I received a copy of this book while purchasing some ACT trainings and was grateful it was included given how underwhelming the trainings were in terms of offering anything new or in demonstrating the approach. I've always liked ACT ever since I first read about it and have since taken a handful of trainings and read several books. However, The ACT Approach is the first that focuses specifically on how to use ACT clinically. This volume is pretty brief and to the point. The ten chapters cover the whole theory and its use while focusing on application. The first few chapters cover the theory and 6 core processes. The authors then offer a great tool in the ACT Life Map and how that applies to case conceptualization. Although ACT is transdiagnostic, the book illustrates the core processes with different diagnoses like PTSD, anxiety, OCD, and chronic pain. The later chapters also offer examples with youth and couples. When it comes to learning a therapeutic approach, I've often encountered too many books, classes, and trainings that discuss theory and at best only give a brief example of the application. However, The ACT Approach includes transcripts with commentary, worksheets, and further resources to educate clinicians on how to apply this approach with clients. If I have any nitpicks, it's that I wish there were even more transcript examples. If you're new to ACT, you might want to read some theory first, but if you already have knowledge of the basics, then I highly recommend The ACT Approach is you intend to incorporate ACT into your clinical work.
This approach is simple to understand, explain and implement. It empowers the individual to identify what is happening now, compare that to what they want and make a conscious choice for how they wish to proceed. Very effective tool for living a better and more meaningful life. I recommend highly.
I’m not sure I can recommend this book enough. For clinicians looking to increase their understanding of ACT, to others just getting into ACT, this is an incredible combination of practical and philosophical. You won’t find all your questions answered, but you will have a solid foundation to move forward and an excitement for doing so as the authors truly love their work and it shows.
A good, short introduction to the ACT model. It doesn't focus on metaphors or exercises and instead does a good job of showing how you can flexibly integrate the processes of the ACT model into your clinical conversations.
I especially appreciate the annotated examples of client-therapist conversations provided. Very helpful!
This book is incredibly good, with simple language, clear information, examples, therapy sessions dialogues, worksheets, it's my first time reading about ACT and it made it a super easy and helpful experience.
