In the Bangla literary pantheon, Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay occupies a very special place – particularly for works such as Aranyak (Of the Forest) and Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road). This post, however, is and upload of one of his lesser known works. In Ahban, an educated Hindu Bangalee youth returns to his village after a long time, where he develops a bond with an old Muslim woman. While the woman increasingly starts regarding him like a son, her actions embarrass the youth in front of the other villagers. Like many of Bibhutibhusan’s stories, Ahban is a window into the heart of rural Bengal, but in its depiction of an unrequited love, it is also a lot more.

Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay (Bangla: বিভূতিভূষণ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়) was an Indian Bangali author and one of the leading writers of modern Bangla literature. His best known work is the autobiographical novel, Pather Panchali: Song of the Road which was later adapted (along with Aparajito, the sequel) into the Apu Trilogy films, directed by Satyajit Ray.

The 1951 Rabindra Puraskar, the most prestigious literary award in the West Bengal state of India, was posthumously awarded to Bibhutibhushan for his novel ইছামতী.

ইন্টারমিডিয়েটের বইতে প্রথম পড়েছিলাম। শেষে বুকটা কেমন জানি ভারী হয়ে গিয়েছিলো।

ইন্টারমিডিয়েটে থাকতে পড়েছিলাম প্রথম সেই ২০১৬ সালে। এতবছর পরে আজ বইটি পড়ে আগের মতোই ফিল পেলাম।
বইটি শেষ করে দেখি চোখের কোণে পানি চলে এসেছে।
সত্যিই বিভূতিভূষণ এর লেখার কোনো তুলনা হয়না।
উনি সবসময় আমার পছন্দের তালিকায় প্রথমে থাকবেন। কেননা ছোট থেকেই একাডেমীক বইয়ে ১-২ টা করে প্রতিবছর গল্প পড়তে পড়তে উনার লেখার প্রেমে পরে যাই।
আমার একটা প্রশ্ন মাঝে মাঝেই আসে, উনি বেচে থাকলে এই বিংশশতাব্দীতে এসে কি টাইপের গল্প, উপন্যাস লেখতেন?

বছর দেড় পার হয়ে গেলো।
কি অলৌকিক ব্যাপার বুড়ি মারা যাওয়ার পরদিন সকালেই লেখক গ্রামে আসলেন। (বুড়ি আগের রাতে মারা গেছেন)
যেন প্রকৃতি নিজেও চাচ্ছে বুড়ির শেষ সময়ে তার কাফনের কাপড়টা তার চাওয়া মানুষের থেকেই জুটে.....

২০২১ সালের প্রথম বই। বাসায় বসে অফিসের কাজ করার ফাঁকে কানে হেডফোন লাগিয়ে শেষ করে ফেললাম।
