She didn’t have a place to belong. He thought he was happy by his lonesome. When she stumbled into his life, everything changed.
Brigid Belham had always done what was expected. She worked for her father in his accounting office and managed his home. When he married, she knew it was her time to move on, and traveled to Jubilee Springs to meet a prospective husband. Her ‘best laid plan’ goes horribly awry, leaving her stranded. Caught in a storm of both rain and tumultuous emotions she ends up lost in the woods, until she’s found by a mountain man grumpier than a bear. All he wants to do is send her away. What if she wants to stay?
Most people in Jubilee Springs know him as a hermit, a mountain man who hardly talks and likes company even less. His parents named him Livingstone Quinn, but unlike his namesake, he doesn’t want to explore. He doesn’t want to discover. He just wants his peace and quiet, all by his lonesome with his animals on his homestead. When Brigid literally falls at his feet, he keeps telling her she needs to leave, but shocks himself when he keeps finding reasons for her to stay. What will he do when he runs out of excuses?
In the whole wide world they managed to find each other. Would they walk away from their happiness, or would they bring their love home to roost?
I really enjoyed this short, sweet western romance! If you've ever felt out of place, or felt like you didn't fit in, this is a story you'll enjoy. The title fits hilariously with parts of the book too!
There were a few laugh out loud moments in the book.
I love characters that I can relate to. Ms. Torres' characters are just that. No matter if you can relate personally or know someone like one of her characters, you will find yourself getting mad, sad, and having some heart-warming awwwwwws.
I also like learning something when I read. I know what you are thinking, "it's fiction chick!" However, what I learned had enhanced my life. What is it? Vocabulary Speech. While I was reading this book, I admit, I had to lookup about 8 separate words. This dear fellow book lover, is AWESOME! I learned different ways of saying things.
At the end of this book, I finally got while it was called HOME TO ROOST. I must say, well chosen title. I laughed at that as well.
I highly recommend this book. (I know it's in a series, but you can read this alone.) I look forward to reading more my this talented and eloquent author,
What am amazingly sweet romantic novel. Written in a time gone by when some women had no other choice than to become Mail Order Brides. Brigid Belham left the life she knew for the unknown, hoping against hope that marriage would give her a continued purpose. But when her soon to be betrothed has a difference of opinion with her, she tries her best to find a better solution. Livingstone Quinn is a man of few words who likes his privacy and quiet more than his need for company. But when a little bird becomes stranded after a storm, what is he to do but to help. Together they find just what they were looking for, even though they themselves didn't know it. Well written, with just the right amount of push and pull that makes it an enjoyable read. This well paced book will find a wonderful spot on anyone's shelf! Recommend to romance lovers and those who enjoy the HEA! Well Done! 🌺
A mail order bride, an arrogant attorney, a town unwilling to hire a woman, a hermit mountain man amid the town people of Jubilee Spring make this a fantastic story. Brigid Belham arrives in Jubilee Springs as a mail order mail. The prospective groom is an attorney but when introduced, he rejects her due to her height. With nowhere to go, Brigid tries to get a clerk job in town. She has experience from helping her father with his accounts. But alas no one will hire a woman. Taking a hike into the woods, she gets lost. She gets caught in a huge rainstorm. Livingstone Quinn, a mountain loving man lives alone in the forest. He keeps to himself. He goes into town to deliver eggs but does so before the town is awake to avoid people contact. He discovers Brigid in the swollen stream area. She is wet, muddy and discombobulated. He takes her into his home to get her dry and to keep her safe. She needs to stay there until the stream drops to a safe level to cross. An undeniable chemistry develops between Brigid and Quinn complicating the situation. Life, love and happiness are on the line. What will happen between the two after Brigid returns to town?? This is a well written, well described historical fictional western story. You will feel as you are right in the town, feel Brigid's rejection by the attorney, her let down at not being able to secure a position. You will hear the rushing water of the stream, feel the rain soaking Brigid' clothing, feel the mud caking on her. You will meet Down (the intimidating rooster) with his flock of hens and Dandy, the goat. The reader becomes part of the story. This is a quick, enjoyable read that everyone will enjoy!!!! I volunteered to read this book. Thanks to the author for the opportunity. My opinion is my own.
Enjoyed. Very sweet and moving. When Brigid came to Jubilee Springs it was to meet her husband. It was he was cruel to her. She felt she didn't belong. A unforeseen incident takes place, and she meets one Mr. Quinn..what happens next is interesting to say the least.
Each story in the Sweethearts of Jubilee Springs series will read as a standalone and are a collaboration by multiple authors. The town of Jubilee Springs started as a mining town in Colorado, but it was soon realized that it lacked women. To keep happy workers, they decide to use a Mail Order Bride service to bring in mail order brides. Not all men went this route.
In this story, the town’s attorney, Appleton Winslet, sends off for his own bride with high requirements wanting a lady of looks, refinement, and to have manners and social skills. When he meets his intended, Brigid Bellham, he is insulting, rude, and accuses her of deceit and tells her that he would not marry her.
The plot will have Brigid Bellham arriving in the town of Jubilee Springs by train and not to be met by her intended groom, but Mr. Howard of the boarding house. When Appleton Winslet does come to see her the next day, he is rude and insulting and withdraws his offer of marriage. Now Brigid is without a home, no way to return to her father’s home, and needing a job to support herself. When her last option of working keeping books at the mine is declined, she will take a walk in the forest to try and clear her head and make plans, become lost, get caught in a heavy rainstorm, and literally fall at the feet of Livingstone Quinn.
Livingstone is a recluse, living far from town with his animals. He delivers his eggs before dawn and returns to his quite self-made world. He is exceptionally large, and most people are frightened by his size When he rescues Brigid, she is a tall woman, and doesn’t act afraid of him. Always the gentlemen, he will give her the use of the house and take the barn. Caught by a swollen river, with nothing but work and time, they will get to know each other, and before long, Brigid will be making friends with his animals and learning how to do chores like gathering eggs.
What happens when the river recedes, and he can safely return her back to town? A public confrontation will attempt to sully her reputation and now how will she ever be able to remain in Jubilee Springs? The story is a sweet, clean historical mail order bride book that offers a glimpse of attitudes about a woman working a job in a man’s world, and even wearing men’s clothing. With the help of farm yard animals can two people who come from different lifestyles find their happily ever after?
All Brigid Belham wants is to get married, so she can feel as though she belongs. However, the man she's supposed to meet at Jubilee Springs isn't overly pleased with her, and so she discovers she needs a way to support herself. Yet, the moment she meets Livingstone Quinn; a man she prefers to call by his last name, she finds her life changing for the better. Will Brigid find her happy ever after with a man she never expected to meet, or will Livingstone let the woman he's falling in love with get away?
What an extremely entertaining, fast-paced, captivating read Ms. Torres has penned in this story, which had me riveted from start to finish due to the main characters back stories and their interactions, as Brigid shows Quinn that letting someone into his life is worth it; the interactions the main characters have with the animals the hero has on his property that left me amused; and the obstacles these two face on their journey to happy ever after, since Brigid spending alone time with Quinn raises eyebrows.
The way this story started had me sympathizing with the heroine, as she doesn't feel like she belongs anywhere now that her father is re-married. Will Jubilee Springs be a good place for her to set down roots? Furthermore, the heroine was strong and brave in how she handled everything she goes through from rejection of a man to judgment from people when it comes to the time she's been spending with Quinn. I also liked how determined she was to support herself when her plans for her future get disrupted. While the hero, he rather likes being alone, and yet, being around Brigid makes he rethink that decision, because she's the best person to come into his life. I also liked how kind and caring he was towards the heroine and how protective he was of her, especially in the moment where she didn't deserve the animosity she was receiving from a certain someone.
Overall, Ms. Torres has penned a wonderfully sweet read in this book where the main characters were fantastic, the secondary characters have me looking forward to reading more books in the Sweethearts of Jubilee Springs series, and the ending had me charmed by the hero's determination to achieve happy ever after with the heroine. No way was he going to let her get away. I would recommend Home to Roost by Reina Torres, if you enjoy sweet western romances or books by authors Caroline Clemmons, Kathleen Ball, Vivi Holt and Kit Morgan.
HOME TO ROOST by Reina Torres is a delightful Clean Western Historical Romance. While #7, in the SWEETHEARTS OF JUBILEE SPRINGS, it can be read as a stand alone. This series is a collaboration of multiple authors.
The town of Jubilee Springs started as a mining town in Bower, Colorado, but women were scarce, so the town's attorney ordered a mail order bride.
A Novella, approximately 142 pages, but those pages are packed full of a forever kind of love, which he found unacceptable and pushed her aside. Now she has no where to go, what will she do? Despair and emotions are her only friends.
This is the journey of Brigid Belham, who gets caught in a rain storm and Livingstone Quinn, a hermit who only wishes for peace and quiet. An arrogant attorney, a mail order bride, a hermit, and a town that will not hire a women, makes HOME TO ROOST some exciting reading. I was glued to the pages of Brigid and Livingstone's story, as they make sense of their feelings, face Brigid's possible ruined reputation, her acceptance in town and the danger that lurks. HOME TO ROOST is a story of longing to belong somewhere, finding love, peace, acceptance and a place to call home.
Well written with engaging and an interesting cast of characters. Steady paced. The plot was well thought out and excuted. Although, a Novella, and a quick read, Ms. Torres manages to reward readers with a fantastic read, where nothings left out of a remarkable story of love, acceptance, healing, and finding a HEA. Oh and the animals added a perfect mix in the story. You couldn't help but laugh at their antics. Brigid and Livingston are a unique couple but find they have much in common. Once again, Ms. Torres has written a story that will capture your heart and cause you to fly away to another time, place where women were not valued except as property, to some men anyway, but not all. HOME TO ROOST is a no brainer, it's a must read. Fans of clean, sweet, historical western romance are sure to enjoy HOME TO ROOST. If you're not a fan of sweet romance, give it a try, I think your enjoy your time in Bower, Colorado and Jubilee Springs. I look forward to going back soon. As the saying goes "ya'll come back now". I intend to, soon! Well done!!
I was so easily caught up in Brigid and Quinn’s story. HOME TO ROOST is among my favorite Western Historical Romance titles by Reina Torres – so far. She writes in other genres as well, and I do love her style of writing… but this one is a unique kind of special that will stay in my head for quite a while.
The cover description gives you all the details you’d need to pick this one up, but let me tell you about the emotional draw of this couple’s story. Quinn just wants to be left alone on his homestead with his animals and making the trip into Bower a few days a week to deliver his goods. He’s content as he is, and if there are lonely moments well he deals by reminding himself how much he hates crowds and just… most people. Brigid made the desperate decision to become a mail order bride. She had no idea as she traveled across the country to meet her future that her intended groom would be making a final decision based on how she looked once they met. Arrogant jerk.
You can feel Brigid’s frustration, her anger, her total confusion as to why someone would do such a thing. It turns out that a near miss disaster leads her right to where she was supposed to be all along.
I loved Quinn and Birdie together. They easily complete each other and feel natural together almost from the start of their adventure. I got quite a few chuckles from the antics of Quinn’s animals, especially one rooster and a baby goat… oh and the wedding attendees as well — you’ll understand when you read that scene. I had a blast with HOME TO ROOST and would not hesitate to recommend it to any Western Historical Reader who loves a good romance, a few smiles, likable secondary characters, the villain to loathe for his actions and to feel at home in a book’s location.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
Brigid Belhoun come to Jubilee Springs as a mail order bride to Appleton Winslet, a lawyer. But when he realizes that she is taller them him he calls the wedding off! Not being able to go back home, Brigid goes around town looking for work. You would think this would be easy as she worked for her Father in his accounting office. But after being turned down, she goes for a walk and ends up lost in the woods. When a storm come things take a turn for the worse. Lucky for her she stumbles upon Livingstone Quinn who moved out of town when the town started building up too much. "Quinn" as he likes to be called is happy with his own company. Brigid and Quinn have alot in common as neither one of them feel like they fit in. Brigid or "Birdie" as Quinn start to call her would be very happy to stay right where she is with the quiet, gentle man that she is starting to have feeling for along with "Dandy" the goat and even "Down" the rooster and his crew of hens. But when Quinn mistake Brigid not answering his very important question can these two get their HEA. Come visit Jubilee Springs and meet the charming people that live there, most of them. Heartwarming, clean, funny and sweet, Reina Torres tells a story that keeps you turning the pages. Through she excel at writing contemporary, and paranormal, her historical romance is what she does best. I received an ARC of Home to Roost.
I adore all of the sweet love stories that take place in Jubilee Springs, and Brigid's story strikes a chord with me as I was always tall for my age when I was growing up. And Livingstone is her match in so many ways. He doesn't mind that she's tall because there are so many other characteristics he finds intriguing about her. She's beautiful, brilliant and has a sensitive heart. But she also has a strength within her that he finds fascinating. When they are thrown together due to unforeseen circumstances, not only do they begin to see each other in a different light, but they realize they have much more in common than they originally thought. And no matter how innocent their time together has been spent, there are those who would make it their place to ruin her reputation. What happens when Livingstone is faced with a life without her in it?
I've said it before, and I'll continue to say it. I love all of this author's books, but there is something so special about her sweet Westerns that takes me on a journey in time and makes me wish I could sojourn there for a little longer. She had an acute knowledge of the era and pours so much of her heart into each of these stories, that I can imagine even the minutest details of each scene. As always, I am looking forward to the next adventure in Jubilee Springs.
This is a sweet and clean story with no sex and no cursing. If you avoid those things, you have nothing to worry about with this book.
Having read all of her books I can say that Reina Torres is a master at writing male characters who are the perfect gentleman. Livingstone made me sigh happily and swoon with his kindness and caring for Brigid but also with the way that he never discounted her abilities to help him out around the homestead just because she's a woman – that is way sexy. And Brigid was the perfect mix of strong and vulnerable. While she required saving at first, she had no qualms about getting her hands dirty and doing what needed to be done and I LOVED that.
Also, the title is absolutely perfect. I grinned so hard when I got to the end of the book and it all fit together. So perfect!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a sweet western romance or just anyone who loves a sweet and chaste love story. You seriously cannot go wrong with a Reina Torres book.
Sometimes we forget how long women have been fighting to be recognized for what they can do rather than being defined by what they cannot. We're still being told you're way too smart and female and who do you think you are trying to get a position working with numbers! Brigid Belham needed to leave her father's home when he brought home a bride. She opted to become a mail order bride but her intended was intimidated by her height and her education. She just wanted a life with someone who understood her and accepted her as she is. She gets caught in a huge rain storm and literally falls into the life and home of Livingstone Quinn. He is a determined semi-hermit who delivers eggs at o dark thirty to avoid speaking to anyone. The book is well written with laughter and angst with the addition of watching Brigid, a born and raised city girl, begin to interact with his chickens and baby goat. I will be looking for more books from Reina Torres who seems to get better with each book she writes. A fun western romance/historical novel you'll really enjoy!
My goodness I love these sweet historical romances by Reina Torres. It's a genre I don't read all that often anymore, but Torres is making me question that. Her character, Brigid, is such and interesting woman. She's been put in the tenuous position of having to become a mail-order bride. She's unusual in a way that makes the man she has come to marry kick her to the curb. However, a man that most people in Jubilee Springs think of as unusual in his own rights finds only characteristics in her that are appealing to him. The development of their relationship is innocent, but oh so fun to witness. I loved both Brigid and Quinn, but I loved them more together. That the gruff loner was more than willing to let Brigid cuddle next to him was heartwarming. She brought out the best in him. And that ending! Oh, my, the ending! Love has come home to roost (with the chickens)!
This is a great story with really wonderful characters. I loved the hero and heroine who both had their own problems but this author really created an awesome story that really had each helping each other even if they didn’t know they were doing it. This story has adventure beyond what I could even imagine. It was a great adventure for the heroine and amazing she came out of it without any problems, well sort of. The hero turns out to be so different than the rest of the town sees him so this story is just really good. I have read of few of this authors stories and I have really loved them. She really creates amazing characters background and the hero and heroine. She weaves a really good clean and amazing story. I highly recommend this story.
I was offered this story as an ARC and I willingly accepted it. This is my own honest review.
Home To Roost is another fantastic read by Reina Torres! I enjoyed reading Brigid's story and her journey to become a bride. Her journey begins on a train to Jubilee Springs headed to meet her groom as she is a mail order bride. Things don't work out and Brigid is left to figure out what to do next. While walking in the woods she gets lost and runs into Livingstone Quinn. Will Quinn be the one to give Brigid her HEA? This is a well written story with great well developed characters. It's a heartwarming sweet romance full of drama, humor and great farm animals. I can't wait to read the net book by this author she is one of the best out there. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
I really enjoyed this story and the characters. They were both looking for something that they didn't even realize that they wanted or needed.
Brigid wanted a place to call her own after coming to town as a mail order bride. She was faced with rejection and was at her wits end as to how to move on.
Livingstone was happy living out in the woods alone with his animals. He decided that he just wasn't a people person. He was content to deliver his eggs in town before sunrise with very little interaction with the town folks.
A big rainstorm, mud and a overflowing creek leads these two together. I enjoyed seeing them interact with one another. They each brought out the best in the other person. I also loved their flock of feathered friends. This was a sweet and heartwarming story.
This is a story that takes place in Jubilee Springs when mail order brides were very popular. Quinn is a main that most would call a hermit or a mountain man. He lived in the woods outside of town. He only spoke to a chosen few when he came into town. Brigid was an educated fine young lady. She had high expectation of landing an upstanding husband. What she didn't expect is to get strained in the dark in the middle of a torrential down pour. This is a tale of innocents, unattainable expectations and the realization that you should always follow your own path not the one others pick for you. Highly recommend.
Brigid Belham comes to marry a lawyer, but what she finds is a man whose actions toward her ought to be against the law. Since her father has remarried she feels she cannot return to what was her home and although she is quite skilled with numbers and has worked outside the home, she finds herself unemployable. Livingston Quinn is a loner. He sales eggs and lives off the land. When Mr. Howard tells him about mail order brides, he is quite appalled. When Brigid appears on his land quite lost and apologetic in the midst of a storm his world is tossed. A great read and laugh out loud funny at the end of chapter 8.
Home to Roost is an endearing romance about two unlikely people.
Brigid Belham comes to Jubilee Springs to be a mail order bride to a lawyer. When she meets the lawyer, he insults her and breaks off the engagement. Brigid does not want to return home so she sets off to try to get a job. She gets lost but is rescued by Livingstone Quinn.
Livingstone Quinn is a man who prefers to keep to himself away from town. He has always been happy alone but when he meets Brigid, he is no longer satisfied with living alone. The two quickly realize they care deeply for one another which sets us up for an adorable ending.
This is the first book written by this author that I’ve read, but it certainly won’t be the last! I fell in love with Quinn and “Birdie” immediately and couldn’t put the book down. This is a clean, beautiful story of how life can go from heart-breaking to heart-warming in the blink of an eye. I watched the seed of love as it was planted and witnessed it’s growth to maturity. It’s entertaining from start to finish. Also, it is very well written with no typos which are typical in most books I read on my Kindle. Thank you Ms Torres, for writing this beautiful story.
When you just don't fit in at home, you're way too smart and female, you just want a life with someone who understands you and accepts you as you are, a forever. Brigid and Quinn's story is amazing and simply sensationally well written with laughter, angst, critter comedy, wonderful neighbors, community, feistiness, love, and a HEA. I LOVED IT! Ms. Torres gets better with each book she writes and this is fantastic!!! A great historical novel you'll love! I received an ARC and am voluntarily reviewing the story!
Reina Torres sure has a way with words. Home to Roost is a fast read, but it sure packs a punch. I loved the story of Brigid Belham and Livingstone Quinn. Brigid has come to Jubilee Springs as the mail order bride of Appleton Winslet. He's a lawyer and thinks he's all that, so when he meets Brigid, he tells her she will not do as his bride. She can't return to Omaha and her father and his new wife. She tries to get a job in town, but of course, no one will hire her. Now, here's where the story really gets Good! No spoilers, so one-click your copy and read this wonderful read.
Great book. This is a very fast read that will make you smile and laugh.
Brigid is a mail order bride. Unfortunately, when she gets to the town, her betrothed does not wish to marry her. Brigid likes the town and thinks she could live here, if she can find a job. Wanting to take a nice walk and think, Brigid becomes lost. She is found by Quinn who happens to be a man who lives by himself and prefers to be alone.
This story made me laugh, made me angry, and made me very happy in the end. You will enjoy this book.
Neither one expected the other to be anything else than who they are Well written and well described that places you right in the story. You will feel Brigid's rejection and despair. There’s an undeniable chemistry between the main characters, Brigid and Quinn. Along with the wonderful characters, you meet barn animals with quite the personality. Reina Torres certainly has a gift for writing sweet, western historical romances and soon has you vested in the characters and town. Her book titles also match the story perfectly. Looking forward to reading more from this town.
Brigid is a mail order bride that doesn't quite work out, very unique. When she is looking for a job she ends up lost in the woods when it is raining bad. She is found by Quinn who lives way out in the woods. She stays at his place while waiting for the water to go down. Loved the story of Brigid and Quinn and his chicken and goats. I was given an opportunity to read an advanced copy of the book. Great book, definitely recommend it.
I loved this book! Livingstone Quinn reminded me so much of Grizzly Adams (my favourite T.V. character when I was a kid)! He is such a gentle, kind person, and I couldn't help but want the best for him. Brigid is also a sweet person and the two are perfect for each other. Reina writes so well and I could just picture in my mind each of these characters. If you're looking for a sweet, uplifting read, this is a book for you.
I'm loving the historical stories Reina Torres is writing and this one was no different.
Beautiful characters with amazing back stories that make them feel like old friends. I love how they were not written as perfect people but as people perfect for one another.
I am going to look for my own mountain man if Quinn is anything to go by.
I loved this so much!! Brigid is looking for a home, Quinn is very content by himself. She literally falls into his life, changing everything. I loved both of these characters so very much. There is so much packed into this fast read, it was perfect!
Lovely story filled with humor. The animals interactions with the characters make it a fun read. Glad to read a story with love and humor and not a lot of underlying trauma or distraction.
