My mom got me this 100 day devotional for my birthday this year because she thought it looked like one I would enjoy, and I did enjoy it quite a lot. While Ms. Shankle is in quite a different stage of life than I am (I’m 26 and single, she’s a 40-something wife and mother of one) I still found her writing very relatable and appreciated her insights on life and the Bible. She connected lessons in each passage of Scripture that she used to anecdotes from her life where God taught her that very lesson. Some of the lessons are lighter and some are deeper, but all have the potential to touch someone right where they are. I, myself, was touched and reminded of a much-needed truth several times while reading this devotional for the past 100 days. I also enjoyed Ms. Shankle’s writing style enough that I wouldn’t mind reading a another devotional authored by her were she to write another one.

In this devotional, Melanie Shankle talks about how we can find God in our everyday lives. God is showing up in so many ways in our lives if we just pay attention. This is perfect for someone who needs a little extra encouragement, humor, or some guidance in reconnecting with God in a simple way.

First, it's not a book meant for sitting down to read. It's supposed to be a daily reading over the course of 100 days. I did not participate in that way, I just let it play as I ran and got through 25-30 "days" each time I ran. So they're very short if you'd like to make this a daily thing like it's meant to be.

Second, Melanie reads the audiobook. While I love her, her Texas dialect was distracting at times. For instance, she just completely bowled over any t's. Like, it's normal not to pronounce every T in our speech, but there's always a bit of an aspiration, a pause indicating the missing T, or perhaps substituting a d sound for it. Not with Melanie. "Hunting" becomes "hunning" and so forth.

But it was fabulous!

I loved how relatable she is. She's a woman, wife, mother who gets it. She knows life is hard, busy, stressful, weird, and funny. She knows we have ALL fallen short, and that she and I are no exceptions. She's real and she's honest.

I also liked how alike we are. We're both "middle adults" (my term) - too old to be a young adult, but not quite to middle age yet (at least at the time of her writing this, which was 2018). We both have teenaged daughters who are both only children, and both by parents' choice. She also throws pop culture references into almost every day, which speaks directly to my personality. She quoted and/or referenced everything I love from The Wizard of Oz to Schitt's Creek, to Indiana Jones and beyond.

And added bonus - before she became a writer, she was a pharmaceutical sales rep with a company car.
If you don't understand the significance of that, I'm sad for you. 💚🍍🤜🤛🏾

The premise of this book is about how we can find the good (and more importantly, the God) in our everyday life. In what seems like the mundane. We don't have to DO anything different to BE and FEEL different. We just need to change the way we look at and think about our God.
She loosely follows the SOAP method of reading the Bible, which I attended and lead a study for several years that focused on that method where you pick a verse that jumps out at you from that day's reading (S = Scripture), you make an observation about said Scripture (O), figure out how to apply it to your everyday life (A), and pray about it (P).

I 100% recommend this to every woman ever. Whether you're a wife and/or mom or not. You will be moved, uplifted, and encouraged. But... maybe don't listen while running. There were a couple poignant stories that made me tear up, and running while crying is HARD!

I love Melanie Shankle. If you haven't read Sparkly Green Earrings or Antelope in my Living Room, you should. Just funny good reads.

I think, for this book, I have simply read too many devotionals back to back and at too fast a pace. This book had some definitely good things in it, but it didn't do as much for me as it could have. I do think if I would read them one a day like they are meant to be read, I would get a lot more out of the readings.

This book is more on the light side of light. While it has good thoughts, they would tend to be more surface level, which is pretty much what I would expect from reading Melanie's writings. I don't say that meanly, I think we need the light and the deep in this world and so we need both kinds of writers.

That being said, I did appreciate how she could take everyday experiences and relate them to a spiritual lesson. I enjoy reading authors who can do that. She talks a lot about fears and trusting God with those fears, something I would do well to listen up on.

One thing that bothered me in her writing was a reference to millions of years. From something else she said, she does believe in creation, so I'm not sure how the millions of years fit in on another devotional, but ....

The book is very pretty, a nice hardcover with a ribbon marker. My one gripe with the book and this has nothing to do with Melanie is there were quite a few mistakes in the book, mostly missing words. I expect to find one or so in a book, everybody is human after all, but this book had more than most. Sometimes I would reread the sentence to see how it should be read so it would make sense and it just wouldn't make sense and I realized a word was missing. I'll give you an example. This is a really good thought and I would do well to internalize it, but... "We need to walk our road and not spend time looking left and right to see what everyone else is doing, especially because we never know the road someone else." It just stops there and so it's just a minor grievance, but it's there.

Anyway, I did enjoy this book for the most part. Definitely things that I could learn from it, but not super earth shattering. And now I think I need to move on from devotionals for awhile.

I received this book from Book Look Bloggers and was not required to write a positive review.

Everyday Holy: Finding a Big God in the Little Moments is the first book that I have read by Melanie Shankle.

Everyday Holy is a book of 100 devotions. It is a lovely volume. Perfect size to keep close by for reading your daily devotional. This book will challenge you. And it assists you in helping you appreciate what you already have. God's truth is right there waiting for you...in little things and little moments. You don't need something big!

This lovely book would be a great gift to yourself or to someone you know that you could find it helpful. I think it is helpful for women no matter where they are in the their walk.

Highly recommend Everyday Holy: Finding a Big God in the Little Moments.

Everyday Holy by Melanie Shankle is like sitting down with a good friend and having an encouraging conversation. Shankle writes in a light hearted tone about deep (and not so deep) issues that I believe all women face.

In the introduction alone she states "And that is what you'll find in these pages - little pieces that point us to a big God." THAT is how I find God to be in my life - directing me little by little and letting my faith lead me to Him.

Shankle does not have a "holier than thou" attitude and does not talk down in this devotional. While it's chaptered into 100 devotionals I found myself reading it more as a book because I didn't want to stop!

This book was given to me by BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my honest review.

I've enjoyed every Melanie Shankle book I've ever picked up...she's like that friend who has no filter and isn't afraid to let you know it! Hearing her speak is like talking to a good friend; she has your best interests at heart and loves to help you be your best self. Unlike her other books, this is not so much of a novel; it is a devotional. Each day has a piece on finding the holy moments throughout your day, no matter what your schedule looks like or how strung up you feel. She shows us how each day is a gift from God, and we just need to remember to open it up! The book itself is beautiful, and it would make a great gift for Mother's Day.

Sitting by the bed for some time, I’ve picked up & read this devotional on days where I was better about making myself pause. I have to say these 100 devotionals are wonderful - concise, meaningful, not preachy, and authentic to this author’s voice. If you like Shankle’s books this is a great book to add, but even those moms unfamiliar with her would enjoy this. These are not in depth biblical dissections but each day starts with one scripture and then a story with nugget of wisdom & connection to that verse. They are simply numbered so there’s no guilt of specific month-day.

A sweet little read with daily devotions - especially when there are days we just wake up and think, wait, what is happening!? We have all been there.

Melanie reminds us to not let our past dictate our future and to constantly remind ourselves that we are wonderfully and fearfully made.

We all need to walk our own path and not spend the time looking left and right to see what everyone else is doing. In order for our light to shine bright, we have to accept grace rather than trying to swim in our own power.

I liked this book, because I read the author's blog and have always enjoyed the stories about her family and friends. In this devotional, she writes in a similar manner, and the entries that were most interesting to me were the ones where she related that day's Bible verse to something that happened in her day-to-day life.

Reading this devotional for the last 100 days has been like sitting with a friend and discussing our relationship with God in the world. Melanie Shankle brings a touch of humor to her writing that eases the reader into the struggle of being a faithful Christian in the everyday life moments. As the title states, everyday can be holy if we seek to meet with God in all that we do.

100/10. I laughed, cried, talked to God and everything in between. I listened to this as an audiobook so I just listened straight through. But I will be buying it and reading one everyday like you’re suppose to and I will be buying a copy for every woman in my family! So so good! She’s quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Side note: I love love love her podcast, the big boo cast

So I took more than 100 days to finish this collection of devotions.
I gave myself grace and read when I really needed that dose of Melanie's voice and spirit. She is a writer and podcaster I love, so I loved this book as well.

Melanie Shankle proves, again, why she’s my favorite! I absolutely loved this book of devotions. They were heartfelt, simple but satisfying for my desire to have a “nugget” from God’s word, and very applicable to my life. My only “complaint” is that there’s only 100 of them and not 1000.

This is a 100 day devotional. Shankle has a fantastic “real” writing style. They’re short and only take a couple of minutes to read.

I appreciate Shankle not over simplifying life’s worries by “Jesus-ing” everything like most Christian writers do.

Repetitive.

Repetitive, important truths interspersed with stand-up comedic one-liners is a bad combination, and really not as funny as she seems to think.
