FROM POPULAR GAY ROMANCE AUTHOR C F WHITE

Book two in the Responsible Adult serial

Love isn't always responsible.

After Micky O’Neill is remanded in custody for breaching his court order, his already tempestuous relationship with Dan Peters is tested to the limits.

Having to battle their way through a court case that could end with Micky in jail, social workers breaking up the family home and the return of Micky’s deadbeat father, it seems everything is set to destroy their relationship before it even has the chance to start.

With such high stakes involved, not just for Micky but for once-burned, twice-shy Dan, they both have to learn that falling in love isn’t always responsible.

Brought up in a relatively small town in Hertfordshire, C F White managed to do what most other residents try to do and fail—leave.

She eventually settled for pie and mash, cockles and winkles and a bit of Knees Up Mother Brown to live in the East End of London; securing a job and creating a life, a home and a family.

She writes gritty British based stories about imperfect men falling in love against the odds and has been accused of sprinkling a bit of humour into them from time to time too.

But starting to drag a little. I feel like the main conflicts were resolved in the first book. A lot of the conflicts are driven by external events and pressures which is not my favorite thing to read. The writer is really good at drawing worlds and characters that feel authentic, which I do appreciate.

After the way I was pulled in to the first book of this series, Misdemeanor, and the way it left me hanging at the end…I was jumping at the chance to read Hard Time to see what came next. CF White did not disappoint, and I was catapulted head-on into a story of constant tension and worry, but also smiles, heat, and so much love. Yes, this story moves along determinedly at its own pace, not letting a single thing be revealed until the author was good and ready for it; but I was entirely absorbed in every single page—even as I was trying to read faster to get to what every reader wants to know…what is Micky’s future?

The journey there will take you through more of Micky and Dan’s relationship development as they both continue to battle their individual insecurities, and they each discover just how committed the other is to their success. And you know it’s not going to be easy for them with Micky’s freedom hanging in the balance, so that does place a bit of suspense on everything as his fate is drawn out throughout much of the story. Plus there’s still the lingering issue of Micky’s father—just in case you forgot he’s not quite out of the picture after the first book.

Micky and Dan do what they do best—get through their daily lives, doing as best they can and forming an ever closer relationship as they become thoroughly entwined in each other’s lives. Their feelings are blatantly obvious, even if they each may come to doubt them at different points. And in between it all is the wonderful, eternally happy Flynn. The lengths that both Micky and Dan will go to so Flynn’s life will be better are unlimited, and it is because of this on Micky’s part that Dan can see past who Micky used to be, and the incredibly selfless man he’s become.

The supporting characters do an amazing job here in Hard Time, from Dan’s parents Cathy and Frank with their unconditional support of their son as well as Micky and Flynn, to Micky’s friend Jason and Dan’s roommate and friend Tamsin, to Micky and Dan’s fellow employees. They all provide a strong framework both men can count on for help, love, and laughs when it counts the most…and they do it without being overly cheesy or boring. I was also very glad to see how Dougie’s character was portrayed in this story over the first one; this time around he may still be a little goofy and oblivious, but he’s a really great guy through it all.

The story was pretty emotional, and by the end I confess I did have some tears making themselves known. Between the constant tension and the emotional ups and downs, Hard Time had me captured from start to finish as I read it through in a single sitting. You definitely need to read Misdemeanor before starting Hard Time to appreciate exactly where both Micky and Dan came from and how meaningful that makes this story by the end. And while you won’t get a crazy cliffhanger this time around, there’s a promise at the end of more to come—something I am REALLY looking forward to!

5 stars for Hard Time, and it’s a story I highly recommend to any M/M romance fan (just please read Misdemeanor first!). This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content (mmm…yes, Micky and Dan can be quite the sexy pair!). And you probably will want some tissues on hand…just sayin’…

When I read the first book, Misdemeanor, I fell in love with little Flynn so quickly and so much. Flynn melts the hardest of hearts with just a sweet little smile. But this book, we really see a difference in Micky and I loved every minute of it. This is a good book and a good series. I was happy to see, also, that Dougie's character wasn't written so harshly.

Micky is stuck in jail for the moment, but his only worry is for his little brother, Flynn. It was for Flynn he was here again. He is so sick of nasty, bigoted and bullying people. Flynn is so innocent and it's not fair that he gets picked on by snot nosed little kids. Or their parents. But Micky wasn't thinking of the restraining order against him. He just wanted whoever hurt Flynn to hurt. Flynn is the most important thing to him and he will stop at nothing to protect him. But being in jail, he's stuck. It seems like the world is out to get him. But through a favor of Dan’s dad, Frank, he's released. And it's time to make a change. He was hoping to run away and start over for little Flynn but Dan and his family showed him different. It's time to grow up and be a man. At every turn, something seems to happen. His loss of a job, his deadbeat father coming back, but through unwavering and love support of Dan and his family and his best friend, Jason, he's learned how to deal with life a better way. And he's learned there are people who really do care and love him. Now if he can let go and be the man he knows he needs to be for everyone.

This book shows Micky in such a different light. It was amazing to see such a transformation. The past tried to come up and devour him, make him go back to the old ways, but Dan and Flynn showed him a different way. A different life. I know, I know. I cry at everything, but to see the strides in Micky's transformation. Just beautiful. And of course, we can't forget little Flynn. He has made these books for me. I can just picture his little body smiling hugely. His tussled hair and messed up glasses. The epitome of innocence and youth. And all I want to do is hug him so tight and bubble him away from harm. I'd be like Micky and beating the crap out of people. It was beautiful, too, to see the change in Dan. Taking a risk and loving someone that is a risk is hard as hell. Knowing they could just be using you. Or will never love you in return. But that's the chance with love. And Dan jumped in with both feet. Everyone commented on the change in him. He's not so careful and predictable anymore. He sees life in a different way. He and Micky both do now.

When life beats you constantly down, you have a choice to make. Let it beat you, be the bad guy. Or stand up and make a change. Making a change is never easy. Especially when others are involved. But nothing will ever change or possibly become better if we don't try. I love these books. I hope you will too. I can't wait to see little Flynn again.

We left Mickey in book 1(Misdemeanor) facing jail time after a breach of court order. Now we find them living with that possible future over their heads. Will Mickey and Dan be able to survive the ordeal and come out stronger or will it be too much?

I found myself enjoying Hard Time even more than the first book which is not something I am often able to say, sequels by definition are often inferior because the characters are already established and not entirely new to the reader so it will lack what I like to call the anticipation factor. This is not true in this case. I loved how even though this is fiction and most of the scenarios are not your every day plot devices, the author meshes these with Mickey and Dan's typical relationship challenges. Of course how the issues that are not the norm being balanced with that threat of jail is really beautiful to witness.

I won't give away too much as I'm not a spoiler kind of gal but I will say, you won't be disappointed. If you loved Misdemeanor than you are in for a real treat with Hard Time and if you are like me and found a few moments of frustration in book one then you are going to be blown away with book number two. From beginning to end the author had me sucked in and I knew there was just no way I would be able to function properly before reaching that last page. CF White is definitely an author I look forward to exploring.

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

Another great book in this series!

I read Hard Time when it was re-released back in August. Like the first book in this trilogy, I knew then that the only thing that might make me love it more was if the author had Piers Ryman do the audiobook (he has performed several of her other books). This is another wonderful audio performance by Piers Ryman; he and CF White make a great team! There’s nothing more that I could say other than what I wrote after reading the eBook so I’m going to paste portions of that review below (with some necessary changes).

Hard Time is the second book in the Responsible Adult series and you really need to read book one, Misdemeanor before you read it. While Hard Time doesn’t end on as much of a cliffhanger as book one did, the story won’t be complete until Reformed comes out in September.

Just like with book one, once I started reading this, I couldn’t put it down. I don’t really know where to start with my review. I’m afraid of saying too much and giving things away. Micky is in a bit of a pickle and in danger of losing custody of Flynn. Help comes from an unexpected place and it’s hard for Micky to accept it.

Micky and Flynn’s father shows up and creates a lot of problems. Dan has a bit of a confrontation with the manager of the grocery store where he works. Flynn has a melt-down that even Micky has trouble bringing him out of.

Hard Time tore me up the same way that Misdemeanor did but it also left me with hope that things will keep getting better for Micky and Flynn. Flynn is just so precious and how much Micky loves him really comes through in CF White’s writing.

Reading about Flynn’s condition has helped me to look at misbehaving kids differently. I really can’t imagine what it would be like to be out in public and have a child do the things that Flynn does in this book. I know that before reading this, I probably wouldn’t have been very understanding. I am humbled by the things I’ve learned from reading MM romance and how what I’ve learned has helped me to become a better person.

The love and support that Dan gives to Micky, even when other people chastise him for it, is something that everyone should have but real life often isn’t like that. Reading stories with characters like Micky and Flynn help me realize that my life really is pretty good.

Hard Time took me for another emotional ride and I can’t wait to listen to the final book when it comes out at the end of this month.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

After finishing the first volume of this trilogy, I was blown away by this story and couldn't wait to listen to "Hard Times".
Like the first volume, this book is incredibly well written and I'm not usually one to get teary-eyed quickly while reading or listening to an audio book, but this sequel was very emotional and I actually had tears in my eyes at some points.

Mickey has a criminal past and is bad at keeping his temper in check, which gets him into trouble a time or two. It sounds like a bad boy, but Mickey has such a big heart and loves his brother Flynn more than anything. You can't help but love Mickey. And you love Flynn even more, his special needs brother who brings some light to this dark story with his sunny disposition. But how will the two of them get through it when Flynn is taken away from Mickey? And then Mickey's father shows up, who is up to no good.

The author has written the protagonists in an authentic and complex way and the story could really have happened like this. All protagonists have their strengths and weaknesses and not every decision Mickey makes is happy. And if you think that fate was already cruel to the brothers, it always goes one step worse. What a bleeding heart I had! But it was nice to see Dan stand by Mickey and love him despite all the difficulties.

The character development was great again in this book, as was the rest of the story. There were always twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. And yet I suffered and hoped along with Mickey and Dan. Dan is also a great character with parents who stand by him. It's nice to see that despite everything, Mickey can count on Dan.
I received a copy of the audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The audiobook was narrated by Pierce Ryman and he did a really good job. He brought the characters to life and he conveyed the emotions very well - and there were some emotional moments. For me, the narrator is the perfect choice for this story! It was an absolute pleasure to listen to Pierce Ryman.
And now I'm impatiently waiting for volume 3 and hoping so much that Mickey, Flynn and Dan get their happy ending.

Highly recommended!

From the offset, Hard Time brings all the drama, the angst, the humour, the love and the reader is immersed once more. The blossoming relationship of the main characters is hindered by Micky’s court case and the possible devastation that his brother, his world, could be taken from him. This novel also delves deeper into Micky’s turbulent younger years and the presence of his father is truly unnerving. Hard Time develops quickly and a constant, rising and often fist-balling tension burns painfully in the backdrop. Eager to forget the struggles and concentrate on the happiness our two main characters deserve, the reader soon discovers that C.F. White doesn’t give away such contentment so easily. Not yet, anyway.

Hard Time is full of the real-life, heart-warming narrative that one has come to expect from C. F. White. Its grittiness latches onto you like any good drama should. Yet, the love and romance growing between Micky and Dan shines brighter with each chapter. C. F White’s talent for developing characters beyond what is written seems effortless and proves invaluable. Regardless of first glances, the ‘opposites attract’ card hasn’t been played here, but rather perfectly, the two main characters, the two men, are wonderfully alike.

It isn’t Micky’s macho façade (not to mention that tattoo) that flutters in Dan’s belly, nor is it Dan’s dimples that fuels Micky’s lust. It is much simpler. These strong-willed and determined men are so powerfully drawn to each other, not because they are servants to their logic, but because they are governed by their hearts. And their hearts, through all that they have endured in the past, solely crave one another.

The vacancy left by the cliff-hanger of Misdemeanor is jubilantly forgiven as the characters, our friends, return to our lives amidst the drama and tribulations. The old gang are back; the diehard best friends, the awkward work colleagues, the adorable little brother who melts your heart, and the addition of Dan’s seemingly perfect family make this novel feel like a reunion. Hard Time is extremely difficult to put down. A must-read.

This book continues Micky and Dan’s story (if you haven’t read the first yet, definitely start there). Here, we find Micky fighting to overcome the legacy of the past, to do the best he can for his brother and to make things work with Dan, who means more to him than he’s always comfortable admitting. Watching him struggle to find a way to have the life he wants and be the person he wants to be, as a brother and protector for Flynn and a partner to Dan, without giving up, is moving and rewarding, and I’m glad I read this installment in their story.

Micky and Ben continue to build their relationship in this 2nd book of the ‘Responsible Adult’ series. This is not to say that there’s smooth sailing yet, but their happily-ever-after is within reach.

Book 2 begins very soon after the unnecessary cliffhanger of Book 1 (not letting that go). Micky is in danger of incarceration and, therefore, losing younger brother Flynn. He’s still in his I-must-handle-it-myself mode, but Dan, with the added support of Dan’s family, is slowly showing Micky there are people that can be relied on for assistance. Will Micky get everything he’s never believed he could have?

I love both Dan and Micky and their continuing struggles, but the secondary characters have their own appeal. CF White makes these characters matter to the story--almost as integrally as Micky and Dan themselves. I love Dan’s parents, who accept Micky without judging him on his past. Jason, Micky’s best friend, has a smart head on his shoulders. I even like the coworkers at the market in which both Dan and Micky work. They all hold a piece to getting and keeping Dan and Micky together.

The steamy scenes deserve a mention. I’m a hopeless romantic, so when steamy bits are combined with the characters’ emotions at that stage, I get swoony. White incorporates these scenes into the story so perfectly they don’t feel gratuitous in any way. An added plus for me is a scene that occurs late in the book in which White delivers a scenario that is an all-around favorite of mine in the M/M romance genre. I won’t spoil it, but I mention it because I find it particularly pivotal to the story. It’s full of emotion and beautifully written.

The ending to this book did not raise my cliffhanger hackles quite as much as Book 1’s did. There are definitely element left to explore in Book 3, but it doesn’t end anywhere near as abruptly as the previous ending. There’s a more settled feeling to where things have ended up with Micky and Dan. I would define it as a happy-for-now ending.

With each successive book (I’m up to 3) of Piers Ryman’s narration, I seem to love each performance more. This book brings out the deep emotions as written by White.

I was given a complementary copy of this audiobook, at my request, and am now leaving a voluntary review.

Highly recommended.

Continuing on from Misdemeanour this book can’t be read as a standalone. Mickey, the reforming bad boy, hit rock bottom when arrested for breaching a restraining order (justifiably, I thought). At the beginning of this book, Mickey gets out of prison but he’s lost his brother, Flynn when Social Services finally caught up with them.
By a stroke of luck, Dan’s parents are foster carers, albeit retired and they are able to take Flynn, at least temporarily.
Things look up for a while, but it’s not for Mickey to have things too easy. His father makes a comeback and steals everything he owns. In an attempt to get them back, Mickey finds himself in trouble again.
The author has an amazing ability to lull you into a cosy sense of false security, before dumping a bucket of “Oh my God no” on your head. Mickey is tested at every turn and cosy domestic scenes are interspersed with much darker events. At no time are you allowed to get too comfortable and I love this.
Throughout all his trials, Dan remains a steady influence but Mickey still finds it impossible to say “I love you”, and his lack of commitment is the one thing most likely to blow them apart. That and his temper.
The workings, and attitudes of social services and the courts are accurately, if somewhat optimistically represented and add to the gritty realism that pervades the books. While everything has a satisfactory outcome, it certainly wasn’t an easy one.
As usual, Flynn provides light relief with his pure innocence and truly beautiful personality. It was heart-breaking to see the author deal with the kind of bigotry children with disabilities far too often face.
When the first book ended in a cliffhanger, this one most certainly does not. The upbeat tone and sense of real hope for the future is as beautiful as the scenery and I felt as if I was coming home at last after a long, hard journey.
These two books were not easy to read, but the rewards were enormous. If you want your heartstrings tugged, torn and played like a finely tuned instrument then these are the books for you. You won’t be sorry.

No saggy middle (an audio review)

When I finished the first book in the series, I was left with a true cliffhanger. I was like, uh, gimme gimme gimme the next book. NOW! I got it and listened voraciously, basically in a day. I wanted to know how Flynn was. Sure, finding out Micky’s fate was good, but Flynn was the one I had to know about. Flynn is Micky’s younger disabled brother who Micky has been caring for since the suicide of their mother. Micky is barely into adulthood himself and is carrying a ton of responsibility. When he’s brought in for questioning by the police, obviously someone was going to have to step up and take care of Flynn. I admit it – I panicked.

I should’ve known better. In a nice twist, the situation was resolved to my satisfaction, and the panic receded.

As to the rest of the book…I enjoyed it. Micky and Dan are complete opposites. Dan holds down a job as a manager in a grocery store. His job is to keep the chaos to a minimum. Given some of the people he manages, this often proves to be a challenge.

Micky is trying to complete his high school. He wants to better himself so he can provide for his brother. But with caretaking and working at the grocery store, life’s a challenge. Add it mates who may or may not have his best interests at heart, and ex-so-called-girlfriends to boot, and life is a mess. Oh, and his father. The deadbeat Micky wishes would just stay gone.

Somehow, though, the men make it work. They start planning for a future. A future that will conclude in the third book and I’m off there now…

Quick note – I adore Piers Ryman. He and Ms. White fit together beautifully and I love that he always delivers such amazing performances.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

I’ll start by telling you I reviewed the first book in this series, Misdemeanor, back in June. I gave it 3.5 stars because I didn’t feel I connected with Dan and Mickey like I wanted. However, Hard Time gave me what I was missing, and I was so pleased.

The chemistry between Mickey and Dad grew exponentially between Misdemeanor and Hard Time. I think part of it is C.F. White growing as an author. It was obvious to me her style was smoother and more detailed in this book. There were points in the story that were quite depressing. Normally, I will skim that sort of thing, but there was definitely no skimming here. This wasn’t heartbreak for heartbreak’s sake. The reader needs to know the person Mickey used to be so they could believe in (and have hope for) the man he wants to be.

The same thing happens with Dan. He’s still managing the grocery store, but as he falls deeper for Mickey, he begins to think about building a better life. He becomes more confident and he’s no longer a doormat. He’s able to stand up to his loser of an ex-boyfriend and his boss (a mega jerk if I’ve ever seen one). He’s not afraid to show his love for Mickey and Flynn to his family and best friend, and his love and affection for Flynn becomes more obvious, especially in the wake of Mickey informing him that he and Flynn are a package deal. Flynn will always be there, way beyond his reaching adulthood.

This book had promise but, it fell short. Though I enjoyed the first one, this one didn’t live up to my expectations. I did enjoy that the story delved deeper into Mickeys battle for custody and his fight to be allowed to raise Flynn but, I found it detoured a bit from the development of Mickey and Dan’s relationship.

In the first book you’re aware that Mickey and Dan are more serious than “casual hookups” but the back and forth and Mickeys insistent to hold back got tiresome quick. The court case was an interesting arc and it had me holding my breath, hoping for redemption for Mickey. The involvement of the side characters and Mickeys “coming out” was done moderately tasteful but, though I tried to read past it in Book 1, Dougies character bothered me most. The author does a wonderful job of representing Flynn’s disability yet proceeds to represent Dougie in the worst way. His character is given no redemption and his obesity was used as an ill “fool-proof” comedic affect. It was distasteful in Book 1 and I’d hoped by Book 2 thAt there’d be some redemption but, I was left disappointed.

The ending was sweet and I found it tied all the bows neatly... so neatly that I don’t see the need for a third book. Series where each instalment is just an excuse to add unnecessary drama in a relationship are my biggest pet peeves and Book 3 seems to fall in that trap. I’m happy with how this book ended and I’m not looking to read another 200+ pages about Mickey and Dan going backwards and forwards again.

I finished Misdemeanour (book 1) and started reading this straight away. I really liked the first book but this book is even better.
Micky and Dan's relationship is more fully formed although they are both still struggling with the past and lack of communication on both sides seems to be an ongoing issue. Flynn is still a joy but it is the way that Micky and Dan's relationship is formed around Flynn and his care and needs which makes this story so beautiful. We really see Micky struggle with trying to get everything right and he takes tentative steps to trust and let others in all the time trying to fight the system which has very firmly made up it's mind about him.
Through out the story we have the side characters, Dan's parents are just wonderful and as accepting of Micky and Dan's relationship as they are of Flynn. Jason, Micky's best friend, turns out to be a better person than I thought he was going to be and it is nice to realise that there is love and support there for Micky and Flynn from not only Dan but his family and their friends as well
There are twists and turns in this book which I didn't see coming and a happy-ish ending although I'm sure there will be more drama for the boys in book 3. This book is full of suspense, drama, life, love and tears.
I have so much love for Micky, for Dan, for Flynn and for the whole book

Oh those poor men did so much fighting.
Internally with themselves, with words and actions, but also with fists.

There were glimpses of how Micky could be if he fought for himself and worked on himself in the first book. There is so much more here now.
He fought for Flynn. He went to court and showed that he changed.
He fought for Dan and their relationship. He overcame so much internalized homophobia in this book. It made me really happy! I even got some of his points why he wouldn’t be out. But in fiction I really don’t want the characters to stay in the closet for being afraid of getting beaten up.
And Micky also fought for himself. He stood up to his dad. He stood up for himself in court. He got through college.

Dan also grew more in the book. Even though people around him try to make him doubt, maybe for the first time in life he knew what he wanted. He wanted Micky and a family with him. He wanted the job he dreamed of.
I really liked his dad and his way of being there for him, and also for Micky. I thought maybe that went in a different direction but no, he turned out great!

I’m also quite surprised how much I like Flynn. I usually don’t like the children, but he grew on me!

And I really hope the next book will be all sunshine and roses or I will be pissed…

This series continues its gritty journey through the life of Micky O’Neill in the second book in the series: Hard Time. The first book ended on a bit of a cliff-hanger and the second installment picks up where it left off.
Micky is in trouble again… and again, it's through no fault of his own. His fierceness when it comes to protecting his little brother is heart wrenching and inspiring at the same time.
The series continues the theme of struggling to overcome the past. Things get tough for Micky again as his father returns to the picture. The juxtaposition of seeing his partner Dan with Flynn… and seeing the way his father simply thinks of Flynn as a source of income is heartbreaking.
This book is about Micky trying to redeem himself in the eyes of the law. He desperately. Needs people to understand that he's doing his best, he's struggling to create a better future for himself and Flynn.
Dan isn't always sure where he fits in Micky and Flynn's family. He adores Flynn and loves spending time with the kid, and Micky… Micky is the one for Dan regardless of if the younger man knows that. But past relationships haven't been kind to Micky and his friends don't want him taking chances that may result in him dealing with another broken heart.
This book brings a few of the plot points to a satisfying conclusion and the story progresses. Is that all? No, there is another book in the series. As Dan and Micky begin the next phase of their journey together, they need to learn how to "live" rather than "survive".

Once again, I’m wowed by the romance and the grit of this rollercoaster series! Mickey’s disabled brother, Flynn, has been attacked by another student and Mickey is charged with breaching his court order when he bails up the student’s hateful father. As Mickey faces the police, court and possible prison system again, he’ll need every bit of his boyfriend Dan’s love and family support. My heart went out to Mickey as we watch him struggle to escape the wrong side of the tracks and his past criminal record. The social issues here really made me think: Mickey is a book being unfairly judged and sentenced on his tatty cover. What I loved most is Mickey’s deepening relationship with Dan and his journey of gay self-acceptance - their bond and their chemistry was so heartwarming! Audio narrator Piers Ryman really excels himself on this series, the impressive way he channels Mickey’s rough tones, Flynn’s touching innocence and meltdowns, and Dan’s middle class family, let alone the words in Welsh and Mickey’s slurring alcoholic father - he’s such a talent!!

I wasn't expecting to be enamored with this story. I picked the first book up on a bit of a whim. The first book was good, but I kept listening because I can relate to Micky. Like Micky, I would do almost anything to protect a younger sibling.

Life in a small town can be frustrating when everyone thinks they know you based on who your family is or what you did as a kid. Every little idiosyncracy you have is analyzed and judged. C F White does a wonderful job of showing how a small town community can be both a hindrance and helpful.

Dan and Micky have some very rocky moments in this story, but the connection between them is growing strong. Both Micky and Dan are gaining personal strength from their evolving relationship.

The narrator was spectacular. Piers Ryman does a wonderful job of creating voices that match the personality of the characters.

I am struggling to express how much this book impacted me. I shed more than a few tears. I listened to this book first, but I will also be reading just to experience the story again.

When I finished Misdemeanor there may have been a little cussing. Okay a lot of cussing. The cliffy had me going crazy waiting for the conclusion. Hard Time did not disappoint.

For all of Micky's confidence and bravado he may have the biggest heart of them all. The character development is realistic, you feel Micky's fear, vulnerability and most of all hope. Dan's frustration, passion and respect. Flynn's pure and absolute joy.

With a big dose of violence, a side of homophobia and a bunch of small town minds, Micky and Dan have to deal with real life all the while navigating their newfound relationship. While their communication leaves a bit to be desired at times it adds an intensity to their situation. Falling in love is never easy and damn do these two have to struggle. They both find support in expected and unexpected places.

Tender moments, funny bits, sexy times...it's a true rollercoaster ride of emotions. One that I loved. Throughout the story we get peeks of greatness for both Micky and Dan. Their potential is there, I'm thrilled they got their HEA.

Whew, what a ride! This book was easier on Micky and Dan, but that’s not to say it was easy. Poor Flynn, so traumatized and yet so sunny. He’s a darling.
Micky is my favorite character, though. He’s so damaged. He tries so very hard to take care of Flynn properly. He’s determined to put his old life and shortcomings behind him. The times he finally breaks down to let others see what’s inside are heartbreaking but so amazing.
Dan is a little harder to love. He’s a great guy, no doubt! He’s also doing everything he can to take care of Flynn. He fell head over heels for both Micky and Flynn so quickly.
The last couple of chapters were very satisfying. The guys all deserved them. I wish it had been easier on Flynn! Still, worth it.
I really enjoyed the story, and am going straight on to the third book now!

This story begins where Misdemeanor ends. Mickey is in jail, he has a criminal record and struggles with keeping his temper under control. He gives off the persona that he’s a bad boy but deep down he has a heart of gold and loves his brother Flynn unconditionally. He also has a deep love for Dan. Dan and his family are taking care of Mickey’s brother Flynn. The story follows Mickey’s character development and redeeming himself. I got the opportunity to listen to the audio version from the author. I loved the story sooo much, I had a hard time stopping it! Piers Ryman did a fantastic narration, he really brought the characters to life! The story was raw and gritty, well written, highly recommend. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. My review is solely based on my thoughts and opinions.

It’s not very often I’ll cry whilst reading a book but this one got me good!

Hard Time takes you on the ultimate roller coaster of emotions, there are great highs and major lows, just when you think things are going one way CF White comes in with the twists and turns.

This is another beautiful book in this series that delves deeper into Micky and Dan’s relationship, their development as a couple is fantastic and you feel everything they are going through.

The tension starts at the very beginning of this book and doesn’t really let up until the end, it’s heart wrenching at times but I could not put this book down.

I absolutely adore CF White’s writing, it’s so real and honest, gritty and in some places brutal but she is brilliant at writing the love and emotions in her characters.

Hard Time is Book 2 in the Responsible Adult series. This wonderfully written emotional book continues the story of Micky and Dan. As Micky is arrested, Flynn, Micky's younger brother, finds himself in the care of Dan's parents who are foster parents. This book really tugged on my heart strings as Micky tries to better himself, Dan stands up for himself, and Flynn finds a way to live under someone else's care. There was so much growth in these characters. I can't wait to see what book 3 will bring as Dan, Micky, and Flynn start their new life together. I definitely recommend this book and series.
Narrator Piers Ryman does another amazing job in the series. He really has a way of bringing this story to life.

**Audiobook ARC Review**

This continuation from the first was riveting. I found myself a lot of times stopping what I was doing to make sure I was all in and not missing the drama unfolding between Mickey and Dan. It seems like Mickey can't get a break for nothing and the only person who believes and loves him is Dan and of course sweet Flynn. Things do eventually work out for the guys and the ending was nice...not much of a cliff hanger but enough that you gotta see what happens next in the chapter...life in Wales. As always the narration was on point. I don't think I would be as much invested with this tale if it wasn't for the fantastic narrator.
