Excellent book about Dhirubhai Ambani and his outlook on business; so often we concentrate on 'western' giants of business that we forget there are innovative business leaders all over the world. A must read for anyone involved in global business trends. Of particular interest to those who do or want to do business in India.

The book brings out the various characteristics of an ideal employer or boss through practical examples from Late Mr. Dhirubhai H Ambani’s professional life. Also, the author talks about the dreams of a common man with a traditional background, who not only realized his dreams but also, created new benchmarks and embedded new philosophies into entrepreneurship which will remain fresh in the mind of people across nations and generations. The facts mentioned in the book prove that aptitude is not all what it takes to run a business instead, attitude, social relations with employees and investors and trusting employees are an integral part of a professional organization.

Primarily, the optimism which Dhirubhai had shown in his entire professional career has been the source of inspiration for many other. He inculcates optimism in individuals but advocates dreaming as big as he did. The “Dream Big” philosophy was the most unique characteristic of Dhirubhai. A quote by Dhirubhai says “A vision has to be within reach not in the air. It has to be achievable.” The statement is very relevant when decisions are to be made in uncertain situations. By this statement it can also be inferred that the focus of Vision statement of an individual or a firm is not only to quote something big or stimulate employees rather, it should extrapolate the potential and growth of a firm based on their current situation. The author also talks about “Change your orbit, constantly”. In his professional career, Dhirubhai dictated the need for future planning and thinking beyond. He advocated that if one plans only for present then, there would be no innovations.

One of the Dhirubhaisms is “Bet on your people”. At the root of it, it entreats the reader to trust the employee to execute a job, after a judicious assessment of his calibre. But the trust that it advocates is that of complete faith and not half measures. Complete faith in the person’s ability to execute a project accommodating his weaknesses, not being ignorant of it. This is the uniqueness of a Dhirubhaism.

The various aspects of Dhirubhai’s character or Dhirubhaisms which should be practiced are optimism, think big and beyond, being a silent benefactor and trusting skilled people to perform their jobs independently.

One of the Dhirubhaisms or Dhirubhai’s philosophy mentioned by the author is “Bet on your people”. This principle may not be practically realized as people might take the generosity of the boss for granted and exploit the same for their personal or career benefits, which may not be beneficial to the firm always. Also, “Supply creates Demand” philosophy adopted by Dhirubhai was very much practical in his days when competition was scarce but in the current scenario it will be considered foolish. The economies of the world are trying hard to meet the existing demand; increasing the current demand with additional supply will lead to economic instability.

Easy-to-read (think big font, tiny chapters!) book on the basic philosophy of one of India's top businessman. I really liked the bit on "Be a silent benefactor"..especially in today's world of CSR where companies spend loads of money advertising their "good deeds"! I also enjoyed the chapter on "Supply creates demand"..as opposed to the common economic concept of "Demand creates Supply"! ..the guy took the risk of building factories with the production capacity of 10,000 tons of yarn when the national market was only 6,000 tonnes ..the market bloomed to absorb the excess supply, the product became more affordable..he achieved economies of scale, ended up having the lowest production cost compared to Europe and US (by almost half) and eventually started exporting yarn back to his technical collaborators! Overall, a good read..finished it overnight!!

An easy read, can finish it in an hour. Based on the author's true-life interactions with Dhirubhai Ambani. Parts of it are quite inspiring and educational, although some facts are repeated quite a few times throughout.

Before lunch I just dropped in my friend’s room to see if he will tag along. When he asked me to wait for 5 minutes I made myself comfortable and rather than reaching for today’s newspaper (that I was carrying to read later) I saw this thin book sitting on the study table. Nowadays I am all game for slick books as long as they are quality material. With the interesting name and some quick glance at the pages I decided it would serve no harm to read it. If you are an Indian or as a matter of fact any businessman it would never hurt you read just anything related to Dhirubhai. With that in mind the decision was made to do something I hadn’t done in years. First, I borrowed a book which my friend was kind enough to comply with. Second, I read a book which I have not bought and thus is not the part of my collection as of now. But not to worry, the book of this size and price can be added anytime later. The reading now part was the most important one.

It took me about an hour to complete it. In fact, the author himself claims at the end of the book that it should not take anyone more than 90 minutes to complete this book. Well that’s a USP for a good book. In addition the book shares a simple language and written in story mode as the author has shared most of his real life observations made during his dealings with Dhirubhai.

A G Krishnamurthy is the founder of Mudra Communications which is known for the epic fashion campaigns of Vimal fabrics in the 80s, the marketing nurturing of brand Rasna and the start of the one of a kind institution Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad(MICA). In 1980, Dhirubhai Ambani gave Krishnamurthy the mandate to start the best Indian advertising company for textile industry and the seed money of Rs. 35,000. The author remained closely associated with Dhirubhai ever since. Met him periodically to seek guidance and learn business acumen. That’s that about the author and his relationship with Dhirubhai.

The book is divided among 15 small 4-pagish chapters and each chapter has a one page modern art photograph related to the message conveyed in the chapter which should catch your attention. The chapters are simple Dhirubhai ethos like

• Roll up your sleeves and help
• Be a silent benefactor
• Money is not a product itself
• Be a safety net for your team
• Think Big
• Hold onto your dreams......
• Leave the professional alone
• Change your orbit, constantly
• Be positive etc...

The author has brought each point home with simple anecdotes and stories. An enjoyable read but can’t be rated higher on account of low amount of content it has in offer.

‘There are three Dhirubhai Ambanis,’ one of his fellow Gujaratis, a writer, told me. ‘One is unique, larger than life, a brand name. He is one of the most talked about industrialists., and for Gujarati people he has tremendous emotional and sentimental appeal. He is their ultimate man, and has inspired many emulators. The second Dhirubhai Ambani, is a schemer, a first-class liar, who regrets nothing and has no values in life. Then there is the third Dhirubhai Ambani, who has a more sophisticated political brain, a dreamer and a visionary, almost Napoleonic. People are always getting the three personalities mistaken.’ - From The Polyester Prince

This book is more about third personality and little bit of first and Second personality is fully omitted by the author.

A short, sharp, and inspiring tribute to one of India’s most iconic business minds. Dhirubhaism captures the essence of Dhirubhai Ambani’s leadership style through 15 simple yet powerful principles that defined his rise from a petrol pump attendant to the founder of Reliance.

This is not a biography. It is a focused distillation of the values and working philosophy that set Dhirubhai apart. His ability to dream big, his risk appetite, his instinct for timing, and his belief in the India growth story stand out throughout the book.

The language is informal and conversational, and the book can be finished in one sitting. While it does not go deep into the operational aspects of Reliance, it offers useful insight into the mindset behind the mission.

Ideal for young entrepreneurs, first-generation founders, and anyone who believes in building against the odds.

Dhirubhaism is a story of the work ethics Dhirubhai Ambani believes in. How a small town boy become the most successful businessman in India. He believe in some ideology and he follows it through out his life and most of the people around him believe that those ideologies has make him successful. The author Mr. A. G. Krishnamurthy is one the closest friend to Dhirubhai. In this book he discuss the ideologies of Dhirubhai and his success story due to those ideology.
