This book annoyed me. Sorry, I was wrong to say annoying; it was infuriating to read this book. I started in September 2017 and had to stop for a while as I was ready to throw the book in the bin.
From the overprotective mother wanting to have everything perfect to the controlling and manipulating girlfriend, it appeared as though everyone had a chip on their shoulders.
Now for the writer's style and writing, I liked it and it's a very bold move to create two main characters that you can't like and cheer for. It's not even a case of hating them makes them more loveable.....no these characters are manipulating and need to find a better hobby.
Daniel was also a bit boring, he just appeared to be a stand-in and to kind of connect to the two women and was starting to think that maybe at the end, he would change and maybe snap at Chery for her oddness but he too just brushed away from it, was he scared of her?
Despite odd choice in personality for all the characters involved, the book does grip and you want to know what happens and will Cherry's obsession with the rich be discovered.
I loved this book so much. I love how I mainly told the story from 2 charachers point of view. I have never been so attached to characters before. Couldn't put it down something was always going to happen with little disapointment
I was really looking forward to reading this book but, sadly, it was disappointing. The idea of two women -- one a mother and the other a girlfriend -- fighting over the same man makes sense to an extent but for me this book took it too far.
Laura's love for her son is over the top and Cherry isn't entirely believable as a social climber. Instead Cherry just comes across as manipulative and controlling-- and entirely unlike. In fact, NONE of the characters are particularly likable and that really makes it hard to get through this book. There is no one to root for, and none of their actions are even understandable or believable in the slightest. I can suspend belief for the sake of a book but this was way beyond that point. The writing was ok, a bit too descriptive in places where it wasn't necessary and occasionally the point of view jumped around too much. Overall it just didn't work for me.
Thank you Net Galley for the copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I hate to write a negative review, so let’s start with the positives: - interesting take writing from the points of view of the mother and the girlfriend. - I enjoyed the last ~10% (according to my kindle), whether that’s because it finally got exciting, or because I knew it was the end is unclear
The negatives: - who knew it was possible to write a book where the 3 main characters are all so unlikeable?! 1. Overbearing mother, who keeps making the same mistakes and who you just wish would stop being such an idiot. 2. Manipulative girlfriend, with literally no redeeming qualities 3. The ‘perfect’ son / boyfriend, who is so naive and stupid to the situation, despite the fact he is a trainee doctor, its infuriating.
In summary, I really *wanted* to like this book, and it isn’t quite a 1 star, but I won’t be reading it again that’s for sure!
Based on the excerpt (first 100 pages?) this in no way has enticed me to read the full novel. It's written in a very child-like style and I felt no interest in any of the characters or whatever was beginning as a plotline. Big pass.
I actually cannot finish this right now. It makes me uncomfortable… i guess that means it’s a good book. IDK. I googled how it ends and I much prefer the book ending to the TV ending. We’ll see if I can pick it up later.
I can't recall the last time I read a story which left me so completely uninvested in a single one of the characters. From the spoiled, naive, smitten young man to the neglected-by-her husband helicopter mom, to the obviously gold-digging, potentially mentally unstable girlfriend... every one was flat and stereotypical.
The story dragged along, never really building a sense of mystery or suspense. Perhaps (hopefully) it begins to pick up after the first 100 pages. I would be willing to read a bit further to see if things improve; however, based on the preview this is not a book I'll be recommending.
