I'm always up for reading a biography of Jane Austen so I was happy to try this intriguing new approach to biographies.
Biographic Austen took several points about Jane Austen and turned them into graphics that offered short bursts of info and details. It was not chronological and some of the facts it shared ranged from life facts, comparisons with contemporaries and other writers, and even the Janeite legacy including the movie adaptions. I thought it was a good quick way to make Austen familiar to a new crowd.
However, one niggle. Either there were a handful of typos or the author got at least three important facts confused. There were places where names of father, brothers, details in one of the books that were errors. And, those were just the glaring ones that I noticed. Made me feel a bit of doubt about other facts I wasn't personally familiar with. Not a good thing in a biography of this sort that is meant for a person new to the subject of the book.
But, that said, it took facts and made them somewhat fun and in easily digestable small chunks. Quickly read and doesn't even need to be read front to back, but the reader can flip through and stop on pages of interest.
So, I loved the concept and also the subject matter, but would wish that facts were all carefully checked over. Good book for a newbie with not really any new details for a full-fledged Janeite.

Ce livre est beau, instructif, ludique, pour faire bref, indispensable. Il vous présente Jane Austen en quatre chapitres principaux : sa vie, son monde, son oeuvre, son héritage et ce, à l'aide de diverses infographies et illustrations. L'objet en lui-même est soigné jusque dans les moindres détails et il suffit de soulever la couverture pour s'en rendre compte.
Malgré ces évidentes qualités, le contenu aurait pu ne pas être à la hauteur. D'ailleurs, ce n'est pas vraiment une biographie, il y a, par exemple, très peu d'éléments sur sa famille. Mais l'auteur m'a eu dès le premier encadré avec cette simple phrase : "On pourrait lui coller une étiquette de romancière romantique (...) mais ce serait terriblement réducteur." Alléluia !! Sophie Collins explique également que les différents niveaux de lecture sont nombreux dans les différents romans de Jane Austen et que chacun y trouve ce qu'il est venu y chercher, un point de vue que je défends depuis longtemps. Enfin, quand elle dit qu'on ne sait pas de quoi elle est morte et présente un tableau avec les différentes hypothèses et leur probabilité, je suis définitivement conquise. Nous voilà avec, entre les mains, un ouvrage qui ne se contente pas de répéter les bêtises déjà relayées partout ailleurs. Bon, d'accord, je suis peut-être un peu de parti pris parce que nos visions sont très similaires, d'ailleurs certaines rubriques correspondent parfaitement à des articles que j'ai écrit sur ce blog au fil des années : "à quoi ressemble Jane", "d'abominables romans", "le bon la brute et le truand"... Et dire que les maisons d'édition pensent que je n'ai rien d'intéressant à dire...
Bon, bien sûr, je n'ai rien découvert de nouveau sur Jane elle-même mais ce livre ne se contente pas de ça. Il commence par replacer le contexte mondial et explore de nombreux sujets intéressants. J'ai appris plus d'une chose qui éclaireront mes futures lectures austeniennes. Je pense par exemple à la page consacrée au matériel pour écrire et la recette de l'encre, ou encore celles sur les fortunes, les danses, les repas, les jeux de cartes... Son passage sur les voitures est particulièrement amusant.
Évidemment, il y a aussi quelques petits ratés : une très mauvaise traduction d'un des meilleurs bons mots de Jane Austen, la mention à diverses reprises d'un journal intime alors qu'un tel document n'existe pas... J'ai aussi regretté que l'on passe si rapidement sur les adaptations et quid des austeneries ? Mais, honnêtement, ça reste de l'ordre du détail.
Je finirais avec ses quelques mots de Sophie Collins qui interprète une nouvelle fois parfaitement le message de Jane Austen : "Se marier pour de l'argent est moralement répréhensible, mais se marier à un homme désargenté est tout à fait stupide."

Jane Austen wrote novels we all know that. She was also a prolific letter writer.
She spent many many hours as did a lot of ladies of her day.
Cassandra Austen, her sister destroyed many letters after her death.
The gentle author of novels could sometimes be very vocal on paper about her neighbours and relations, her sister was probably aiming to keep her reputation infact.
So where and what did she write with?
Jane had a lap desk. A small portable desk that acted as a place to store writing materials and provided a gentle sloping surface to write on, it was a commonplace object and used also by gentlemen!
Her Pens, Jane used writing quills made from goose feathers. Complaints about the quills were often commonplace in letters and journals.
Paper - Austen made her own mini books by folding several sheets of paper together, but also wrote on ready made books, quarto-sized, purchased from a stationer.
In wealthier circles, letters and notes might be written on an elegant paper.
In Pride and Prejudice, Miss Bingley writes on a sheet of elegant, little, hot pressed paper. This would have been made from rag fiber, and heated before being pressed flat - giving it a smooth surface, easy to write on.
I love this Biographic Austen book - lots of interesting facts to read and mull over!

Cela fait un moment que j'ai commencé à acheter et lire les œuvres de Jane Austen - il m'en manque encore quelques-uns mais je les aurai tous :) . J'ai toujours trouvé qu'elle savaient très bien dépeindre la culture de l'époque, la vie des gens dans la capitale ou à la campagne. Les relations entre voisins...
Ce qui m'a plu dès le départ dans cet ouvrage est la façon dont sont amené les sujets avec plein de couleurs, de dessins pour illustrer les propos. Cela donne un petit coup de peps que l'on ne trouve pas dans la majorité des biographies. J'ai aimé les comparaisons faites avec d'autres auteurs de son époque, le parcours semé d’embûches pour être édité en plus d'être une femme. On se rend vraiment compte que Jane Austen connait sa véritable célébrité au 20 ème et 21 ème siècle, bien que de son temps, elle sut toucher un certain public.
Mais ce n'est pas tout, je savais qu'elle était morte jeune, mais pas mal de pans de sa vie m'étaient inconnus et j'ai été ravie de découvrir quelques anecdotes sur son quotidien.
Pour conclure, cet ouvrage de par son originalité de présentation de la biographie m'a séduite. Il est attractif, divertissant et informatif. Je l'ai trouvé intéressant et bien construit.

Written in a fun, light, humorous way, this informational text (series) gives the casual reader (or a large Austen fan), a glimpse into the life and times of Jane Austen. Never dedicating too much time to one area, readers can explore the time period she lived in, her childhood, her journey to writing, and her enduring legacy. The graphics are colorful and relevant (though some are easier to read and digest than others).

I loved this Biophic. Jane's life was full of turns and emotional events just like in her novels, the fact that she became famous after her death is a shame, I wished she had the chance to see how much everyone loved her writing.
One of my favorites things from this Biophic is that it has facts I loved, such as the duration of the ball dances while Jane was alive, I had no idea they lasted as long as the candles in the chandeliers did.

The infographics make for an enjoyable light read. There’s just the right balance of facts and graphical elements — illustrations, colours, icons and statistics to capture your attention.

I bought this while I was in Edinburgh with Kelly earlier this year – because I can never resist anything Austen-related! This book is part of a series of biographies that explores "great lives in graphic form." It summarizes the life and work of the subject and uses infographics to convey the information. You can look inside here. I really enjoyed the visual aspect, which also made it a quick read. It didn't contain anything particularly new, but it was still fun to flip through. I'd be most likely to recommend it to Austen fans for the art or to someone who just wants a high-level look at her life. I So Liked It.

yes, i am counting this as a book, even though it is a collection of graphics and drawings.
but i really enjoyed reading it! it taught me a lot about life in regency england and the way that austen and her characters would have lived. the perfect way to get ready for the jane austen module this semester.
realistically, the perfect way would be to reread the novels lol. i'm slowly making progress on that front

This was great. It makes good short-attention-span reading, and the pages are visually appealing. I'm going to leave it lying around to see if the kids will read it.
