Responding to the Lion's Roar Join comedian, actor, and writer Torry Martin as he shares his latest outlandish misadventures!
Whether he's dealing with pythons in South Africa, pickpockets in Ireland, or grizzlies in Alaska, Torry shares his blunders and the life lessons they've taught him along the way. Through each true story, he shares what he has learned about overcoming any obstacle that might hold us back from following God's will—wherever He might lead.
Torry's comical adventures will show you how to recognize, receive, and bravely respond to the Creator's call for your life. His mishaps, mayhem, and madcap revelations prove that no matter how broken you might think you are, when you listen closely, you will hear God's voice—roaring like a lion. "There's a very short list of books that made me cry and laugh out loud— and that brought me closer to Christ. This is the second Torry Martin book to occupy that list." Dallas Jenkins, director of The Resurrection of Gavin Stone and The Shepherd
This is definitely not as good as Of Moose and Men: Lost and Found in Alaska, but it's hard to go wrong with books by the guy who created Wooten Bassett -- and modeled Wooten after himself!
Torry Martin is such a hoot! I loved his earlier book and when I saw this one, I knew I wanted to read it. He manages to take hilarious episodes from his life and turn them into truths from God. My husband and I read this together as a devotion in addition to our devotions we do separately. The very first story here is roll in the floor laughing. But then we learn a lesson from God in it.
*My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book via Net Galley. My opinions are entirely my own.
When I read Torry’s first book, Of Moose and Men, I was hooked on the author’s style and message. He is a comedian. I was reading it at the beach, out loud with some friends. It was so captivating, a gentleman we’d never met asked to join us and he listened in too. The book was that compelling. Torry hit hard subjects but he also had humor weaved through it that had us cracking up.
This new book, The Call of the Mild, was similar to his first one in that Torry hit some very tough subjects but with humor mixed in. So, it is very readable. I applaud Torry for being vulnerable enough to reveal his personal struggles—some he has overcome, and some he is working on overcoming. This gave me a profound respect for this author. And it also made me realize I can be a work-in-progress too, and that God loves me just the same just like he loves Torry. Of the two books, I like The Call of the Mild the best because Torry is so vulnerable.
I am anticipating that Torry’s next book will have an excellent message as well.
The Call Of The Mild Is a beneficial devotional. It is absolutely enjoyable - enjoyable - devotional? Yes enjoyable devotional. The author shares personal stories that are so funny - most of them - and are Spiritual but not blatant if you know what I mean - he also gives great Scriptures with it - the devotional is not a two second devotional, it is a little longer than that - this is something I have been looking for. I hope you have been looking for it to. It is alarmingly charming. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all of the opinions in this review are all my own.

The Call of the Mild is a sequel (if memoirs can have sequels) to Torry Martin's earlier book "Of Moose and Men." This later book chronicles more of Torry's adventures (and mis-adventures) in a variety of settings. These snippets of Mr. Martin's life are turned into parables, each with some nugget of spiritual application or insight.
As with Of Moose and Men, The Call of the Mild is laugh-out-loud funny. Unlike the earlier book, Mr. Martin shows more vulnerability with his audience, which leads to some truly excellent moments.

Another fantastic book from Torry Martin! Full of stories that will make you laugh and cry, Torry brings you deep Spiritual truths that he's learned from his life - sometimes the hard way. I really appreciate this volume in particular because of how real Torry is in it. He isn't afraid to admit his mistakes and struggles so that others can glean encouragement and growth.
This is a great book, BUT if you’ve read Of Moose and Men don’t start reading this one expecting more of the same. Yes it’s got some hilarious stories but it’s a far more serious book, in saying that it is well worth reading. Torry speaks of his struggles more in this one but I love his reflections on Gods love and grace in his life.
I was very excited to buy this book after having bought OF MOOSE AND MEN for a gift for someone a few years back.
This book will leave you laughing and thinking. And... if you were to think that this seems sort of random in the stories, fear not, as you progress through the book it all adds up.
Prepared to think about your own calling. Very recommended read.
I read a chapter of this over the course of 8 months filling in between books. I read “Of moose and men” first and liked that one better but this is still good. I do think that at times Tory tried to hard to be funny and sometimes it’s not. Overall great book and read more from him.
This book occasionally amused me and frequently annoyed me. Martin writes like his target audience is hyperactive five-year-olds with short term memory loss. He’ll tell a joke (in the loosest sense of the word), deliver the punchline, and then keep telling the joke. He would have been well-served to have a ferocious editor to cut the noise. Someone to edit with impunity. It had a moment or two of true, solid humor, but not nearly enough to redeem it, unfortunately. Ultimately, this book could have been a lot funnier and maybe even good if it had been held to a higher standard in the editing process.
Loved this book so much! While it looks like it's just a book written for comedic value, there's so much more to it! Every chapter Torry Martin tells a hilarious true story and connects a Christian gospel message to it. He's honest, isn't afraid to confess his flaws, and exaggerates the stupidity of many of his bad decisions. This is a wonderful book for readers of all ages.
This book is full of humorous, and sometimes touching, tales of Torry's adventures and misadventures, with lessons for our spiritual walk interspersed, closely connected to said tales. I really enjoyed the stories - the writing was good and the content clean, mostly humorous but with some more serious parts at times too. The lessons brought out by the author were cleverly worked in so as not to feel forced or out of place, and helpful as well. In fact, at one stage I even put the book down for a little while because the lesson was hitting so close to home and I wanted to think about it for a while. Otherwise, I found the book compelling enough to make me want to keep reading - and reading.
While humour is a highly personal thing, I thoroughly enjoyed the humour of this book overall, and would happily recommend this book to others for both the stories and the lessons - with the caveat that you may want to read it when no one else is around, because I found myself laughing out loud quite often - and that can be embarrassing when others are around!
Note that I received a free copy of the book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
The Call of the Mild by Torry Martin and Doug Peterson is a fun read. I was not sure what I was getting into when I picked up this book. I was surprised what a fun read it is! The author tells his wacky life experiences in an entertaining way yet somehow manages to weave in truths about God. And it works! I loved this book and I would highly recommend it. It is such a fresh take on who God is and it reminds readers that life is meant to be fun. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
