Engaged to the dark and dashing Lord Trevithan, Joanna Lindby should be the happiest of ladies in Regency London. But she wonders—why would this enigmatic lord choose her? She’s shy, never arguing, always polite. But when a note arrives cancelling the wedding, Joanna vows that she will be married in June, no matter the cost.
England’s top intelligence agent Allister Fenwick, Lord Trevithan, is shocked when Joanna demands an explanation. He never sent that note. Someone is trying to come between them. Though Allister promised himself to leave the world of espionage, he cannot help but be drawn into this case, if only to protect his surprisingly headstrong bride-to-be. Yet, is it an old enemy or an old friend causing the mischief? Can a little espionage unmask hidden hearts in time for a June wedding?
Second book in the Spy Matchmaker series after The Husband Mission, this sweet Regency romance is an expanded version of a novella originally published by Kensington in His Blushing Bride. The novella won a coveted Top Pick from RT Book Reviews. The Spy Matchmaker: all the intrigue of love.
Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn’t actually sell her first novel until she had learned a bit more about writing. Since her first Regency romance was published in 1998, her stories have traveled the globe, with translations in many languages including Dutch, German, Italian, and Portuguese. She is now the author of more than 50 works of warm, witty historical romance.
She and her husband of 30 years reside in Washington State on the way to Mt. Rainier. Regina Scott has driven four in hand, learned to fence, sailed on a tall ship, and dressed as a Regency dandy, all in the name of research, of course. This part of the series was also funny. I loved Joanna's mother's "way of expressing some information". I liked also what was the mystery. A nice twist.
But for some reason, I enjoyed it a bit less than the previous one. Was it too short? Did it lack something in the plot? I don't know. What I do know is that I found stupid some of Joanna's behaviour, e.g. the last confrontation scene. I don't understand that test for Alex.
Another delightful English spy story by Regina Scott. Allister has found his ideal bride in Joanna and has retired from spying. Or has he? Troubling circumstances surrounding their upcoming wedding causes Allister to come face to face with his nemesis- The Skull - a notorious French spy! Ms. scott keeps us guessing who indeed is the culprit that wants to prevent this marriage. Well done historical suspense. *I downloaded this ebook from book funnel. All opinions are my own. *
This was just ok for me. Cute story, sweet romance. I did like that the story starts with our H/h already recently engaged. Someone is trying to split them up. So the storyline was unique and fun.
Joanna Lindby is determined not to be left on the shelf. She was amazed when Allister Fenwick, Baron Trevithan proposed to her. Joanna likes spending time with Allister and his kisses make her feel giddy but he's so enigmatic. Do they need more time to get to know one another? Joanna plans to stick to her June wedding date and hope for the best. Allister is torn. He's tired of spying for His Majesty's government but his nemesis is still out there. His best friend, Davis Loughton, thinks Allister needs to stay in the game until Daremier is caught. Allister is convinced he's had enough and marrying Joanna is the right choice. Yet, he isn't quite in love with her. That is...until a mysterious note threatens to unravel their relationship and Allister moves heaven and earth to keep Joanna safe. He didn't reckon with an intelligent bride who knows her own mind and is determined to ferret out the enemy on her own! Can these two make it down the aisle in June?
This story is cute but short. It's not the most historically accurate thing I've ever read. The mystery is pretty easy to figure out. I guessed it right away. I enjoyed the hunt for the French spy and think that could have made a full length novel. I LOVED Friends and Foes.)
Joanna is a nice person. She has a reputation among the gentlemen for being cold but that's simply because she refuses to marry a fortune hunter. She will only marry for love. She's kind to her eccentric mother and her bluestocking best friend and we're told she loves Allister. Joanna can be strong willed though and even a bit foolhardy at times. Allister is a brooding hero. He has had a difficult past and just wants a more peaceful, quiet life now with a wife and children at home. He isn't even thinking about taking his seat in parliament or what he stands for until Joanna puts the thought in his head. Thank goodness for her. Of course he has earned his retirement but I think that will get old after awhile. He seems to enjoy chasing spies and was once good at it but hasn't managed to catch his man yet. His best friend Davis thinks Allister should stay. Davis whines about not wanting to train new recruits but if Allister's heart isn't in it then I think he should leave.
Joanna's mother is the best secondary character. She has an unusal way of speaking. Her thoughts run ahead of her mouth and no one can figure out what she means except Joanna. It's cute and charming. I don't like Davis very much. I doubt he's a good spy if he isn't welcoming to others. That could be a problem. Eugenia Welch (who will have her own happily ever after in The Heiress Objective/The Bluestocking on His Knee) is a great character. She's odd. Her interests are all over the place and rather strange.
There's a cunning French villain who the spies are after. He's very clever and manages to evade them but ends up leaving clues behind when he courts a woman of easy virtue! There's another villain, Safton, who is out to ruin young gentlemen. Are they one in the same? Allister doesn't think so but thinsk Safton is worth watching as Safton's next victim seems to be Robbie Whattling, the younger brother of Kevin Whattling (The Heiress Objective). Robbie is young, innocent, lively and not very bright- a terrible combination. I think Safton IS clever enough to disguise his height and masquerade as an Englishman when he's a French spy.
Allister is a cousin of Justinian Darby (The Mistletoe Kitten) and Joanna is friends with Genevieve Munroe (My True Love Gave to Me) and Eugenia Welch (The Heiress Objective). The Marquess of Hastings is still spymaster and has passed on his catch phrase "pluck to the backbone" to Davis. I think the spymaster should have said it about Joanna and not Davis. The thought popped right into my head before the line appeared. He was a good man who appreciated a strong woman.
I enjoyed this little story as a pleasant diversion before going to sleep and it was the last of the original Regency series I needed to read. It's always fun catching up with these characters, they're like old friends. I'm glad to keep collecting the new revised e-books. My paperbacks are either falling apart or I gave them away.
Miss Joanna Lindby was delighted when Lord Trevithan proposed, but now she’s not sure he really loves her. Lord Allistair Trevithan is certain Joanna will be the perfect wife but has doubts he can settle down without the excitement of working for the spymaster. When someone tries to separate this pair, they draw closer together to find the truth and discover they are more suited than either of them could have thought.
I am fascinated to know more about the romantic spymaster, Lord Hastings, who encourages his agents to settle down. Does HE get a romance at some point? This is the second book in the series where he was encouraged romance, even if he doesn’t have a direct hand in it.
Joanna and Alistair were a sweet couple. From the start, it is obvious they care about each other. They just need a little more time together, to be honest with each other and strengthen their love into an unbreakable bond.
The plot moves at a quick pace but never seems too fast. The secondary characters play their parts well, supporting our couple as needed.
For fans of Regency romance with a touch of mystery, you won't go wrong with this one.
The June Bride Conspiracy by Regina Scott Spy Matchmaker Series Book Two Joanna Lindby is getting married in June. A handsome man to be sure, but she's fallen in love with her future husband and doesn't feel he reciprocates her feelings.
Allister Fenwick, Baron Trevithan is retiring from the Intelligence Corps. He's ready to get married and settle down. Until his soon-to-be wife starts receiving threats. He can't stop working until he finds out who is threatening Joanna.
Another series full of intrigue, romance, and a touch of humor. Characters that come to life. I'm looking forward to more of their stories.
The June Bride Conspiracy, the second book in The Spy Matchmaker series, is an intriguing Regency romance featuring a head-strong heroine and a protective hero. A fast-paced plot with a little mystery and a lot of surprises, endearing characters, and sweet romance combine to make an enjoyable, entertaining read. If you are looking for a light, quick, but satisfying read, I recommend this one. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The first was so good. I had to get the second and all the rest.
Conspiracy, indeed. I like this new spy matchmaker series. It’s very intriguing. I did get a few right on my guesses but it’s mysteries I like and this is a good mystery. Kind of reminds me of way back. I don’t know which fortune bride it was but they had one. He was kind of a spy, but this is way better but don’t take my word for it. Check it out yourself.
This historical fiction novel has interesting characters. Allister has worked for the crown as a spy for the past ten years. He meets Joana and dances with her and after only 3 months proposes. Joana is thrilled until someone tries to stop them from marrying. This fun romance has just the right amount of mystery and suspense.
Interesting to start the story after the engagement. They really needed to talk to each other, the HEA would have come sooner. I really didn't care that much about H\h, I really didn't know much about them.
That was a weird wittle book... her only character thing was obsessing about him and his being a gorgeous ofc spy for the war office. who didnt love her. i think. then did. then didnt. then did. then didnt. then did again when she did something dummb. ohh happy marriage..
I really liked the sound of this one; Regency spies and a June bride. But the action was slow and I was disappointed that I 'solved' it very early on. It had potential to be much more.
It's an interesting concept. A shy young lady of the ton has become engaged to a handsome gentleman. Strange events begin to happen. What! He's a spy? I won't reveal more, but true love wins.

Allister had been a spy for 10 years. But having met Lady Abigail, he was ready to retire and devote himself to her. But his nemesis appears to have other plans. This was a nice diversion that I enjoyed.
