Twice Bitten

Rate this book

Thrilling, witty, and oh-so-sexy, Lynsay Sands’ Argeneau novel brings together a beautiful Immortal and the man who is her destiny…

For someone who’s been around for over a hundred and forty years, immortal Elspeth Argeneau hasn’t done a whole lot of living. Now that she’s moved away from her controlling mother, she’s tracking down rogue vampires and enjoying some overdue freedom. A fling would be fun. A life mate can wait. Yet to Elspeth’s surprise, her landlady’s hot grandson checks both boxes.

Wyatt fell instantly in love with Elspeth four years ago. He’s stunned to run into her again, especially as she has no memory of him. Then again, there are a lot of things about Elspeth that don’t make sense, like the miraculous speed with which her wounds heal. And the chemistry that transforms every touch into an explosion of desire. With mysterious “accidents” besieging Elspeth, the ex-Special Forces soldier appoints himself her bodyguard. But time is running out to uncover the truth about her enemies—and rediscover the man determined to love her for eternity.

Title: Twice Bitten
Series: Argeneau #27
Author: Lynsay Sands
Release date: March 27, 2018
Cliffhanger: No
HEA

When I first started exploring the paranormal genre years ago, Lynsay Sands' Argeneau series is one of the first I discovered. (We're on book twenty seven, guys. This series is no joke.) You would think after all of this time taking a hiatus from the long continuing storyline, there would be some confusion. I admit, I was wondering if that issue would arise here. If you're like me and want to return to the Argeneau world, don't hesitate. Ms. Sands did a wonderful job integrating me back into recent events, and refreshing me about her immortals without affecting my interest in the central plot.

I liked the fact that the immortal in this scenario was the female. It's not exactly uncommon, but more often, it's the other way around. Elspeth Argeneau was strong, level-headed, and intelligent with a sense of humor to boot. She's a heroine that I really enjoyed getting to know. Over hundred and forty years old, she's considered young in comparison to the other ancient family members like her mother. But even in her "youth" she's way past the time when she should be leaving the nest and struggling for her own independence. That's exactly what she did when she moved from England to Canada...or perhaps a more apt description would be escaped to Canada.

Elspeth has been nothing short of enslaved by her mother for more than a century. Think about the most controlling and overbearing parent you know, then multiply that by a million. Add mind control, and incredible power and influence? You have Martine. After tragically losing her husband and children centuries before, she took the role of protective mother to a whole new, scary level.

Heaving a sigh, Elspeth shook her head. Honestly, having a mother who could read your mind was a real pain. It made for extremely well-behaved and miserable children.

Her free will had been taken away for years, her ability to choose her own path. Just when she was attempting to spread her wings and finally fly, her mother shows up with the intent to drag her home. You'd better believe that she wasn't just going to fall in line and go meekly. Elspeth sets out to outsmart her, and hold onto her new life and freedom.

Wyatt MacKay is the landlady's grandson who's visiting her in the downstairs apartment. When Elspeth comes face to face with the ex-special forces man for the first time, she finds him attractive, but had more important matters weighing on her mind. The same couldn't be said for Wyatt, who seemed to be at a loss for words and struggling to contain his shock. Searching for something in her eyes that doesn't seem to be there. There's more to this brooding man than meets the eye...but then again she has a few secrets of her own. I loved Wyatt for her almost immediately. He had a calmness, and a strong and capable presence about him without being "alpha" or bossy. His one weakness was the power this woman had to leave him breathless without even trying.

“I dated a lot of women before you. It was a different girl in every port kind of a deal. But none of them even touched my heart, while you flat-out owned it before I even kissed you,”

Elspeth struggles to come to terms with the fact that her independence could be threatened in more ways than one. She's not in any way, shape or form looking for a life mate, but that doesn't stop fate from intervening when we least expect it. On top of that, mysterious "accidents" keep piling up, and the tension is mounting with the rogue hunters who are already dealing with their own mess. With her extensive family and a very protective Wyatt standing as bodyguard, they race to find the person responsible as the attacks gain momentum. I enjoyed this little mystery, and the moments of suspense thrown in, though I could have perhaps done with a little bit less of them. The book dragged a shade in the middle, and I feel like the emotional punch could have been stronger between the main couple. But overall, I found Twice Bitten to be quite the refreshing and entertaining read.

If you're looking for a paranormal book that has plenty of action with a little mystery thrown in, pick this one up. It could be just what you're in the mood for. I'll be keeping my eye on the series in the hopes that G.G. eventually gets his own full length story!

This is actually making me mad. Instead of fun and laughs, we get a controlling, by mental manipulation after 150 years of life, mom. It is like being in prison and not funny at all. Anger at the horrible family. They used to be fun but this is not fun. The twins are spiteful, actually spiteful, with over drinking blood that isn't even theirs when they know their sister NEEDS it. This isn't funny. I want to beat the shit out of the sisters and the mother, especially the mother, she needs to die. It should be against immortal law to control another immortal for any reason past a certain age unless it is a danger. Controlling another's life just because you can and want them to live like you want them to. Martine is horrid and so far this is not fun. I switched from one book to get light reading and want to scream because this isn't light and fun.

update-
OK, That's it. I think this has to be the last one. Continued on and even more frustrated, actually screaming, so frustrated. Books shouldn't make people so mad! Martine is horrid, horrid. The last 14 books have been 2 stars to 3 (sometime 3 1/2 but never bumped up). Before that, some books were 4 and 5 stars, only a few below that. This isn't going to be above that.

3.5 Estrellas!

Hmmmmmm
It was an odd book! 3 stars because the MCs were very engaging.
I almost DNFed at 10% because the mother (Martine) and the twin sisters were just so incredibly AWFUL!!!
But on the bright side, the other side characters were fun.

The sisters do redeem themselves, but Martine...
She essentially made her children her mindless slaves for many many decades. And the father just turned a blind eye??!?
Needless to say, the author had to do some fancy dancing to make that side of the plot believable.
I still think there are too many plot holes.
Elspeth moved to Canada from England to get away from her bat shit crazy mother and her annoying siblings, only to have them show up 6 weeks later. Then there's the hot grandson of her landlady that she is so mysteriously drawn to and seems somehow familiar...
AND then there's the lunatic who is trying to kill her.

Moving out on your own has never been so difficult! lol

So I hated the start and end of the book, but I did like a large chunk in the middle where Martine is 'off stage'.
Wyatt manages to be lovely and manly at the same time. I just loved his character.
Elspeth was a great character too. Normally I hate heroines who waffle and push the H away too much, but there's a great little discussion between Elspeth and Wyatt that illuminates just why she does that.
Even though I have only read a few of the books in the series, it didn't hamper my enjoyment of this book.

Safety is good
And like I said above... the ending was disappointing except for the cute bit between Ellie and Wyatt.

I love reading Lynsay Sands. Whether it’s her Paranormal, Contemporary or her Historical Romance series, I always feel fulfilled after reading one of her stories. I can continually count on her to write fun and interesting characters, to constantly bring a smile to my face and to always have a little bit of mystery to make everything interesting. Twice Bitten is exactly what I expected from her.

Wyatt was totally unexpected. A mortal who fell in love with El and then lost her when she just didn’t show up. He was thoughtful, sexy and one of the most understanding men I have ever read. He knew what to say and when to say it and said it directly from his heart. There was nothing about this man that I didn’t love … including his Gran.

El was, unfortunately, smothered by her mother. When she finally did get away from her, it was only for her to come to Canada from England and then take control of her life again. But, she finds out that pain can stop this overbearing, hurtful woman from entrancing her again. She finds a solution to this but gives Wyatt a heart-attack every time she does it. Then again, with someone trying to kill her, she is constantly in pain. When she finds out the extent to which her mother took her suffocating ways, she has no choice but to confront her and put an end to her domineering mothering. She’ll have Wyatt and the rest of the Argeneau’s by her side and her sisters will have their freedom.

Lynsay Sands actually wrote a character that I hated. Martine was a bitch! She got under my skin, pissed me off and was just damn rotten. Understandably, she had her reasons, but she took being a doting mother just a little too far. It takes near death and threats for her to finally leave her children alone, return home and confess all to her husband. Then comes the weepies for me when El's father shows up and my heart just bursts.

Like I said in the beginning, Lynsay Sands just enthralls me. She writes stories that are so intriguing and has you turning page after page. She's fluent, fun and her writing is just plain wonderful. Again, she amazes me that she is still writing the Argeneau series and keeping it fresh and entertaining. I will be devastated if she ever decides to stop writing about this wonderful family.

ARC REVIEW

Argeneau #27, What I love about this series is that they can be read as a stand alone. Even with as big as this family is and all the characters where it would be easy to get lost in all the characters Sands is really good about that in this one there were only four, five extra Argeneau couples, including my favorite couple Marguerite and Julius, as well as some family members who haven't found their life mates yet, and a couple of humans; despite the large cast of characters it's so easy to follow. The third person POV mainly follows Elspeth and some of Wyatt. This this still running parallel timeline wise with Immortal Nights and Immortal Unchained. Another thing I love about this series is the science behind their immortality and how they get all grumpy about being called vampires. Sands is such a talented writer for being able to continue on with this series without it getting boring, and refreshing past couples stories in the current book without over explaining or making it feel redundant.

After 140 years of being under her mother's over protective thumb Elspeth was finally able to escape and move out on her own. She been working with the Rogue Hunters helping them sort through their tip line. After checking out one of those calls and getting attacked my a unbalanced human Elspeth comes home to her quant little apartment to find not only her Mother but her twin sisters as well who've come for an unwelcome visit. In need of blood and rest Elspeth's Mom keeps trying to get Elspeth to take blood from the gorgeous landlady's grandson who just happened to be visiting also. Elspeth is able to resist her mother and she comes to realize being in pain helped to resist her mother. Wyatt was surprised to find Elspeth living in his grandmother's upstairs apartment and even more surprised to realize that she doesn't even remember him.

Wyatt knows something is up so he follows Elspeth, after Wyatt catches up Elspeth realizes Wyatt could be her life mate then she gets pushed in front of a car and Wyatt learns what she is and what he is to her. Attempts on her life keep happening and Wyatt is determined to keep her safe. With these coinciding with her Mother's appearance in town no one is for if it's her or someone else is behind the attacks. In one of the attempted attacks, donuts laced with cyanide, Wyatt almost dies and Elspeth brings him over. But it only gets worse before it gets better.

Overall, this was such a fun read, it brought back several women from the earlier books that I loved and the story was so good. Elspeth's dastardly mother and what she did was reprehensible at least her annoying sister were redeemable in the end. Wyatt and Elspeth were just wow, I loved them together. I want G.G. to get his own story.

THE WORD 'SOLENMLY' WAS USED SO MANY TIMES THAT I GENUINELY WANT TO COMMIT MURDER NOW EVERY TIME I SEE IT.

I have never seen such bad writing in a professionally published and commercially successful author. It was worse than many of the fanfictions I've read. EVERYBODY SAID THINGS SOLEMNLY. EVERYBODY. She used this adverb over 100 times in a 100,000 word, which is once every 1000 words. That's bad enough, but often she'd use it FIVE TIMES ON THE SAME PAGE.

I'm surprised I'm not a gibbering wreck after being CONSTANTLY CONFRONTED WITH THAT WORD. It's a shame because the romance could have gone places, if it weren't also being derailed by 938373 unnecessary characters.

This is my second book in the series. I read the first book and it was okay. I obviously skipped around, hence 26 books later, but you can’t be too picky when you are checking out audio books from the library.

All the glowing reviews are pretty much correct on this one. It was very enjoyable only because the storyline was good and the pacing was good. It was a simple concept storyline and if you are new to the series, you really didn’t need that much back story.

Towards the ending a lot more characters were thrown in there which I assume they were from the previous books but I mostly focused on the main characters.

What I liked most about this book was that the mom was kind of evil and controlling but she loved her daughter, the Heroine. I found it kind of unique and in a sense the mom was the villain.

The Hero is just a regular dude and that was fine too. Overall, it was nice to have in the background and I have no complaints when it comes to the narrator. It makes me want to jump into another book.

Well, once again we have another Argeneau book that was good but still nothing like those first books that I become addicted to full of humor and romance (sometimes a numerous attempt at romance) but this was a really good story, multi level plots and a decent romance. Sadly the humor I loved has been missing for many books now and has not returned.

We have the worse mother in centuries here, she can take over the minds of her children and make them do whatever she wishes (we had 4 kids, I might not agree but I understand) but when she is still doing it 142 years later I think we can safely say she wins the Mommy Dearest Award hands down.

El has escaped her mother's evil influence in England and started a life of her own in Canada which has become short lived since after 6 weeks her mother shows up with her 2 sisters held under the influence and begins several plots to basically capture her and take them all back to England. Believe it or not this is not the worst thing happening to El and then add to the fact she has discovered her Lifemate in Wyatt who actually fell instantly in love with Elspeth four years ago but has absolutely no memory of it.

Now let us throw in that somebody seems to be trying to kill her and the "whodunnit" actually was very entertaining plus Wyatt just happens to be a cross between Canada's version of a Seal and has worked as a bodyguard for the last few years so obviously he is going to guard her and romance ensues.

A side note here is that we get to see so many characters from previous books I had to stop and remember who a few of these people were , I loved that about this book and this series in general, old couple don't just disappear.

Here is the bottom line: This was a very entertaining story, loved the characters, loved the plot and most of the secondary characters were interesting/entertaining but I am still holding out hope that we can get back to those stories in those early books that made me laugh and had plots that while making me laugh were serious in nature many times. So 4 Stars for a great story and still wishing for that humor to return to this series that made me love it to begin with years ago.

Twice Bitten by Lynsay Sands
Genres: Adult, Mystery, Paranormal, Romance, Suspense
4.5 stars

A few spots that were either slow or repetitive. Not many, and not enough to interfere with the enjoyment of the story. But, enough I noticed and felt the need to mention them. I don't remember seeing any typo's, etc.

This one is loaded with a few mysteries and they all get tangled together to make it more difficult for the Rogue Hunters to unravel.

Elspeth is slap dab in the middle of it all and trying to avoid her mother's surprise visit at the same time. Talk about 'When it rains, it pours!"

Fast paced suspense. Loads of action (including the steamy parts). Plenty of humor.

"Yeah, that life mate sex is a killer. I mean, none of us intended to ruin the holidays we told you guys about. You just intend to give your loved one a quick kiss in passing and kapow!" Sam said on a sigh."

Someone is trying to kill Elspeth. Could it be her mother? Really? Is her Mother that nuts?

As some of the answers to the mysteries involved in this story unfolds Elspeth has to really give this some serious thought. And you, as the reader, will wonder about it right along with her. Cause, I am telling you right now, her mother, Martine, has some really super serious control issues. Some of the things Martine says and does makes you want to slap her into a reality check!

As you can tell, I really enjoyed this one. The great thing about this series is how much it has grown and improved since the 1st book.
I admit I was only mildly interested in the series after I read the 1st book. The 2nd was better than the 1st and so on. It was book #3 that really got me really interested in the series, but I think it was book #6 that really got me hooked, line and sinker.

A series very worth following and 'sinking your teeth into'. Yummy!

Twice Bitten by Lynsay Sands is book 27 in the Argeneau series. This is the story of Elspeth Argeneau and Wyatt MacKay. This can easily be a standalone book.
Elspeth is part of the Argeneau family and even if she is a 140 year old vampire she has lived a somewhat shelter life but always a controlling one by her mother. Elspeth mother had taken the lost of her family hard and became obsessed with keeping Elspeth save and in her control. But Elspeth became free of her mother but knows she will come back to try to take control of her again. So in the meantime Elspeth is enjoying freedom and not planning on doing any commitments other than helping her Vampire group. But then she meets Wyatt who she finds attractive but it also seems he may be her life mate...which is a big commitment. Along with that there have been accidents happening to her also. Wyatt met Elspeth a few years back and fell in love with her but she has no memory of their meeting. I so enjoyed watching Wyatt and Elspeth story come together!
Ms. Sands writing is always so great and is a must read for sure!

I'm not sure if volume nr. 27 is just too much for me to enjoy or Sands is losing her mojo. I always enjoyed her books as perfect holiday reads full of funny moments and some hot scenes but somehow this book didn't work much for me. The twists and turns were just too predictable and the enforcers too stupid not to see it which is obviously too weird. It just didn't seem possible nobody would figure it out. The whole "overprotective mama" thingy also didn't make sense to me and was a bit too much. Aaand while we're at it - the central couple and their chemistry was too plain and not working. I'm not giving up on Sands, however, no. It was a decent book but compared to the earlier stuff in the series, it didn't offer as much excitement.

3.5 stars - Not the best of the Argeneau series, the domineering mother story line was a bit much and a little shoehorned in to uncomfortably fit with the central mystery plot. Also it seems crazy to me the immortals wouldn't have better rules for how they treat their children.

I like how creative Sands is getting with how she introduces life mates. This was one of my favourites from the Argeneau series so far. It's a lot of fun. I also like how they mention the passage of time which has occurred since the first book in the series.

This was a really good story. I liked both Elspeth and Wyatt and enjoyed their story.

Elspeth is an immortal that is 142 years old and just now getting out on her own. Elspeth has tried to gain her freedom before but her mother is very controlling, a lot more than Elspeth realized until she moved out on her own. Elspeth got a teaching job in Canada and moved away from her family but with 6 weeks, her mother shows up for a "surprise visit" and wanting to rule her life again.

Wyatt is an ex-special forces military guy that now works in private security. Wyatt was a bit of a playboy until 4 years ago when he met the woman of his dreams, Elspeth. She disappeared on him and he hasn't been able to forget her since. Wyatt is surprised when he goes to visit his Grandmother and finds Elspeth renting an apartment from her and doesn't seem to remember him.

When Elspeth moved to Canada, she found an apartment online to rent and moved when her mother was out of the country so she couldn't stop her. Elspeth's teaching job starts in a few weeks but until then, she's helping out the enforcers in the area in her extra time. Elspeth made friends with her landlady and is just getting settled into her life when her mother and twin sisters show up unexpectedly. Elspeth is extremely unhappy about this and as we see the interactions between them, it's easy to see why. Let me just say that Elspeth's mother is deeply disturbed and this led her to do things to control Elspeth and her 2 sisters...things all 3 sisters hate and is causing them to hate their mother (with good reason).

Wyatt is extremely attracted to Elspeth but he also doesn't know why she acts like she doesn't remember him and is a bit suspicious of her knowing his Grandmother and how close they seem to be. Unfortunately, some things happen that soon make it clear that someone is trying to kill Elspeth. Wyatt finds out about Immortals during one of these attempts and it also comes out that he's Elspeth's lifemate so Wyatt's memory isn't wiped. Wyatt decides to help protect Elspeth and it gives them a chance to figure some things out between themselves, including why Elspeth doesn't remember that she'd already found her lifemate 4 years ago. Thankfully, Elspeth and Wyatt are able to reconnect and come together as a couple once they handle Elspeth's mother (horrible woman!). After some drama and danger, the bad guy is captured and Elspeth and Wyatt are able to finally relax and start on a HEA together.

This was a really enjoyable story. I will admit that the part that bothered me the most was Elspeth's mother...how a mother could do that to her kids is beyond me so let me just warn you not to expect a reconciliation. Elspeth is a good heroine and I liked her very much. Wyatt is a really likable character too and Elspeth worked very well as a couple. Overall, I really liked the story and found it very engaging so I'd recommend it. :)

* note - I listened to the audio version of this story and the narrator did a great job.

I am not usually a fan of paranormal. However, I don't consider vampire (or immortal) books to be paranormal.

I know. I know. They are...but I still like them. So, work with me here and can we all just pretend that this title isn't paranormal? Thanks, I appreciate it.

Elspeth and Wyatt met years ago, but she doesn't remember him. Although, the reason for that is a lot deeper than a situation where a woman decides to ignore a bad date...as it was anything but a bad date. However, it was an issue with her mother, memories that can be changed, and a parent just not good at letting go as their child gets older.

I enjoyed that this title was about more than the paranormal, although that was a definite theme. I liked that Wyatt was accepting, but with questions about what was going on. I think anyone would have the same questions, and wonder the same things, and I thought his reaction was reasonable.

This series has been going on for a while, and there is some of the history of the characters at play, however if you have not read all of the books in the series, which I have not, you are still able to follow this book with no issue.

I enjoyed this title and I recommend it.

This one started a bit slow but got better...and it was definitely better than the 2 previous books. And for the hundredth time...I hope the mad scientist plot line ends soon. I'm fed up with it. (It was only mentioned but that was enough for me to elicit some serious eye rolling..)

I wish Wyatt would have been a bit more commanding as an ex-elite-soldier, but it was a good story with some of the earlier banter and levity. But gripping at the same time. I also liked Ellie. It was also nice to see so many "old" characters visit in this book.

I also hope GG gets his own book and finds a kick-ass heroine (and please not one who has something to do with this stupid mad scientist plot line.) Lol, I think you can tell I'm so over it.

Love it. it is rare that you find your soul mate once in your life. It is even rarer when it happens twice. To find out that your Mother has stepped and made it possible that you don't even remember it! Elspeth has been trying to leave her controlling Mother's home for years. Now that she has moved away, she is working as an enforcer, also enjoying a taste of freedom. Thinking a fling would be fun and her landlady's grandson checks both boxes off. Wyatt fell instantly in love with Elspeth four years ago. He is stunned to run into her again, and she has no memory of him. Then there is alot of things going on about Elspeth that makes no sense. Like the way she heals, these mysterious accidents that Elspeth keep having. Wyatt is an ex-special forces soldier appoints himself her bodyguard, he found her once and will do any and everything to make sure that he doesn't lose the love his life ever again.

Hmmmm, made it to 48% but it just couldn't hold my interest anymore. I was totally zoning out. Those twin sisters though!🤔 I might not have been in the right frame of mind to tackle a new genre, it was the drinking blood bits that turned me off a little. I'll think about giving it another go next year, maybe.

She is a skilled writer so I am never pulled out of the book by bad writing. She is always funny and always have scrumptious heroes. I had a bit of trouble with this set up bc her mother was borderline psychotic and her sisters ...arg. And not enough abt the bad guy so when he popped up, it was a little disorienting. But it was a fun ride and I enjoyed it and will buy whatever she writes next.

This book is a 3.5 no higher no less.

We have meet Elspeth in previous books however she is seen so little in 26 books that I did not remember who she was. When I read the blurb for this book I was a bit hesitant because I did not want to deal with new characters when Lucian and Co. are in Venezuela trying to save the world. To be honest I could have done without this book. I am not saying that this book was not good, because it was, but just the fact that I want to be with the Immortals in Venezuela. I want everyone to be safe and Elspeth is getting her own damn book.

*sigh* Sorry rant over. Where was I.... yes the book. Elspeth is part of the group of girls that were at the sleepover for Lissianna's birthday back in A Quick Bite. When I realized that I was more comfortable about Elspeth getting her story. Martine, Elspeth, The Twins, and Becker's mom, has always been someone in the background but oh is she unstable. She ruled her children with an iron fist and no one knew the extent of her crazy.

In this book we meet Wyatt who is Elspeth's life-mate that she does not remember. We have seen someone lose a whole life-mate before in Vampire, Interrupted but unlike that situation the person who did this to Elspeth did it because they thought it was right, not out of spite. There are a lot of secrets that are unearthed and a lot of issues that are being addressed in this book. There is drama, a crazy killer, a controlling mother and husband, a weird family dynamic, and of course sex.

I liked this book overall and I never hear solemnly again I will be over the moon happy. That world was throughout the book AT LEAST 100 TIMES!! Like come one was it that damn necessary?!?!

This book was laugh out loud funny !

Lynsay Sands scored again with this book. I loved Elspeth and Wyatt ! They were amazing characters and this book had so much going on in the story that it's hard to choose just one shining moment. I had to feel sorry for poor Elspeth because of everything that kept happening to her. Over and over again she proved her strength. She was such an amazing heroine who had the patience of a saint for putting up with the crap from Martine.

Like always, the writing and the plot were excellent. I have to say that Lynsay Sands may have outdone herself on this one. The mystery was great. The villain came as a total surprise. This book had loads of humor, passion, and surprises. I'm already looking forward to reading the next Argeneau Family book.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary Edelweiss copy of this book.

I liked this one, thought the romance was good. Elspeth was a bit blah, as was Wyatt, but they worked together. I was stunned with Elspeth’s mother and her actions. I was very glad that she got called out on her actions and forced to stop. I really liked Elspeth’s friendship with Wyatt’s grandmother, wish that she would have been brought in on the secret of Immortals. But who really stole the book for me was Gigi. I loved him, loved his unique place in the Immortal world. I really hope that he finds his life mate and soon!

Was der Vampir begehrt
von Lynsay Sands
LYX

I'm not usually into vampire romance, though I used to read my fair share of paranormal romance. I really enjoyed some of Lynsay Sands' historical romances though, so I thought I'd give this one a spin. Pro tip: They're not vampires, they're Atlanteans with some highly advanced technological stuff that basically give them characteristics of what we'd call a vampire. I love that Sands gives a scientific, technical reason for why the "immortals" are the way they are, and I DO happen to have a weird thing for Atlantis and Atlanteans, so it turned out this book was actually right up my alley after all (surprise!)

This is such an exciting book and I'm not quite sure how to classify it. There's definitely an element of romance, but also some murder mystery intrigue, some detective/cop type storyline, paranormal themes… A little bit of something for everyone, really. The writing is phenomenal, and I only put this down once (and very grudgingly) when I needed to do some adulting, so thankfully I started this on a Sunday morning and was able to power through and read it in mostly one big gulp. The murder mystery plotline totally kept me guessing, which I appreciate because sometimes you can see "who done it" coming a mile away. Not so much for this one!

I really liked Elspeth, who is a very strong female character dealing with a SERIOUSLY controlling mother. Wyatt was also really great, and I love his background as basically the Canadian version of the Navy SEAL turned bodyguard, which really comes in handy when it turns out someone is seriously intent on killing Elspeth. I like a little more romance in my romances, where this one seems to focus more on the murder mystery type plot and on Elspeth's issues with her family. And why do lifemates pass out after sex? Is there a logical explanation for this? Because it just doesn't make sense unless as a plot device to make things happen while they're K.O., which bugs me a lot especially after the careful explanation of why immortals are the way they are.

A lot of time is spend on going into the backstories of various side characters, which I guess makes sense with 26 previous books in the series, but it got to the point that I felt it kind of took away from the main storyline(s). That being said, there had better be a book about G.G., because I need to read more about him right now!

This is the 27th book in the Argeneau series, but each book is written to stand on its own. There are a LOT of side character, including at least half a dozen couples that I assume are the main characters in earlier books. There are a few references to past escapades of some of these couples which may or may not actually be described in prior books. That being said I don't think there are any serious spoilers for earlier books, and despite there being about a billion character to keep track of, you're fine reading this one without reading any of the earlier books. The only downside is that I enjoyed this book so much that now I need to go back and read the previous 26 books. Good lord, that's a lot of books…!!

TWICE BITTEN But Not Shy at All
http://fangswandsandfairydust.com/201...
Talk about an overprotective mother! She’s a pain but does wonders for the Argeneau series.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of this book. No remuneration was exchanged and all opinions presented herein are my own except as noted.

This post is based-on the Mass Market Paperback edition

I was so glad to read this book because, while I felt Sands was starting to “phone it in” on this series, in TWICE BITTEN she brings the series back with a fresh look.

Yes, it follows the series formula, and it is what we expect to read and enjoy with an Argeneau novel, but this one doesn’t focus on Marguerite’s match making, or an Island of Dr. Moreau set-up either. This one uses the history of the family in a new way – showing the effects of trauma on someone even thousands of years after the fact. And, it brings us a guy truly committed; in it for the long haul.

This book reinvigorated the series for me — a controlling mother-figure is something most can relate to either their own, or a teacher, aunt, boss or whatever. Sometimes we just can’t get out of this situation (or see the way out) and we need a little help.

Both the Argeneau machine and the new love interest work against the two threats to our heroine, or maybe just one?
The new love interest is yummy, heroic and stuck like glue. The other characters are mostly familiar to the series, or even regulars. A lot of the usual hunters, though, are stuck in the tropics and the last book fighting off the crazy doctor. That sub-plot made me think this series was on its way out but this one gives me a great feeling.

There’s a big surprise for one of the older Immortal couples which gives the story a little “awwww” factor.

In short this story in the series brings back the magic and the enjoyment I have always taken in reading this series. I have always loved the explanation of the immortality granted to the Argeneaus, the Nottes and other vampire immortal families.

The big threat and mystery is a little “light” and telegraphed all over the place. But I don’t remember ever being really surprised – the mysteries aren’t really the point to the series.

I would like to know if other fans who feel this way about the book. It’s fired me up about the series again.
