Misadventures with My Roommate

Rate this book
Blake Monroe hasn’t had the easiest life, but she’s never been one to dwell on her misfortunes, preferring to see the world as a place where you get what you give.

Having had an especially troubling childhood, Blake’s aware she doesn’t exactly fit the definition of “normal.” Her lack of filter, dry sense of humor, and uncanny ability to read people make her rather unique—and difficult to live with. When her latest roommate has had enough of her antics, Blake decides living with a man might suit her better.

Gavin Gibson’s a dreamer whose artsy aspirations don’t meet the high expectations of his wealthy family. Cast off and cut off, Gavin needs a place to live. When he’s invited to share Blake’s quaint apartment, he cannot pass it up. With a knack for spotting the good in others, Gavin can see past Blake’s quirks—and neither of them can ignore their sexual chemistry.

As sparks fly, their genuine affection for each other grows, and Gavin begins to break down Blake’s defenses. But can Blake open up to reveal the damage she’s worked so hard to conceal?

Elizabeth Hayley is actually “Elizabeth” and “Hayley,” two friends who love reading romance novels to obsessive levels. This mutual love prompted them to put their English degrees to good use by penning their own. They learned a ton about each other through the process, like how they clearly share a brain and have a persistent need to text each other constantly. They live with their husbands and kids in a Philadelphia suburb. Thankfully, their children are still too young to read.

Well. First I’d like to say I’ve never read anything that the author pair, Elizabeth Hayley, has written. I saw this cover and the blurb on NetGalley and knew I had to request it.

But a blurb is just a blurb, and a cover is just a pretty cover until the author/authors fill the book up with some words. The thing is Elizabeth Hayley didn’t just give us “some words.” They give us a roommates to lovers story that was perfect parts emotional, fun, and sexy. The writing was quick. The banter is witty, and will have you chuckling. It’s just a GOOD read.

Blake our heroine is quirky and blunt, but she has a deep past. The hero Gavin seems like an average Joe, but the way he is with Blake and all her personality just shows her the perfect cup of Joe... ok that joke is funnier if you read this book. Which means you should read this book ASAP! I promise if you enjoy friends to lovers, or roommates to lovers, you will LOVE this quick read from Elizabeth Hayley!

This was a nice read for a time when you are too busy and don’t want to think about anything. I did end up enjoying it, but it was nothing special.

Described in one word, it would be:
description

Quick fast and honestly not very impactful. It has been about a week since I finished this book, and I barely remember what happened. I was actually so tempted to dnf this book in the first 20% because Blake was so dislikeable and weird this is coming from a weird person., like her humor is really difficult to discern. She is very sarcastic, but a sarcastic that is so dry it seems they actually believe what they are saying, and you end up thinking the person is stupid. If you are looking for a heroine that is super closed off and doesn't’ want ties, she is one of them. And our main guy was cute, good and with very normal problems.

I was also thinking this book was gonna be funnier than it was, suddenly it became so dark and heavy but I wasn’t invested to be feeling something. I would have probably liked this story more if it was carried out in a longer book, but it felt very rushed, like a novella size.

I honestly don’t have anything else to say. Perhaps read it if you are a fan of the other works of the author, but I was mostly disappointed.

Favorite Quotes:

Blake instantly grew wary of this woman who looked like the fate of everyone she encountered that day depended on whether or not she got a giant container of coffee— though it made Blake feel a bit like a superhero barista. With this one order, she would be saving this woman’s coworkers from being murdered with office supplies.

I don’t think my brain has room for all of this. I’ve been a bartender for four years, and I still don’t remember how to make most of the drinks. I just throw whatever in a glass, and people know better than to complain.

Celeste had recommended Blake refer to herself as eccentric instead of saying she was “batshit crazy,” which was off-putting. Go figure.

He’d first noticed the odd choice in tile earlier in the day when he was talking to Blake and Celeste but had decided not to ask Blake why she’d chosen to decorate a place where people ate with tiles depicting silhouettes of people posing in various Kama Sutra positions. The fact that he found himself hoping she planned to finish the remaining few square feet alarmed him slightly.

Even as a child, her life was like a Dr. Seuss book of psychiatric professionals.

My Review:

I loved this delightfully clever and smartly crafted book. I smirked, giggled-snorted, and even barked aloud more than a few times at the delightfully off-beat, odd, intensely amusing, and wickedly clever yet shameless utterances and thoughts that flittered through Blake’s rather zany and unfettered brain. She appeared unhindered by concerns for social conventions and tended to blurt out her vividly colorful thoughts and frank observations, which were often on-point yet prone to be irreverent, painfully blunt, socially inappropriate, and outrageously comical. I initially wondered whether she may have some sort of developmental or brain damage, yet she was also verbose and uncannily observant and witty, as well as wildly imaginative and clever in her inner musing and fantasies. I adored her as well as the hapless and befuddled Gavin Gibson, who was as drawn and consumed by the enigmatic Blake as I was. Blake rattled him and sucked him into her vortex of unpredictability, sensuality, and addictively compelling attraction; which was the best thing that ever happened to the both of them. This was my first exposure to the brilliant team of Elizabeth Hayley and I was an instant fangirl and convert for their cult. I greedily want all their rave-worthy and delightfully clever arrangements of words.

Another great addition to the Misadventures series which I have really enjoyed reading.
This is my first by the pair of authors known as Elizabeth Hayley.
Blake the heroine was just so quirky and blunt to the point of rudeness (no filter) but in such an amusing way that I couldn't help finding myself thoroughly entertained by her behavior and antics.
She has serious issues that lead her to keep people at a distance . Having chased away several female roommates she decides that maybe a male roommate is the answer.
Fortunately for Blake her co worker at the coffee shop Gavin that she just recently met is about to be evicted through no fault of his own .
It doesn't take long before sex enters the equation once they become roommates .
Gavin is such a sweet, normal, down to earth sort of guy and he appears to be just what Blake really needs if she doesn't somehow manage to push him away.
I loved the chemistry between these two. This was a highly entertaining read .☕☕☕

**I received an early copy of this title courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**

While Misadventures with My Roommate is part of the "Misadventures" series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. This was my first Elizabeth Hayley book, but it certainly won't be my last. She crafted a fast-moving, humor filled book with characters you can't help but love.

Blake is a breath of fresh air. She's quirky and she has no filter between her thoughts and what comes out of her mouth, which has certainly gotten her into her share of hot water. When her current roommate announces she's moving out, Blake has to find a new one preferably fast. She tells her friend Celeste that after a long string of failures with female roommates, maybe it's time for a guy roomie.

Luckily for Blake, her co-worker at the coffee shop, Gavin, has just learned he's going to be homeless in a matter of days after his current roommate was using his rent as drug money. Needless to say he jumps at the chance to move in.

With a clear attraction between the two roommates, it becomes clear it's not a matter of "if" they sleep together, but "when" and the only thing Blake makes very clear is that it is about sex and nothing more. She doesn't do relationships. Will Gavin be the one to finally break down some of the walls that Blake has built up so high? Or will this roommate situation end just as all the previous ones have?

There was so much to love about this book. It was heartbreaking at times, but it was also full of humor and heart. You were rooting for these characters from the outset and it was one of those books that made my heart happy.

I think I’m broken. I’ve absolutely loved this series of books, but my last two haven’t been what I expected. I made it to the midpoint if this one and initially enjoyed the female character’s quirky behavior. But it eventually lost its luster. Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish. Maybe it’s me...

Absolutely one of the best books I've ever read. I don't know anyone who wouldn't identify with Blake: a girl so beaten down, she's chosen to shut herself off and wall herself in, so as to avoid getting hurt any more. Her plan works, until Gavin chooses to see beyond her fences and love her anyway. Note that I don't say tear DOWN her fences. He's simply okay with them, accepting her for where she is, scars and pain and all. Best of all, he adores her even more for them. Honestly, he's ten THOUSAND kinds of a true romance hero: accepting this woman for the beauty he already sees in her, not the way he wants to change her. I honestly sobbed my way through so much of this book--when I wasn't laughing, smiling, or swooning. An unforgettable read! I am a avid convert to this incredible writer's fandom!!

Not much happened, I would've dnf it but I liked the MCs they were normal people with every day struggles, not your typical new adult characters, so I kept reading to know what will happen next and ended up enjoying it.

Third person, Dual-POV, HAE. Can be read as standalone.
Release date: March 27, 2018

His ability to roll with her quirks was... kind of endearing. Though it also made her wonder if he was even crazier than she was.

A girl with little to no personal connections, by her choice, and a guy who's in need of a place to stay, and in turn shakes her entire world up.

If you're a fan of roomies-to-lovers, this is the book for you. Full of humor, steamy romance, and two characters that are equally lovable. I haven't read Elizabeth Hayley before, but I most definitely will now.

From the beginning, we're thrust into the wild, wonderful world of Blake. She's quirky and has zero filter from brain to mouth but that made me love her all the more. She's in need of a roommate as her current one is moving out, and tells her best friend (and just as likable character) Celeste, that maybe she needs to try living with a guy for change.

Enter Gavin, a man who's about to be thrown onto the streets because his current roommate is using his rent money for drugs. When he's offered a place to stay with a coffee shop coworker, Blake, he jumps at the chance, despite his attraction to her, and her obvious attraction to him.

Gavin had seemed to solidly friend-zone her, which wasn't a place she could remember ever being. It was a desolate, horrifying place, and she wanted out of there stat.

So begins their, often strange, living arrangement.

Blake makes it known that she's set on having him, but a relationship is out of the question. Gavin agrees, at first, too.

But they both widen each other's horizons. Soon, Blake is sharing more with him than she ever shared with anyone else, and he's seeing his love of photography as more than just a disappointment to his parents.

Blake is hesitant to acknowledge the feelings between them, because all she's ever known is people leaving her behind.

It's funny, it's heartbreaking. All around, I had a smile on my face and genuine feelings for these two characters. Can't wait to read the other installments.

'Til next time cuties ;)

I absolute love roommate to lovers romances! So happy this was a book in this series <3

Misadventures with My Roommate was a really fun read. In it, you will meet Blake and Gavin. Of course Blake is in a drought right now. She also is one awesome person because she has no filter - which I loved! Then there's Gavin, who works with her and needs a place to live. Enter their sexy roommate situation!

Now these two had AMAZING chemistry once they were in a close space! It honestly didn't take long for sparks to fly between these two either. They were also a little bit unique for a couple in this series (or maybe most contemporary/romance books) because they were completely honest with one another. It was pretty refreshing to read about them because secrets and non-supportive people are annoying.

Overall, super happy that this was on audible and can't wait to dive into the rest of this series!!

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

What was this? It’s a no for me.

Here I am with another unpopular opinion. This book didn’t do it for me in the slightest. I wanted the sexy and great reads that I came to expect in the Misadventures series and this sadly was not one of them.

This was told in third person POV which isn’t my favorite to read in so there’s that. The characters weren’t relatable and were quite bland if I’m being honest. I found Blake weird and rude, not cute and quirky and Gavin had no personality! And the story isn't much better, I couldn’t even remember key parts after I stop reading.

It goes without saying, but this was my least favorite of the Misadventures series. Will I read the next one? Of course, this just one just fell flat.

I would’ve loved an epilogue, but it’s ok because this was really cute. Usually when authors write a heroine who is supposed to come off as funny, it’s usually really cringey and awkward. With this heroine though, I actually laughed at most of the stuff she said. And the hero was a sweetheart.

While I did feel a slight disconnect between the quirkiness with the main character and the seriousness of her past, I loved these two together. The weirdness, how quirky Blaire was, their want for each other. It was fun.

Blake is such a unique character and I think I would've enjoyed the book more had we been given the opportunity to learn more about her. Gavin was the perfect counterpart to ground her quirkiness and the chemistry between them was entertaining. While I did like the book, it felt very one dimensional and I found myself putting it down several times because I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters and the story as a whole beyond the surface. Misadventures with my Roommate has great potential though and I think that the authors could make it great by expounding on the characters and fleshing out the plot a bit more. 3 out of 5 wine glasses.

Review For: Misadventures with My Roommate by Elizabeth Hayley Misadventures with My Roommate by Elizabeth Hayley is book Ten in the "Misadventures" series.  This is the story of Blake Monroe and Gavin Gibson.  This book is a standalone book. Blake had a emotional childhood that has left her with barriers around her heart along with a quirky attitude has help stopped with anyone really getting close to her.  When her coworker Gavin needs a place to stay she thinks to offer him the room.  Gavin I would say is the compete opposite of Blake where he is more trusting and able to see Blake for who she really is instead of who she tries to be.  Being around Gavin has made Blake think more about what she really wants and what she no longer wants to act like.  Gavin and Blake did heat up my pages and was a really enjoyable read! A great book to a really great series!

This book was bad.
Laughably so.
The only reason I checked it out was because the second paragraph was so bad it made me laugh and I needed to laugh.
I don't think I can even review it. It wasn't sexy, funny, or even remontely interesting.
The only reason I finished it was to see if any of the plot holes were recognized.
They were not.

Misadventures with my roommate was a pretty good quick read and a good addition to the Misadventures series. This book was about 2 co-workers who are attracted to each other taking the change on becoming roommates after Blake's old roommate decides to up a live and Gavin gets evicted.

This book will have you literally laughing out loud. Blake is the perfect heroine, I mean she has NO brain to mouth filter and says exactly what she is thinking.. Usually people just don't know how to take her. That is until Gavin comes into play. These 2 are co-workers at the local coffee shop and the chemistry these two have is amazing and when they move in together....LOOK OUT!!

So if you are looking for a good beach read I would make sure this is on your list. The beginning of the book is a little slow but it take off after a couple of chapters.

This is the romance between two roommates. They work at the same coffee shop, and the heroine invites the hero to be her new roommate since her previous one just moved out. They end up have a friends with benefits situation that turns into something more.

This was not for me. I could see the tension and lust between the two characters, but not the love.

Misadventures with my Roommate was a super fun read. It was fun to watch Gavin and Blake grow.

Blake has a dark past that she cannot seem to move from. She is aggressive and always speaks her mind, but will hold back true emotion and not let anyone too close.. Enter Gavin.. She finds herself telling him things that no one knows.. These 2 have some amazing chemistry as the walls start to come down. Is Gavin just what she needed to let go?!

Like all of the Misadventures I recommend reading this. It was fun, fast and full of surprises.

I wanted to like this book, but just couldn't. I was expecting a cute, sexy, and fun read and instead got a truly odd story that didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I couldn't relate to the characters at all,. The main character, Blake, was hands down the strangest character I have ever come across. I honestly thought she was mentally handicapped or maybe autistic? Nothing about this book was appealing to me. But, that is my opinion. Apparently, looking at the other reviews, people did enjoy it, I'm not one of them.

Misadventures With My Roommate is the sexy feel good type of romance I have come to expect from the Misadventures series. Blake hasn’t had an easy life. A rough childhood has left her with little to no filter, a dream sense of humor and a knack for reading people - all of which make her rather difficult to love with. After her latest roommate calls it quits, she thinks maybe she’d have better luck with a male roommate. Enter Gavin. Gavin is an artistic dreamer who finds himself without a place to live when his wealthy parents cut him off because he is not living up to their high expectations. Gavin has the ability to spot the good in others and Blake’s goodness shines through all her quirks. As they get to know each other, their affection grows and their sexual attraction becomes impossible to ignore. Blake finally has someone in her life who is ok with her personality quirks that usually drives normal people crazy, but can she find the courage to open up the Gavin and show him the past she has spent her life trying to change?

I absolutely adored Blake and Gavin. Blake is one of my favorite female characters I have read lately. These two were so perfect for each other and I just loved reading their story.

FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH NET GALLEY. I VOLUNTARILY OFFER MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BOOK, THOUGH IT IS NOT EXPECTED OF ME! RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!

I've read most of this series, save for one or two installments, and I like the fact that it gives me a preview of the author's writing. This book was a bit different than what I'd read before, which was a mark in it's favor, but I had a hard time connecting with the characters, which ultimately distracted from the story.

I liked seeing Blake and Gavin's relationship evolve. However, Blake did some really whacked out stuff to get the relationship jump started. I felt that it was taking the cliché of crazy roommate a bit too far. I loved how supportive she was though, when Gavin had his doubts or his parents came to visit.

All things considered, this was a good story, but lacked something to make it a great one.

I absolutely freaking loved this book! Holy shit! This is my favorite book of the Misadventures series and it's a must read.
Welcome to the world of Blake and Gavin. Blake's first day on the job at the coffee shop didn't go well after a nasty woman complained about her inability to understand her coffee lingo and since Gavin had experience, her boss had her shadow Gavin to learn the basics. Blake didn't have any problem finding out all there is to know about Gavin including his dating status and made it pretty clear she was attracted to him. Blake has no filter which only added to her appeal for me. Blake can be a little tough to take at times unless you know her and when her roommate moves out, she doesn't seem too upset.
Gavin has just found himself evicted from his apartment, his roommate was spending his rent money on drugs. When he mentions it at work, Blake has the perfect solution and a couple days later Gavin moves in. These two are the best match ever, the chemistry between them was written to perfection and I don't mean just sexual, I mean as two people who are strangers getting to know each other and living together. It was amazing to watch their relationship unfold. They share bits about their lives, Blake has lived a horrendous life and she gives him tiny glimpses and wonders why she feels comfortable sharing things with him. Things she wouldn't tell anyone else. She makes it clear to him form the start that sex is on the table, but anything beyond that is out. He's okay with that then.
I'm not going to say anything else. You have to read the book. Again, for me the best of the series and to the author(s) a freaking standing ovation!!
