"Holy God!"

I love Medieval time travel stories, but they're usually a hit or miss. This one in particular is a definite hit. I thought the cursed dress was a pretty original idea, and that was what kept me reading, getting down to the nature of the curse.

"True love and faithfulness
are but a lie.
Prove me wrong,
you must now try.
Fail, return the gown in which I
was betrayed,
And in your grave you will for
certain lay."

And who is responsible for the curse? Well, I have my theories about that. It seems that Fay has assumed the role of a nobleman's daughter, and the curse apparently affects the minds of all the players. How else would a complete stranger be able to immediately assimilate into medieval life?

The hero, Tristan, seems to be a jerk at first, but it's apparent he's railing against his attraction to the "mad" younger daughter of his liege. His genuine concern for Fay, although misplaced due to medieval era ignorance, is actually pretty sweet. The romance was sweet as well, I thought.

The clincher, for me, was the twisted cliffhanger at the end. It's lead me to some horrifying realizations that the somewhat positive ending might not be so positive after all. I have several plot theories rolling around in my head already! I MUST know what the curse has in store for poor Fay and Tristan! That is why I rated this 5 stars!

*I received an ARC from Dragonblade Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

This is one of those books where I wonder if I read a different version than everyone else.

description

While the basis of the story is interesting, the execution is just so off that it's hard to enjoy. The writing style is pretty choppy and juvenile. There's not a lot of depth; all the conflicts are surface problems. It was just kind of boring and didn't hold my attention.

Our heroine puts on an old dress and is magically whisked back to medieval times, where she learns that she's stuck in a cursed castle. To break the curse, she needs to prove that love really exists. She learns this from a journal that was left in her new room by the previous women who tried to break the curse. The journal also gives her information about people she'll meet and some things that will happen. One of my biggest gripes with this book, though, is that it's super obvious from the journal that the year the heroine goes back to will repeat endlessly until she breaks the curse. But for some reason, that information is the big climactic reveal at the end of the book. How on Earth did Fay not figure that out? It's pretty clear from the "I can't go through this again", "He liked her the first time", and "He doesn't recognize me now."

description

The relationship between the MCs is poorly done as well. There's no chemistry, but for some reason they're in love. They don't ever really get to know each other, and Fay is always looking for guys to keep on the back burner. Tristan is constantly hiding from her at his own keep, and for most of the book, he thinks she has mental problems. It just wasn't very romantic at all. And if you're looking for a steamy romance, this is definitely not it. They barely even kiss, and their two sex scenes last a paragraph. Not sure why the author included them at all.

description

And the author didn't even bother to try and keep her characters to the right time period. She has medieval peasants saying things like "comparison shop" and "wave of the future".

description

I think this book could have been so much more, but it just fell flat. I would have loved to read about Fay restarting from scratch with Tristan a few times. Or even giving up on him, and trying someone else. There's just so much unused potential with this book. A real disappointment. I most likely won't continue with the series because the ending was so meh on top of all the other problems. Not really interested in the cliffhanger. Could have been something better.

This is the first time I’ve read author Cassidy Cayman’s work. This particular series already has me engaged with its unusual plot, time travel, mystery, and Medieval setting. Even though it ends on a cliffhanger, I was smiling as I reached the end. But with the smile and last couple of paragraphs, Cayman hooks me for book 2. The series, I understand, is a three-book one.

Fay Drisdoll, is thrown back in time while helping her Uncle Randolph with a fashion show of medieval clothing at Grancourt Castle, a castle which has partially been restored. If she hadn’t had to model the six hundred-year-old wedding dress, she wouldn’t have suffered the curse which goes with it.

She is flung back in time only to find she isn’t the only one who has time travelled. Each girl who puts the wedding dress on suffers the same fate and each try to break the curse. Fay finds herself in a chamber, awakening at a desk with a piece of vellum under her folded arms and head.

True love and faithfulness are but a lie.

Prove me wrong, you must now try.

Fail, return the gown in which I was betrayed,

And in your grave you will for certain lay.

She takes from this poem she must find her true love. If she cannot, she’ll die. This bit of news and the whole setup is overwhelming to her. Additionally, notes other girls leave with the poem are disturbing, don’t make much sense. This is the mysterious part of the story.

According to the curse itself, if she put the gown back in its chest, that would mean she’d failed. “And in the grave for certain lay,” she repeated the last line of the poem. “Nope, won’t be doing that.”

She’s relieved when she meets her family for the first time.

So it was true. They knew her name. And they didn’t seem concerned that she must look different from the last person. And she was certain people spoke the Queen’s English quite a bit differently now than they did in her time. And yet she understood them perfectly well.

She looks at everything with fresh, excited eyes, making remarks that make her sound addlebrained. Fay learns Medieval life by fire. While her cushy life in the castle with her family hasn’t entirely prepared her for all the raw unwashed masses of people she meets, she is starting to enjoy her new life. She learns the fear of the times, possibly dying from infection, childbirth, consumption and something as simple as diarrhea.

Fay doesn’t know how much time she has, to find her true love, but she’s ready to try. She’s a girl with a heart of gold. She finds she’s attracted to two men and they to her. Sir Tristan Ballard is the owner of a recent inherited property, Dernier Keep. The other is a Lord Drayton with many holdings and wealth, and handsome enough. Fay can’t afford to make a mistake in her choice. She needs true love not amazing chemistry.

Cayman’s characters, well fleshed-out drew me into the story. From Marjorie, maid servant to Fay’s sister Anne, always talking gloom and doom, to romantic Batty who’s a great friend and maid to Fay and also has her eye on Tristan’s squire, Brom. The characters I got very attached to, as did Fay, were her older sister, Anne, a wise, kind soul and Tristan, a man of honesty and a pure heart. He’s also a man who can’t believe his luck with Fay’s forward advances!

This story will have you crying, no doubt. It’s also has its silly moments. One such one is when Brom, Tristan’s squire tells of what he heard about Fay. He said she reads a lot. This is particularly bad for women because it’s harmful to their lady humors. This comment plays a great role in Tristan’s understanding of how odd Fay seems at times.

The publisher provided an advanced reading copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

No good deed goes unpunished! Fay, as a favor to her beloved uncle, agrees to wear a historical wedding dress. One slight problem-she travels to the past and is given the task of breaking a curse. She meets and falls for Sir Tristan. The feeling is mutual, but oh what a wicked tale this curse weaves. Fay finds a journal, which reveals a very startling content. The multiple twists in the book are wonderful. The problem-there is no happily ever after.

If your reading this your dead.....those are the words Fay Driscoll wakes up to.....except she is not dead she is alive in another time, 1398 to be exact.
After trying on a cursed medieval gown in the crumbling ruins of Grancourt Castle, she's sent back to the middle ages. The only way she can save herself and those around her is to prove that love exists and many have tried before her and failed. Fay is determined to give it her all and prove the curse wrong. When a hot new Knight shows up at the castle she figures she's got it made until she finds out he's a real jerk, but that doesn't stop her she's going to try anyways. As time goes by she can't stop thinking about Sir Tristan.
Sir Tristan Ballard has recently inherited a keep and it's lands. He is determined to keep it no matter the cost. it's suggested that he marries one of his new liege lord's daughters to forge a stronger alliance against those who are trying to take what's his. He's not especially interested in getting married especially not to the youngest daughter of Grancourt Castle. He's fairly certain that the strange girl is not right in the head. He wants no part of her and yet he can't seem to keep his mind or hands off of her. Can Tristan and Fay fall in love? Can they break the curse?
Well that's for you to find out.
Cassidy Cayman is absolutely brilliant and a master story teller. Her time travel books never cease to amaze me. The ending was incredible. What a cliff hanger and one I never expected. This is one amazing author and if I could give this book more then 5 stars I would

Curious Time travel romance

This story involves a cursed dress that evidently kills the wearer in their time and transports then to the 14th Century. The storyline it's a bit weak regarding the journal entries where the traveler finds themselves in another time and space. In some places, it appears as if the author was not only repeating themselves but couldn't resolve the conflict between the romance, time travel, and timeline. While the concept was interesting, found the storyline in need of dire development and major editing help.

I had high hopes for understanding more about the reason behind the cursed dress without having to waste time reading poor following novels that never resolve the storyline and possess weak character development. This story jumps around, can be hard to follow, and while it tries to drive home the concept of true love dominating all, even curses, it never resolved itself.

Instead, it continues in more books...repeating the same concept without resolution. This leaves this author and editor to ask how many times can you spin a story? Evidently for author Cayman, the answer is as many as she likes. I was sadly disappointed. I thought this read like an introductory writing project that needs more work.

I had such high hopes. I was sorely disappointed.

4.5 Cliffhangers Suck Stars

“If you’re reading this, you’re dead.”

Did that get your attention? It got mine! And when I saw this was a time travel romance, I was hooked! “Endearing” is the first book by Cassidy Cayman I’ve read, and I loved it! I read it in one day! That being said, make sure you read the author’s note…did ya do that?

Ok, the author’s note said there is a “mild” cliffhanger. I do believe our definitions of “mild” are not the same! I was on the verge of tossing my Kindle across the room when I read the last page. Why!!!!!!!! Why do authors do this to us!!!!!!!!!!! *sobbing*

*Sniff*Sniff* now that I’ve pulled up my big girl panties, let me tell you that this is a fantastic story! I could not put the book down! I’m now *cough*cough* stalking the author’s page hoping to glimpse when the next installment of Sir Triston and Fay will be available! I must have!

Recommend this story, but if you are NOT a fan of cliffhanger’s wait till the next book comes out!

Addicting new take on time travel tales..

Wow... Not your usual time travel book. Helping her uncle out at a fashion show to help his passion of resurrecting a crumbling manor keep... Fay is meant to wear one of the designs.... Upon going to the room to change, she finds a chest with a period style dress. She blacks out and comes too with her head on a desk and a scroll saying "if you're reading this then you're DEAD". Holy moly!!! The letter tells her she must find true love or give up forever. Apparently others before have tried and failed. Be warned though... This book does end on a cliffhanger, but it's oh so worth it. In her original time line she was orphaned and raised a single child by her beloved uncle and aunt. In this new timeline she gains a sister and a whole cast of characters. Who is with her, who is against her? Where the heck did this curse originate from? Get ready to take this brilliant ride....

Ugh, cliffhanger. I loved this story. I can't buy the other 2 books but I'm going right now to check out reviews for the next 2 books. It is the best I will get.
This is one of the better time travel romance books that I've read.
I had to leave and go and read all the reviews for book 2 and 3...lol.. it was the only way I was going to get over the cliffhanger in book 1 that I just finished.

Spoiler

I had to know who the new girl was that appeared. Fay wasn't able to break the curse upon the castle. Time started all over again and brought another young lady from the future back to the 1300s.
Thank goodness for Goodreads. That was one of the cliffhangers I've ever encountered.
Oh, there was a couple spots I swiped the pages a little faster because of the lack of communication. When they just jump to conclusions and don't talk it drives me insane...so I fast forward.
There was a lot of twists in this book that I never expected.

A romp back in time!

Loved this story about a woman named Fay Driscoll who lives in modern day England and while assisting with a fashion show fundraiser in a historical castle, ends up in the same spot only 600 years earlier. Now this plot has Fay meeting a cast of colorful characters and it includes a gorgeous knight named Tristan. The tale revolves around a curse, an unknown villain, a bad guy, an enchanted wedding dress, and true love!
This book is such a fun tale, and really unique, making it thoroughly enjoyable. It does have a bit of a cliffhanger ending, but I am already waiting for the next book in this series. I highly recommend this book to romance and historical romance readers who would enjoy a bit of time travel, humor, and some mystery all in one entertaining read!

I have always loved Cassidy Caymans books to the point of devouring them one after another. Her develops her characters in a way that allows the reader to get inside the character to feel their emotions, to realize their wants, their needs and their fears. This book is a fabulous first in her new series entitled, Knight Everlasting. It runs the gamut on the characters and readers emotions. In my opinion, you will never be disappointed in her writing/storytelling skills and abilities. She is a master at holding your attention until the end, and Drawing them into the next novel/adventure which usually seems to extend and expand on characters in the previous book(s). I am eagerly anticipating Book 2 of this series. You won't want to put this one down to go cook dinner.

A nice read.

I read a lot of time travel romances and overall I feel like this book has all the things I enjoy about that genre. I liked the curse element, the characters and the romance was good without being too unbelievable. The reason for the 3stars is I felt the book lagged in some places. The heroine would drag her feet a lot due to the curse and it made for a slow pace with little progress at times. I ended up skipping to the last chapter once I got 80% through the book due to just needing to get to the point after a lot of back and forth with little answers given to satisfy me. It sounds like I hated the book but really I would read it again now that I know everything now and can read it with more patience.

People keep mysteriously dying at the Grancourt Castle ruins, including Jordan McCurdy’s little sister, Sophie. When an eccentric historian tries to tell Jordan that Sophie might not only still be alive, but existing in another time, he jumps at the chance to rescue her. This is a time travel novel which I really enjoyed reading. I liked the characters and the story. Jordan travels back in time looking for his sister who they thought had died. It is said in order to break the curse you have to find true love. Cassidy Cayman is a new author to me and this was my first novel of hers. It was intriguing, funny and just enjoyable to read. With that being said I suggest you read the first two books in the series, but I would definitely recommend this book!

Everlasting Love

Fay is with her Uncle at an old castle helping him raise money to restore it. They need one more girl to put on an old wedding dress. BIG MISTAKE!!! The next thing she knows she is still in the castle but it was not falling apart. Still in shock she finds a book that says " If you are reading this. You are dead" There is a list of names of people that live there. So many things happened that a person would enjoy reading BUT DON'T READ THE LAST PAGE!!
This book I would recommend!!

A Time Travel Romance

A cursed wedding dress causes Fay to travel back in time. Only true love can break the curse. This is the first of three books in the series, and it does end on a cliffhanger. I normally dislike cliffhangers, the fact that there are two more books gives me hope. Do not fear; the cliffhanger is not unhappy. It's just a mystery.

Enjoyed it!

I enjoyed this book, not sure that the cover reflects the story though. I read the excerpt from the next in this series, and realised I didn't relish more of the same but with different H&h's, and so I won't be carrying on with this series. But this was a good story, and a different take on the time travel genre.

The most horrible ending in my long history of reading books. I Dont even see a sequel, that would explain

Worst ending I have seen, in my many years of reading, with no sequel to even make ending bearable. Will avoid this author

Oh, no! Open ended ending!

How I hate books that have no ending and force you to buy the next novel to find out what happened to the characters! But on to the next I will. I am invested to them and the story line.

A wonderful time travel story. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. This one ended abruptly,

leaving a lot of questions unanswered, and the story hanging in midair. I have to see what happens in the next book in the series.🐦

Ending unexpected

I enjoyed this book and kept turning the pages. The ending wasn’t what I hoped it would be but I understand why the author ended it the way she did.
Still, I would recommend this well written story.

Good potential storyline and good writing. The characters weren't very interesting to me, definitely not 'hero' or 'heroine' material in my opinion. I stopped reading a third of the way through though so maybe it gets better. I just didn't want to spend the time.
