#1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author Richard Bard, who entertained fans with his wildly successful Brainrush thriller series, now unleashes the heart-pounding series finale in a two-book ride that will take your breath away.
Jake Bronson’s family and friends are mourning him. They’d watched as he sacrificed himself so their lives could return to normal. But normal wasn’t to be. The megalomaniac whom Jake had killed during his suicide assault left a legacy of videos that damn Jake and everyone associated with him, leading to a price being put on their heads, dead or alive.
They go to ground, unaware their every move is being tracked by a new breed of young, tech-savvy jihadists about to unleash vengeance on America’s homeland—with Jake’s family and the unsuspecting citizens of Los Angeles in their crosshairs. As the jaws of the terrorist trap begin to close, Jake’s eight-year-old son, Alex, faces a threat of his own. He carries a deadly secret that endangers the world, and now that his father is dead, Alex is the only one who can deal with it. He slips away to heed the call of unearthly visions that demand his presence, and his journey draws him to the back alleys of Bogota, Columbia, where he encounters a group of terminally ill orphans. One of their siblings has been abducted by child traffickers. Alex can’t ignore their cry for help, and the unlikely alliance plans a nothing-to-lose rescue mission that has little chance of success.
But the bloodthirsty outcry against Alex’s family and friends reaches beyond those who wish them harm, as do the visions that reveal their dark secrets to Alex. Help is on the way…

Richard Bard draws on his own experiences as a former USAF pilot and cancer survivor to craft compelling characters who risk it all for love and loyalty. Born in Munich, Germany, to American parents, he joined the United States Air Force like his father. But he left the service when he was diagnosed with cancer and learned he had only months to live. He earned a management degree from the University of Notre Dame and ran three successful companies involving advanced security products used by US embassies and governments worldwide. Now a full-time writer, he lives in Redondo Beach, California, with his wife and remains in excellent health.
I just finished reading an advanced copy of No Refuge. It's one of those books that I don't want to stop reading. Richard Bard continues to keep me on the edge of my seat with action, family, and friendship. I am now anxiously awaiting the final book in the Brainrush series, Against All Odds.
Great But... Yet again the author splits one tale into two books, rather than giving us one complete adventure in one book. This one picks up almost immediately after the ending of the previous book, and tells half of what should be an AWESOME tale. But clearly the author was putting just enough here to whet the appetite to increase sales of the next book, the finale of the series. Perhaps if the author had split the longer books at the beginning of the series into shorter books as well, it wouldn't feel like such a cash grab. But he has already given us books of nearly 500 pages in this series, so why not finish it off with two 600 page books encompassing what turn out to be the final four books of the series? The only reason that makes any sense at all is that it is nothing more than a blatant cash grab on his part. And while I don't have any qualms about anyone making a buck, I do have major problems with being so blatant and forcing the reader to buy yet another book to get the completion of the story of the book they were reading. In all honesty, had the story within this book been even slightly less compelling, I probably would have given only a single star, just because of the cash grab nature of this book.
OMG!!! This book exceeded my expectations. It was WONDERFUL. Had me on the edge all the way from start to wanting the next book.. now. It was so good.
Jake is such a good person as is his sweet son, Alex. This book brought out so many emotions in me. Fear, relief, love, and of course tears. Anytime someone dies it makes me cry. Unless it's one of the bad people of course.
This is more about Alex than anyone and he is sure a smart kid. He helps his new found friends just like his dad did and Jake would be so proud of him. He is so proud of him.
I honestly do not have enough words to describe how much I have loved and enjoyed this book and the series. I never thought I would read anything that had aliens, spaceships or anything like that, and like it. This book has it all. Action, adventure, terrorist, love, life, death and a few tears thrown in to dust the eyes. I absolutely LOVED it and can't wait for the next book
I had to give it 5 stars but it would be way more if I could. Richard Bard has a wonderful talent and even though this series will come to an end I hope he writes something just as good next. Thank you for this awesome book. I received an ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. It was just as good as I expected it to be and more!!
I just finished an ARC of "No Refuge" and the adrenaline rush is going to keep me up for hours. It was an action packed read just like all the preceding books but this one was especially gut clenching because it was mainly about Alex, an eight year old going up against kidnappers and murders. If you haven't read any of Richard Bard's "Brain Rush" books, your missing out on an exciting thrill ride. #BrainrushTheBook
Book six and the start of a two book series to bring the Brainrush series to a finish. This book starts in a similar way to book four, with Jake missing, presumed dead and his family and friends trying to move on. This time however, they are wanted terrorists after false reports portray them us the instigators of the events from book five. This has been a good series so far and this book continues the trend. I would have liked more of Jake, Tony, Marshal and team, but the Alex storyline was very good and the ending showed it is not always happy!! Looking forward to the final book and seeing how it all ends.
I just finished an advanced copy of No Refuge in exchange for an honest review and, like the other books in the Brainrush Series, I couldn't put it down. Richard Bard's writing is so fast-paced, the stories so compelling, the characters wonderfully drawn. My only criticism of this book is that it ended so abruptly it felt a bit unfinished. Regardless, Bard is a top-notch writer who has created a top-notch series. So, if you like action-packed thrillers, science fiction, and first-class writing, do yourself a favor and start reading the series. You will no doubt become as addicted to these books as I am!
The Brainrush series has been a thrilling roller coaster ride since the very beginning. And as No Refuge is the buildup before the big series finale, it's absolutely no exception. The book left me reading well into the night, entirely to the detriment of my 5am alarm. While it's the action and adventure that keep the pages flying by, the characters are what keep the story compelling. They remain the key to this amazing series. They made me laugh more times than I can count and even managed to choke me up at key points in the story.
Compelling, engaging, fast paced, and endless fun. I'll be sad to see the series draw to a close. That said, bring on book #7 because I can't wait to see what happens next!
Though I received an advanced copy of No Refuge in exchange for an honest review, as a long time fan of the series it was already on my to-read list.
I have to admit that I have been hooked on Brainrush since the very first book, Richard Bard is such a wonderful author and gifted storyteller.. Unlike other book series that drag out a story that could be told in just one book every book in the Brainrush series is a full length novel. In book 6, No Refuge, the story about the main characters that we have come to love continues so it is definitely recommended that you read the previous 5 books as well. But believe me, even if you start out with this book, you are going to want to read the others, too. If this is your first adventure with Brainrush you are still going to grasp the story as there are some explanations about what had happened previously but you will want get the full picture. The story about Jake, his family and his friends continues in the fast paced fashion that we have come accustomed to. As usual, there are lots of sci-fi, action, drama and adventure. The story line about the terminally ill kids and their travels was a bit unbelievable but this is a work of fiction anyhow. I had a hard time putting this book down and can't wait to read the next / last book in this series.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I needed a GPS to keep up with all the twists and turns in this great book. I've read all the Brainrush books and this one is at the top of the list. Jake Bronson's family is mourning his death and trying to stay off the radar of mercenaries who have been told that they are terrorists and also from a group of actual terrorists who want the alien-based abilities that both Jake and his son Alex possess. Alex escapes by stowing away on a bus filled with terminally ill orphans and then teams up with a group of them to rescue one of the girls' sister from human traffickers. Without giving away too much of the story, suffice it to say that the action never stops and, of course, comes to a climax at the end that left me drooling for more. I can only hope the next chapter of this great story isn't too far from release. Anyone who enjoys thrillers with a bit of sci-fi will love this series. I guarantee you'll stay up late reading this one. Five strong stars.
This sixth book in the series is a mixture of Technothriller, Paranormal Science Fiction (not the spirits kind), Military, Terrorism, and Family Drama genres.
Jake Bronson thought he was doing the right thing but when he discovers otherwise it is too late to keep his youngest son from the dangers of Bogota, Colombia.
The thing that stuck out the most to me about this book was the underlying "do the right thing no matter the cost" theme. It just struck me that it could all be a matter of perspective on what the right thing actually is.
Warning: There is Violence as well as Adult language and situations that may not be suitable for those with a sensitive nature.
Disclaimer: I was provided an advanced readers copy, however, all opinions expressed above are mine and freely given.
This is one of those books that once you sgart in the series, you almost have to finish it to find out what happed to the main characters, Alex, Jake, Francessa, Ahmed, and others. The story is outlandish and believable all at the same time. Governments abusing power and wanting the latest in weapons and computer technological advances, and always, there is the abuse of money and power. I found the pace of this one fast and furious and really liked the asides of explanations of animals in the rain forest and the ecological nightmares facing those who keep clearing away trees for civilization to come in. I had to get the next and last book in the series to satisfy my crushing need to see that the good guys triumph and the the world doesn't perish. The thought that some may or might take some of the actions in this book is a scary premise.
I thoroughly enjoyed the latest book in the Brainrush series and highly recommend it to one and all. Richard Bard is a terrific author and one is hooked from the start in this Brainrush series. The suspense builds and a reader just can't put it down. There is plenty of action in the book (as there is the series) and it becomes a page turner from the start.
It should be read in sequence but if a reader starts with it he'll want to go back and read the previous books.
Jake and his friends become your friends as well. I for one will be sadden when the next (and final) book is released because the series will end with its conclusion--but one can always read the series from start to finish again.
If you like action and adventure this is a must read series!!
No Refuge is a wonderful addition to the Brainrush series. While this book can easily be read as a standalone, since the author provides enough background in the narrative for the reader, I still highly recommend reading the series from the beginning.
Jake and his friends and family are back for another thrilling, fast-paced adventure. This time, Jake's son, Alex, takes the lead in the adventure forming his own group, the Card Club. The young group is spunky, resourceful and daring as they follow Alex on an exciting rescue adventure, with father and son teaming up for a satisfying conclusion. A fun, fast and delightful read. I can't wait for the next one!!
Overall, I've really enjoyed the Brainrush series, however this installment is a deviation in the main plot line, focusing on Alex, Jake's 8 year old son. It a stretches credibility when a bunch of terminally ill children take on child traffickers in Columbia. The main adult characters in the series are only background in this book, and even Jake has a supporting role. The plot line is simple and while this story no doubt sets up the finale, it seems an unrequired inclusion in the main series and plot line and not on par with the earlier titles. If you are into the series, by all means read this title. Just set your expectations a bit lower.
Another fast paced thriller in the Brainrush series with plenty of adventure and surprises. Eight year old Alex discovers that his new friend has a twin sister. He doesn’t hesitate to jump into the dangerous underground world in Bogota. Alex finds courage and commitment in surprising places as his new friends band together and put their various talents to work to stop people who take advantage of children. A suspenseful and enjoyable read.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have read all the books in this series and have not been disappointed yet. Every book keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through!! Once you start you can not put it down. I read this one in 3 days. Can't wait for the finally book to come out. It will actually be a little bitter sweet because it will be the end. Thank you Richard for sharing these with the world!
Actually, I just finished reading this book, the last in the Brainrush series, and it didn't disappoint. It's full of suspense, action, and engaging characters - both adult and children. Just when you think things the action has died down, here comes another twist. I loved this series and am sorry to see it come to an end. I'll definitely be looking for future books from this author.
It was fantastic to see how a group of children pulled and planned together to overcome a ring o thugs and rescue one member's identical twin. Because of the intensity of this story I will next read something a bit more mundane to cleanse my reading palate before taking on the conclusion of the series.
Thankfully the characters in this book are so well written that it carries the series. Up to this point the large-than-life plot has been grandiose would fit in the universe this book has created. In this story it's just too much. Way over the top very unbelievable, but when there are great characters it overshadows the downfalls.
This volume of the series is fast-paced and exciting! A real page turner. My husband gives me dirty looks because I won't put the book down...finished it just now and eagerly awaiting he final volume.
The exciting adventure continues with Alex and Jake heading towards a cavern in the jungle. Some great new kid characters that are dying orphans enliven up the tale. Another wonderful novel in the Brainrush series. Can't wait for the final installment. Enjoy!!
I really enjoy his series. It is filled with action and the characters are interesting. We all need heroes, today more than ever to get us through the day. This book delivers.
Alex and his card club friends are out to save a members sister but the enemy is just as determined to accomplish their goals. This is the lead in to the final chapter of the saga, one I can't wait to read.
These books were incredible! Received the first free and quickly read and bought all the others, the old standby of, I couldn't put them down holds true! Great character development, a little bit of every scenario you can imagine, incredibly fun read!!!!
You must suspend belief to enjoy the brainwash series, and No Refuge is certainly no exception. But the orphans, though cartoonish, got a very real tear out of me and that counts for something. Entertaining, if you let it.
I'm getting tired of series that string you along just so you will buy the next book too. I was given a free copy in exchange for a social media review.
