A fast moving treasure hunt that takes our main characters down a treacherous path into the dangers of an uninhabited jungle. A bit cliche but Ray Porters narrative made it worth while.

কাহিনী সংক্ষেপঃ
বাবার ব্যাপারে তেমন কিছু না জেনেই বড় হয়েছে বাউন্টি হান্টার ড্রেইক র‌্যামজি। তবে শিকার ধরতে গিয়ে আইনি জটিলতায় জড়িয়ে পড়ল সে। জানানো হল, আপাতত আর কোন কেস দেয়া হবে না ওকে। তবে অফিস ছাড়ার ঠিক আগ মুহূর্তে সিয়াটলের অ্যাটর্নির কাছ থেকে আসা একটা মেসেজ ধরিয়ে দেয়া হল ওকে। আইডাহো-তে সদ্য মৃতা এক মহিলা ওর জন্য উপহার হিসেবে রেখে গেছে নগদ পঁচিশ হাজার ডলার আর অ্যাটর্নিকে নির্দেশ দিয়ে গেছে, ওর যাতায়াতের বিমান টিকেটের ব্যবস্থা করতে।

বিষয়টা সন্দেহজনক। এই আত্মীয়ার ব্যাপারে কিছুই জানা নেই ড্রেইকের। অ্যাটর্নির সাথে দেখা করতে হাজির হল অকুস্থলে। টাকার সাথে আরও একটা জিনিস হস্তান্তর করা হল ওর কাছে; মহিলার একটা চিঠি এবং একটা জার্নাল। আর তাতেই আমুল পাল্টে গেল ওর জীবন। জানলো, বহু বছর আগে অ্যামাজোন জঙ্গলে হারিয়ে যাওয়া পিতার প্রকৃত পরিচয় আর বিশাল এক ধনভান্ডারের খোঁজ। বাবার পদাঙ্ক অনুসরণের সিদ্ধান্ত নিল ড্রেইক। খুঁজে বের করবে হারানো শহর পাইটিটি। যেখানে লুক্কায়িত আছে ইনকা সাম্রাজ্যের কিংবদন্তির গুপ্তধন। সাথে যোগ দিল বাবার ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু আর তার আর্কিওলজিস্ট মেয়ে।

এদিকে দুই সাবেক কেজিবি এজেন্টও গোপন কিছু একটা খুঁজছে। বোঝার ওপর শাকের আঁটি হিসেবে হাজির হল মার্কিন সরকার। রাশানদের গোপন জিনিসটার তালাশ করছে তারাও।

ছুটে বেড়াচ্ছে ড্রেইক। মেক্সিকো সিটি থেকে রিও ডি জেনেরিও, সেখান থেকে অ্যামাজোনের গহীন অরণ্য। ঘাড়ের ওপর নিঃশ্বাস ফেলছে রাশানরা, এদিকে সিআইএ-ও খোঁজ পেয়ে গেছে ওর। সবাই চায় জার্নালটা।
আরও একজন হাত বাড়ালো সাহায্যের।

নিজস্ব অভিমতঃ
অ্যামাজন নিয়ে আমার পড়া ২য় বই। র‍্যামজি’স গোল্ডের শুরু টা ইনকা সভ্যতাকে নিয়ে, গুপ্তধন উদ্ধার নিয়ে। গল্পে শুরুর দিকে ঘটনাপ্রবাহ আমার কাছে উপভোগ্য লেগেছে। গল্পে বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা, বন্ধুত্ব, প্রেম সবই ছিল। গহীন অরণ্য, পদে পদে বিপদ, হিংস্র প্রাণীদের স্বর্গ, সৌন্দর্য, সব মিলিয়ে আরো জানা বা পড়ার তীব্র আকাঙ্ক্ষা তৈরী হয়েছিল। বইটা একবার পড়তে বসার পরে, শেষ না করে ওঠা সম্ভব হয়নি। একদম রোমাঞ্চকর একটা রোলার কোস্টার। অনুবাদক খালেদ নকীব ভাইও দক্ষতার সাথে অনুবাদ করেছেন। বাক্য গঠন বেশ সহজবোধ্য ও প্রাঞ্জল, বেশ সুখপাঠ্য।

প্রচ্ছদঃ
প্রচ্ছদ শিল্পী "আদনান আহমেদ রিজন" এর করা এই বইয়ের প্রচ্ছদটি বরাবরের মতোই সুন্দর হয়েছে। সেই সাথে কালার কম্বিনেশনও খুব সুন্দর।

মলাট, বাঁধাই, পৃষ্ঠার মানঃ
বইয়ের প্রোডাকশন চমৎকার হয়েছে। বাইন্ডিং বেশ শক্ত-পোক্ত। ক্রিম কালারের ৮০গ্রামের পেজ ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। বইটিতে ছাপাও ছিল যথেষ্ট স্পষ্ট। মোটা কাগজের ডাস্ট কভার দেওয়া হয়েছে। শিক বাইন্ডিং করা হয়েছে, কয়েকবার পড়ার পরেও পেজ বের হয়ে যাওয়ার সম্ভবনা নেই। অতিরিক্ত শক্ত বাইন্ডিংও না যে পড়তে কষ্ট হয়, কিংবা বইয়ের মাঝামাঝি আসলে দুই হাত দিয়ে চেপে ধরে রাখতে হয়।

শেষ কিছু কথাঃ
অনুবাদক এই বইটি বেশ দক্ষতার সাথেই অনুবাদ করেছেন। তবে, বইটিতে নেগেটিভ দিক বলতে গেলে বলবো, বানান সংশোধন এর দিকে আরো একটু নজর দেয়া দরকার ছিল।

র‌্যামজি’স গোল্ড পড়ার পরামর্শ রইলো। সিরিজের ২য় বই "এমারেল্ড বুদ্ধা" এর অপেক্ষায় আছি।

Drake Ramsey is a down-on-his-luck bounty hunter who receives a mysterious journal from his father, Ford Ramsey, who died searching for the legendary lost Inca city of Paititi. Drake tracks down his father's friend Jack Brody and Jack's daughter Allie in Texas, the three of them heading into South America together to finish what Drake's father began before murderous Russian thugs catch up to them.

This was a good example of how not to write a treasure-hunting adventure. I really enjoy most well-worn adventure tropes, provided they're used effectively in combination with generally good writing. Those tropes are present here and the nuts and bolts of Blake's prose are fine, but the pacing and characterization are insufficient, making this novel feel way too long and almost entirely lacking suspense and fun. Blake presents moments of action and near-humor that seem like they're leading into something better, but they remain brief and unsatisfying. It was hard to get past the names of the characters, who seem to have been taken from the Indiana Jones films and the protagonist of the Uncharted video games ("Ford", "Brody", "Drake"). The logistics of crossing borders to get into the jungle and finding supplies were too heavily focused on and most of them were lost action set piece opportunities. Scenes featuring Jack giving Drake some combat training felt too numerous and never really paid off later in the story. Despite Jack's mentoring, all of the characters felt entirely unprepared for treasure hunting, making some highly questionable decisions along the way. Collectively, it felt like Blake tried to present a realistic plot for a patently unrealistic story, failing to suspend my disbelief and sucking the possibility for tense situations out. Drake both has a near-eidetic memory (convenient) and is a blank slate, asking questions on cue to give readers exposition; his flirtations with Allie were left mostly unexplored. The villains are seen in brief glimpses and don't feel very threatening, despite some of the things they do to track Drake down. A fairly major character who appears 3/4 of the way in feels shoehorned in and not distinct enough to tell apart from Drake. A particular moment late in the plot which should have been emotional felt almost entirely ignored.

On the positive side, I liked the plot synopsis and the concept. In the end, too little of the good stuff and too much realistic filler.

I’ve read just about everything this author has thrown at me, from female Mossad agent to Mexican hit man, conspiracy thrillers to female FBI leads. Now he’s turned his hand to treasure hunters, and once again hits all the right notes.

I don’t believe in spoilers, so I’ll keep this short: Drake Ramsey discovers his late father’s journal, but he’s not the only one who knows about it. Ramsey senior died in the Amazon jungle while searching for treasure, and Drake teams up with the old man’s friend and daughter to finish his father’s work. Seems simple enough, but throw in a couple of evil Russians and soon the chase is on.

Another sure-fire hit to add to the ever-growing collection from one of the best adventure writers around. Highly recommended.

Ramsey's Gold is a blast to read. The kind of book that makes you happy from beginning to end.

Drake Ramsey is a bright, twenty-something guy who goes from being down on his luck to living a life of action and adventure. The treasure-hunting part of the story is fast-paced and would be enough to make a fantastic novel, but Blake gives us more, adding a love interest into the mix, and a lot of humor throughout.

I hope they turn this book into a movie. We need an Indiana Jones for this generation.

আমার কাছে ভালো লাগে নাই। আসল কাহিনী থেকে আউফাউ গল্প বেশি। তার উপরে অনুবাদটা কেনো জানি সাবলীল লাগে নাই। অনেক সাধারণ শব্দও একটু জটিল করে লেখা। যাইহক আমার ভালো লাগে নাই বলে অন্য কারো লাগবে না এমন কথা নাই। বেশি বেশি বই পড়েন।

❝...কয়েক বছর পরপরই বেশ কিছু শিক্ষাবিদ উদয় হয় বনে যাওয়ার জন্য, তারপর মাসখানেক না যেতেই ফিরে আসে বনভোজন সেরে। হতোদ্যম, হত-ক্লান্ত আর অবশ্যই শূন্য হাতে। তবে কেবল ভাগ্যবানদের ব্যাপারেই তেমনটা ঘটে। দুর্ভাগাদের আর বনভোজন করা হয় না। বন-ই তাদের ভোজন করে ফেলে।❞

আমাজন অথবা অ্যামাজন! এই বিস্তীর্ণ অরণ্য নিয়ে জানার পরিধি যত বেশি বলে মনে হবে তখনই সেটা কম পড়ে যাবে। কী এক মোহঘোর এই অরণ্যের চারিদিক ঘিরে প্রদর্শিত হয় তা আজও অজানা। পদে পদে বিপদের হাতছানি, গহীন অরণ্যের অপার সৌন্দর্য, হিংস্র প্রাণীদের স্বর্গ, আদিবাসীদের রাজত্ব-ই যেন আমাজনের বৈশিষ্ট্য। যখন থেকে এই আমাজনের হদিস পেয়েছি, স্বপ্নে কিংবা কল্পনার রথে চড়ে বারবার সেটা পাড়ি দিয়েছি। সেই আকাঙ্ক্ষা আজও বিন্দুমাত্র কমেনি, বরং পূর্বের চেয়েও হয়েছে সুদূরপ্রসারী।

❛র‍্যামজি’স গোল্ড❜ উপন্যাস বেছে নেওয়ার মূল কারণও ছিল—লেখকের হাত ধরে আরও একবার আমাজন ঘুরে আসার অকম্প মনোবাসনা। সেই আকাঙ্ক্ষা ঠিক কতটুকু পূরণ হয়েছে এই নিয়ে আলোকপাত করব।

ইনকা সভ্যতা। বর্তমান পেরুর কুজকো এলাকায় সুপ্রাচীন ইনকা সভ্যতার যাত্রা শুরু হয়েছিল একটি উপজাতি হিসেবে। এর পর ইকুয়েডর, বলিভিয়া, উত্তর পশ্চিম আর্জেন্টিনা, উত্তর চিলি ও দক্ষিণ কলম্বিয়া ইনকা সাম্রাজ্য বিস্তৃত লাভ করে। একটা সময় গিয়ে এই সভ্যতার সমাপ্তি ঘটে। ইতিহাসের পাতা ঘাঁটলে কেন এবং কী কারণ দুটোই খুঁজে পাওয়া যাবে। সে-রকমই একটা সময় কেন্দ্র করে ❛র‍্যামজি’স গোল্ড❜ উপন্যাসের সূত্রপাত। অর্থাৎ উপন্যাসের মূল লক্ষ্য ছিল ইনকা সভ্যতার হারানো গুপ্তধন উদ্ধার। তবে এই পরিত্রাণ প্রক্রিয়া খুব দ্রুত শুরু হয়নি। একটি পরিপূর্ণ পরিকল্পনা মেনে লেখা হয়েছে পুরো উপন্যাস।

তা-হলে নিশ্চয় বেশ ভালো হয়েছে? আমার প্রতিক্রিয়া এই ক্ষেত্রে মিশ্র থাকবে। গল্প অনুযায়ী এই বইটা এগিয়ে থাকলেও যাঁদের আমাজন অ্যাডভেঞ্চার নিয়ে প্রত্যাশা থাকবে, তাঁদের কিছুটা হতাশ হতে হবে। তবে পুরো বই যখন বিবেচনা করা হবে, তখন বইটি ভালো মনে হবে।

➲ আখ্যান—

সদ্য মৃত এক আত্মীয়ার কাছ থেকে পাওয়া একটি চিঠি ও একটা পুরনো জার্নালের কারণে আমূল পালটে গেল ড্রেইক র‍্যামজি-র জীবন। বহু বছর আগে আম্যাজন জঙ্গলে হারিয়ে যাওয়া বাবার পরিচয়ের পাশাপাশি জানা গেল বিশাল ধনভাণ্ডারের খোঁজ।

ড্রেইক ঠিক করল, বাবার পদাঙ্ক অনুসরণ করবে...খুঁজে বের করবে কিংবদন্তির ইনকা শহর পাইটিটি। সাথে যোগ দিলো বাবার ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু আর তার মেয়ে। মেক্সিকো থেকে রিও ডি জেনেরিও, তারপর আম্যাজনের গহীন অরণ্য...

ওদের পিছু নিল দুই সাবেক কেজিবি অ্যাজেন্ট, মার্কিন সরকারের প্রতিনিধি। সবাই চায় ওই জার্নাল। আরও একজন বাড়াল সাহায্যের হাত। কিংবদন্তির গুপ্তধন, দুই রাশান খুনি, অপরূপা এক তরুণী আর সাবেক এক নেভি সিল... দুর্গম অরণ্যের এই ইঁদুর-বেড়াল খেলায় জয়ী হতে পারবে তো ড্রেইক র‍্যামজি?

➤ পাঠ প্রতিক্রিয়া ও পর্যালোচনা—

❝অ্যামাজনে যা ঘটে, সেটা অ্যামাজনেই থেকে যায়...❞

❛র‍্যামজি’স গোল্ড❜ উপন্যাস আমাজনের বাইরের অর্থাৎ শুরুর ঘটনাপ্রবাহ বেশ উপভোগ্য। শুরুতে লেখক বেশ ভালো একটা গল্প সাজিয়েছেন, চরিত্রদের পেছনে খেটেছেন; তবে সেই অনুযায়ী উপন্যাসের শেষ দিকে তাড়াহুড়ো বলব না তবে কিছুটা নির্জীব প্রক্রিয়ার আশ্রয় নিয়েছেন চরিত্রদের ক্ষেত্রে। চরিত্রদের বারবার বিপদে ফেলে তিনি যে মজা পেয়েছেন, তা উপন্যাস পড়লে ভালোই অনুধাবন করতে পারবেন। এ-ছাড়া গুপ্তধন অপসারণের প্রক্রিয়া বেশ পটু ও নিপুণ হাতে তৈরি করেছেন। এই বিষয় নিয়ে আঙুল তোলার অবকাশ রাখেননি। অ্যাকশন সিকোয়েন্স, কূটকৌশল সবই ভালো লেগেছে। সত্যি বলতে এই উপন্যাস একটা মেদহীন রোলার কোস্টার রাইড। একবার নিয়ে বসলে, না শেষ করে ওঠা সম্ভব না।

● সূত্রপাত—

গল্পের শুরুটা ১৫৩২ সালের একটি ঘটনাপ্রবাহ দিয়ে শুরু। অতীত নিয়ে এই একটি মাত্র অধ্যায় পুরো উপন্যাসে বিদ্যমান ছিল। এর পর বর্তমান সময়ের কাহিনির রেলগাড়ি চলা শুরু। একটি দুর্ঘটনা, সেই দুর্ঘটনার সাথে গল্পের মূল প্রোটাগনিস্ট ড্রেইক র‍্যামজি’র সম্পর্ক, অপ্রত্যাশিত অর্থ প্রাপ্তি এবং একটি জার্নাল। যা গুপ্তধন উদ্ধারের প্রধান হাতিয়ার... বাকি পথটাও বেশ দীর্ঘ তবে রোমাঞ্চকর।

উপন্যাসের শুরু থেকে গল্পে ঢুকে যাওয়ার মতো কাহিনি কথন রয়েছে। খুব বেশি বিবরণ বা ধীর গতি একেবারে নেই। ৫০ পৃষ্ঠার পর থেকে এই বই হাত থেকে রাখা দায় হয়ে যায়।

● গল্প বুনট • লেখনশৈলী • বর্ণবিন্যাস—

সাজানো-গোছানো গল্পের টাইমলাইন, সেইসাথে যুক্ত হয়েছে সহজ লেখনশৈলী। তবে অনুবাদের ৩০ থেকে ৫০ পৃষ্ঠায় কিছুটা জড়তা লক্ষ করা গেলেও, পরবর্তীতে তেমন কোনো সমস্যা হয়নি। লেখকের লেখনশৈলীর সাথে অনুবাদকের সামঞ্জস্যতা বেশ দৃঢ় ছিল। বর্ণবিন্যাস বা বাক্য গঠনের কথা বললে, বেশ প্রাঞ্জল ও সহজবোধ্য লেগেছে। গল্পের আবহের সাথে খুব সহজে মিশে যেতে পেরেছি, চরিত্রদের উদ্রেক এবং ঘটনার পর্যবেক্ষণ বর্ণবিন্যাসের কারণে উপভোগ্য হয়েছে।

● চরিত্রায়ন—

চরিত্র রয়েছে অনেক। কেউ এসেছে শুরুতে, কেউ শেষে। চরিত্র গঠন করা হয়েছে পোক্ত হাতে, সেই হিসেবে কাজ সেই অনুযায়ী মনে হয়নি। বিশেষ করে অ্যালি চরিত্রটি। যে-ভাবে লাইমলাইটে থাকা দরকার ছিল, শেষ পর্যন্ত সেটা হয়নি দেখে কিছুটা খারাপ লাগছে। তবে র‍্যামজি’র পাশাপাশি জ্যাক ও স্পেন্সার বেশ ভালোই টক্কর দিয়েছে। বন্ধুত্ব, প্রেম, সহিংস ও বিশ্বাসঘাতকতার মেলবন্ধনে ঠাসা ❛র‍্যামজি’স গোল্ড❜ উপন্যাসের চরিত্ররা৷

● অবসান—

পরিপূর্ণ ও তৃপ্তিদায়ক। খুব বেশ প্যাঁচ ছিল না। সহজে আন্দাজ করে নেওয়ার মতো গল্প। এমনকি গল্পে কোন চরিত্র শেষ পর্যন্ত কেমন কাজ করবে সেটার আভাসও আগে থেকে পাওয়া যায়। থ্রিল শুরুতে পেলেও শেষে সেটা কমে আসবে, তবে গুপ্তধন উদ্ধারের প্রক্রিয়া সেটা অনেকটা ব্যালেন্স করিয়ে দিবে।

● খুচরা আলাপ—

❝প্রত্যেকে আমার জানা মতে শোচনীয় একটা অবস্থায় আছে৷ হয়তো পঞ্চাশ হাজার ডলারের গাড়ি ঠিকই আছ, কিন্তু মনে সুখ নেই। সহজ-সরল জীবন ধারণের মাঝে এক ধরনের শান্তি আছে। ভোগ-বাদ কেবল দ্রুত আরও জটিল পরিস্থিতিতে নিয়ে যায় আমাদের। এক সময় খুন করে আমাদের সুকুমার প্রবৃত্তিগুলোকে।❞

❛র‍্যামজি’স গোল্ড❜ উপন্যাসে দার্শনিক কিছু সংলাপ রয়েছে, বাবার প্রতি সন্তানের অদৃশ্য অনুভূতির প্রকাশও ঘটেছে। ছন্নছাড়া জীবন অতিবাহিত করেও, লোভ সংবরণের যে আত্মত্যাগ সেই দিকটিও বেশ স্পষ্টভাবে ফুটে উঠেছে। পরিস্থিতি বিবেচনা, বিপদে সাহসের পরিচয়, সম্মানের বহিঃপ্রকাশ, ভালোবাসার পূর্ণতার বিষয়গুলো মনের গভীরে ছাপ ফেলতে সহায়তা করেছে। সব মিলিয়ে বইটি অবশ্যই পাঠ্য।

এ-ছাড়া, ব্রাজিলের রিও ডি জেনেরিও ও সেখানকার মানুষের জীবন বৈচিত্র্য নিয়ে ঘটনা উঠে এসেছে ❛র‍্যামজি’স গোল্ড❜ উপন্যাসের পাতায়। আমাজন প্রবেশের পূর্বে, যে কয়টি ধাপ রয়েছে তা রয়েসয়ে বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে। একজন স্মাগলারের কার্যপদ্ধতি, জীবিহা নির্বাহের প্রক্রিয়া ও অর্থের জন্য বিপদে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ার ব্যাকুলতার উদাহরণও এই উপন্যাসে বিদ্যমান। এক কথায় উপন্যাসটি—স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ। অতি নাটকীয়তা এই বইয়ে ছিল না, বিশেষ করে আমাজনে যা হয়ে থাকে। তবে ভাগ্যের ভেলায় শেষ পর্যন্ত ভাসতে হয়েছে উপন্যাসের যাত্রীদের। তারপর শুরু হয়—খ্যাতির বিড়ম্বনা...

➣ লেখক ও অনুবাদক নিয়ে কিছু কথা—

রাসেল ব্লেইকের উপন্যাস প্রথম পড়া। লেখক ভালোই গল্প বলতে পারেন। আকৃষ্ট করার প্রক্রিয়াও জানেন। ওনার অন্যান্য কাজগুলো পড়ার জন্য মুখিয়ে আছি।

অনুবাদক খালেদ নকীব দাদার প্রথম অনুবাদ গ্রন্থ পড়া। অনুভূতি সুখপাঠ্য। কিছু জায়গায় (বিশেষ করে ৩০-৫০ পৃষ্ঠ) কিছুটা আড়ষ্টভাব রয়ে গেলেও, দ্রুত সেগুলো কাটিয়ে ঝরঝরে অনুবাদ উপহার দিয়েছেন। ওনার ‘টুয়েন্টি থাউজেন্ড লিগস আন্ডার দ্য সি’ সংগ্রহে থাকলেও পড়া হয়নি, এখন যত দ্রুত সম্ভব সেটা সাবাড় করতে হবে।

● সম্পাদনা ও বানান—

অনুবাদে যে-সব জড়তা বা বাক্য গঠনে অসামঞ্জস্য থেকে গিয়েছে সেটা যদি সঠিকভাবে সম্পাদনা করা হতো তাহলে এই নিয়ে অভিযোগের কারণ থাকত না। দুয়েকটি উদাহরণ দিচ্ছি—

পৃ: ৫৬— তুমি নিজেও হয়তো দেখেছো। নিয়েছো। এবং তুমি তোমার মনে জোরকে তারিফ করেছ।

পৃ: ২৩২— হাতের ম্যাশেটি দিয়ে সামঞ্জস্যহীন বেড়ে উঠা ঝোপগুলো হাতের ম্যাশেটি দিয়ে সরানোর প্রয়াস পেল। > তারপর সম্ভাব্য একটা পথনির্দেশনা রেকর্ড করল এই শান বাঁধানো পথ যেদিকে দিক নির্দেশ করছে।

পৃ: ২৫৩— খাদের কিনারা কাছ থেকে পিছিয়ে এলো স্পেন্সার।

এইরকম আরও অনেক অসামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ বাক্য ছিল। বানান ভুল আর টাইপোর কথা না বলি। শুধু ‘ওয়াকিবহাল’ শব্দটা লেখা হয়েছে তিনভাবে। ওয়াকেবহাল, ওয়াকিফহাল, ওয়াকেফহাল... টাইপোর জন্য অনেক শব্দ পূর্ণতা পায়নি।

আশির্বাদ, শিক্ষানবীশ, ঈর্ষাণ্বিত, ভুক্তভুগী, আচরন, প্রাতঃরাশ, ব্যাথা, ঈষদোষ্ণ-সহ প্রচলিত আর অপাংতেয়-এর মতো অপ্রচলিত বানান ভুলের কারণে পড়তে গিয়ে অনেক হোঁচট খেতে হয়েছে। আশা করি দ্বিতীয় সংস্করণে সম্পাদনা ও বানান দুটোই ঠিকঠাক করে নেওয়া হবে।

● প্রচ্ছদ • নামলিপি—

নামলিপি ভালো হয়েছে এবং প্রচ্ছদও বেশ নজরকাড়া। এই বইটি নেওয়ার পেছনে আরেকটি কারণ হচ্ছে প্রচ্ছদ। তবে ফ্রন্ট কাভারে পিরামিডের যোগসূত্র কাহিনিতে খুঁজে পেলাম না।

● মলাট • বাঁধাই • পৃষ্ঠা—

বছরের দেখা বাহ্যিক সেরা প্রোডাকশনের বই। ৩৫০ পৃষ্ঠার বই, অথচ বাঁধাই এতই স্মুথ যে পৃষ্ঠাগুলাও আরাম করে খুলে পড়া যায়। বইটার ভেতর থেকে বাহ্যিক কাঠামো আকৃষ্ট করেছে। মলাট শক্তপোক্ত, পৃষ্ঠার মানও বেশ ভালো। শুধু ভেতরের কাজগুলো পরিপূর্ণ হলে, সোনায় সোহাগা বলতে সক্ষম হতাম।

This was a surprisingly fun yet tense thriller introducing a new character. This book came out in 2015 and there are now three books in the series featuring Drake Ramsey. The two follow-up books are Emerald Buddha and The Goddess Legacy.

The book begins with Drake, who has the name Drake Simmons when we meet him, working as a "fugitive recovery agent" in Mountain View, California. After making a legal error on his last catch he's told that he's not going to be given any cases for a while. But just before leaving the office he's given a message from a Seattle attorney. A woman in Idaho has died and left him a gift of $25,000 and the attorney is authorized to pay Drake's ticket to receive the bequest.

Suspicious, as this is a woman he's never heard of, he flies up to meet the attorney. There he's given the money, a letter from the woman, and a journal. These things will radically change his life, identifying his deceased real father and the journaled details of a treasure hidden in the Peruvian rain forest. But Drake soon discovers that two ex-KGB agents are on a hunt for something hidden near the treasure, and the U.S. Government wants it, too.

Drake manages to find and team up with his father's best friend on a trip that takes him through Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, and into the jungle. The Russians are close behind and he's also found by the CIA, both demanding the journal.

Drake is a fun character who dives into the adventure with the enthusiasm of an Indiana Jones (and he's teased by one of the characters for choosing a similar hat) as he's given some basic survival and weapons training by his new partner. Likeable characters are found to be treacherous, suspicious characters show their worth, and while a few fun characters meet their demise the end is a satisfying pleasure.

We never learn the real nature of the substance everyone is chasing, and the person who has hidden it in the jungle is beyond bizarre, but book has all the elements you want in a thriller like this. I'll be picking up the next two Drake Ramsey books soon.

ড্রেইক র‍্যামজি, পেশায় একজন বাউন্টি হান্টার। হুট করেই এক ফোন কলে বদলে গেলো তার জীবন। সারাজীবন ধরে জেনে আসা নিজের পিতার অতীত মিথ্যে হয়ে সেখানে তৈরী হলো নতুন এক ইতিহাস। যে ইতিহাসে জড়িয়ে রয়েছে হাজার বছর ধরে হারিয়ে থাকা ইনকা সভ্যতার সকল স্বর্ণের ঠিকানা। বাবার পদাঙ্ক অনুসরণ করে ড্রেইক শুরু করলো সেই হারানো শহর খুঁজে বেড়ানোর অভিযান। পিছনে কেউটের মতো লেগে আছে রাশান এজেন্টরা। সাথে বিঁষফোড়ার মতো নতুন করে যুক্ত হলো সিআইএ। তাদের লক্ষ্য কি, কেনোই বা তারা শুধু ড্রেইকের জন্যই একের পর এক খুন করে যাচ্ছে?? সেখানে কি শুধুই গুপ্তধন আছে নাকী আছে মহাশক্তিধর আরো কোনো কিছু?

#পর্যালোচনাঃ আমার পড়া শেষ বই "দ্য হান্ট ফর আটলান্টিস" আর এই "র‍্যামজিস গোল্ড", দুইটাই কাছাকাছি ঘরানার বই। ইচ্ছে করেই একই ক্যাটাগরির দুইটা বই টানা পড়লাম ডিফারেন্স বুঝার জন্য। তাই পুরো রিভিউতেই দুই বইয়ের কিছুটা তূলনার ভাব থেকে যাবে।

আর সেই তুলনার প্রথম অমিল হলো দুই বইয়ের বর্ণনায়ন। দুইজন ভিন্ন লেখকের লেখনশৈলী সম্পূর্ন আলাদা হবে এটাই স্বাভাবিক। তবে একই রকম মূল লক্ষ্য রেখে দুইজন দুই ধরণের পন্থা অবলম্বন করেছেন। হান্ট ফর আটলান্টিস যদি আগাগোড়া শুধু একশন নির্ভর হয়ে থাকে, তাহলে র‍্যামজিস গোল্ড হলো পিউর এডভেঞ্চার বই। বইয়ের শুরুটাই প্রচন্ড চমকপ্রদ। একের পর এক দ্রুতগতির ঘটনা, সাথে রহস্যের জাল বিছিয়ে এগুতে থাকে বইয়ের কাহিনী। ৩৫০ পৃষ্টার বইয়ের মোটামুটি শুরুর এক তৃতীয়াংশই বেশ গতিময় আর রোমাঞ্চকর। রহস্যের পাশাপাশি বেশ কিছু একশন দৃশ্য রয়েছে এই অংশে। এই অংশেই আমরা বইয়ের সকল চরিত্রগুলোর ব্যাপারে জানতে পারি, আর এরপর শুরু হয়ে মূল মিশন। এই মূল মিশন শুরুর প্রথম অংশটুকু আবার যথেষ্টই ধীরলয়ে এগিয়ে চলে। প্রথম দিকের সেই উত্তেজনা টুকুই বেশ ভালোভাবেই ঝুলে যায় এই জায়গায় এসে। ব্রাজিলের বিভিন্ন বর্ণনা এবং মিশন শুরুর প্রস্তুতি গুলো বেশ যৌক্তিক হলেও, আরেকটু ফাস্ট পেসড হলে ভালো হতো বলে আমার মনে হয়। এখান থেকে একেবারে শেষ ১০০ পৃষ্টার আগ পর্যন্ত বইটা এরকম ঢিমে তালেই এগুতে থাকে। সেখানে কিছু কিছু জায়গায় রোমাঞ্চ, উত্তেজনা যেমন থাকে তেমনি থাকে পারিপার্শ্বিক বর্ণনার আধিক্য। আমাজন জঙ্গল সম্পর্কে একটা সাম্যক ধারণা পাওয়া যায় এই জায়গাটুকুতে। শেষ ১০০ পৃষ্টা আবার তুমুল গতিতে এগিয়ে চলে। হারানো শহর খুঁজে বেড়ানো, জঙ্গলের গহীনের নৃশংসতা, মৃত্যু আর রহস্য মিলে বেশ উপভোগ্য কিছু সময় কাটবে পাঠকদের এই অংশে।

ওভারঅল আমি এই বইটা "হান্ট ফর আটলান্টিস" এরচেয়ে বেশী উপভোগ করেছি। লেখকের লেখনশৈলী ভালো হলেও সংলাপের পরিমাণ কম ছিলো। আবার পরিমিত পরিমাণের হিউমার থাকাটা ভালো লেগেছে। তবে দিনশেষে এই বইটাও আমার মনের খোড়াক পুরোপুরিভাবে পূরণ করতে পারেনি। এই জায়গায় এসে আমার আবারো "সানবার্ড" এর কথা মনে পড়ে যাচ্ছে। উইলবার স্মিথ অতীত আর বর্তমানের যে একটা সুস্পষ্ট আখ্যান ফুটিয়েছিলেন সানবার্ডে, এই দুইটা বইয়ে তা আমি খুঁজে পাইনি। পুরো বই জুড়েই আধুনিক সময়ের এডভেঞ্চারের বর্ণনা, অতীতে কি ঘটেছিলো, কেনোই বা ইনকারা স্প্যানিশ আগ্রাসনের বিপরীতে এতো দূরে গিয়ে নতুন করে শহর তৈরী করার পরেও ধ্বংস হয়ে গেলো তার কোনো ধারণা বইয়ে দেয়া হয়নি। আমি বর্তমানের চেয়ে এইসব অতীত হারানো শহরগুলোর ইতিহাস (হোক সেটা ধারণার বশবর্তী) জানতে বেশী আগ্রহী।

পরিশেষে এটাই বলবো, যারা একশন প্রিয় এবং রোলার কোস্টার রাইড পছন্দ করেন তাদের চোখে হান্ট ফর আটলান্টিস এগিয়ে থাকবে, আর যারা স্লো বার্ন এডভেঞ্চার পছন্দ করেন তাদের চোখে র‍্যামজিস গোল্ড এগিয়ে থাকবে।

#চরিত্রায়নঃ এই জায়গায় এসে একটা চমকপ্রদ অভিজ্ঞতা হলো আমার। শুরু থেকে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেয়া বইয়ের মূল চরিত্রদের চেয়েও সুন্দরভাবে "স্পেন্সার" চরিত্রটাকে ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন লেখক। যাকে কি না অলমোস্ট বইয়ের অর্ধেকের সময়ে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেয়া হয়!! স্পেন্সারের কারেক্টার ডেভেলাপমেন্টটা আমার অসম্ভব ভালো লেগেছে। শুরু থেকেই রহস্যময় আর স্বার্থপর ভাবে উপস্থাপন করা মানুষটার শেষটুকু অন্যরকম ছিলো। ড্রেইককেও ভালোভাবেই ফুটিয়ে তোলা হলেও, আমার মনে হয় আ্যলি চরিত্রটার সাথে জাস্টিফাই করা হয়নি। একজন আর্কিওলজিস্ট হিসাবে বইয়ে তার কোনো ভূমিকাই পেলাম না বলতে গেলে। না থেকেও ড্রেইক সিনিয়র বই জুড়েই ছিলেন দৃঢ় মনোবলের এক উদাহরণ হয়ে। এছাড়া জ্যাক চরিত্রটাও মোটামুটি ভালোই ফুটিয়েছেন।

#অনুবাদঃ খালেদ নকীব ভাইয়ের প্রথম কোনো অনুবাদ পড়লাম আমি। বলতেই হয় অসম্ভব সুন্দর অনুবাদ করেছেন তিনি। ছোটো ছোটো বাক্যে বেশ সাবলীলভাবে পুরো বইটা ফুটিয়েছেন। ২/৩টা জায়গা ছাড়া এই বই পড়ার সময় আমাকে মূল ইংরেজীর সাথে একেবারেই মেলানোর প্রয়োজন পড়েনি। বেশকিছু জায়গায় ইংরেজি শব্দকে অবিকল রেখে দিয়েছিলেন তিনি। তবে এর মধ্যে ২টা শব্দের ক্ষেত্রে আমার কিঞ্চিৎ আক্ষেপ ছিলো। যেমন,

Asphalt কে আ্যসফল্ট হিসাবে না লিখে পিচঢালা রাস্তা বললেই মনে হয় সুন্দর হতো৷ আরেকটা জায়গায় বাষ্পায়িত সনা (Sauna) বলা হয়েছে, আমি যদ্দুর জানি Sauna বলতে এক ধরণের গরম বাষ্পায়িত স্নানঘর বুঝায়। তো সনা না লিখে, সেটাকে ঘর উল্লেখ করলেই ভালো হতো। "মরাল গ্রীবা" নামক একটা কঠিন শব্দেরও দেখা পেয়েছিলাম। এছাড়া "আন্দিজ" কে "আ্যন্ডিজ" আর "পাইতিতি" কে "পাইটিটি" লেখাটাও বেমানান মনে হয়েছে। যদিও নামের উচ্চারণ যে কোনো রকমেরই হতে পারে। তাই এটা ইগনোরেবল।

মোটামুটি এই ছোটোখাটো কয়েকটা জায়গা ছাড়া পারফেক্ট অনুবাদ।

#প্রোডাকশনঃ অনুবাদকের মতো নয়া উদ্যোগ প্রকাশনীর সাথেও আমার পরিচয় এই বইয়ের মাধ্যমেই হলো। এমনিতে আমি পার্সোনালি চিরকুটের প্রোডাকশনের ভক্ত। তবে নয়া উদ্যোগের প্রোডাকশন দেখে আমার মনে হয়েছে ইনারাই একমাত্র চিরকুট লেভেললে পার করতে পারবেন। চমৎকার পেইজ কোয়ালিটির সাথে টপ নচ বাইন্ডিংস ছিলো এই বইয়ের। ৩৫০ পৃষ্টার বইয়ের একদম প্রথম পেইজ থেকে শেষ পেইজ পর্যন্ত, পুরো বই দুইপাশে মেলে রেখে পড়তে পেরেছি। এই রকম মোলায়েম কিন্তু কার্যকরী বাইন্ডিংস আমি চিরকুটেও পাইনি। জানি না উনাদের অন্যান্য বইগুলোর বাইন্ডিংস কেমন, তবে নয়া উদ্যোগের কাছে আমার অনুরোধ থাকবে সামনে থেকে সকল বইয়েই যেনো এই রকম বাইন্ডিংস দেয়ার চেষ্টা করা হয়। আর এই বইয়ে আদনান আহমেদ রিজন ভাইয়ের করা প্রচ্ছদটা ছিলো আমার কেনা বইগুলোর মধ্যে সেরা ৩টা প্রচ্ছদের একটা। অসম্ভব সুন্দর আর ভালোলাগার প্রচ্ছদ। শুধু প্রচ্ছদের জন্যই এই বই কিনে রেখে দেয়া যায়।

এতো প্রশংসার বাইরেও সম্পাদনা জনিত কিছু ভুল ছিলো। শেষের দিকে ২/৩ বার নাম বিভ্রাট ঘটেছে। এছাড়া বিরাম চিহ্ন এবং দুইটা শব্দের মধ্যে স্পেস জনিত সমস্যাও চোখে পড়েছে শেষের দিকে এসে। আর ব্যক্তিগতভাবে নয়া উদ্যোগের প্রতি আমার ২টা সাজেশন থাকবে। উনাদের ফন্ট সাইজ তূলনামূলক ভাবে একটু ছোটো ছিলো, আর এক সাইজ বড় ফন্টের সাথে লাইন স্পেসিং একটু বড় করলে আমার মনে হয় পাঠক হিসাবে সেটা একটু রিলাক্সিং হতো। কেনো না একটা পেইজে অনেকগুলা শব্দ থাকার কারনে এক পর্যায়ে হতাশ লাগে, কিরে বই শেষ হচ্ছে না কেনো!!? বিশেষ করে সাদামাটা বর্ণনার অংশগুলো এই কারনে পড়ার সময়ে কষ্টকর লেগেছে। আমার মনে হয়েছে আমি যদি এট লিস্ট পেইজ উলটে যেতে পারি, তাহলেও সেটা হয়তো মানসিকভাবে একটু বুস্ট করবে আমাকে। এতে করে হয়তো ৫০/৬০ পেইজের সংখ্যা বেড়ে যাবে। কিন্তু চিরকুট যদি একই প্রোডকাশনে ৪০০ পেইজের বইয়ের মূদ্রিত মূল্য ৫০০ টাকা রাখতে পারে, তাহলে আপনারাও নিশ্চয়ই তা পারবেন 😊।

#রেটিংঃ ৭/১০ (হান্ট ফর আটলান্টিস প্রয়োজনের চেয়েও বেশী দ্রুতগতির ছিলো। এটা আবার সেই তুলনায় একটু ঢিমেতালে এগিয়েছে। তবে এই ধরণের ট্রেজার হান্টিং এডভেঞ্চার ঘরানার বই যেমন হওয়া উচিত তেমনটাই ছিলো। যে কারনে হাই অকটেন একশন সিক্যুয়েন্স না থাকলেও, পরিমিত প্ল্যানিং, একশন, রহস্য, হালকা হিউমার মিলিয়ে ব্যক্তিগত ভাবে এটা আমার কাছে একটু বেশী ভালো লেগেছে।)

#পরিশিষ্টঃ এই সিরিজের আরো ২টা বই আছে। যদি সম্ভব হয় সেগুলোও আনলে ভালোই হতো।

Recommended for Indiana Jones

A hidden treasure, two russian killers, a beautifull girl and one man with a mission. What an excellent start of what I do hope will become a series. Russel Blake did it again. I loved his Jet series after the first book and this one got me hooked by the first page. Well written, witty dialogue and above all a great story. Dam , I can't wait for more from Drake Ramsey

Slow start, a bounty hunter in LA received his fathers dairy and determined to find out more about his father. Determined to finish what he was searching. Exciting reading, like Indiana Jones but better.

I felt like I needed a little adventure amidst the holidays, and so I dug this out of the depths of my downloaded but forgotten Audible books. What a pleasant surprise! By the end, I felt it had pieces of Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, and National Treasure, just a little less sensational. Maybe it didn’t have the constant action of a James Rollins, but I stayed up past 11 to finish listening last night. And it was pretty clean. The characters made some stupid decisions along the way, which annoyed me - I mean the man says don’t call anyone you know, it’s life or death, and the ding dong calls someone who then dies. However, as I got closer to the end of the book, the character grows and maybe that was there to show that growth. A solid adventure novel. I won’t be rushing to read or listen to the next one today, but it is definitely on my list to pick up in the near future.

There were a lot of things I liked about this book - it had interesting action in the rain forest, there were gun fights, a little bit of humor, investigations, conspiracies...plus the audiobook was narrated by Ray Porter. I'd listen to him read the phone book.

Then there were the parts that were less likeable...the female character, who was far more qualified than the hero to traipse around in the jungle searching for lost treasure (she's an archaeologist!) is injured several times, rescued by the hero and sidelined.

I'll try the next one because of the good things, but will have no qualms going no further if the author continues the bad things.

National Treasure redux.

Trust the person you don't, don't trust the one you do. Not one but two miraculous back-from-the-deads. Chased not just by Russian mobsters but also the CIA. Oh, and the female character is pure window dressing. Don't agree? Check how long she doesn't mourn.

The boilerplate was barely touched.

I recently conducted a search for adventure books akin to Indiana Jones and this book was mentioned. My review, therefore, might be more a reflection of unmet expectations than the actual quality. Ramsey's Gold reminded me more of the video game Drake's Fortune than Indiana Jones. Which is kind of ironic as Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which is the newest entry in a rivaling brand, is about Mayan culture and even features Paititi.

The Book is about Drake Ramsey, who studied journalism and wanted to become an investigative journalist. Unfortunately for him, jobs in that particular area are hard to come by and so he has to make a living as a bounty hunter. Then his aunt, whom he didn't know, dies and leaves him his father's diary. He was an explorer searching for Paititi but got killed by a bunch of Russian gangsters on his last excursion. After tracking down his father's partner, Drake decides to look for Paititi himself.

The greatest difference to an Indiana Jones is that these are archeological scavenger hunts. Indy travels to multiple locales looking for clues that finally lead him to the intended treasure/goal. Even in the last crusade, where he too followed his father's journal meaning that most of the research was done by someone else. Coming back to my Drake's Fortune reference this could be described as follows. The first three games were linear and sported somewhere around 24 chapters playing at 4-5 different locations/stages, where Nathan Drake was looking for clues. In this book, you flee from the Russians to Peru and then the search for Paititi begins. It's as if you played the introduction and then immediately skipped to the final stage. As they start their search from his father's last base camp, Drake only has to find the final outpost within a two-mile radius of this camp and then travels directly to Paititi. There is a little puzzle solving in Paititi but other than that you actually get very little insight into the Mayan culture.

If you want a pure action story than you can give this book four stars. But if you wanted to combine this action story with learning facts about the Mayan culture, which is limited to a few chapters, in which they explore Paititi, then my rating is more accurate. Still, this is the first book, maybe there will be more scavenger hunting in the next volume when he doesn't have someone else's notes to rely on. As the characters were likable enough, especially when they started to grow together, I would consider reading the second one.

বইটির প্রতি আগ্রহী হয়ে উঠার মূল কারণ হচ্ছে রেইনফরেস্ট আমাজন। বইয়ের মূল কাহিনি উঠে এসেছে আমাজনের গহীনে লুকিয়ে থাকা ইনকা সভ্যতার পাইটিটি আবিষ্কার অভিযান নিয়ে। যেখানে কাহিনির প্রায় পুরোটা জুড়েই জ্যাক, ড্রেইক, অ্যালি ও স্পেন্সারকে নিয়ে এগিয়েছে ।

কাহিনির প্রথমেই আবির্ভাব হয় ড্রেইক তার পরে দৃশ্যপটে আসে জ্যাক আর জ্যাক কন্যা আর্কিওলজিস্ট অ্যালি। এতো টুকু পর্যন্তই কাহিনি ঠিক ছিলো। এরপরেই যখন স্পেন্সারের আগমন ঘটে তখন আমার মনে হয়েছে,  ড্রেইক র‍্যামেজি কিছুটা আড়ালে পরে যান। অন্যদিকে জ্যাক কারেক্টারটা যেভাবে উপস্থাপন করেছেন সেভাবে সমাপ্তিটা আসলে হয়নি, আমার কাছে অনেক বেশিই সহজ মনে হয়েছে।

বইটির কাহিনি  ঘুচিয়ে আনতে লেখক অনেক সময় নিয়েছেন, সাড়ে তিনশ পৃষ্ঠা বইয়ের ২০০ পৃষ্ঠায় চলে গেছে কাহিনি বিল্ডাপে, কাহিনির ডালপালা মেলেছে অনেক আস্তে।  অন্যদিকে কাহিনির অন্য পক্ষ মানে কেজিবির রাশিয়ানদের লেখক ঠিক যেভাবে উপস্থাপন করেছিলেন,  ব্যাকগ্রাউন্ড দিয়েছিলেন, ঠিক সেইভাবে তাদের সমাপ্তিটা নাটকীয় হয়নি। বইয়ের শেষটাও অনেক আগেই অনুমান করা যায়।

অন্যদিকে কাহিনির মূল উপজীব্য বিষয় আমাজন আর পাইটিটি হলেও এই জায়গায় এসে রোমাঞ্চের স্বাদ খুব বেশি পাইনি। অ্যালি কারেক্টারটা আর্কিওলজিস্ট হিসেবে উপস্থাপন করলেও কাহিনিতে প্রত্নতত্ত্ব বিষয়ক কিংবা ইনকাদের নিয়ে কাহিনি খুব একটা উঠে আসেনি, মোটকথা অ্যালি কারেক্টারটাই আড়ালে পরে গিয়েছিলো, এই কারেক্টার দিয়ে কাহিনিতে কোনো প্রভাব ফেলতে পারেননি লেখক। এছাড়াও পাইটিটি খোঁজে বের করার অভিযানটা অনেক বেশিই সহজ হয়ে গিয়েছিলো। অন্যদিকে বইয়ের একটা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ উপদান ছিলো ড্রেইকের বাবার রেখে যাওয়া ডাইরি যেটা সম্পর্কে লেখক কোনো পূর্ণাঙ্গ ধারণা দেয়নি, যা দিয়েছেন সবই ধোঁয়াশা লেগেছে।

সর্বোপরি বইটি আমার কাছে মোটামুটি ভালো লেগেছে। বইটির কাহিনি কোনোমতেই রোলার কোস্টারের  অনূভুতি দিবে না, তবে ভালো লাগবে। বইটির অনুবাদ নিয়ে বলতে গেলে প্রথম ৬০-৭০ পৃষ্ঠা অনুবাদ অনেক ভারিক্কি মনে হয়েছে, এর পর অবশ্য সাবলীল হয়ে উঠে, শেষের দিকে অনুবাদ একদম পারফেক্ট লেগেছে বেশি,  তারপরও লেখক বেশখানিকটা জায়গাতেই শব্দ প্রয়োগে ওজনদার শব্দ প্রয়োগ করেছেন যা বুঝতে কষ্ট হয়েছে,  অনেক অনেক নতুন শব্দের সাথেও পরিচয় ঘটেছে বইটি পড়ে।

বইটতে নয়া উদ্যোগের প্রোডাকশন কোয়ালিটি চমৎকার হয়েছে, আদনান আহমেদ এর প্রচ্ছদটাও সুন্দর হয়েছে যদিও কভারে ব্যবহৃত স্থাপনার সাথে বইয়ের কোথাও কাহিনির সাথে মিল চোখে পরেনি আমার।

"অ্যামাজনে যা ঘটে, সেটা অ্যামাজনেই থেকে যায়..."

ড্রেইক র‍্যামজি একজন বাউন্টি হান্টার যে একজন ফেরারি আসামীকে ধরতে গিয়ে ঝামেলায় পরে যায়। তাকে কিছুদিন কাজ থেকে বিরত থাকতে বলা হয়। ঠিক সেসময় সে জানতে পারে তার একজন ফুপু আছেন যিনি সদ্যমৃত। তার জন্য উত্তরাধিকার হিসাবে রেখে গেছেন একটা চিঠি, তার বাবার জার্নাল আর টাকা।
সেই জার্নাল তাকে খোঁজ দিলো তার হারিয়ে যাওয়া বাবার পরিচয় এবং বিশাল এক ধন ভান্ডারের খোঁজ।

বাবার বন্ধু এবং বন্ধুর মেয়ের সাথে ড্রেইক বেড়িয়ে পড়লো কিংবদন্তি গুপ্তধনের খোঁজে। সাথে জড়িত হলেন এক সাবেক নেভী সিল।

যেখানে গুপ্তধনের খোঁজ সেখানে বিপদ থাকবে না তা তো না। তাদের পিছু নিলো দুই সাবেক কেজিবি এজেন্ট আর সিআইএ। সবার চাই সে জার্নাল।

মেক্সিকো থেকে রিও ডি জেনেরিও, তারপর অ্যামাজনের গহীন অরণ্যে ইঁদুর বেড়াল খেলায় ছুটে চলা ইনকা সভত্যার হারিয়ে যাওয়া শহর "পাইতিতি" এর খোঁজে।

শেষ পর্যন্ত মিথের সেই শহর খুঁজে পাওয়া গেলো নাকি না সেটা জানতে হলে পড়তে হবে।

শুরুতেই যেটা বলেছিলাম অ্যামাজনে যা ঘটে সেটা সেখানেই থেকে যায়। পদে পদে মৃত্যুর হাতছানি, বিপদসংকুল পরিবেশ জয় করে হয় আপনি ফেরত আসবেন নাহয় হয়ে যাবেন ইতিহাস। সভ্য সমাজের আইন সেখানে চলে না। দূর্গম রেইন ফরেস্টে টিকে থাকাই আইন।

গুপ্তধন খুঁজতে যাওয়া মানেই রোমাঞ্চকর অভিযান। গল্পের সাবলীল বর্ণনা আপনাকে ধরে রাখতে বাধ্য। সেই সাথে পরিবেশ বুঝে কিছু কমিক রিলিফ পড়াটা উপভোগ্য করেছে।

সত্যি বলতে এর থেকেও টানটান উত্তেজনার এডভেঞ্চার থ্রিলার আমার আগে পড়া হয়েছে তাই এটাতে সেই শ্বাসরুদ্ধকর অনুভূতিটা মিসিং লেগেছে আমার।

অনুবাদ সুন্দর হয়েছে। অনেক বানান ভুল ছিলো আর কয়েক জায়গায় নাম উল্টাপাল্টা হয়ে গেছে যেটা চোখে লেগেছে।

Der Roman hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Die Charaktere haben wunderbar miteinander interagiert und lebendig gewirkt. An Spannung hat es ebenfalls nicht gefehlt, sodass ich den Roman verschlungen habe.

Drake hat seinen Vater schon als kleiner Junge verloren, so wuchs er nur mit seiner Mutter auf. Doch diese starb sehr früh an Krebs.
Trotzdem hat er als Jahrgangsbester sein Journalismusstudium absolviert. Doch danach musste er sich als Kopfgeldjäher über Wasser halten.
Als er dann einen merkwürdigen Anruf eines Anwalts bekommt, fängt für ihn ein neues Leben an.
Seine, ihm unbekannte Tante, ist bei einem Autounfall verstorben und hat ihm Geld und das Notizbuch seines Vater vererbt.
Fasziniert liest er dieses und erkennt, dass sein Vater kurz davor war Paiti zu finden. Auch erfährt er, dass sein Vater einen guten Freund hatte, der mit ihm gereist war. Doch warum haben alle ihre Namen nach dem Tod seines Vaters geändert? Und was haben die CIA und russische Killer mit der ganzen Geschichte zu tun?
Drake gerät durch den Besitz des Notizbuches in Gefahr. Aber gleichzeitig erlebt er ein wunderbares, aber sehr gefährliches Abenteuer, bei dem er sich auch noch verliebt.

Ich kann dieses Buch jedem raten. Es war sehr stimmig. Allein die Trainingsbeschreibungen haben mich nach einiger Zeit gestört. Doch trotz allem war der Roman sehr gut.
Ich freue mich schon auf die nächsten Teile.

This book was actually more interesting than I was expecting. I don’t usually read action/adventure and I really liked this book. Drake, Jack, Spencer and Ally are all likable characters. The book starts with a bang and keeps going. The author does a wonderful job of describing the isolation and beauty of the rain forest. This book is just plain fun and I enjoyed it.

Ray Porter is an excellent narrator to me and I had no issues with keeping the characters voices straight and it was a great job of allowing me to develop a mental image of each character. I admit this make had be reaching for Google to research Paititi. I love it when a book has been looking into stuff to research.

I had to deduct a star for two reasons. Reason one is the last hour of the book is pointless and could have easily been summed up in a simple epilogue. Reason two is the treatment of the Ally character that I can only describe as misogynistic. She gets a great introduction only to lumber in damsel in distress mode the rest of the book. Here is just a small example of how terrible the character of Ally is treated: purse gets stolen, she twists her ankle on vine, she is kidnapped, she has a snake crawl on her and guy has to save her. She is non-existent in the last hour of the book to the point you almost forget she is part of the team. I just couldn’t get over this.

Nothing special. Having a flawed main character is fine; and a book written in 2015 with a character so openly "admiring the curves" of every woman he comes across is a flaw. However, the amount of time put into detailing all of the people of color in this book, but not the Caucasians is a bit much. It just felt like every person of color in this novel is given a paragraph of description; usually going over the negative aspects and if there was a good aspect described it was always "to Drake's surprise."
Other than that it's your standard treasure hunt. Lots of cliches piled on top of each other into a "get there before someone else" affair. sometimes the characters break for a chapter or two, just to add a little more unnecessary tension to the story. The biggest example of this I can think of is the woman who wants to be an archeologist getting upset that Drake didn't call of their expedition in favor of earning a quick buck. There was also a few parts where a character or two would defer to Drake when making a plot based decision, cementing him as the psudo-leader, but then would complain incessantly when he made the decision without talking to them.
I knew when I picked up the book on sale that it wasn't going to be the perfect novel, given the description on the back cover, but it's fine.

I quite enjoyed this one, an adventure story very much in the vein of "Indiana Jones" and the "Uncharted" video game series, and the main character "Drake" even has the same name inspired by Sir Francis Drake.

So our main protagonist is Drake Ramsey, a down on his luck bounty hunter so inherits his fathers old journal, detailing his search for the lost Inca City of Paititi, leaving his old life behind, he decides to search for the legendary city. Along the way he picks up some Companions, Jack, a brusque retired soldier who was friends with Drake's father, his daughter Allie, an unemployed archaeologist, and a retired Navy SEAL named Spencer (whose character I loved). Along the way, things are complicated by a duo of Russian Baddies, as well as the C.I.A.

There are a few little nit-picky things that bother me, I really wish authors would stop referring to venomous snakes as "poisonous" and a few little things like that, but it doesn't really detract from the story being told.

There's a pretty good balance of friendship, romance, action, and suspense here, and it's a really fun story, looking forward to read more of Drake's adventures in the future.

Predictable. Derivative. The characters have the depth of wet cardboard. Sexism, racism, and prejudice rule the day. For example:

There's one woman character, who exists only as a sex object and damsel in distress. She's a trained archaeologist, but at NO point does this matter.

Then there's the fact that the bad guys are Russian - classic and tired - who exist only to torture and kill, with a bit of sexual violence thrown in. Ridiculous caricatures.

The 'good' guys are toxic, with zero emotional depth, and the protag is a Mary Sue: he's got a photographic memory, details on how to find a lost city, is talentless but stumbles his way to where he needs to be. And then of course, receives maximum and overstated glory.

The portrayal of Peruvians, and particularly indigenous groups, is sickening. Apparently, everybody is uneducated, conniving, dirty, obsequious, and 'lesser than', while indigenous groups are either a Deus ex machina or murderous. Truly disgusting.

If this had been written in the seventies, it would have been just 'bad'; but as a book written in the modern era, it's an embarrassment. Don't waste your time.

I really enjoyed this. Interesting story, believable characters, and flows easily, I was caught by surprise several times at how far I’d gotten in the story - for a pretty long book, time just flew by and I was never bored or noticed the time. A great escapist book.

Ally’s wasted as a character, an archaeologist who does almost nothing - it’s almost like she was introduced to be the stereotypical love interest but then the author decided to keep that element low key and I appreciated that. These types of stories really don’t need a sex element at all so I’m glad it didn’t go that route. The innocent attraction between Ally and Drake was a vast improvement over the frankly expected over-the-top sex sections.

I liked Drake and Spencer very much (I hope Spencer returns) and I have already bought the rest of the books in the series. Not very original but a tale well told, and I had a great time with it. I will definitely be reading the entire series.
