Max Haines was a syndicated crime columnist. His "Crime Flashback" column made its debut in the Toronto Sun in 1972 and was syndicated across Canada and in several Latin and South American countries.. His first column was about Lizzie Borden. He was awarded the Derrick Murdoch Award, one of the Arthur Ellis awards, by the Crime Writers of Canada.
This was a great book for bathroom reading. A collection of small true crime essays on Canadian crimes, none of them went over 12 pages.
Max Haines spent years writing these sorts of stories for papers, although he is now retired. Over the years, I've read a lot of his collected stories. You aren't going to get in-depth looks at the crimes in question, but a fun overview of the case.
Interesting that in the stories, which cover close to 150 years, few of them involve guns. They range from the assassination of D'Arcy McGee (one of the fathers of Confederation) to the infamous Paul Bernardo and Karla Hamulka rape/murders that made the news around the world. It even covers the most famous wrongfully convicted person in Canada, David Milgaard, who was convicted of murder at the age of 17, and released after being exonerated 27 years later.
One article that would have to be updated today is Steven Truscott. The article covers his conviction for the murder/rape of a twelve year old girl, and his attempts at appeals. Well, about eight years after this book was published, his conviction was declared a miscarriage of justice. He was released, and the next year he won compensation from the province
If this were updated today, there would no doubt be pieces on Luka Magnotta (the resent case of a man who killed a man a posted the video of it to the internet before becoming the subject of an international manhunt. He also mailed body parts to the headquarters of several federal political parties) and Colonel Russell Williams (a military commander convicted a couple of years ago of filming himself raping and murdering several women)
loved it max haines to me is the best crime writer he give you all the good stuff in a short version so you dont have to read a whole book unless you want more information...
