In our size-obsessed nation, the obese are ostracized and treated with disdain and polite discourtesy every time they step outside the front door. But what if the most powerful branch of government was the diet industry and thinness was not just a socially desirable virtue but a federal mandate? Could you maintain a low Body Mass Index if it was law? What if your life depended on it? The Graphic Novel shows us one woman's journey and how she stands up for her rights and inspires courage, hope, and a revolution. Join Delilah on her adventure and experience the tenacious human spirit that perseveres in the face of unrelenting adversity. This is the first in a three-part series based on the prose novel of the same name.
Philip C. Barragan, II is an author and activist born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. His debut novel, Fatizen 24602, was published in 2015 by Branch Hill Publications.
Philip earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles in 2011. And when not challenging the status quo, Philip works with his husband, artist Mason Arrigo, on their indie imprint, Embonpoint Publishing specializing in graphic novels.
In a time when divisive rhetoric has become common place, Fatizen’s themes are both all too familiar and chillingly prophetic. What sets this graphic novel apart is how it is told through a fresh and unique lens that looks honestly at the realities of living in a divided and increasingly hostile society, without the sanctimony that often accompanies such narratives.
One the one hand, Fatizen is fast-paced, full of action and lively dialogue that seethes with intrigue that will keep readers hooked. But in addition this this, it is deeply thought-provoking: rich and fully fleshed out characters expertly crafted by Barragan explore how experience shapes our identity and ideals with brutal realism and touching sincerity – humanizing even the cruellest of monsters!
Although dystopian by genre, Fatizen is a story of resilience, the courage to be yourself and told with remarkable warmth, humour and heart, all beautifully illustrated with emotive and striking artwork reminiscent of Pop Art greats like Lichtenstein.
