Marry—or else.

Navy SEAL Brian Lake is out of luck. Going rogue on his last mission landed him on a fast track out of the Navy—years too soon to have saved up enough money to buy the ranch he’s always wanted. Without a career—or the cash to start over—Brian’s options are few, until Army general Augustus Reed steps in with an intriguing new mission—a permanent one.

Ignored by her absentee father, duped by thief he appointed to oversee her family’s ranch, Cass Reed is done with men for good. From now on she’s determined to run Two Willows herself, so when her father sends a Navy SEAL to fix up her house, she vows to run him off her land as soon as possible. But Brian’s just as determined to stay, and he’s in a far different league than the men she’s met before.

Brian’s ready to do anything that will earn him a share of a prosperous ranch—even take a chance on marrying the General’s daughter. And he soon realizes it won’t be a hardship to marry Cass. She’s everything he’s ever dreamed of in a woman—and Two Willows is everything he wanted in a ranch.

But he’s not the only one who wants Two Willows—and Cass.

Will falling in love be the most dangerous mission of all?

Another series set in Chance Creek and I am sure you're figuring out that Cora Seton is a favorite go-to author for me. Trust me, romance lovers you will not be disappointed!

Brides of Chance Creek begins with a U.S. General receiving letters from his deceased wife who encourages him that it is time their five daughters settle down and find good men to help on their maternal families ranch. The General soon decides Navy SEAL, Lieutenant Brian Lake is just what headstrong eldest daughter, Cass, needs in her life. But there is going to be fireworks- metaphorically and literally and this Navy SEAL might just be in over his head.

My goodness this was filled with plenty of action and Cora Seton manages in 10 chapters to establish the personalities of all 5 daughters. I am definitely going to be checking out more of this series in the future.

DNF at 26%.

I wasn't expecting the next Booker prize winner from this book, just some light SEAL turns cowboy romance. What I got made my blood boil so much that I had to DNF for the sake of my blood pressure.

General Reed has five daughters, after his wife died he couldn't bear to return to the ranch so he left the girls with a series of female guardians and ranch foremen to look after them and the ranch. Understandably peeved by effectively losing both parents the girls acted out and drove each and every one off the land.

Now the misogynist dinosaur has decided that (rather than actually go and see his children) he will find the girls husbands by selecting a group of former SEALs/ army guys etc who have blotted their copybooks with the services and giving them a carrot or a stick - marry my daughters or get dishonourably discharged, but hey you get one-fifth of a huge ranch. He has also had these guys working for weeks in a room decorated with montages of each of the daughters at their various hobbies interspersed with photos of the ranch - basically trying to subliminally get these guys interested in his daughters before he issues his ultimatum.

There is also a ludicrous plot involving the dead mother and one of the sisters having second sight and a maze with a stone obelisk at its heart which answers peoples questions.

First, all of the girls appear to have no sense whatsoever, four of them act like children and expect Cass the eldest to be a surrogate mother (cooking, cleaning, running the ranch, repairing the house etc) while they do whatever they please. Cass on the other hand enables this behaviour by picking up after them and hiding the truth from them. Each and every one is either dating a cheater/ loser/ waster/ thief/ moocher or has just been ripped off by one.

The first victim of the General is Navy SEAL Brian Lake, his father and brother are moochers who have disappointed and let down their wives, he thinks it's a genetic fault and vows he will never do the same to a woman. But when the General dangles the bait of a beautiful woman who likes cooking and other domestic tasks (upchuck) and a share of ranch he's all in.

First, the General irritated me beyond belief, too much of a coward to face up to his problems like a man he hides behind employees and blackmailing men under his command.

Second, Cass and the other women were ridiculous caricatures: the mother-figure, the fey artsy one, the teen rebel etc.

Third, Brian is the sort of man who thinks women are Madonnas or whores, he's content to sleep with lots of pretty women but they're not marriage material, only Cass has that"open, fresh, healthy country glow that told a man this was a woman you could make a life with" - really? No woman thinks like that, except Cora Seaton apparently, when looking at a man.

Fourth, Brian seems to think he can waltz up to the farm to repair the house (cunning ruse, not) on the General's command and have some authority, he thinks that the women are undermining his authority. He's too much of a gentleman "to dump one of the women out of their chairs, or to demand to be served". Really? You foist yourself on people uninvited, you tell them you are staying in the house without their consent and now you expect to eat their food, again uninvited? And given that he has not been invited to eat with them his attitude is frankly appalling. The correct response is 'may I have some food?' not just assume you are entitled to eat - what if Cass had cooked five steaks instead of a stew - would he have assumed he could have just eaten one of the girl's steaks?

I can see Brian is going to save Cass, save the ranch, etc but frankly the misogyny and the woo-woo gave me indigestion so I'm tapping out.

3 What I Signed Up For Stars
* * *
I have a confession. When I see a freebie, I am more than likely to click on it. Cora Seton offered some of her books and I like a Freebie Ho, clicked right away. I share all of this because reading Cora Seton has become a guilty pleasure.

Cora Seton has a huge career and following.
She writes about cowboys, farms, and servicemen. I have had a little experience with cowboys because I did some Western riding back in the day...But farming and military service was not something I experienced.

So when I read Seton, it is like going back in time and watching what I think of farms and the service from the movies I saw as a kid. I just take what she gives me, set aside any of the current things I would get upset about, and just enjoy the ride. Because sometimes it clears the mind to let yourself take what the author is giving at face value.

This series has a General who was deeply in love with his wife. They lived on a farm that was handed down through the wife's family. There is a mystical element to this tale and throughout the series. There is a maze with a standing Stonehedge-like stone in the middle, five daughters all with special talents and personalities, and this farm and town.

The mother/wife has "second sight" and this ability has allowed her to know the General will not do well with her early passing. She knows he will run from his girls and hide his pain. The General is a domineering man and not able to handle emotions well. He has made a career of barking orders so when he decides with the guidance of his late wife, his daughters need to have help at the ranch and finding love, he comes up with a plan.

He will see what deserving servicemen are out there that the military may have missed judged and put them under his command. These men will become the future partners of his daughters. He has a large ranch to dangle and the redemption of their military careers. Marry his daughter, he will fix the man's standing in the military...but there is a catch...because these women are feisty, have been running the ranch on their own for years and all five daughters have to accept these men or no deal.

In this first entry, we have Cass who has taken over being the one who ran the home part of the ranch...she has mothered all of her sisters and worked herself to the bone. She had a horrible experience with the man who was working as the overseer of the ranch...and now she and her sisters want nothing to do with any men.

Navy SEAL Brian Lake made a judgment call. Do something humane or follow orders. He did what his heart and mind told him to do and that took him off his career path with the Navy. He had wanted to buy his own ranch once his time in the service was done but now without the funds, it is clear that is a dream taken away. That is until the General offers him a new mission he can't refuse...

This story is of Cass and Brian. We also get the set up for the entire series, the mystical feeling of Two Willows. It had some rough moments with my logic but then again...it also had a huge dose of wish fulfillment and heart. Like I said earlier, these stories kinda grow on you and I ended up reading the entire series.

I was doing this as an audiobook and something is not working right and it won’t download the whole book only the first 5 chapters but I can tell you by those 5 chapters that it is not a book for me.

Completely unrealistic premise for a series. I decided to just DNF it since it wasn’t downloading anyways.

Read for Smutathon round 5- 2020 challenge!

Square- Out of Comfort Zone

Well... I was close to putting this one down at the halfway mark. But, I gritted my teeth and witnessed quite a good ending to an OK story. The main premise is an Army General has five daughters that he wants to find some strong partners for and so, instructs a navy SEAL called Brian to fall in love and marry his eldest daughter Cass. However, she is very sceptical and tries to hold the family household together. Lots of shocking events happened throughout. One of the five sisters had some paranormal elements to her. Most of the interactions and behaviour came across quite immature at times. Glad I stuck around to finish the action-packed last chapter. Not a series I would continue!

Paige's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

This story focuses around Cass and Brian but being the first in a series, the author does a good job introducing the characters that will be involved in this series. The reader is given a outline of what we can expect in the next books.

Cass has had to shoulder most of the responsibility at Two Willows, Ranch since their mother's death and their fathers abandonment. She loves her sisters but is struggling with them, their relationships and dailey life. Due to her mother's forsyth and his friends (spies) in the area, her father realizes this and puts together a plan for his family.

Brian is called upon by the General and makes his way to Two Willows. In the beginning, he knows something more is going on this ranch but the Reed sister's don't trust easily. With his charm and perseverance, he manages to break down their walls one by one.

Cass and Brian had a bit of instant love that I didn't feel but I liked that this couple was willing to work with the other, share their hopes, fears and trying to make their relationship work. Their love and commitment grew .

I liked the drama and suspense that the author created. It kept the story interesting without creating made up drama and angst between the Cass and Brian. I also liked the wishing stone, the hedge maze and the magical world that was created.

I'm definitely looking forward to read more about the Reed sister's and the men who love them.

ARC provided without expectations.

Once again Cora Seton has kicked off a great series set in Chance Creek. This series features five sisters living on the Two Willows Ranch. Their father, the General, has decided that each of the girls needs to get married and he has just the men in mind! Under his command are 5 service men who desperately need a second chance before their military career ends. So with the promise of an honorable discharge, the General is sending each man on a final mission. They are each set out to woo and then marry one of his daughter's and help run the ranch. And if they happen to find love then all the better. In this case, the first mission is led by Navy SEAL Brian Lake to marry the oldest daughter, Cass. If you've read any of Seton's other Chance Creek books you will recognize some familiar characters in the background. This was a great contemporary romance as Brian had to convince Cass that he loved her and not the ranch that she would inherit. Especially since she and her sisters have plenty of reason to distrust anything that involves their father. I'm definitely looking forward to more in this series since each sister will definitely be a handful for any man.

I received this ARC from the author and am voluntarily offering this review.

I really like Cora Seaton. Her books are romantic, funny and have a touch of mystery. This one has all the elements, but it is just too long. I liked it well enough and the paranormal touch was believable. Cora likes to force the issue in her books and here we have a General calling the shots and making his daughters and the servicemen under his direct control dance to his tune.

General Augustus Reed is a man on a mission - get his five daughters married off to the right men, and to the General that means military men. He has a group under his control at the moment and he is ready to start his campaign. First up is a Navy SEAL.

When Navy SEAL Brian Lake went against orders on his last mission, he knew he was in for some severe punishment, he just hoped it didn't mean the end of his career. He needed to continue as SEAL and was saving up to buy a ranch when his active duty time was over. Now, his only prayer is to impress the General. When the General lays out his mission, Brian isn't sure if this is a good idea, but he is out of options and accepts the challenge.

Cass Reed has been running the ranch and her four sisters since she was 15. There have been overseers and governesses, but Cass has been in charge and has always run them off with very little trouble. The General has been a distant part of their lives and now that the latest overseer was a liar and a thief she is determined to run Two Willows without anyone else trying to tell her what to do. When Brian shows up with orders from the General to fix up the house, Cass is determined to run him off too. But Brian has a vested interest in staying and Cass is no match for fate.

Well I made myself finish it

This book could have been amazing
But it was just so damn unbelievable. I believe that a book like twilight had a better chance of being reality than this one. Standing stone, mazes, fortune tellers, premonitions, secret drug gang infiltrating the ranch, firework addictions, spec forces issued as husbands to naive women, and falling in love with barely any common dialogue and in a matter of a couple weeks... it was just too damn much to absorb. Good action tho and I loved Brian, sexy beast but not even I fully believed he loved her and not the “life he was getting”
I say skip this one. It didn’t even have the happy loving scenes that make all the bad storylines take back stage. Boo

It was just ok. I just did not really feel the chemistry. The premise is off putting (men being forced to marry the general’s daughters to clear their service record) and the women do not know. Give me the yucks.

Even putting aside the majority of unrealistic situations in this book and how they came to be, I would certainly overlook the silly "fantasy" elements in detriment to entertainment, which has happened in my experience in reading many other novels.
However, the author's writing style is unappealing to me and I won't read more by her.

Issued to the Bride: One Navy Seal is the first book in the Brides of Chance Creek series. The premise of the series is that General Reed has five daughters. After his wife died, he came into possession of a set of letters she left for him all with dates in the future. As he reads through the letters, he is told by his wife that he has to find husbands for his daughters. (It seems his wife could see the future). The General finds five soldiers who have messed up in their military service. Each guy is a perfect match for each of his daughters. He offers them a deal. If they marry his daughters, they will be discharged honorably and will receive part of his successful ranch.

This is Cass and Brian's story. He is sent there to help a reluctant Cass fix up the house and to put things right at the house. He is also there to find out who is trying to mess with the ranch. I thought this was a really cute romance. Brian had been staring at Cass's picture for months before he met her, so for him his quick fall was easy. Not so much for Cass. She had been hurt too much in the past and was reluctant to try again. She also has a lot of unresolved issues over the loss of her mother. I loved them together and loved watching Brian win Cass over.

There is a little mystery, some nail biting action and a touch of mysticism thrown into the mix. . I loved the humor and steamy attraction. It's definitely worth picking up if you haven't read it yet. I'm putting the rest of the series toward the top of my TBR Pile immediately.

When Brian Lake, soon to be ex-Navy SEAL is given new orders for his last mission when General Reed tells him he will be Issued to the Bride: One Navy SEAL and he is sent to the General's Two Willow Ranch in Montana to help his daughters.

Cass Reed is the oldest and when her mother died she became the protector, substitute mother, housekeeper and guardian for her four younger sisters. Now in their mid-twenties all five girls have found bad boys of the worst kind and their father has sent Brian to 'fix the house' and get the situation under control.

The situation escalates as one after another the sisters have problems with their boyfriends. One guy keeps taking a car for his delivery business, one is trying to get the sister to pose nude and sell the pictures, one is manufacturing drugs and one hits the sister. Brian has his hands full sorting the mess and working on Cass, who has sworn off men too. The mystical beliefs of all the girls, a maze and prophecy stone in the middle for extra fun.

The fast pace, the good qualities Brian shows and the sweetness of the five girls makes this an fun book with a happy ending, of course. I highly recommend it to romance fans.

The best thing about books and reading them is anything can happen, so just like that Cora it does with this amazing book. She makes the impossible possible. All the naysayers need to go away, because they say things like it’s unrealistic or no one acts that way. In this story the girls are young and naïve but I love every bit of their growing process.

5 sisters live on their parents cattle ranch. Each one has such horrible taste in dating.. Book 1 starts with the oldest daughter who has taken over since her Mother died 10 years ago. The ranch is a special place, the sisters are all amazing. Dive right into the maze garden and their family stone that’s in the heart of the maze. The stone gives answers to anyone who asks it a question about love and life. There are so many mystical signs within the heart of the maze garden.

The General is the girl's father and he has a secret mission to get each one of his daughters married, unrealistic yes, but oh so much sexy passionate fun! I really really enjoyed this book.

The initial foray into a series that details the outcomes of orchestrated marriages for the estranged daughters of a father whose military career has always seemed to take priority over any need his family felt. Even when their mother died the man never came back after her funeral and any grieving done was without support from the girls one surviving parent.

To say there are bitter or harsh feelings for The General as he is known throughout the story would be an understatement of epic proportions. To say that growing up without a steady male presence in the now young women's life would also explain the reason why their choices in men fall short of showing any sense.

Throughout the book we are made aware over and over the reasons for the Reed sisters failure to forgive their father for his perceived lack of care for them. We are also made aware that sometimes things are not what they seem and trust should not be given blindly.

A tale of family, friendships, lies, truths and most of all relationships with or without any issues clouding ones judgement.

This is my first Cora Seton book. At first I was going to give it four or three stars because I hated the father so much. Then, I realized that Ms. Seton's writing had made me dislike him (though I suppose there is a possibility of his redemption)., so hence five stars.

Case is the oldest of the general's daughters and her father sends her Brian, a soon-to-be ex Navy SEAL. The romance is satisfyingly predictable. The mystery was a pleasant surprise. I could not guess how the problem would be solved.

Like I said, this was my first Cora Seton. Does she have a military background? Spoiler: The firefight read like Robert Crais or an episode from "Blue Bloods".

This was an enjoyable start to a new series. I hope to read the rest of the series at some point in the future.
Brian is a SEAL working for the General who is sent to Montana to help his daughters with their ranch. Cass is the daughter that Brian sets his sights on.
The chemistry between them is wonderful and I loved reading as Brian helped each one of the sisters with some tricky predicaments.

Swoon worthy

Cass and Brian’s story. This had more twists and turns then a roller coaster. But with their father trying to micro manage his daughters and the ranch from half a world away is it any wonder that things had gone to hell. All the men in their lives criminal and using the sisters for their drug operation. When Brian showed up things turn around and the sisters take a stand.

Everything that the General is doing makes me angry. I know deep down he is doing things for the best interest of his daughters, but he could handle it a different way.

While the General did bug me, overall I enjoyed the book. The storyline kept my attention, and the end of the book has me wondering what will happen in the next installment. My hope is that by the time the series wraps up, the General will be able to visit Two Willows and reconnect with his daughters.

I love Cora Seton's books and was excited to start this new series. This is about 5 sisters who live on a ranch in Chance Creek, Montana. They are unmarried adults with their only parent being a general in the military who they rarely see since his work is very important to him. He also hasn't wanted to go back to the ranch after the death of his wife. So the girls are running it even with The General sending overseers - who the girls run off. Cass is the oldest and feels she has to look after everything - the other girls included.

The General doesn't think girls can run a ranch so he sends Brian to marry Cass, then oversee the ranch. He's suppose to win her over while making repairs. She doesn't know he was sent to marry her, just that The General sent him and he's a good worker. Brian's not thrilled with being sent away but he's not given a choice and he has always wanted to own a ranch so if he has to leave the military, this is the place to go.

This book has a bit of a paranormal twist which is different from Ms. Seton's other books. One of the girls is able to feel what is happening. For example, she knows if someone is coming or can feel if there is danger.

I liked Brian. He was a nice man, hardworking and capable. Cass bothered me. She was too supersticious and thought she had to do everything her mother used to do. I didn't see what Brian liked about Cass so I didn't get how he loved her at first sight. While The General was great at his job he was a terrible parent.

As Cora Seton likes to do, she's set up a series where 5 sisters have to get married. Let's see how other other girls get hooked.

Please note I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

It never ceases to amaze me as to how an author can spin a tale from a thread of an idea, then continue to spread that idea into a series, then another, etc. creating a whole town worth of stories that once you start reading, you find impossible to stop, and of course, that is exactly what Ms. Seton has done with her numerous series revolving around Chance Creek. This is the first of the new series, and WOW! What a punch it packs! Cass has been running the family ranch since her mothers' passing over a decade ago, her father, the general, going AWOL as far as the family is concerned, quietly ruling from the background of his military offices. She has done her best to raise and take care of her sisters, but is starting to feel the pressure falling on her shoulders lately. It would seem that she simply can't keep up with the maintenance, and even worse since the last overseer her father sent decided to steal from the ranch's coffers. And that would seem to be the least of her worries. When a knock at the door brings Brian into their lives, she's not sure she's ready to trust a man again. Especially one the General has sent, and definitely one that proclaims he's there for her, and to marry her! A great tale complete with a bit of violence, humility, compassion, action and of course, the love of family and friends, and a good man. Definitely a must read. Looking forward to the next in the series. Which one of the remaining military men will the General send next?
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily giving my honest opinion.

Honestly didn't think I'd make it through, but it turns out I actually enjoyed this weird little story.
A soon-to-be-ex Navy SEAL is commanded by his General to 'fix the house and marry his daughter'. Cass is the oldest of five sisters, aged between 26-21, they all have their own little quirks, including paranormal senses and there's even a magic rock with predictive powers.
Cass is the homemaker, the 'mother' to them all since their own passed away. With yet another overseer gone - this time one who did away with their cash, Cass is left to put everything back together while her rebelling sisters make their own mistakes with the men they know.
Brian made a mistake, now he's pushing paper until the Navy kick him out. For weeks he's been studying the General's photographs. Falling in love with the ranch and lusting after the eldest daughter.

Honestly, this got a little crazy. So much going on at once, Brian and Cass's instalove.. and at the mention of those weird woman who dress like Jane Austin characters I really doubted I'd finish this one, thankfully none of our Reed sisters wear ridiculous gowns, but one of them makes them!
I'm honestly interested in reading more of this series and in meeting the remaining military men who will also be sent to the ranch to marry.
