make him immune to emotional abuse. I would have loved Cam spending some time at the ranch to work on himself while Gabriel worked on himself. I still loved him as a character because Cam tried his best to help and support Gabriel in getting the help he needed.
This series is well written and realistic that as the author warns readers, it may cause triggers for victims. I really enjoy RJ Scott’s work and can’t wait for book 3.

5 stars - OH GOD WHERE TO BEGIN. I don't know if my rambling mind will do justice to this book as I can't find the words to describe just how much I loved it, but let me start by saying.... Wow! I mean honestly, this was one hell of an emotional rollercoaster, but it was absolutely, heartbreakingly delightful! And I mean the "I want to cry all the tears" kind of delightful. I cried ALL the tears and then some, but I also laughed and smiled and "aww"ed and absolutely fell in love with this story.

Gabriel pulled me apart and then put me back together. It was everything I had hoped for and more. RJ Scott is one of my absolute favourite authors of romance and M/M romance, and I had been sure that she would not disappoint with this one, but I was surprised by just how much I was pulled into the story. I could not stop reading! I ended up staying awake until 1am to finish it (when I had to be up for work at 5am!) and I was still thinking about it all day afterwards.

From the start, Gabriel felt very different from RJ's other novels. This one was really quite dark in places, which I had expected from the blurb, but some scenes were really shocking and heartbreaking. RJ wrote it so well, and all of Cam and Gabriel's frustrations and emotional turmoil hit me right in the heart. It was AMAZING.

I don't even know how to express my love for the main characters. I seem to say this every time, but I adored them! Obviously Gabriel was pretty easy to love, not that he'd ever been loved in the right way before he met Cam, but I fell madly in love with him. Cam, too. They were so good for each other, and I was rooting for their happy ending and that's exactly why I stayed up so late reading... I had to get to that HEA!

RJ also kindly adds a forward to this one to warn her readers of the content and possible triggers - the book contains themes of abuse and assault and such, and Gabriel's mind is a pretty dark place at times. Those scenes were hard to read sometimes, but RJ really wrote them well and with such emotion! I love it when a story can pack such a punch and tug on the heartstrings like this one did.

As a side note, I haven't read The First Legacy: Kyle. Please don't hate me, I am absolutely downloading it to read once I have recovered. BUT for anyone who is the same as me, I assure you that this makes COMPLETE sense as a standalone novel. Anything you need to know is mentioned in this book itself, and I never felt like I was missing anything vital. I have knowledge of the series and have read the Texas series, so I did know Riley and Jack (who make a few brief appearances here), but again it's not essential to have read those either.

I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who likes a little angst and heartbreak with their romance, and to anyone who is looking for an emotional story with complicated but wonderful main characters.

This book comes with a health warning as follows: Be aware: emotional and physical abuse are depicted on the page in this book.

I’d advice anybody to heed this warning. If Kyle’s story in Legacy Ranch #1 was hard to read, this one takes the character’s pain and the reader’s discomfort a few steps further. There are no two ways about it, Gabriel’s plight will tear your heart out of your chest, break it and then stomp all over the broken pieces. And the thing is that it wasn’t Gabriel’s past and the violence and abuse he encountered there, or even the horrific treatment he accepts as normal in his present, that tore me apart. What really got to me was Gabriel’s acceptance of what had happened to him and what was still happening to him. His firm believe that his life is exactly what he deserves, because he’s not worth anything and, as his abuser continuously reminds him, because nobody could care for the worthless person he is.

Cam was a breath of fresh air in what otherwise would have been a story too bleak to read (for me). He has a host of issues of his own to deal with since he’s almost completely blind and as a result on the receiving end of his family treating him as an invalid and useless, despite the fact that he very successfully manages the hotel he owns. But while Cam has his challenges, he also has self-confidence and people (and a dog) to support him all the way.

When the two men get together it is because Cam books Gabriel’s services. But even from the start it’s clear there’s something between them — a spark that ignites something in both of them even if neither is willing (Cam) or able (Gabriel) to recognise it as such. And while it doesn’t take Cam long to acknowledge his growing feelings for Gabriel, Gabe hasn’t got it in him to believe anybody could care for him beyond the orgasm he so expertly delivers. As Stephen, his pimp (?), handler (?), abuser constantly reminds him, he is unlovable. The mind-fuck Stephen has pulled on Gabriel has him convinced that Stephen is his saviour and he deserves what Stephen does to him. To say Gabriel’s thoughts and believes broke my heart would be a gross understatement. All I wanted was to wrap Gabriel in my arms and hold him safe or, failing that possibility, allow Cam to do it for me.

And that’s all I’ll say. The Gabriel’s journey towards a place where he begins to recognise that he is worth more and might be loveable and even capable of loving somebody else is breathtaking if far from easy. Because this story doesn’t come with miracles, sudden flashes of insight and easy ‘happy-ever-afters’. And while that made the story at times very hard to read, it also provided a level of reality that made the ending to this story all the more touching and so very worthy of the tears in my eyes.

So my friends, heed the warning and then lose yourself in a story that will touch your heart and stay with you for a very long time.

There is a warning in the blurb - Be aware: emotional and physical abuse are depicted on the page in this book. This is a valid and important warning.

This is the second book in this spin off series about the young men who survived the nightmare of abuse at the hands of Hank and his bunch, but they have not come through unscathed.... Gabriel's plight tore out my heart and stomped it to bits. (yes, there was ugly crying)

Cam is the other MC and although he's not as damaged as Gabriel, he also has things to work through, both his past relationship and his whacked out family (OY!).

Although reading a lot of this story was hard, as a domestic abuse survivor, I can attest to the reality in Gabriel's thinking and self-doubt. Sometimes it's the scars on the inside that are the toughest to overcome.

I understand that many readers may not be happy or thrilled by this story, but it's an important story about survival, allowing someone to step in and help when it seems easier to just give up and let go. The story of Gabriel and Cam will stay with me for a long, long time.

As I started the review, if abuse is a trigger for you, this might not be the book for you. But, if you can, take a deep breath, grab this book and let RJ take you into an amazing story.

*Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie by Signal Boost Promotions for my reading pleasure in hopes of an unbiased opinion, a review was not a requirement.*

RJ Scott's Gabriel is Book 2 of the Legacy Ranch series, a spin-off from her Texas series. The Legacy Ranch series is not an easy series to read. It has a lot of abuse and healing is more the focus than love and HEA. And this book had a lot of abuse, a lot of sexual, emotional and physical abuse and was hard to read at times. I loved the Texas series and was heartbroken by these abused men that became a part of that story. I struggled with the first book in this series, Kyle, because of the abuse in the book, and this one was just as difficult. Gabriel could probably be read as a standalone without any issues. Very little of this story took place on Legacy Ranch, and there wasn't a lot of interaction with characters from the previous books so I don't think just jumping in with this story will be a problem. But, I think the Texas series is so fantastic you should start at the beginning and read it, then you'll have the horrific backgrounds leading into the Legacy Ranch series.

After the death of his mother as a young boy, Gabriel suffered horrific abuse at the hands of the men that ran the ranch he was living on. When he finally made his escape, he traded one abusive situation for another. Except this one was with a master manipulator that convinced Gabriel that everything that happened was his fault and was necessary. Gabriel is very much an abuse victim. The man who "rescued" Gabriel from a life on the streets became Gabriel's pimp but was able to manipulate Gabriel into believing it was his choice and what he wanted. Gabriel meets Cameron when he's hired to be Cam's date for the night. Cameron is almost completely blind and runs a hotel his family owns. He's come to accept his blindness and is very successful at business. He's not successful when it comes to men or finding love. When he needs a date to an engagement party, he hires Gabriel. Before long, Cameron is hiring Gabriel to come watch movies with him, or to just hang out. Cameron falls for Gabriel, but Gabriel is not at a place to see that love, let alone accept it. When Gabriel needs help, he runs to Cameron who helps him get away from his situation.

Reading a story in the mindset of an abuse victim is difficult. It was really hard for me not to judge Gabriel for the decisions he made, especially when he was so accepting of the abuse he received, made excuses for it and refused to leave the situation even when provided assistance. But, that's what makes the abusers so successful, they have full control over their victims and can control their thoughts and actions even when they're not around. But, again, that's what makes this story so hard to read. I enjoyed Cameron, but didn't really feel like I got to know him as well as I did Gabriel.

As with the first book Kyle, this is not a romance/love story. This story is about a man finding a path to healing and having to learn how to not be a victim going forward. I did enjoy getting a little glimpse of Kyle and Jason's life in this story and seeing that they're building a life together. Very little of this story actually took place on Legacy Ranch, and I would have loved to have less abuse and more healing. I think it's very important to be aware of the trigger warnings in this story. This story does not just gloss over the abuse, but has very in detail, on page sexual, physical and emotional abuse. If this is something you cannot handle, you should steer clear of the story.

Gabriel, is the second installment of the Legacy Ranch Series by RJ Scott. Although this is a Legacy Ranch book, the bulk of this story takes place away from the ranch. I was disappointed at first but looking back and thinking of everything Gabriel experienced, I’m kind of happy the ranch does not bear any taint of what Gabriel has experienced.
Gabriel is one of those characters you just want to gather up in your arms and shield from the rest of the world. Damaged is the word that comes to mind whenever I think of Gabriel. He was abused his whole life and in a desperate attempt, he tries to escape it the one way he knows how: the sex trade. Lost and damaged Gabriel allows Stefan to abuse him in exchange for the false sense of security Stefan provides.I don’t want to give away too much of the story but I will share some things I think some readers should be aware of. Gabriel experiences some on page abuse that is heart breaking and pretty hard to read.

Then there’s Cam , Cam suffers abuse of a different sort. Cam’s family is a pack of greedy, mean vultures determined to shut out any spark of happiness in Cam’s life. Some of the things these horrible people did set my nerves on edge and I so wished I could pop them in their condescending faces a time or two. You’ll probably feel the same way too.

Both these guys are so badly mistreated, their experiences made me cringe. I was a little apprehensive about pairing these two together because in reality i never would have given how much damage both of them need to work through with a therapist. I found myself putting down the story a time or two not because the story wasn’t interesting but I needed something not quite so heavy and honestly, I did miss the Legacy Ranch setting. I think that’s all I’ll say for now. Adding anything else would possibly ruin your reading enjoyment of this story.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is a truly remarkable and special book - but definitely not an easy read. Gabriel is a man who has suffered a lot, and is still in the grips of a manipulative handler. Getting inside his head is an emotional experience; both incredibly moving and painful. Be prepared to try and persuade him to behave differently, again, and again.

We also have the chance to put ourselves in Cam's shoes, as he deals with his physical limitations, and much more significantly, navigates his way through the restrictions forced upon him by his family. Somehow he and Gabe forge an unexpected connection, which leads to an amazing love story.

There are some important characters who also make contributions to the richness of this story - Six being an obvious example (and I love how it is quietly slipped in that he too changes by the end of the story). Gabriel's understanding of Sophie's situation and prompting Cam to act is a lovely thread too.

Be sure to have plenty of tissues to hand, because this is certainly a book which will bring tears to the eye (for both sad and joyful reasons). And whilst I would recommend that you read Kyle first, so that you have some of the background of Legacy, and Gabriel's links with it, you could start here and then go back and read Kyle.

Thank you Ms Scott for an intense, life affirming and deeply romantic story.

Where to start! First of all, there are so many emotions and so much that happens in this book. Gabriel suffers more physical and emotional abuse than anyone should be able to handle. It goes to show how amazingly strong he is not to give up, even if he's afraid to get help. He tried to run once. He learned his lesson. What he went through tore my heart out. He needed an angel to save him, to show him his true worth, not what he always believed...that he was worth nothing.

Cameron Stafford needs to get his family off his back. They treat him like an invalid because he's nearly blind now, thanks to a degenerative disease. Cam suffers his own emotional abuse from his family. He's always told he can't handle his responsibilities. He's been most successful with his hotel, but his father still wants to take it from him. He hires Gabriel for the night to try and get everyone off his back. There's something more there, something that could be real. Can Cam bring Gabriel back to the light, or will it be too little, too late?

I'm loving this series so far. RJ Scott brings out so much emotion in these books. She knows how to handle sensitive situations and keep you reading, anxious to see what happens next. Without giving too much away, I will say I'm glad it wasn't just an ending where they fall in love and everything they've been through is healed. It made things much more realistic for me.

This second story in the ‘Legacy Ranch’ series, a spinoff of the ‘Texas, Campbell-Hayes’ books, is just as touching, disturbing, emotionally draining, nerve-rackingly suspenseful, and ultimately rewarding as the first. It is set mostly in Dallas, but the Legacy Ranch and the wonderful characters there, like Kyle and Jason from the first volume, play a crucial role. The focus of this novel is on two men trapped in darkness – one because he is almost blind and the other because he cannot get out of an abusive relationship, mainly because he can’t even see and admit to himself that what he faces is abuse of the worst kind.

Gabriel touched me on so many levels, I am having a hard time trying to express how much his story affected me. For the longest time, I was just angry on Gabriel’s behalf. The suffering he went through for years before the trial of his abusers was bad enough, but even afterward, Gabriel just can’t catch a break. And even though he has moments of clarity, when he admits that his “savior” is abusing him, his dependence is so deep and his self-confidence so low, that he keeps returning to a man who is really his pimp and almost kills him more than once. It takes a long, long time and a lot of suffering for Gabriel to take the step of asking Kyle for help and even then, he intends to return to his abuser as soon as his physical situation allows.

Cam has a whole lot of trouble all his own. He has been going blind since he was twelve, but he copes with the situation with determination and is very capable of taking care of himself. Not only that, he is running one of the family hotels, left to him by his grandfather, and it is the most profitable one in the entire family. His arrogant father and nasty brother-in-law don’t see it that way, and they intend to take the hotel from Cam ‘for his own good”. Grrrr! Cam ends up hiring Gabriel to “play” his boyfriend, just to get the idiots off his back, but there is clearly more between the two men than a business arrangement.

Gabriel and Cam sure have a hard time. Under attack from every angle, neither of them believes they are “fit” to be in a relationship with the other. Cam has money, but his ex tried to steal from him, so Cam is super wary – although his loyal friend and bodyguard is even more careful. Gabriel, while he is attracted to Cam despite telling himself he should not fall for a client, isn’t ready to be in a relationship before he deals with his past, his issues, and begins to accept and love himself. The realism and sensitivity with which the author has written this story is amazing, and it had me spellbound the entire time.

If you like deeply emotional stories about wounded men who need saving – from themselves as much as from others, if you believe that everyone deserves a second chance – and some more than others, and if you’re looking for a read that is as disturbing as it is realistic and might just make you cry, then you will probably love this novel as much as I do. It’s an excellent continuation of the series and worth every anxious moment of wondering how this harrowing story is ever going to end well. Simply fantastic!

**I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.**

Gabriel Reyes has had a hard life. His mother died when he was young, as naive child he was taken advantage of and he thought he was saved. He was doing the only thing he thought he was good at... sex. He was doing whatever he had to to keep Stefan happy. In return Stefan kept him doing booking and safe or so he thought.

After a "chance" meeting in Cameron's hotel elevator. Cameron Stafford hires Gabriel for one night to show is dysfunctional family that because he is going blind he isn't broken or a waste. After one night Cam realizes that Gabriel is more than just a sex worker.

Can two broken men make it work? Especially when one believes he never deserves to be happy or loved?

I loved how this story while involving Legacy Ranch it was more of Gabriel's journey to get there, than life on the ranch itself.

I can't wait to read what's next for Legacy Ranch.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Gabriel thinks he owes his life to his pimp/boyfriend Stefan who saved him from the streets, even through Stefan is abusing him. Gabriel meets hotel owner Cam, when Cam hires him to be his date at a family function. Cam is sick of his family giving him a hard time for being single and treating him like is incapable because he is blind.

The relationship between Gabriel and Cam develops as Cam deals with his family who threaten to take away his business and while Gabriel struggles to deal with his the reality of his abuse with the help of Kyle and the Legacy Ranch.

At times I found the situation with Cam's family to be a little contrived. Overall though this is a good story and I enjoyed watching our heroes struggle and push past the difficulties in their lives to find love.

This one broke my heart more than once....Gabriel is another victim of the Bar Five and oh boy what he went through....Cam was a force of nature for Gabriel.....He had a lot to deal with as his family is not the best....His father and brother-in-law were horrible people, but he stood his ground along with his friend Six...This really is a great read but you will need tissues and i'm pretty sure the next one is gonna be harder to read.....But...Rj is nothing but amazing at putting you back together after breaking you apart x

This is an ARC. So, How to write a review without giving spoilers and I really don't want to repeat the plot lines.
So. This is a rollercoaster ride of edge of the seat anxiety, angst, anger, violence, emotional turmoil and love. So much love. I wanted to kill Stefan myself, just sayin! Gabe and Cam have their own extremely different issues. Six is a wonderful secondary character and its always special to get a brief visit with the Campbell-Hayes family.
I found myself seriously choked up at times and smiling foolishly at others, there is so much happening here and if you can get the time and the quiet its a one sitting read.

I received this ARC promising and giving an honest review/opinion.

Overall Trilogy 1st Re-Read Review 2018:
When RJ Scott wrote Liam's journey in Texas Christmas(#5) and the trial in Texas Fall(#6) where we first saw Kyle, Gabriel, and Daniel, I knew that when she wrote their stories they wouldn't be all unicorn and rainbows, they would be stories of hurt, abuse, with tons of angst. But I also knew that they would be stories of strength, overcoming the past, and happiness. Kyle, Gabriel, and Daniel are hard stories to read but they are stories worth reading, worth the tears, worth the heartache because at their core they are stories of rebuilding, finding one's self-worth, finding your place in the world, and discovering that no matter how evil the world has been it can also be pretty great. This is my first time re-reading this trilogy(okay I just re-read Kyle and Gabriel as Daniel was just released this year) and although it may not make my annual re-read list, it won't be the last time I re-visit the boys at Legacy Ranch.

Original Read August 2017:
Bloggers Note:
This is not an easy read, even for those who read Kyle: The First Legacy and those who know the back story of Hank Castille's victims from Liam's story in Texas Christmas and Texas Fall, it will hurt your heart but it is also a tale of survival.

Gabriel Reyes has not had a truly happy or safe moment in life since his mother passed when he was little, he had his childhood and innocence robbed from him at the hands of a evil man and life has not improved since escaping Hank's horrid grasp. Cameron Stafford has money and privilege but even that could not save his sight but he hasn't let it defeat him. When Cam and Gabriel's life meet, its safe to say nothing will ever be the same for either of them or those closest to them. But will it be enough to heal Gabriel's soul?

Gabriel crawled into my heart from page one. I won't go into everything he suffers either from his past or at the hands or voice of Stefan but I will say it is not pretty. His self-doubts verge on self-hate and who can blame him after everything he's survived, even if he doesn't see it as surviving("suffered" would probably be a more accurate term but I never liked using that word in cases like this because to me "suffered" represents no coming back from). He has a chance at recovery with Legacy Ranch but Stefan has made sure that Gabriel doesn't see it as a second chance at life. I just want to wrap Gabriel in layers of bubble wrap or one of those soft eggshell mattresses often used in hospitals to protect him from others and himself, but its not possible and unfortunately sometimes we have to reach the bottom step before we can turn that corner that leads back up.

Now onto Cameron. I know that this is Gabriel's story but there is one thing that really brought Cam alive for me. Cam hires Gabe to be his plus one to his sister's engagement party and while there we see how his family views Cam due to his blindness as does Gabe, which I'll come to in a minute. As for Cam's family, well it stuck with me because my grandfather was in a wheelchair by the time I was born because of his MS and my mother has had endless health issues, luckily no one in our family really saw either Mom or her dad the way Cam is seen but you can imagine I spent/spend a lot of time in hospitals and clinics and I see the reactions like the Stafford's to patients too often. I loved how RJ Scott dealt with this, even with this being Gabe's story she still managed to express Cam's issues as well, their pain may not be on the same level but Cam's problems are no less important.

I said I'd return to Gabe in regard to the engagement party, here it is: I was intrigued with the way Gabe managed to see what was happening to Cam not to mention how he saw the pain in Cam's sister's eyes as the same thing he saw in the mirror every day even if he could not see a way out for himself. That scene right there told me that there was still tons of hope for Gabe to recover and replace his self-hate with love.

As thrilled as I am that Legacy is considered a spin-off of RJ's brilliant series Texas(my absolute favorite series I have ever read and re-read) it is also an amazingly heartfelt journey that will leave you in tears more often than smiles but in the end it is a true journey of survival and recovery of one's soul. Love may not always be the heart's healer but it always opens one's eyes to the possibilities of life. Gabriel is a perfect example of Pandora's Box, when Pandora unleashed all the horrors to the world there was one thing left at the bottom of the box: HOPE.

This is the 2nd book in the spin off from the Texas series books. It's a bit darker read but doesn't go to in depth on the abuse to make some readers uncomfortable.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This is another gritty and dramatic addition to the ‘Legacy’ series. Wealthy Cameron meets Gabriel when he hires him as an escort for a family event. Cam’s controlling and manipulative family provides the drama for this story while Gabriel’s inability to escape from a life of prostitution and domestic abuse provides the grit.

Seems almost as trapped and lonely as Gabriel at the start of this story. Even though he is wealthy and successful, his blindness keeps him separate and he has to fight his manipulative and controlling family to retain his independence. As much as Cam attempts to save Gabriel, I loved the way that Gabriel also made Cam stronger.

If Cameron has always been privileged, Gabriel hasn’t known anything except cruelty and hardship. In comparison to things he has experienced in the past, prostitution and a boyfriend/pimp who only sometimes hurts him doesn’t seem too bad. Gabriel continued to surprise me in this story. As Cam’s escort, he is smooth, confident and perceptive. Later, we see him fearful and broken and we also see him as strong and defiant.

Cam and Gabriel don’t spend a whole lot of time together in this story. Theirs is a relatively low heat story and the most romantic moments are those stolen from Cam’s glamourous high pressure life and Gabriel’s grim reality when the men spend time doing ordinary things together. The connection between Cam and Gabriel is sweet and they are gentle with each other. I’m glad that most of the ‘saving’ of Gabriel is done by other characters because it allows Cam and Gabriel to remain equals and to work as partners.

The ‘Legacy’ series is a spinoff of the ‘Texas’ series, further expanding the soap opera style world of Riley and Jack Campbell-Hayes with a little more grit than the original series. I think I’ve read most of the previous books but there were still several references to names and events that I struggled to recollect. This book might be able to stand alone but I think readers should at least start at the beginning of the ‘Legacy’ books.

Well, I’ve reached the end (so far) of the Texas and Legacy series. There is more to come but I’ll have to wait for the next book. I have book hangover and I will miss the characters of the ranches (and Dallas) more than you can imagine.
We’ll have to go back a little bit to a time when Riley and Jack Hayes-Campbell rescued some young men from incredible abuse on a ranch in South Texas. There was a trial and the perpetrator went to jail but these men, barely out of boyhood, have suffered for life from what was done to them.
Gabriel has serious psychological problems that result in thoughts of suicide and the idea that he doesn’t deserve anything better than continued abuse. He is a sex worker and believes that is the best he will ever do in life.
Cam is a wealthy man who owns a hotel, has a bodyguard called Six, and is slowly going blind. In fact he is nearly completely blind in the beginning of this story. He has a past with a man who stole from him and made him not able to trust anyone. His family defines dysfunctional. When Cam hires Gabriel as a temporary companion Cam’s bodyguard is very wary of that situation. His job, after all, is to protect Cam at all costs.
Gabriel has a hard time admitting everything that has happened to him and what his pimp means to him. Cam has a hard time keeping his family off his back about what he can do. Together, can they overcome all of the odds against them? It’s a challenging story. Be sure to read the introduction before diving into the book. For me, it was an exciting tale and one I won’t forget soon. I’m so eager for Daniel’s story. And I really, really hope there will be more about Six! He’s one of my all time favorite characters.

Though a Legacy Ranch book about 65% of the story tales place off the ranch in Dallas. Gabriel was badly abused at the 5 Bar Ranch and after giving evidence wound up on the streets where he was picked up by Stephan who professes to love and care for him but in reality is a controlilling abusive pimp.

Cam is a successful businessman who runs one of his families hotels - he also happens to be blind. With a big family party coming up Cam hires Gabriel to act as his boyfriend - only to discover there is real feeling between them.

But Gabriel is in danger and the Legacy provides a safe place for him to recover.

This is quite a darker in subject matter than the other stories but I found the story lacked depth and this is not really a subject that can be glossed over and made fluffy. So this didn't really work entirely for me.

ARC provided by the publisher through Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words in exchange for an impartial review.

Reviewer’s Note:
Be warned—this one is heavy—emotionally heavy—with topics of abuse, past and present, physical and emotional. Gabriel is one very damaged man.

When Gabriel escaped from Hank Castille’s ranch years ago, he made his way to Dallas where he was “rescued” by a man named Stefan. At first, Gabriel was so grateful to have someone who cared about him, he thought he was in love with the man. But Stefan set him straight on that—though Stefan cared about him, he also cared how Gabriel could benefit him and though Gabriel never seems to see the truth in the relationship, it’s evident to readers that Stefan is his pimp and is an emotional and physical abuser. But Stefan wraps his abuse in pretty words and gives Gabriel a place to stay, clothes, and a paycheck. It’s earning this paycheck that brings him into the Stafford Hotel where the owner, Cameron Stafford, needs an escort for a family event.

Cameron is blind, well, almost blind, but his eyesight is deteriorating rapidly and he’s fighting a power struggle with his hotel magnate father and his sister’s husband, both of whom want a part of the successful Dallas hotel. Cameron owns it outright, however, thanks to the savvy of his deceased grandfather who made sure no one could absorb it back into the rest of the company. Cameron is gay, single, and blind—three strikes against him per his father and brother-in-law. The single is because his last douchebag boyfriend took advantage of his blindness and stole from him, so he hires an escort to accompany him to his other sister’s engagement party. To do this, he relies heavily on his bodyguard, known only as Six, and against Six’s judgment, he moves forward with his plan.

The story encompasses a year in their lives, a year in which the two men come to mean something to each other and Gabriel starts to see some of Stefan’s actions as less than humane. (Getting choked until one blacks out will do that to a person.) The kindness he thought he felt from Stefan is tarnished by the reality, especially when he starts to pay attention to calls from one of the other young men who was abused at Hank Castille’s hands—a young man named Kyle who now manages the Legacy Ranch for Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes. The ranch is intended as a safe place for the men who were abused by Hank and others like him, and for horses who are rescued from abusive situations. Each client of the ranch is assigned a horse and together the therapeutic environment serves as a positive in their recovery. They have a place for Gabriel whenever he’s ready for it—no strings attached.

Gabriel almost waits too long to seek help, but when he does, it’s Cam and Six who help get him to the ranch, where over time, the much-needed healing begins to take place.

This is a love story, but it’s somewhat a secondary plotline. The focus is more on the abusive situations, the reality faced by so many young men, the difficulty of asking for help, and the very real need for trust to begin to lay any foundation for a long-term commitment.

I am enjoying this series, and though this was a difficult story to read in places, it was very necessary to take each step along the way. As the story ends, there’s been no quick fix, however, there is a very strong hope for the future for the two men others might consider damaged or disabled but they know are stronger than ever with each other.

I highly recommend this one, especially for readers who like hurt-comfort stories, but pay attention to the author’s warnings. She’s very clear on the graphic scenes included, but my favorite sentence in the forward is where she very eloquently states: “I have a spectrum of readers and I know that some may consider this to be an on-page trigger, and it was important to me that I let you know.”

A great story; keep tissues handy.

This has been a difficult review to write. I actually finished reading Gabriel's story over a week ago but just didn't know what to say, or how to say it. This is a fantastic book, and it brought up all kinds of emotions – just the way I like when I read – but some of the things that happened to Gabriel Reyes in his past were hard to read about. Never fear, though, RJ Scott always delivers a happy ending and the one for this book is no exception.

Gabriel is the second book in RJ's Legacy series. You can probably enjoy Gabriel without reading Kyle, first but I strongly suggest reading them in order. This series is a spin-off of RJ's popular Texas series. Most of that series was already published when I began reading her books and I haven't read it yet. I mention this because I want you to know that the Legacy series can be enjoyed without reading the Texas series. But, because I always prefer to read series in order, I do wish that I had read it first so I would have more background on the Double D Ranch and the characters from that series who make appearances in this spin-off.

The book's blurb is great and lets you know the important stuff about this story. What it doesn't say is how emotional this book will probably make you feel. Gabriel escaped from a horrible situation only to end up in a relationship with a very controlling person that isn't healthy. Cameron Stafford, while wealthy and owning and managing his own hotel, has issues with his controlling family. His father doesn't think he's capable of running the hotel just because he's nearly blind.

Cameron's family adds interesting elements to this book and I loved how the epilogue wrapped up a lot of the things that happened along the way to Gabriel and Cameron's HEA.

The way Gabriel and Cameron meet has kind of a Pretty Woman feel to it and I happen to love that movie. But this story has a lot more grit to it than Pretty Woman (a lot more sex, too, lol). I hope that Gabriel and Cameron will capture your heart like they did mine.

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Just as with the first book in this series, Gabriel-The Second Legacy also runs very high on the angst factor. Gabriel has had a difficult life, losing his mother at a young age, then suffering through abuse at the hands of those who should have been taking care of him. Even after escaping that, he just goes from one bad situation to another—though he is so beat down that he actually rationalizes his current situation.

Cam has grown up with whatever he needed from a monetary standpoint, but as his eyesight fails as he gets older, there are those around him who think that makes him incapable of doing things himself anymore—in particular his own father and brother-in-law. When he meets Gabriel, that prejudice is missing and the two form a friendship. I was very impressed by how well Cam was able to cope on his own, and the mechanisms he had in place to help him live his life as naturally as possible. His best friend/security Six was a favorite character of mine in this story with how he cared for and helped Cam.

To me, I actually didn’t feel a lot of depth to Cam and Gabriel’s relationship. This may be due to the fact that a lot on the on-page time was spent in their own individual situations instead of with each other. It was difficult for me to feel the connection between them, though I did feel a lot of sadness for each of their circumstances. Also, the time on the ranch did not take up a lot of the story—the majority was spent in the city dealing with their respective issues with family and those who supposedly cared for each of them.

Gabriel was a 3.5-star read for me, primarily due to the lack of connection between Cam and Gabriel. Although we are told about their relationship through the epilogue, not actually experiencing it throughout the story affected my rating. This is still a good fit with the series, and there is definitely a lot of emotion and plenty of difficult scenes depicting the abuse Gabriel went through—both past and present. This story is meant for readers 18+ for adult language, sexual content, and scenes of physical and emotional abuse.

This second book in the Legacy Series features Cam and Gabriel. Right from the start, I was pulled into the story and it had me on the edge of my seat until the end. RJ Scott evoked so many emotions with this story. My heart broke for both men. Both Cam and Gabriel are strong yet vulnerable characters. On the surface, they have nothing in common but there is an instant connection. RJ has a knack of bringing the characters to life. Gabriel shows a lot of confidence when he is doing his job. When at home with his ‘savior’, however, he becomes a totally different man. I so wanted to kick this so-called friend for doing what he did to Gabriel. It is easier to see the wrongdoings done to others than it is to see it done to yourself. At long last Gabriel is strong enough to reach out for help.
Although they come from different stations in life Cam is convinced Gabriel is the man for him. Fighting for Gabriel also means he is fighting for himself. He stands up to his family and his best friend to help Gabriel any way he can. He even sets him free to let him find his peace.
This story is all about the character development, the growth in their personalities. The author describes in grueling detail what physical and emotional abuse can do to a person. At the same time, she shows that there is hope and that one can rise above it and become a stronger man who is worth loving.
This is the second installment in the Legacy Series but can be read as a stand-alone. However, I recommend reading the first book, Kyle, as well as you’ll get a better feeling for all the characters.

This book is different from most of RJ Scott’s books. It deals with a subject matter that is a trigger for some people. She wrote about dealing with abuse, sexual and otherwise. About feelings of self-worth or the lack there of. The need to find value in yourself and did so with sensitivity. She also wrote about accepting that sometimes we all need help. That sometimes to be a stronger person you need to accept the help offered.
In some ways, this was a hard book to read. The abuse of Gabriel, first by Hank at the Bar 5 Ranch and then his pimp Stefan is difficult to handle. You want to cry for what he’s gone through. And you pull for him to get out of his own mind and grab the help that Kyle and Legacy Ranch can give him. And to accept that Cam wants to help him.
Cam has his own struggles as well. Going blind just adds to the flaws that are unacceptable to his family. Having been taken advantage of before makes it hard for him to trust again. So, when he needs a plus one, an escort seems reasonable to him. But the more time he spends with Gabriel, the more he sees the real person behind the impersonal sex.
This book was an emotional, sometimes tear filled but beautiful journey to the relationship that blooms between Gabriel and Cam.
Although this is book two in the series and you do get glimpse of the Legacy, Campbell-Hayes clan, it can stand alone. Reading book one does give you better insight to the backstory of Gabriel and Kyle.

I received an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review.
