Dr Ela Manga believes that suffering from stress and burnout has reached epidemic proportions in the world. Being too busy and exhausted is becoming a shared narrative of modern living. In her book The Energy Code, Dr Ela Manga offers a wealth of simple, sophisticated and powerful ways to integrate what she calls “recovery loops” into our everyday lives. This book is packed full of compelling, real-life stories about the debilitating effects of stress and is a treasure trove of practical tips for preventing and recovering from it. The Energy Code ultimately brings awareness to the basic laws and principles of energy, by weaving together the science of Western medicine and Eastern philosophy. “This book is a gift to all who strive for better balance and wellbeing. Ela is uniquely qualified, drawing from her medical practice and her breathwork and holistic practices to bring invaluable insights and coping strategies for the full life we all aspire to have.” – Wendy Lucas-Bull, Chairman of Barclays Africa Group Ltd The Energy Code is specifically relevant for anyone who faces the challenge of supporting healthy and meaningful relationships while pursuing their passion and vocation.
“When seen for what it is, burnout can be a catalyst for growth and change and an opportunity to create a life that is authentically energized and meaningful.”
In this book, Dr. Manga sets the foundation for understanding why so many of us are burnout. She posits, burnout is a symptom of us living out of sync with nature and our natural energy sources. She provides a refreshing and approachable guide to the topic of energy management, pulled from her 20+ years of observations practicing integral medicine, her personal experience, and her study of holistic therapies including ayurveda, mindfulness, and breathwork.
I enjoyed seeing a mutual teacher, Dan Brule's, work on the breath woven throughout this book. Dr. Manga cites many easy and approachable breathing techniques for creating recovery loops including: breath awareness, yawning, the sigh of relief, 20 connected breaths, breathing into the 3 spaces, and breath pauses between activities like writing emails.
I've been looking for a guide that approaches the topic of energy management from a scientific perspective without becoming too technical. Here, the forest is shown through the trees and Dr. Manga expertly crafts a holistic view of the body-mind-heart system of energy generation. I saw aspects of myself in all of her case studies and was left with a deeper understanding of how breath functions as THE primary source of energy and how to harness it, focus it, and listen to its wisdom as I move through life.
This is certainly a book for all of humanity to read. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone from the high schooler to the high-powered CEO. The insight and wisdom that this book contains is certainly priceless. 'The Energy Code' is a book that speaks of the three centers of intelligence in each of us; body, mind and heart. The books delves into each section carefully detailing how we as human beings often forget to tend to our own gardens leaving us tired, depleted and burnt out. This is powerful text that goes down to the science of the brain and the body while also discussing human emotions and how we can tend to this landscape better. I loved reading this book so much and will do a more detailed review in the coming days which I will post here.
If you are someone who needs a serious change or shift in their life I recommend this book to you. Tae your time reading it, make notes, follow through with the lessons, keep it by your nightstand and above all treasure this book and pass it on to someone else. Happy reading!
