. This is partly a case of it's me and not you. I'm not going to star it because I quit at 35%... I did skim (barely) to the end and there are some parts that are pretty cool, but not enough to make me finish it. (OK i went back and gave one star because it pissed me off THAT much, ruined the first book for me) This series has worn out for me. I am just so tired of the BDSM crap. The odd spanking or tying down, blindfolding, that's all titillating, but pain, Uh NO, not my thing.
But anyways, there are other things about this story that turn me off; 1. Ronan (OK I'll elaborate more... he comes across as an immature teenage boy. Hopefully his character will grow, but I don't really care enough to find out). Every other chapter is Ronan windging on about something.
2. Micah's relationship with Sam is overshadowed by his relationship with his first wife. And what does Katarina have to do with the plot anyways??
3. Sam's character has become less and less interesting since the first book. Now she comes across like she's on Valium.
Soooo, the story does have a surprise twist in the end that suits Micah's character. And Sam and he do have the (not so surprising) surprise that was foreshadowed in the last book. That WAS sweet, but not enough to make me finish the book.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I don't know where to begin this review. The AKM story is amazing as are the characters. Micah is the key to all that happens in this series. The way the story unfolded was brilliant and the introduction of new characters flowed nicely. The story begins with a "bitch" slap to Micah's entire adult existence and unfolds with how he deals with it. I was pleasantly surprised by who is shaping up to be an enemy to the King and I can't wait to watch them get thwarted. What I really enjoyed was the further world building and the introduction of the Lycans. I also enjoy trying to guess who will be mating soon. Without giving away any pertinent details, I will say that I'm already assembling my dream team for the next book. Ms. Lynne can write some very strong female characters that fit right into this world. Alexis threatening Ramses was thoroughly enjoying, even though he basically ignored her, she didn't think twice. I have to say that King Bain is now one of my favorites in this series. I think he had downright the best scene for me in this book. The future of this series is shaping up to be a combination of action, suspense, comedy and as long as Micah and crew are around some of the sexiest vamps you'll ever read about.
I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC copy of this book and I loved it! I first became acquainted with Donya Lynne's books several years ago when I happened on "Micah's Calling" and I was hooked. I now own all the books in this series and wait impatiently for each new story. I will admit I was thrilled that, even though there are numerous characters featured in "Black", Micah is a prominent figure in the book. I love Micah. I love his dominant and somewhat prickly personality, I love how he supports and cares for his friends and I love how he loves and adores Sam...he's just a fabulous character. This book reacquaints us with characters from previous books, but also introduces us to new characters that I just know will have fantastic stories...can not wait!!! Black gave us a history lesson, but it also gives us a look into the future and I'm thinking that future is going to be so exciting. Thanks for the amazing story Ms. Lynne, can't wait for the next installment.
I really loved visiting with Micah again since he is my favorite out of all the King's men. What twists and turns this story has had to offer and there seems like more on the horizon for All The Kings Men. I look forward to new stories in this series. I've been in love with this series since the beginning. A great paranormal read - this series has a bit of everything in it. I fell in love with Micah's character from chapter one of the first book. A truly well written alpha male and Sam is the only female heroine I've liked in a really long time. She is strong yet sweet and very loving. The series is heating up and I really loved the Lycan story-line of being related to the ancients from Egypt, that was kinda cool and all the other wonderful surprises which I thought were coming and I guessed right. So glad its out in the open now within the story. As long as Donya Lynne keeps writing about Micah, I'll keep reading.
4.5 stars, really do wish for the option/ability to do this within the stars themselves. I really do enjoy this series and the characters a great deal. They have only continued to grow and gain more nuanced personalities while new characters pop off the page with lots of energy. The introduction of the new characters, as well as their situations, are very well integrated into the existing storyline with no major fuss. The backdrop of Chicago is perfect and one that I am very familiar with.
This book starts directly after the events in Bound Guardian Angel and finds Micah still reeling from the discovery he has a half-brother and that his father is still alive. His father is still suffering the loss of his mate and it affected the way his brother was raised and not in a good way.
As more secrets continue to be shared Micah finds that his life will be changing, but not necessarily in the ways that he hoped. Micah is devastated by some of the revelations and one coming from King Bain changes everything he ever thought about himself and his family.
The story begins 950 years ago in the midst of a battle that ends up defining much of Micah's life and how he handles things in the world. From there we jump to the present day and the reasons he is so happy to have Samantha in his life. The vampire world is a really strange and different place. When you think how much older Katarina was than Micah and realize that to them age really is just a number.
Love this series, love this author, love this entry, cannot wait for more. Enjoy this!

Books in the AKM Series, in reading order: Rise of the Fallen Heart of the Warrior Micah's Calling Rebel Obsession Return of the Assassin All the King's Men - The Beginning Bound Guardian Angel BLACK
•••••••••••••••
REVIEW: BLACK is the eighth installment in Donya Lynne’s contemporary, adult ALL THE KING’S MEN paranormal, romance series focusing on a group of vampire warriors, who work for AKM -a group of elite vampire warriors and mutant vampires brought together to save the humans and rid the world of the drecks- hybrid vampire shape shifters. This is Micah Black and the Black family’s continuing story, a story that changes the series arc shifting the focus on a new threat to the world of the vampire.
SOME BACKGROUND: The destructive and addictive nature of the vampire designer drug ‘cobalt’ has brought the drecks to the AKM’s front door. Each overdose pushes another vampire closer to the edge, and pulls the AKM vampire warriors further into a war that could potentially destroy everything and everyone they love.
Told from several third person points of view including Micah Black BLACK follows the latest in a series of revelations including the discovery that Micah’s father, Drake Black, a man Micah thought dead for close to a thousand years, was alive, and with it comes the introduction of a half-brother he never knew existed. As the war between the drecks and the vampires escalates with each cobalt overdose and vampire death, Ronan Black-Micah’s brother-goes rogue fighting a battle he has no hope of winning. A new species of werewolf will push one-time enemies together, and Micah’s true heritage will come full circle with King Bain’s latest revelations, offering Micah a new direction in his professional and personal life.
BLACK is a story line of family; of the fractured family dynamics between father and sons; the heartbreaking losses, and the potential ramifications of too many secrets and lies. With the introduction of the werewolves and lycans, Donya Lynne takes the AKM series in a new direction, with a more potent and serious threat to her beloved vampires. Ronan’s mate is but a dream away; and a lycan tracker discovers the who and what he has been looking (for). The premise is engaging, entertaining and revealing; the characters are spirited, edgy and energetic; the romance between Samantha and Micah is provocative and intense. BLACK introduces the reader to a newly, determined King , and with it the formation of a more aggressive team desperate not to go to war.

There are two things you can depend on when you read an AKM book: a dramatic, heart-pounding ending, and some serious meddling (in everyone else's affairs) by Micah Black. Since this story—appropriately named Black—is all about his family, Micah doesn't get to do as much meddling, but he does spend a lot of time right in the heart of the story's action. AKM stories are also always immersive reads, so Black flies by, leaving you wanting more of Micah, the AKM team, and even King Bain. The entire series up to this point takes place in something like 7 months, and Black covers barely a day, so there's a lot packed into this story.
Speaking of the vampire ruler, King Bain started out as a character with misguided (archaic) views. In those earlier books, he definitely wasn't my favorite guy. His role in Black develops his character and brings him some much-needed complexity. A lot of history is spun in this book, so you really need to have read ALL the AKM books that came before, even the prequel—named The Beginning—which falls at #6 in the series' reading order.
Black is more of a series transition novel than a dedicated romance for a single couple, and I like that about it. It sorts through a lot of vampire and dreck history and spins out new storylines that may even eventually seed other series in the same story world. This book tightly focuses on Micah and his family, and since he's one of my favorite characters of the series, I have zero complaints about that (although I didn't love the flashback scenes of him as a child). But don’t fret that this isn’t romantic! There are some seriously steamy scenes, and we get to spend a lot of quality time with Micah and Sam (his mate, from book 1 in the series). I really enjoyed circling back around to them as a couple and experiencing the changes happening in their life together.
All that said, this is in no way a standalone novel. To really enjoy this series, you need to start from the very first story in the AKM series, Rise of the Fallen.
Black is jam-packed with surprises and reveals—a must-read for fans of the All the King's Men series.
This was a deep dive into Micah and his family’s past. Micah is a fantastic character. A whimsical straight shooter with an outrageous wild side. This book really gets into the nitty gritty of Micah and his family tree, which throws Micah into a turbulent state of shock and disbelief. Great up all night reading! Keep them coming Ms. Lynne!
I don’t usually give out many 5 star ratings but this one definitely deserves it. Wow! I’m not sure where to begin with this review. The synopsis of the story wasn’t exaggerated. There are more twists and turns in this book within a matter of only a few days that my head was practically spinning. I could certainly see why poor Micah actually passed out at one point, not fainted, because then he would lose his man card. LOL!
I must admit that I have not read the entire series. Way back in 2012 I read the first two books in the series but it has been so long, and I have read hundreds, if not thousands of other books since, that I really was expecting to be a bit lost reading the 8th book in the series. For me it was like I was a complete newbie to the storyline since I honestly couldn’t remember a single thing from so long ago.
Other than the Prologue, the story starts right in at the end of the last book where a lot has happened, which I obviously knew nothing about. I will say that the author did such an incredible job explaining what I missed that I truly didn’t feel lost at all. I am now just anxious to purchase the previous 4 books in the series that I don’t already own so I can read the other couples stories.
This wasn’t just Micah and Sam’s book. LOTS of other characters from previous books had their chapters included, and I do mean LOTS. It was nice getting so many different points of view for someone like myself who wasn’t familiar with anyone.
I must say that I am not liking Memnon very much at all. I think it was horrible what he did to Hunter and his mate two decades before. I really hope that he gets his comeuppance in a future book, perhaps with Dr. Cora Snow as his possible mate? I would love to see him grovel.
So if you haven’t read any of the other books in this series, don’t let that stop you from picking this one up. There is a lot of action, steamy sex and surprises, enough that kept me up until 4am just so I could finish the darn book! I will be most anxiously awaiting the next book. If it’s not Memnon and Cora, perhaps it will be Hunter and Alexis or Ronan and Persephone. I want all of their stories and soon, so hopefully the author can write really, really fast.
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
This is book 8 in the series, and for this to make much sense, you must, I mean MUST read the others. Because they are awesome, and much happened in those books that is referenced here but not fully explained. And I told you to, okay??
Jumping straight in. Because wooooooeeeeeee! Ms Lynne did throw some curve balls!!
Micah found out in Bound Guardian Angel that he has a brother, Ronan and that his father is alive, not dead like he though these 950 years. BUT here?? He founds out much more.
He finds out his family tree, who he is related to and how. He finds out that seemingly impossible things really can happen. He finds out the Drecks have been doing much more than making cobalt blue to destroy the vampires, and that he is going to need some help to remove this new threat.
Enter stage right, The Lycans! These guys are BIG news, they have been aware of this new threat but trying to contain it. However, Ronan's antics with the ankh he stole from Micah have forced them to come clean. These guys are gonna be an awesome addition to this world, I know it.
I'm being deliberately vague in what I'm saying, I know I am but this book is FULL of massive spoilers and I don't want to ruin it for you.
But let me tell ya, its an A-MA-ZING read! One sitting, I read it in one sitting. Some things I saw coming, some I did not. Some things came from WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY out the left field. I also saw some pairings, that maybe haven't been discussed before. That I wanna see if I'm right. Can't wait for the next one!
Ms Lynne spends a lot, and I mean a LOT of time after writing her books, tidying them up, editing, editing and MORE editing, and as a reader, its frustrating having to wait so long between books. BUT also as a reader, it makes you appreciate the finished product, and this one really is FLAWLESS. All the major players have a say, and ya'll know how much I love that, even the Lycans and they really are so very very different. Can't wait for more of them!
Kind of a cliff hanger ending, but in a way only Ms Lynne can delivery.
I've been trying to find the words to describe how amazingly awesome this book is! Let me start by saying, rarely do I give ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, but HOLY COW!!! This book blew me away! It deserves every single one and more!
From the beginning, I've been captivated. I've been in a serious reading funk, and let me tell you guys, this book has brought me out of it. It has literally rekindled my love of reading. Donya's words, continued world building, twists and turns, and every thing else, kept me on the edge of my seat, wanting more. With every flick of my wrist, my jaw dropped or I would start laughing hysterically. And I didn't care if anyone looked at me weird.
What you can expect from this book is a roller coaster of emotions.
Not only your own, but those of the characters as well.
Poor Micah has a lot on his plate. Learning his father is still alive is only a fraction of the shit hitting the proverbial fan. Add to that the introduction of the lycans, and one hell of a reveal from King Bain, it's a wonder how anyone can stay sane!
Speaking of King Bain, I have never known him to be sexy until now. He nearly does a 360 that I did not see coming! Ah-mazing!
You will not be disappointed with this book! You truly outdid yourself with this one Donya, I absolutely loved it!
In this 8th book of the series, we find ourselves watching Micah and Malek trying to save Micah's home and the vampires that live within it. Who is attacking them and why? What happens this fateful day? Who is Ronan? What about Alexis, who is she? What I learned in reading this book was completely mindblowing. I am sooooooo looking forward to the next book in this series!!!! What happens with Ramses and Priest and the Lycans. What happens with the werewolves, what happens with Micah and Ronan. Oh yeah, when King Bain deigns to finally tell Micah things he needs to know and that were specifically kept from him, I waited to see how long it would be before Micah blew a gasket. You're going to have to read to see what happens. There were things that were brought up that reminded me of things from the previous books, but then also we see Hunter again in this book. Where has he been? Why? Who is Memnon to these guys? All I can say is you need to read the first 7 books of this series before reading this one. And you MUST read this one! Wow!
RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin' With M. Brennan.
Holy freaking gods what a book! This was one hell of a book. The Continuing Story for the king vampire. This book focuses on the Black Brothers. As we found out in the last bus Micah has a brother Ronin. If you have not read the first there were books in the series I would suggest you do. And it has a continuing story-line that might be confusing if you don't know what's going on.
There is a lot of information overload in his book. So my reviews going to be a little vague, as to not spoil the story. First Sam has the news for Micah and he has some for her. Some information overload forum and the other are quite nice for something she thought she wasn't going to be able to have for another 10 years may have just happened anyway. Then there is what the king unloads on them. Oh and let's not forget the werewolves man that is one freaked up mess. Mennen is not happy when he is awakened from his long sleep I am so ready for the next book.
Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too
"We've each had to face hell in one way or another. But we're still standing. We Blacks are strong motherf*ckers."
With each book in the series we see more and more characters come to life while seeing the characters we already know evolve and grow and watching as the story expands and changes and becomes more and more amazing.
Coming back to a story about Micah really helps bring a balance into the series as there have been so many new people it helps you feel like you still know what's going on and that the characters that brought you into this world still have a place in it. I loved seeing more to his story while still getting more of others and learning more about this wonderful world that has been created. The emotions are certainly a roller coaster ride throughout and all the different Revelations bring a shock to your system and get you even more excited to see what's coming with this series.
More is certainly the theme with my review and that is exactly what you get in this continuation to the series!
It's been a while since I have visited this series and I find that I love Micah and Sam's story just as much today as when I first picked it up. Readers should understand that this is not a stand-alone book, and the series should be read in order. What readers should know about the series is that Donnya Lynne has created a fascinating world of vampires and drecks, their sworn enemies since virtually the beginning of time. In book 8, Micah and Sam are hit with quite the revelations as things begin to heat up. War is upon the vampires and new allies are revealed.
What I like best in the series to date is the character development, the twist and turns to the complicated storyline, and how seamlessly the plot has begun to fall into place. The relationships are full of heat and steamy bedroom scenes, but one thing stands out, the sense of family and friends. The author has steadily been bringing all the characters together for what is to come.
This book contains something for everyone. Vampires, werewolves, romance, secrets, royalty, family drama ... you name it, Donya Lynne provides it in a fast paced story with lots of action, a little sex and some really kickass alpha characters. There are a lot of characters in the book and I was initially concerned that it might be hard to get them all sorted out, but it turned out that even that didn't matter because they all come together into one big story line. I probably would have known that if I'd started with book one of All the King's Men, but I confess, I'm one of those folks who likes to jump into the deep end of the pool, so books like this one that work pretty well on a stand-alone basis are my faves. I loved this book, though it might be a little too action and secret packed for bedtime reading. I sometimes found myself turning out the light and then turning them on again to find out what came next.
Black is a great continuation in All the King's men series. Micah is a complicated man and this story gives us some vital background into his past and develops into his present and future. He definitely brings a nice balance to the series. Donya has great world building and provides a wonderful story to escape into with lots of action, laugh out loud humor, secrets, drama, romance, vampires and lycans. What more do you need in a story?
I loved all the new characters introduced and was worried that it would be confusing but was surprisingly easy to follow. There were some twists and turns that I didn't see coming but leaves a nice set up for the next story to go in any direction. Looking forward to book 9.
This installment of the All the King's Men series seems to float a bit outside the previous books in storyline, until it doesn't. I loved getting more insight into Micah's past, his loves; his family. Some of the things learned in Black were a conclusion you could draw a line to from previous books but there was so much more! So many new faces who will be in our reading future, and I absolutely cannot wait to continue them! While this book is pretty far into an existing series, it could be read as a stand alone and not completely lose or frustrate the reader. In fact I think this book would definitely entice new readers into the series, and I ENCOURAGE it! Donya's paranormal Chicago is unique and inventive and completely sucks you in.
This book is totally amazing! Five stars are not enough! I loved reading of Micah's past. How he was as a little boy. So cute. How he became the vampire/warrior/man he is now. and Sam...I think she is the strongest heroine I ever read. She loves Micah so boundlessly, she is perfect for a man like him. They're perfect for each other. Micah finds out more about Ronan and Drake, he learns new things about King Bain, and Cordray (ha-ha). There are many other characters and events that turn Micah's world upside down. New threats and new alliances are about to arise. A lot of things happen that I didn't see coming. WoW! I feel like this is the start of a new beginning. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
I was given this book as a ARC for a honest review so hear it goes. I've been reading the AKM books I think from the beginning, and there just awesome books and a great series. As per usual the story revolves around Micah and that's just awesome. It's hard to write this and not reveal any spoilers . So all I can say is I love all of the new members of this book and glad to hear about some of the old members from previous books. I love to hear about Sam and Micah and I sure can't wait for more. To Ms. Donya your books are the best and keep our imagination going and the suspense for each and every one of your books to come. I'm so excited for the next book to be released.
wow . . . just WOW ~ Donya delivered another FABULOUS installment in the AKM series
FANTASTIC continuation of Donya Lynne's All the King's Men series that had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. So many secrets revealed that had me just as surprised as the characters who were experiencing them. Absolutely love a story with twists and turns, and Donya definitely delivered with BLACK.
In addition, Donya included the tender moments between Micah and Sam, and I am so excited for what the future has in store for them.
Thank you, Donya, for another wonderful story in on of my absolute favorite series. Looking forward to what comes next for Micah, Sam and all connected to AKM.
If you're a fan of this series, then this book will make absolute sense to you! If you've only read one or two books in this series, then I don't recommend reading this book as of yet since so many things occur in this book. Things that only true fans will know and understand without getting all mixed up and confused. Things are coming to a head and Micah, his family and friends are in for one helluva ride!!
Great read!
(FYI: I've read every single book in this series but that was before I began reviewing books, which is why most of the books either only have a star rating or no rating at all)
This is the eighth book in the series, and I enjoyed it as much as the first, if not more. I receive a free ARC, but have already pre-ordered my copy. The plot just keeps growing with each book. The characters are well written and develop more every time we see them. The characters are interesting, sometimes you love them and other times, hate them, but you always want to know what is going to happen to them next . This series has something for everyone...adventure, suspense, humour and love. I'm looking forward to number 9.
As always I can never get enough of AKM. In this epic continuation of their lives we are introduced to some very yummy characters that I can't wait to explore. As is needed with serial stories, this book introduces new characters to expand and enhance the story. Unlike most interim books this one does in no way feel like a stall before the story gets going again. Black is exciting and enticing and only left me wanting more. More Ronan to come, Yes Please!!!
I absolutely loved this book. So many new issues, both good and bad, not to mention new characters just put the icing on the cake. And Micah is coming into a new place in his life. Sam and the impending birth of twins is making him see things differently. And becoming Crown Regent....didn't see that one coming. All I can say is if you have not started this series of books you are missing out. I can't wait for the next one.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author for an honest review.
Well worth the wait! Tendrils of new stories about throughout this book. Good news for us , Donya's fans. So happy to reconnect with previous characters and tons of new ones. CANNOT wait for the next book in this series!!
What can I say - this was well worth the wait and this series continues to deliver big time.
Donya Lynne has become one of my favourite authors and she sure can deliver a story. This book has it all, action, intrigue, romance and a really good story line.
I don't know how long we will have to wait for the next instalment but I ain't going anywhere!
This book is incredible and wonderfully well written. Donya goes into so much detail and the story is so deep yet totally followable and could even be read as a stand alone. (But really who doesn't want to read all 8!) This series is funny, sexy, thrilling and intriguing!
Twista and turns galore from Donya Lynne in this latest AKM book. Too many to name and also I'm not into spoilers. Let's just say Micah and his family are way bigger than he thought and more varied than let on earlier. Great book and a wonderful way to pass the time, as you won't want to put it down. Now comes the wait for the next one!?!?!
Just when you think you know it all, surprise....can't wait for the next ...Donna Lynne has done it again ...series just keeps getting better and better ...so excited for the future....if your looking for a new series this one is it...
