3.5 because the art is still cute but it's like the author isn't entirely too sure exactly what type of story he wants to write. There's a little bit of everything in this volume and it doesn't meld as seamlessly as it did in the first two volumes. I'm hoping it's an anomaly and not a sign of the series deteriorating.
I love this series. It mixes some adult themes, cool science fiction ideas, and sharp art in a very entertaining package. Clockwork Planet has felt modern in the best of ways. It’s the science fiction manga for the reader who wants a bit of quirk with an entirely fresh steampunk concept.
This volume opens up where we left off, with Marie joining Naoto’s school to stay hidden after faking her own death. The concept certainly flipped the purpose of the manga and created a fish out of water situation. The creators use that to its full extent and show what it would be like if a genius kid joined a school that’s way too easy for her. Add in the fact that Naoto isn’t so great as his classes, yet has an incredible ear that can help him fix impossibly broken machines, and you have a fun dynamic at play. This gives the manga a lighter humorous angle whilst RyuZu’s robot sister AnchoR carves up some special ops folks and continues to cast an angel of death vibe.
These elements build tension and end up blowing up when a secret message–over the illegally used radio waves–reaches the heroes. To say the message is graphic and adult is an understatement. It made me laugh, but some might fight it offensive as it involves certain male and female parts in its code. I say code, because this somewhat graphic and comical message ends up having greater meaning later. It might just be the most graphic out of nowhere message to have a bigger purpose I’ve ever seen. This kicks off the second half of the book, which brings a darker and mysterious tone to the manga that shifts things nicely.
The last quarter of the book continues to show AnchoR much more and she looks incredibly creepy, but also cool. The art overall is good, but some epic double page spreads in the end of the manga are real showstoppers. Showing size and scale beautifully with a ton of detail, the creators make it clear the threat is very big and possibly impossible to stop. Given each of our heroes has a talent it’ll be fun to see how they can save the day next volume.
The series is fun, with well written characters who play off each other very well. Clockwork Planet is a manga that always feels fresh.
After the "death" of Marie with the incidents of volume 2 we start out with her trying to fit into a normal school environment to avoid those that would hinder her investigation. Sadly what is a super genius with above average physical training to do but excel at everything...and get board. Needless to say Maria is not my favorite character in the series preferring the colder (her comments can be hurtful to people) and logical RyuZU and her dedication to her slightly better than absolute trash master who reactivated her in the first volume.
Also I know it is common enough to have a beach scene in a lot of anime and manga but I thought the world was suspended on a series of cogs to protect people from the desolated world below. Where is the water and sand coming from for a beach setting (though it is mostly in Naoto's head I think including when he takes pictures of RyuZU in various swimsuits in this volume.)
After receiving a easily mistaken message over questionable means (certain things are illegal in the clockwork world we take for granted in ours) our quartet make figure out the clues and find a city strangely dead and a great danger lurking underground. Also there they discover the Initial-Y series Automata AnchoR with a mysterious mask upon her face and under the control of an unknown force. Only time will tell who will survive the clash of Automatas to come.
My favorite part would probably be when the trio of agents were infiltrating their target and one of them goes on about the trouble with girls that throw fits if you grab their rear a little and his partner responds with The world would be a better place if someone gave him a good stab. :)

The story is still sort of garbage, but the characters are fun and the art is decent. I’m enjoying this series so far, but it’s far from being the best of mangas.
So, I've been watching the anime of this, and I've not really been loving it. I couldn't wait for it to end to be honest. The manga however, is very good! It's so much better than the anime, so if you watched the anime and weren't that impressed...give the manga a try! I've been looking forward to each new volume and with this one, things are picking up even more!
We spend a bit more time at the high school in this volume, than we do in the anime, with Marie fitting right on in..or not as the case may be! I actually enjoyed that part of the arc and I hope we get some more scenes there because they crack me up. It's definitely more extended than I remember the anime being so it's nice to see some fresh new scenes.
We get Saionji, who's a new character as far as I'm aware...the anime kind of blurs in to meh for me. I'm wondering if Saionji is on to Marie or not, but he was only in it for a little bit...I thought he was a bit of a prat but I'd be intrigued if he popped up again to see what role he'll play in the story if any. It seemed like he might have a part to play but we'll see.
I love how fonts are used with speech in this manga, I'm not going to lie. RyuZU has a very mechanical/computer kind of font and Saionji has a flowery one to match his attempts at flirting with Marie. You get such a sense of tone and how the voice would sound from it, it really adds to the reading experience.
I really love Vermouth! And I'm loving RyuZU more and more, she cracks me up. Marie is still my total favourite though, I love her! She makes me chuckle and she's so intelligent and badass. Naoto isn't as irritating as in the anime, and is more bearable in the manga, but I still haven't warmed up to him 100%. I think next volume will make or break this series for me.
In this volume we get more of the history of the Clockwork Planet which I really loved, I want to know so much more about it and I've been itching for this kind of material, I hope we'll get more and more as the volumes go on!
Clockwork Planet is much better than the anime by far, and the manga always gives me a chuckle. Particularly the interactions between everyone in the group! I really love how it's drawn among various other little touches, and I'm liking the pace it has so far. I'm still intrigued, and I'm excited to see where this is going to go next, and how much more it'll differ from the anime!
