I have so many things to say that I kind of don’t even want to write this because I’m not sure I can get everything out coherently. This book made me irrationally angry with how bad it was.
I’ll start off by saying the narrator did this book absolutely no favours. She was so monotone and the quality of the audiobook itself was horrific.
Okay, let’s try and do this😮💨
The main character was whiny, a constant victim with no other personality traits, unlikable, and just downright stupid. Picture this. A 23 year old woman is upset she doesn’t have superpowers like everyone around her following the supernova. Valid. I’d be pissed I can’t lie. She decides she’s gonna manifest herself some powers. That’s right, she’s gonna try to walk on water and grow plants into existence. Odd? Sure. But you can’t deny that if everyone around you had special abilities you wouldn’t at least try and bring them out. Then, after crossing off 10 superpowers that she hasn’t got, Madeline decides that the one power she’s definitely likely to have is the ability to fly. So what does she do? That’s right ladies and gentlemen, Madeline, aged 23 (fully grown adult woman) climbs a huge tree and, willing herself to fly, jumps out of said tree. Now it’s safe to say our dear old Madeline here, alas, could not fly, but did in fact break her leg, her ribs, and get a concussion. I mean this scene was so ridiculous it genuinely made me laugh. What could’ve potentially saved it would have been the hospital scene after where it could’ve been made into something funny for all the family to joke about and laugh together. Instead, everyone’s sat there not calling her out on the sheer stupidity?
She was just such an unlikable character throughout the whole book. She didn’t think about anyone but herself and how she’s jealous of her brother and how she’s so sad and lonely. Boohoo. If there was any character development I could overlook it, but there wasn’t…. so I won’t. She’s so consumed by her own victim card that when her neighbour saves her from literally getting stabbed, instead of thanking him and hearing him out, she runs home and cries about the fact he didn’t tell her he’s also got superpowers! I mean get a grip hun it’s not always all about you!
Speaking of, this neighbour she’s been supposedly eying up for at least a year but has had very minimal interaction with ends up being the love of her life after just one and a half dates. If the chemistry was there, it could very well be plausible, sure, but where the chemistry was I couldn’t possibly tell you bc it sure wasn’t in this book.
The writing and dialog was at times painful to sit through. It was clunky, basic, and not very creative. It read a little like a script and I just couldn’t connect with any of the side characters bc they were all so lacklustre and had zero depth.
The separate Vincent storyline going on just confused me more than anything. I don’t really get why he was there? Did the author realise how uninteresting Madeline was and decide to add in another uninteresting character in the hopes they would cancel each other out? I just really don’t get the purpose of Vincent, especially bc at the end (spoilers) they didn’t even interact? I mean, again, it just makes no sense. In the epilogue, Madeline’s talking about some guy who crashed into a hospital and that’s all the interaction between the two characters. If Vincent’s pov was meant to show the world falling apart that could’ve very easily been done through Madeline’s pov. It kind of was bc she watched the news and read online articles, so again, Vincent hun you’re not needed.
I know he was out to kill her but it’s like the author forgot that was his purpose and just wrapped things up. I mean what a mess.
So in conclusion, there was no suspense, the characters were basic and boring, the protagonist was whiny, self absorbed, and made ridiculous decisions, the writing was clunky and the dialog didn’t flow, the ending was extremely anticlimactic, and the additional pov was unnecessary and pointless.
I am genuinely sorry to be this harsh, and I wish there was at least something positive I could say, but I really really didn’t enjoy this at all.
