Madeleiné Series #1

When the Wolf Loves

Rate this book
After his father’s death in London in 1796, Ryder Benedict travels to the New World to find answers to his past. He planned to be gone no longer than a year but two years later, in the company of six men from three different tribes who have all come together to help him, he finds himself in the wilderness of the Pacific northwest, far beyond the borders of the American, French and Spanish settlements. When he is attacked and injured by a wolf, a young white girl with extraordinary instincts saves his life. Named Esa-mogo'ne’ by the local Bannock, she takes Ryder to their village to heal and over a bitter winter Ryder learns of her tragic past and discovers a love that will endure his whole life.

This author is also published under Quinn Carno.

I’ve been writing stories since I was a child. I'll read anything, but the book has to grab me from the first page and if I can achieve that in my own stories, then I think that’s when a little bit of magic happens.

I've written two series and co-authored one book.

The first series is Madeleine, a historical American frontier series of nine books which has some paranormal for those who love Native American folklore, spirit guides and spirit animals. The first book begins in 1799 in the pacific northwest of the New World where Ryder Benedict goes to find answers to his past. This is long before the west was settled by Europeans, when tribes still fought with bows and arrows and lances and when bison herds still roamed across the great plains and numbered in their millions. In this series you'll travel to England, where Europe is a powder keg due to the ambitions of Napoleon Bonaparte. If you love adventure in the old days of fur trappers, native Americans, some paranormal with spirit guides, then you may like these books There are six books already published with Book 7 due to be published late 2024 and Book 8 and 9 in early 2025. Most of these books are big reads with 400-530 pages long, filled with love and loss, ambition and greed, jealousy and hate and ultimately revenge.
Order of the series:
When the Wolf Loves
When the Wolf Hunts
When the Wolf Bites
When the Wolf Dreams
When the Wolf Breathes
When the Leaving is Hard
Book 7
Books 8 and 9 will be coming in early 2025.
These books are in KindleUnlimited.

My second series is two books in the escape west by wagon train series. This tells the adventures of two young women escaping west to start new lives, never expecting to find love on the way.
Order of the series:
Ella
Ruby
Both these books are in Amazon Prime and KindleUnlimited.

The book I co-wrote with my friend Carena McGregor is the first book in a series called Brides Bound for Oregon. I wrote this under the name Quinn Carno to keep this series separate from my Sadie Conall books. I hope to write some books using this name in a more modern genre some day soon, meanwhile Carena will carry on the series without me, due to the workload of my own books.
These books are in KindleUnlimited.

I also hope to start work on the Archard family in 2025 once I've put Ryder and Madeleine to rest, although I'm fine with that after nine books. You first met the Archard family in Ruby and I'm planning on writing three books in this series.
Order of Series:
Scarlett
Levi
Jed

After reading this at night, I felt that I should be putting on buckeskin trousers and shift the next morning, rather than a t-shirt and skirt. For that is one of the strengths of this novel: the immersion in the Bannock (and Shoshone) clans and the place where they lived. I could feel the cold, taste the food, see the people.
There's also a pleasing emotional maturity about this that few adventure and/or romance books manage to achieve. Actions have consequences and ramifications; people respond in complex ways, not as stereotypes.
This really should have been picked up by a major publisher, and then, one hopes, a few of the niggles would be ironed out by a copy editor. There are several typos. Not loads, as in some works - this has been proofread, but not well enough. This jars at some crucial moments, e.g. on page 292: "Yet that moment was one of the loneliness in Madeleiné's life". Presumably, the word should have been 'loneliest'.
That quote shows up another problem. While the Native American sectins have been carefully researched, the French and English have not. I was startled to see 'Madeleine' with an acute accent on the final letter. It might be my knowledge at fault, but I've been unable to find any trace of this anywhere. If it is a pet name, that should have been mentioned. Sadly, the French city of Orléans has lost its accent. This is such a simple thing to check! And would a man brought up in England, in the 18th century, really say 'vest' for 'waistcoat'? It's possible that that was part of the modernisation of language to make the book more readable for the uneducated, but it jarred on me.
So that's why I knocked a star off.
I was lucky enough to receive this free from a Goodreads Giveaway in exchange for an honest review. I am always honest in my reviews, and I would't say that this was good if it were not.
The problems are small ones and the book as a whole was a delight. I look forward to the next one.

When the Wolf Loves (Madeleine Book 1)

By Sadie Conall
This book is very deserving of the 5 star rating, if there was a higher rating, that would be given. I could not believe it when the book ended.I guess that I wanted the book to go on and on.I loved the characters, too numerous, to name, except for Madeline and Ryder.I loved the plot, always kept interesting by the author.I love wolves and was pleased to read about the wolf and his part in the story . Also happy to read about different Native American tribes and their cultures. This book was worth reading. I am looking forward to the next book.

Such a great story!

It was intriguing and educational. I had a hard time putting it down to get things done that I needed to do! It was heartwarming and made me cry several times, which isn't like me. I really got in to the characters and the story and the way of life they led. The bond between all of them kept me wanting to keep reading to see what happens next. Can't wait to read the other stories that follow!

Girl living alone finds comfort with a wolf and an injured hunter

A man and woman from vastly different worlds find mutual love. He is early on besotted but she takes almost the whole book to sort out her feelings. Fascinating background on Native American tribal beliefs and daily traditions

A refreshing and well written book.

This was such a different and attention grabbing book that I found myself thinking about it off and on All day. I love history and the presentation of the Pacific Northwest and the native American culture in the late 1700's was fascinating and well written. Can't wait to read volume 2 !

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were strong but they had their secret vulnerabilities. The plot moved along quickly, there were no slow areas.I would recommend this book to those who enjoy romances, historical novels, and Western novels.

Fascinating Story

I love this story based on true events. The challenges of the early west and the stealing of the indigenous peoples land and life. The story is about life before that happened. Truly fascinating.

Beautiful Book

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Madeleine's relationship with her wolf brought me to tears.
