The Drifter: Book I - The Beginning

Rate this book
Max Cordell had it all…a very lucrative career, two successful karate schools, and a beautiful wife and baby boy. Not bad for a kid who grew up in the ghetto! Max never forgot his roots. He spent his life helping others—especially those from his old neighborhood. Life was good until he was falsely accused of a heinous crime, thrown into prison. Max lost everything, but the one thing they couldn’t take was his soul. By the time Max was exonerated, he had lost all faith in humanity. Scarred for life, Max left the city he loved and became “The Drifter.”

This book had a lot of potential, there are numerous plot points that would have made for a great story or a great book. Unfortunately all of them get a breeze over treatment. Almost every 10 pages we are done with a plot point and moving onto the next one. It all gets resolved in 10 pages.

My biggest pet peeve is that this book tells instead of shows. I would love to have seen Max's interactions play out with characters and get inside his head with what he is feeling. Instead we get "he felt like this", "he did this". We don't deep dive into what all this really means for Max. We don't get enough of seeing how he interacts with other characters.

With that being said, I am thinking about checking out the second book to see if these things improve.
