Alien, Awakening

Abducted by aliens.

Rescued by aliens.

Stranded on the far side of the Galaxy, psychologist Kathryn Holden has done her best to help her fellow abductees—both human and non-human—adjust to their new life in an alien civilisation. Setting out to explore her new home and search for that last elusive fragment of her own peace of mind, she discovers a perfectly preserved underground city with no evidence of a population . . . and an Artificially Sentient Intelligence bent on protecting her from anything or anyone.

T’Hargen Mhartak, sector head for covert operations for the Angrigan, Magran & Legolopanth Alliance, once deluded himself that the human woman, Kathryn Holden, held the key to lighting the darkness shrouding his soul. A momentary lapse in judgement. However instinct demands she is fundamental to the future of the Alliance—the only thing he lives for, the only thing standing between his peaceful society and the callous Bluthen race.

When he and Kathryn are catapulted deep into enemy territory, T’Hargen is forced to question his deep-seated convictions in order to secure a strong ally for the Alliance and also, possibly, capture that fragile dream he’d abandoned long ago of awakening to a bright, new future.

I first put pen to paper with the intention of writing a fantasy story way back in 1987. And I do mean pen to paper, back then I could find the ‘zone’ more easily by creating the words with my hand as well as my head.

I began the exercise as a hobby and over the next 20 years managed to create a one hundred and fifty thousand word fantasy. Quite some time to write a book, I know, but not finishing never entered my head. How to finish certainly proved something of a challenge.

In 2009 a friend suggested I join the wonderful RWAus (Romance Writers of Australia) group and in 2010 I attended my first conference. The support and inspiration received from the members of this great organisation help me recognise that writing is not only the journey, but the destination as well.

In 2012 I volunteered to contest manage the RWAus STALI (Single Title And Loving It). An interesting experience to say the least. The amount of work that goes on behind the scenes is exceptional and I take my hat off to contest managers everywhere.

Alien, Awakening

I absolutely loved Alien Mine and how intensely you connected with the main characters. I was so looking forward to connecting with Kat and T. It just never came about and even though the story was good you always felt that disconnect. There was no connection even with Sandrea and the General when they very briefly appeared. I feel bad because I truly liked this story and it could have been so much better. I really hope that with the next story there is that connection that fills you with emotion for all the characters and makes for a fantastic story.

There's a colony of former abductees, hidden ancient ruins, puzzles, a bit of a Stargate situation, eeeveeel alien race, repressed females, search and rescue mission, the cutest little sidekick drone, some serious pants-feelings and absolutely no consent issues (pet peeve). So yeah, all in good fun.

Almost

As good as the first in the series, which is still in my best of the best books list. Can't wait for more in the series to come out.

Alien, Awakening by Sandra Harris delivers an intriguing blend of science fiction adventure, alien diplomacy, and emotional discovery set on the far side of the galaxy.

The story follows psychologist Kathryn Holden, a human abductee who now finds herself living among alien civilizations while helping other abductees adapt to their new reality. Her search for peace and understanding leads her to the discovery of a mysterious underground city perfectly preserved yet completely abandoned and protected by a powerful Artificially Sentient Intelligence.

As the narrative unfolds, Kathryn’s path becomes intertwined with T’Hargen Mhartak, a covert operations leader working to protect the Angrigan, Magran & Legolopanth Alliance from the threatening Bluthen race. Their reluctant partnership develops in the middle of danger and uncertainty as they are thrust into hostile territory where survival, trust, and the fate of entire civilizations are at stake.

Sandra Harris creates an imaginative interstellar setting filled with political tension, advanced alien cultures, and philosophical questions about identity and belonging. The combination of psychological insight, adventure, and a subtle romantic thread gives the story depth while keeping the pace engaging.

For readers who enjoy science fiction with alien worlds, thoughtful characters, and a touch of romance woven into a larger galactic conflict, Alien, Awakening offers a compelling and imaginative journey.

I really wanted to like this book but in the end it was just meh. I was, like everyone else who enjoyed the first boo, waiting for the thrill of more. But everything felt forced and predictable. After Alien Mine I was expecting the same heart racing pace, the unpredictability of the plot where she was a key component to the Bluthen war. All the heat between them. Especially when this heroine was supposed to be a woman of colour. Too much of her dialogue was unreal and out of character. there was so much description of the world's that it was overload and not enough character development to make these characters real. In book 1 T'Hargen was more three dimensional than this book. Still I gave it 3 stars because I believe this book was fan driven and Ms. harris is one of my favourite writers..

Good storyline. However having the main female character in love with someone who doesn't respect her & looks down on her was annoying. How can they have a happy ending? T'Hargen EVENTUALLY gets there; Kat shouldn't have put up with it but she did, which was massively annoying & a downside to this book. Any self-respecting woman would never put up with all the down-grading Kat had to put up with. It's a shame Ms. Harris didn't make Kat a stronger woman, after all she's been through.
