Ok, I started reading Bess Hart's novels and novellas as basically the next thing on the shelf during a very long train journey and was quickly disillusioned, as the writing was very variable and the storylines seemed really mechanic at times. Doing a bit of research I found out, that there is a good reason for this. These are not straight romances written for the commercial market but the result of a book club studying romances for some time and then creating what they perceived as 'blueprint' novels of the genre.
These novels reflect what the readers thought are the defining elements of different types of Romance novels, and as such they are a really interesting insight into a genre and its readership.
This is Navy Seal genre. So, we need Wounded hero with wounded past, heroine who like rough guys and is in position to patch him up. As it has military background the language can be very direct.
I read this before realising that this is a project, and though this was one of the better ones, but the resolution came too fast.
