Prepare to enter a world of magic, menace, and chaos. This is the electrifying tale of a world, and a timeless, magical romance, on the verge of catastrophic collapse.
i can count on one hand the number of books i've been unable to finish in a long history of voracious reading. sadly, this one just got added to the list. too long and drawn out, the writing is juvenile and the characters devoid of...well, character. the storyline is repetitive and shallow. sorry, i don't usually leave such negative feedback, but this one was such a letdown.
The story was interesting, but bares a strong resemblance to Harry Potter novels. It is also almost 1700 pages long. I so wanted this book to end. I also wanted a conclusion. Yes, I finished the book? The conclusion was “to be continued.” Really? After 1700 pages! So the plot gets two stars.
The writing gets a failing grade. The wrong words are used. Do you ever dictate a text, email, or other? Does the system sometimes (often) insert the wrong word? Do you read it and correct those errors? The author obviously did not. Also, the wrong character names were inserted. And the grammar was subpar.
While JK Rowling was writing for young readers about young people, this book is primarily about adults with frequent sexual descriptions. And the Harry Potter series did not include character identity mistakes nor the wrong words nor poor grammar. So save your time and read JK Rowling, or anything else.
This book was absolutely stellar. Loved all the characters. The action scenes were insane. I could totally see this as a series on Netflix (although the special effects would probably bankrupt the company). Can we get a spin-off series featuring Igor the vampire? Easily one of my favorite characters. And I loved the transgendered witch rock band, Retro Magic. They could have their own series, too. Five stars!
The writer has given us a bleak view of what loci in a world of a mixture of human and wizard/witches might be like. It is a well written tale by a very talented author. Her characters rise off the page like a magical spell. I found it almost impossible to put this book down even when my eyes were just about closing from lack of sleep. I look forward to reading the sequel that surely will turn me into a sleep deprived zombie.
