Written by a seasoned pastoral counselor, The Path of Compassion explores engaging our heartfelt empathy effectively into an attitude of love and acts of kindness. The books helps persons of faith to learn the dynamics of compassion as they grow into their deepest and most caring selves.
It is based on the foundational truths of the scriptures to love God “with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” – and to love “your neighbor as yourself.” In three sections, Greer explores the loving compassion of the heart, soul, and mind.
The Path of Compassion delves into how we mature into ever-deepening levels of grace, making us more available with spiritual and emotional intimacy.
I really wanted to like this book. I have the utmost respect for Greer and his life and ministry as described in this book. He's experienced some truly difficult circumstances and likewise ministered to others compassionately. However, after 99 pages I gave up. It is overly simplistic and many of his personal stories, while really good, just don't land and make the point he seems to be making. Perhaps as a fifty-year-old-plus jaded clergyperson, I'm the wrong audience. I can remember when I was a college freshman and words and ideas like "empathy" or "compassion" or "grace" were new to me and this book may have been revelatory and even practical in preparation for a career in public service, ministry, and education. It's not that these qualities don't still matter to me, this book however, is introductory rather than illuminating. I can see where the outline might work as a Sunday school lesson or group study book or the basis for a sermon series, where the ideas could be fleshed out.
This is a much needed book, on a subject often overlooked. It is a gentle read, which seeks to slowly dissect the components of compassion and explain how we can become proficient practitioners of this gift through essentially becoming more loving and kind toward others.
The book is full of simple practical advice, balanced with personal life experiences and plenty of bible verses to support the arguments. This provides a good mix, giving the reader time to assimilate the teachings before moving forward in the book.
I enjoyed the book and feel it should be a basic reference in any good christian library.
